The Banwell SimTech Dynasty: Complete (3-Dec)
« on: September 18, 2023, 12:50:29 PM »
The Banwell SimTech Dynasty

These settlers are known as Chad and Hill. Their family name will be Banwell, after the place where they settle, but they don’t really know that yet so we’ll stick with Chad and Hill.

Screenshot 2023-09-18 104805.jpg

Chad and Hill have travelled far from the Sub-Saharan area from where their ancestors came but they still have ancient dreams of the desert. They travelled looking for a place with food and shelter from the weather. A place to be safe from other people who regarded the travellers with suspicion. The journey was not without perils, some of which left their scars. Finding a cave near a source of fish and fruit and no nearby inhabitants, they decided to settle. This is their story.

Banwell Through The Ages: Background To Choices

Appearance

Meet Cheddar Man, the oldest almost-complete skeleton of Homo Sapiens ever found in Britain dating to around 10,000 years ago – the Mesolithic era. He was found in Gough’s Cave, part of the Cheddar Gorge system of caves, somewhere I have visited.

Cheddar Man.jpg
The model of Cheddar Man rendered by Kennis & Kennis Reconstructions features in the Channel 4 television documentary The First Brit: Secrets of the 10,000 Year Old Man © Tom Barnes/Channel 4

DNA extracted from the skeleton suggests dark skin and blue eyes and more akin to sub-Saharan areas than previously expected. It seems the lighter (water-proof?) North European skin took longer to manifest in response to the lower light levels. The hair suggested is dark and wavy.

Information taken from the National Museum Website

I have tried to replicate Cheddar Man’s high cheek bones and narrow chin. Hill was actually a female twin of Chad but then I removed that relationship.

Names

As Cheddar Man was found in Somerset, UK, I searched for the names of early settlements in that area. Banwell Camp provides a suitable family name that will last through the eras of this challenge.

Ancient English names that have survived to modern times include Chad and Hilda.

Screenshot 2023-09-18 104805.jpg

Chad is similar to Cheddar and can be traced to the Old English name Ceadda and means "protector" or "defender." It can be traced back to the 7th century St Chad of Mercia. Less popular in England in recent generations, it is now seen as the epitome of a surfer name.

Hilda was my beloved grandmother’s name. She appears as a 2 year old on the 1901 census but it took me ages to find because she had been shortened to Hill, an appropriate geographical name for a cave-dweller. It was a popular name earlier than the 7th century. Germanic in origin, it literally means “battle woman”. I do wonder if my oh-so-gentle grandmother knew that!

Seasons

The seasons are set, by the rules, to be 4 weeks long. Being in a temperate weather region with just a cave or tent made it sensible to choose Summer as our starting season. The 2 published SimTech challenge stories by oshizu and sdhoey, both got into the Low-Tech era by day 12. If I can match that, the Banwell family should have nearly 2 weeks remaining of Summer to make the most of their trips to Granite Falls.

I’ve allowed Thunderstorms and Blizzards because they’re fun! Or I’m a glutton for punishment.

I am following the ruleset outlined on this forum - SimTech Dynasty Challenge

Blizzards and Thunderstorms are set on.

It was created before Infants and High School so things may need to be adjusted as I go along but I'm aiming to stay within the spirit of each era. I will post any adaptations I make here.

The Banwell SimTech Dynasty Week 1: Kissing In The Rain

The Banwell SimTech Dynasty Week 1: Kissing In The Rain
Era: No Tech

Family L-to-R: Chad & Hill
Screenshot 2023-09-18 104805.jpg

Chad and Hill don’t talk much but they manage to communicate very well. With Chad’s romantic nature, Hill’s Allure (from her Soulmate Aspiration) and the location exuding romance, our 2 Founders generally had the same thing on their minds.

