A Twitch of a Tale (Nine Lives Dynasty) 9.6: The Journey HomeSky: After I make a stand at the Prom, wearing as many colours as I could, things become tense at home on the island. Janet, the Posh Princess is nervous that the authorities will look deeper into our natures. I say, let them! We’re just trying to live in peace.
Nova: The Posh Princess spends more and more time with her new friends. They tell her about sleeping out in the deep ocean, that there’s a whole community out there. One day she goes out to see for herself – and doesn’t come home. We believe she found her community. We don’t think she was abducted…
Sky: Too right, I’m going through a rebellious phase. There’s just me and the Lazy Tom with Nova now and we feel like we’re living on borrowed time…
Sky: I decide to graduate early. I’ve got my grades and the head has been giving me a hard time about my “showing-off” at the Prom. “Showing off”? Does she not know what is going on?
Sky: Clearing out my locker, I overhear some of my ex-classmates whispering about how much they hate aliens. That the aliens have taken all the good jobs and they’re lazy scroungers. Both those statements can’t be true! I think they’re talking about me too. I’m glad I’m out of here.
Sky: Dear Diary – I’m worried about the Lazy Tom. I know he’s Lazy but he spends all day on the couch.
Nova: I don’t mind – I get lots of pampering from him.
Sky: Yes but he keeps giving you the pizza he orders which is really not good for you.
Nova: I don’t like the delivery girl either.
Sky: I’m off to bed. Maybe I’ll think of something in the morning.
Nova: Sky sleeps through the knock at the door. 2 people in grey come in and talk to the Lazy Tom. They seem nice at first and he relaxes.
Nova: When the Lazy Tom admits he’s got Spellcaster blood, the Grey Female screams. The Grey Male tells her not to be paranoid as he doesn’t think there’s a threat but they take the Lazy Tom off for questioning. They take all his things too…
Sky: I heard sirens, Nova. What’s going on?
Nova: Some people took the Lazy Tom away. They’re coming back tomorrow to pick up the rest of his things.
Sky: What about me?
Nova: He didn’t mention you, Sky Not Blue. Maybe they don’t know you’re here.
Sky: Dear Diary – I don’t know if people are coming back to get me or if I can hide. Granny Goo thinks I should take Nova and head for Mum & Dad’s place in Henford-on-Bagley. Nova thinks it’s a good idea too. Mind you, Nova thinks anyone who pampers her has good ideas!
Nova: Sky Not Blue gets us ready to travel. We’ve got a tent, a cool box, a litter tray, food dish and my sleep mat. It all fits in Sky Not Blue’s inventory.
Nova: We can’t use the main transport because that will all be monitored. We’ll travel from world to world. It’ll take a few days but hopefully not more than that. Not to put too fine a point on it, we’re both getting a bit paranoid about everything. But then again, maybe we’re right…
Sky: We reach Glimmerbrook in time for Alien Night. I didn’t think any would come but Purple Bobby’s dad Theo is there. There’s also an evil alien called Rhett and 2 nice ones called Leon Redeemer (!) and Elena. They’re tense but they say they’re working on a solution. I assume it’s all political but Leon says something about a “reset”. They don’t really explain.
Nova: We get to Britechester and hang out in Foxbury Commons. Sky Not Blue gets a couple of decent meals inside her and even relaxes enough to play (lose) at table tennis. You can’t see my food dish and litter tray? Sky Not Blue always puts them somewhere discreet and shows me where before I go off for a prowl. She only puts her tent up after dark and takes it down as soon as she wakes up. It’s a nomadic life but we’re settling in to it. Almost enjoying it.
Nova: Evergreen Harbour and there are no food vans or barbeques. Sky Not Blue finds some Salvadorean food in a dumpster but it’s very spicy and she’s left feeling uncomfortable instead of hungry. She gets really tired during daylight. Putting up the tent is too obvious so I watch over her while she has a nap. This woman suddenly starts laying in to me for no reason. I’m just sitting here, lady!
Sky: Hey! You can’t speak to my cat like that.
Lady: How do you know how I spoke to it. You were asleep.
Sky: She’s a “she” not an “it”. Nova tells me everything. We’re soulmates.
Lady: You talk to your cat? And you think your cat talks to you? You’re crazy!
Lady: If your cat talks to you, how come you don’t know it’s got red glowing feet?
Sky: Oh, Nova. I’ve got nothing to make you well. We’re going to have to take you to the vet and I don’t know how we’ll get there.
Lady: Listen, kid. There’s charity transport for people with sick pets. Some bleeding-heart animal-lovers set it up. You just have to click the button on your phone – no questions asked. You do have a phone, don’t you?
Sky: Yes. Oh, thank you. Nova says “thank you” too.
Nova: No I don’t
Sky: Sh Nova – be nice to the helpful lady.
Lady: Whatever!
Nova: Sky gets me to the elderly vet and she reckons I’ve got Sizzlepaw – again! Oh I miss the days when I had my own personal vet. Ah well, at least my paws feel better.
Sky: Hey, Nova. It’s time for the Finchwick Fair!
Nova: Great! We can hop on the transport they lay on for that and just mingle with the crowd.
Sky: Won’t they be checking everyone in and out?
Nova: We’ll be fine. Trust me!
Sky: Mum!
Antonia: Oh Sky! It’s so good to see you. Have Carson & Janet come too?
Sky: Who? Oh you mean Posh and the Lazy Tom. No, Posh went off to be a mermaid in deep waters and the Lazy Tom just….went off. Granny Goo and Nova both thought we should come here, to live with you.
Antonia: O….kay?
Sky: How is everyone here? Is it safe?
Antonia: We’re fine. Eddie acts out every now and then – like this mess he’s made. But we always get him to clean it up.
Sky: Eddie? Oh – Green in Black! Hi kiddo!
Eddie: Um….
Nova: And so we settle into a new household on an old lot. It’s a totally recreated facsimile of a country cottage complete with vegetable beds, chickens (!) a llama and a cow. Ah well. There’s so much going on that we’re bound to be safe.
Shop-owner: Hello young lady. I’ve not met you before.
Sky: My name’s Sky Not Blue and I’ve come to get my family groceries.
Shop-owner: That’s an unusual name. Who are your family?
Sky: Jedidiah Ramesh is my dad and Antonia is my mum.
Shop-owner: Ah – the Not Blue makes sense now. I’m glad to meet you. Tell your mum that it’s best to send you or your dad to get the groceries. You’re alright out there but the village centre has more strangers in than we like…
Watcher: Go for a Jog to relax
Sky: I can’t believe we’re not safe here either. Purple Bobby and Green In Black are both teens now but they’ve dropped out of school because…
Watcher: Just keep jogging
Sky: Is anywhere safe now? I mean, I don’t know if we’ve got any other options.
Watcher: Mind that log.
Sky: Nova says everything will be OK. I don’t know what I’d do without her.
Watcher: Just round this bend….
Sky: Oh Watcher. I’m not sure this jogging is helping.
Nova: Oh – it’s you.
Grim: Well Nova. This is it.
Nova: The last time?
Grim: The last time. Are you ready?
Nova: What about Sky Not Blue? I’m quite worried about her.
Grim: Everyone has a path they must travel. Hers is no longer with you.

NotesNova was right to be worried about Sky Not Blue. As the final soulmate to Nova, losing her to the Man in Black sent Sky Not Blue over the edge. She believes it is imperative to place Nova's final urn with the others back in Sulani and so she has set off, hiding from authorities, on the long journey home.
You might think I’m sending her on a Runaway Teen challenge but how could she even contemplate that without Nova? Besides, it isn’t long until her Young Adult birthday.
