A Twitch of a Tale (Nine Lives Dynasty) 9.4: Dear DiaryNova: Something very strange happens this week. It was Winter last week and each season only lasts one week but it’s Winter again. Watcher only realises when we get the notification that it’s Christmas the next day. I, of course, realised straight away. The holidays are all messed up as well. We nearly have Easter the day after Christmas as well as New Year’s Eve. We cancelled Easter but the diary ahead looks confusing. I put it down to the difficulties going on in the wider world.
Janet, the Posh Princess, helps Purple Bobby blow his candles out. It’s nice that Purple Theodore came for Purple Bobby’s birthday. He’s been a bit scarce lately.
Nova: Purple Bobby chooses to wear a skaters T-shirt and a cat hat. A fine choice, I must say, for a young Cat-Lover. We might change the boots for something more suited to the islands.
Nova: Sharon, the New Green Princess ages up her Sunny infant Eddie who comes wearing mainly black. She has to call a nanny to help her care for him.Despite his sunny nature, he gets in a terrible state and won’t let the New Green Princess feed him. The nanny sorts him out and leaves detailed instructions. The New Green Princess hopes it will be alright. So do I. I do not like all the fussing and crying, not to mention all the noise that Green In Black makes.
Nova: After all the fuss, most of the family are in bed when the Man in Black comes for Llantonio. The llama looks happy about it. Carson, the Lazy Tom, go out to see what was going on and finds nothing, not even a gravestone. That’s how little Llantonio’s existence matters in the grand scheme of things. The Lazy Tom is very sad about it but the rest of my acolytes are totally over it.
Nova: Sky Not Blue tries to entertain Green In Black. He coos at her and smiles. It’s not a riveting conversation. You can see the Posh Princess has switched off and daydreaming.
Sky: Gee Baa! Shuffle Shuffle!
Nova: See what I mean?
Sky: See Waa I Mee!
Nova: I get quite worried when the Man in Black shows up again. He left with the llama so why is he back? He wants what? To be Best Friends with Antonia? And she’s too polite to say “no”. All my acolytes always accept all friend requests.
Nova: Look at that! Green in Black is cooing at the Man in Black. Kindred spirits? I hope not.
Nova: Well, it’s about time. My poor Antonia was trying to be cool about the whole relationship thing. She made the first move to start dating and Jedidiah seemed happy about Sky Not Blue but he’s been a bit distant lately. They say people like Jedidiah who live in the HoB have started keeping themselves to themselves but Antonia’s is so pleased to be engaged.
Nova: Green In Black ages into a Charming Toddler, keeping his black wardrobe. The Man in Black is still around and joins in the celebrations. It’s disturbing really, even though I’m not even an Elder yet.
Sky: Dear Diary, Nova says I should start writing stuff down as things get confusing around here. I couldn’t write until I became a child. Do you like my sleepwear? Watcher took my slippers away because she’s got a thing against wearing slippers in bed.
Watcher: It’s wrong – just wrong!
Sky: Anyway, she let me keep my headscarf which is good because it feels comfy.
Sky: So, one of the strange things that happens is that Green In Black gets a birthday hug from the Man in Black. Green In Black is really called Eddie and I’m not sure who the Man in Black is but that’s what Nova calls them and it makes sense to me. The others say they can’t understand Nova but I think they just don’t listen properly.
Nova: Meow!
Sky: They don’t hear Watcher either…
Watcher: That’s OK. They don’t really need to now.
Sky: Here’s me playing chess with Purple Bobby (PB). He lives here too. He’s some sort of cousin, but quite distant. No, I mean he’s friendly but he’s a distant cousin. Carson, I can’t call him the Lazy Tom like Nova does – he’s not Lazy at all, is mentoring PB. Carson is PB’s uncle so I guess he’s my distant cousin too. Hey! Writing things out does help make a bit more sense. Thanks, Nova.
Nova: You’re welcome.
Sky: This is the Posh Princess. She’s PB’s mother and sister to Carson so another distant cousin to me. I don’t call her the Posh Princess to her face. Her real name is Janet but she is Posh. She’s a Child of the Ocean and loves to swim but won’t eat fish. So we don’t eat fish. Ever.
Nova: Shame!
Sky: You’ve got nothing to complain about, Nova. You live the life of Riley!