1.0.jpg1.3.jpg1.8.jpg

Of course, the two love birds had to eat. Chad took on the hunter-gatherer role with relish, except relish wasn’t a thing back then. He loved the outdoor life and made use of the local pond formed by the river. There were 3 great spots from which he could fish. There were frogs to be caught in an old log plus a handy bush for the necessaries. The frogs made Hill smile and, when Chad put them together, they made more frogs.

1.10.jpg

One day while watching the frogs, Hill realised that she and Chad were like the frogs and were making a baby. Chad was very happy about that.

1.5.jpg

Hill was so happy that she started singing. The local foxes had mixed feelings about her efforts but this albino one liked it.

1.28.jpg

Jogging down to the lake each day in the Summer heat made Chad a bit ripe, like the blackberries and cherries he found. But, as he trudged wearily back to his beautiful Hill, he always kept smiling, thinking about how pleased she’d be with the fish he’d caught.

1.13.jpg

While Chad would clean off the worst of his aroma, Hill took care of the cooking because she loved her food. She found that fresh fish was really tasty but day-old fish was always disappointing. It filled them up but it didn’t make them happy.

1.11.jpg

The blackberries and cherries did make them happy as long as they didn’t eat too many of them. Hill found that out the hard way.

1.23.jpg

When a heatwave made their personal odours almost unbearable, they spent time together in the pool, sometimes with and sometimes without their clothes. Nowadays we would describe their times together as “dates” but Chad and Hill only knew the passing of time as sun and moon travelling through the sky. Plus dates don’t grow in Northern Europe.

1.15.jpg

As the child inside her grew, Hill liked to float in their pool while Chad splashed about. He was getting fitter every day.

1.24.jpg

One day (Thursday), while Chad was out hunter-gathering…

1.25.jpg

…Hill went down into the safety of their cave and let her body do what it wanted to do because she didn’t have much choice.

1.26.jpg

Hill named their firstborn Cherry, after the fruit she loved.

1.27.jpg

As the sun set that day, Cherry grew out of her baby basket. Hill kept her close as she carried on with cooking, talking to her all the time. A magical disc appeared every time Cherry was on the ground and disappeared when they picked her up. A bit like the sun and moon appearing and disappearing. It was a time of wonders.

1.30.jpg

When the rain came, both Chad and Hill got perfectly clean and shared a kiss in the rain before going down to sleep in the cave. Cherry had her own special place to sleep. She preferred to be held all the time and especially when she slept but sometimes her parents needed her to sleep in her special place.

1.29.jpg

Life was blissful for the little family but it was growing. As was the body and facial hair of our Founders.

Notes

With no waste bin, Chad puts all dirty plates in his personal inventory and then puts them in the public waste bin near his fishing spots. He was going to do that with the “diaper trash” produced by Cherry but it turns out that he can use it as fishing bait! Yay for reducing landfill!

I’ve tried to keep unauthentic things out of the pictures but the inside of the pool is hard to hide. I also took 3 attempts to get the challenge going and some photos from the earlier tries might have slipped in.

I’d have liked a boy for later reasons but Cherry is delightful. Her nappy has leaves on it – what else!

Great start!
Oooh, the Villareal Estate!  I was scouring the screenshots for clues, haha!
Thank the Fates for rain!

As for the pool, can't you enter Build mode and cover the pool's "floor and walls" with appropriately earthy material?
I'm thinking of the "CleanRoom" wall covering and "Bottom of the Basement" flooring, for example, but wouldn't any darkish covering do?
(If it's a pond and not a pool, you can use terrain paint.)

Hey, you might finish this dynasty before you leave for your trip! :)

The rain was very welcome. The firepit is outdoors so they do get Uncomfortably Wet but they're happy to be clean. Cherry is just happy to be held which isn't always convenient. I've tried the backpack, deciding it's equivalent to a sling, but her parents only keep it on when moving and seem take her out as soon as they do anything.

