Not Just a Garden Variety Challenge

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Your Sim will be getting their hands dirty in this challenge as they will not only pursue high levels in the gardening career but must spend every moment they're not at work perfecting their garden with many different types of the finest plants. It all comes down to the last 24 hours for your gardener -- a market day selling frenzy.

Challenge Rules
  • Remember, the General Rules apply to all Tournament challenges. Exceptions may be noted below.
  • In CAS (no Story Mode), create one Young Adult Sim (any life state).
  • No moving is allowed after entering Live mode.
  • Your Sim must enter the gardening career on Day 1 and never quit.
  • Pets are allowed, but no other additions can be made to the household.
  • Scarecrows, starting season/season length, are all up to the player.
  • Grafting is banned.
  • The challenge ends on Week 3, Day 1, 8 am.

Scoring

Market Day is the final 24 hours of your challenge file (Week 2, Day 7, 8 am - Week 3, Day 1, 8 am). Completely clean out your inventory, then write down your household funds before selling your produce. How you sell your garden produce is up to you, but you may only sell the produce from unique plants. No duplicate plants. You may only sell what you harvest during market day. No stockpiling of produce.

Career Level. This multiplier is based on the highest level attained in the gardening career. Remember, your Sim can never quit the career. Everyone starts with a multiplier of 1.00. Add 5% to the multiplier per career level.

Here's an example:

You pause your game at Week 2, Day 7, 8 am. You clean out your inventory. At that point, you note your household funds are 100000 simoleans. You harvest and sell all produce from 35 unique plants. You pause your game at Week 3, Day 1, 8 am. Your household funds now sit at 117000. Your Market Day Total is 117000 - 100000 = 17000.

You also achieved level 7 in the Botanist track of the gardening career.

17000 X 1.35 = 22950

A Few Additional Specifics:
The team does not want to edit and change the ruleset once this event goes live, but we may have to. If an exploit is brought to our attention or we discover something else, we may ask affected players to redo their effort.

If you have questions and need clarifications, ask away — you can either post your questions in this thread or if you feel a question might reveal a particular strategy you are considering, then feel free to PM the team. Choose the My Messages tab > Send Message > Send to Group (show member groups) > Check the Challenge Board Moderator group.

The winner will be announced the Monday following the closing date below. Once the event has closed, everyone is encouraged to discuss how they approached the event, and the winner is expected to do so in detail.

Just checking that although we can change season length we cannot change holidays.

No duplicate plants on market day - does this mean we count the produce from one apple tree, one clump of mushrooms etc.? Can we sell duplicate produce for household funds on this day outside of the "market".

Correct.

No. You may only sell produce from unique plants on Market Day, so sell produce from duplicate plants before Market Day begins.

I am checking on your holiday question.

------------

Edit: We'll stick with the General Rules on holidays -- i.e., no changing them.

thanks for the swift response.

Was just wondering - are oversized crops considered plants for market day?

Yes, those are unique and are fine for market day. So, for example, you can sell produce from one mushroom plant as well as an oversized mushroom plant.

Please look over the rules one final time and ask any questions before this goes live on Monday.

Are grafted plants considered unique to the plants they are combos of?

You're creating a brand new plant with grafting. You're taking a cutting of plant A and grafting it onto plant B to create plant C. So, can you think of why plant C would not be considered unique? I can't. I asked the team for feedback.

EDIT: Okay, I just got done with a team pow-wow. Grafting will be banned.

Sorry for causing problems by raising this. I actually meant it a little differently: A, B, B with C produce as a result of grafting with A, and ungrafted C. So a fourth plant for uniqueness. Should have worded my question more clearly even if it didn't impact the decision.

You're not causing problems, so no worries. Better we iron all of this out before the event goes live tomorrow. But, as I said above the team had a brief meeting yesterday and we decided it would be simpler to just ban grafting altogether. Good luck in the event, and thank you for bringing this to our attention.

I had some glitches where the plants reverted to dirt piles and I didn't realize they would stay that way so please put me down as DNF.

Sounds like a nasty bug. You have permission to go back to an earlier save in that case if you want to.