Nova: Prrrrrr!
Sky: The Island Spirits are amazing! We take it in turns to spend time with them and it always leaves me feeling …..warm and happy. The islands are beautiful with lots of ocean growth and butterflies. It’s because of some work that our ancestors did way back. The Spirits are very happy about that.
Nova: Hey Sky Not Blue! Watch what you’re doing! You’re supposed to pour it in my bowl.
Sky (laughing): Sorry, Nova. I got distracted. I put out Nova’s food every morning before I have my breakfast. I’d feel awful if I ever forgot. Yes, Diary, Nova calls me Sky Not Blue because my mother is blue and so everyone was expecting me to be blue. But I’m not.
Sky: Actually, me not being blue means I go to a different school to PB. Only human-typical kids go to my school and I’m not allowed to go to PBs. I don’t know why. It makes my mother sad. There she is, painting in the background. She’s got such lovely skin that I call her Blue Mum, when I’m at home. Not when I’m at school. It’s complicated. Anyway - you can see my baseball cap here. I do like a fine hat!
Sky: So that’s my Blue Mum and here’s my Green Mum, Sharon, playing with Green In Black. Isn’t he cute! Watcher says she doesn’t usually keep that hairstyle.
Watcher: It’s a bit pudding-bowl, but it suits Eddie.
Sky: Which school will Green In Black go to?
Watcher: The same as Bobby.
Sky: I don’t see why we can’t all be together.
Watcher: It’s complicated.
Sky: Green Mum isn’t really my Mum. She’s another distant cousin but not as distant as everyone else. Oh dear, that doesn’t make sense. Anyway, she is Lactose-Intolerant so we don’t have any dairy food – ever! Oh, except when there’s cake, and then it has to be cleared up straight-away so that Green Mum doesn’t sneak a piece. She always regrets it.
Sky: OK, don’t freak out but this is my Granny! I call her Granny Goo – something I said when I was little and it stuck – like Goo! Ha ha! She doesn’t visit every night but when she does, boy do we have fun
Nova: Like when she whooshes through you?
Sky: Yes! That really tickles.
Sky: She makes me do my homework too so it’s not all fun. She helps me though.
Watcher: Doing well at school will give you options.
Sky: What sort of options?
Nova: Don’t ask me, Sky Not Blue. I’m a cat. I never do homework.
Sky: After finishing my homework I find Purple Theodore asleep on the couch even though the club finished hours ago. He says it’s hard to get transport these days for people like him. That’s just wrong.
Nova: So wrong.
Nova: Do you know the best way to keep a secret?
Sky: Don’t tell anyone? But this next bit is amazing! I have to write it down. The Posh Princess, with Nova’s help…
Nova: Leave me out of it.
Sky: …she got some kelp, swallowed it down and…
Sky:…off she ran, into the water and turned into a mermaid. Oh – she looks amazing! I don’t know why she’s wearing glasses in the water.
Nova: Maybe it’s a Posh thing
Sky: Anyway, wow! Just, WoW
Nova: But it’s a secret!
Sky: Yeah! Don’t tell anyone else!
Sky: It’s nearly time for scouts so I’ll just write down who me and PB meet at the park. There’s Goofball Kathryn, Lactose-Intolerant Wendell and Dog-Loving Hanna. They’re friendly with both of us. They want to touch PBs skin and he doesn’t mind. Hanna and he have a good debate about whether cats are better, or dogs.
Nova: What is there to discuss?
Sky: Right! Anyway, we meet Landyne as well. He’s an Erratic, Art-Loving Child of the Ocean. He says we’re in Groundhog Day and it’ll be Winter again next week. He also says there are lots of people like him hanging around the park but when he tries to introduce them to us, we can’t see them.
Nova: Just as well it’s time for scouts, then!
Sky: OK. I’ll write more next year. Or this year. Or whenever!

NotesI have no idea why we had an extra week of Winter. The family have all aged as normal and I haven’t touched my settings. It’s not surprising Sky feels it necessary to write stuff down.
Antonia got the splash to say she'd completed the Simmies collection but she hasn't got all the gold ones. She's got all 12 of the regular ones and 6 of the gold.
Next update will hopefully be Antonia’s wedding to Jedidiah, if the calendar behaves itself.