I didn't think of covering the pools inner walls! Silly me. Thanks  :)

Welcome to the No Tech Era

No-Tech Clothing

Wardrobe Male Low.jpgWardrobe Female Low.jpg
Only one outfit is allowed. It is funny to see the Banwells spinning around to change their outfit and end up looking the same. I could only find cave-dweller cc outfits in non-European animal skins so Hill and Chad are styled in regular Sim outfits, albeit with the masculine/feminine restrictions off. With black skirts and Hill’s terracotta top, they look sufficiently pre-historic.

Cherry
female child wardrobe.jpg
The towel for a female child is not ideal. In reality she would have worn just a skirt but the game adds a white vest.

Thunder
Toddler wardrobe.jpg
Cherry
Screenshot 2023-09-18 172425.jpg
The toddler nappy is terracotta and the infant one has leaves on.

All these items are from the regular game with the (many!) packs I have. I thought about CC clothing but decided it wasn't necessary.

Chad’s unkempt hairstyle is actually classed as feminine.

Location

Genetic testing has revealed my personal ethnicity as a whopping 60% from England and Northwestern Europe and I wanted my SimTech Dynasty challenge to reflect that.
Henford-on-Bagley, the archetypical English village, isn’t available until the Mid-Tech era so Windenburg was chosen.

Windenburg.jpg

There has been some suggestion that Sims could wade in the river running through the Windslar region (with all the windmills). This was not the case and the waterfall in Sulani is much missed by our stinky settlers. The Crumbling Isle would have been a more authentic European wilderness choice but there isn’t too much anachronistic neighbourhood structure in Windslar and I’ve not seen any pop-up food vans or rinks so far. Summer fruits available in the neighbourhood are Cherries and Blackberries.

There is one main pool in Windslar with 3 fishing points – perfect for the Angling Ace Aspiration (Low-Tech Era) and I tried various lots before settling on the Villareal Estate as being the closest. Even so, adding a pond with fish to the lot was essential as each portion of roasted fish takes a whole fish. It shouldn’t be a problem maxing Chad’s Fishing skill.

All other lots in the Windslar neighbourhood have been razed to the ground. The other Windenburg neighbourhoods have been left intact for now as my Sims can’t visit them yet.

No-Tech Dwelling

The rules say to start in a 40*30 lot or larger and, once the dwelling is built, to reduce funds to 0. As this forms the foundation on which to build their assets, I took the decision to spend the full amount of the starting funds. Thus, when it’s time to relocate for the Low-Tech Era, Chad and Hill will have the maximum possible.

I like using tents but using the alternative of a basement “cave” allows the placement of a WC. It’s off-grid so gathering water is a regular task but it makes life so much easier than the increasingly smelly bushes. The basement is also helpful as shelter from thunderstorms. One problem I have been having is being unable to do Tummy Time with an Infant in the basement. Apparently the game thinks they’re underwater!

Screenshot 2023-09-18 170533.jpg

I basically put lots of trees around the access so the access disappears in most shots. There’s a swimming pool, for hygiene and fitness, surrounded by shrubs and the crucial but dangerous firepit.

Screenshot 2023-09-18 171102.jpg

A pond, or should I say lake, takes up most of one side of the lot, providing a barrier to visitors, a source of water, fish and frogs plus a very slow means of hygiene if the Sims play in it.

Screenshot 2023-09-18 171124.jpg

Lot Traits: Bracing Breezes, Romantic Aura, Childs Play
Lot Challenges: Off-Grid, Wild Foxes

Note: This was included in an earlier post but I'm still moving things around to keep things simple

The Banwell SimTech Dynasty Week 2: Infantasies

Previously at Banwell Camp: Our Founders Chad and Hill settled on the Villareal estate and started making babies. Chad started hunter-gathering and Hill started Singing. Infant Cherry arrived and another baby was on the way. The adults got very hairy and everyone got very smelly.

Life was hard in the Banwell Cave. Hill aged Infant Cherry up into an Angelic Toddler and then went straight to bed. As with the previous pregnancy, she was uncomfortable and nauseous most of the time. Cherry watched her Da modify her Infant bed so that she could sleep in it.

It was very difficult to get anyone anything less than stinky. Playing in the little pool helped but not much. It was fun though, especially with the strange bird that was always there.

Early Tuesday morning, Cherry’s baby brother was born. She couldn’t decide if she was most upset about that or scared of the storm he brought with him. He was named Thunder which some might say was auspicious of something but we’ll not worry about that.

Despite not being pleased to have Thunder arrive, Cherry entertained him with her dancing and singing. Did he like it? No-one knows. But he didn’t cry while she did it.

When Thunder aged up to a Wiggly Infant, Cherry decided enough was enough and took matters into her own hands. Resenting the attention lavished unnecessarily (in her opinion) on her noisy brother and becoming uncomfortably smelly, she took off the little wrap that she wore and went wandering. Her parents, I’m sorry to say, did not notice and so Cherry’s manners were not corrected.

This fox, Two-Paw, does not like Hill singing to it. Which is a shame because she is getting better. She wasn’t concentrating on her Singing much until she realised that her growing Cooking skill is currently irrelevant despite the fact that it was feeding the family! Chad has maxed his Fishing which was a great cause for celebration and more singing.

Cherry wanted more of her Ma’s attention but Thunder was awake. Whilst he didn’t like being held, he did want company. Hill told Cherry to follow her to the firepit and she would chat with her while she was cooking.

Fortunately Cherry took a while getting up the steps because her Ma got burned while lighting the fire. Thunder, in the backpack didn’t get burned. Cherry thinks she’s glad about that.

I’m sorry to say that someone called the Repo Man appeared on Thursday. It was thought that they might not so Chad had ignored the strange white stuff in the post on the corner of their camp. As it happens, frog breeding and digging have provided a small nest egg to buy a new (long drop) toilet and a firepit. How could he take the firepit? He rubbed his hands as he did it! Sadly Chad had been in an exhausted sleep and did not rouse to fight the Repo Man.

Chad was cross that he hadn’t lived up to his name’s meaning “protector” for his little family so he jogged it off with Thunder on his back. Thunder seemed to love the jogging and Chad maxed his Fitness. We are all very happy again. Chad does tell jokes when he’s happy but he gets dangerously Playful and so he doesn’t do it too often.

With no way of choosing when to age-up anyone other than Nooboos and Infants, Cherry aged up to a Creative Child just after Thunder aged-up to a Toddler. Upstaged by her brother one more time, Cherry was sad that no-one seemed to notice. But her Ma gave her a frog and apologized smoothly and that seemed to make everything OK.

2.13.jpg

Cherry relished her new responsibilities. She gathered water, dug for fossils and she could even roast fish she started catching if someone else lit the fire for her.

Letting Cherry take on some of their responsibilities, Chad and Hill found time for some extra-curricular activities…

Notes

I was hopeful to get into the Low Tech Era in this Sim week, following the success of others, but I hadn’t factored in the demanding Infant stage. They achieved a lot of Social Milestones but their parents just don’t have the time or energy to do much Tummy Time. Toys and the playmat aren’t available so Fine Motor Skills aren’t developing either. Having back-to-back babies to delay Hill’s aging just isn’t practical!

Cooking is not a relevant skill for the No Tech Era. It’s possible that feasting on fruit wasn’t a problem previously but now, if they eat too much, they get stomach ache. Roasting fish builds Cooking skill and I’ll have to start Chad cooking instead of Hill to avoid her maxing it before they go into the next era.

Thunder looked very like Cherry did as an Infant and his default Toddler hairstyle was just right.

Cherry’s default hairstyles have needed changing each time. She looked lovely as a toddler with a headscarf and had a pinned back ‘fro as a child. Still, she can still work her unkempt styles.
