Rules: The Mother Earth Legacy Challenge - Needing Help
« on: August 16, 2022, 10:27:55 AM »
Hey all,

Getting back into the game after a long hiatus and wanting to do a special legacy style challenge for my YouTube channel as well, but needing some help putting some bits together.  The basic gist is a combination of rags to riches and legacy, but with a bit of a story and more structure akin to something like the Not So Berry challenge.  Basically, first generation washes up on the shores of Sulani with nothing and has to build a home there, and each generation after is being influenced by the environmental awareness that comes from expansions and packs like Island Living, Eco Lifestyle, and so on. Every character after the first must in some way focus on improving the world and studying/improving nature.  So, here's what I have as a basis for this, and as I flesh it out more, I'll add in necessary traits, etc., but I do want to avoid having multiple generations with the same career but different track (so no pair of Conservationists, no pair of Civil Designers) just to pad it out.

Generation 1 - Only allowed to be a part timer in one of the three Island Living tracks (I'm leaning toward fisherman).
Generation 2 - Child of the Island trait (maybe also Child of the Sea), Conservationist
Generation 3 - Gardener (Botanist specifically)
Generation 4 - Civil Designer
Generation 10 - Politics (Charity Organizer) - Speak for the Trees cause

And yeah, that's about it.  Maybe do some kind of Self-Employed/Freelancer type stuff with Outdoor Retreat and Jungle Adventure, such as someone who writes non-fiction books cataloging all the plants and bugs.  Or a scientist in there somewhere? Maybe a freelance crafter who does all the fabrication, candlemaking, etc., stuff from eco lifestyle.

Basically, I'm trying to think up a way to stretch this out across 10 generations without repeats in professions.  I do have some additional rules in mind, though.

1. Cannot travel to other worlds except via the "take a vacation" route to go to places like Granite Falls and Selvadorada.  Exception for when taking over a new generation and moving to another world.
2. Must live in the world best established for your character's profession.  Sulani for conservationist, San Myshuno for political political, Evergreen Harbor for civil designer, etc.).
3. Cannot buy kelp or other means of becoming or curing other status, but must acquire occult nature through in-game actions.
4. Must start as human.
5. When taking over the next generation and moving out, may only take at most half of household funds with (and certain generations will take less), and none of a previous generation's career items unless specified.
6. May only develop romantic relationships with locals.  No wooing Mortimer Goth while living in Sulani.  Exceptions for characters unique to Granite Falls/Selvadorada for those generations visiting there only.
7. Mother Nature is a matriarch.  Only female children may be heirs.  However, they do not have to be the current matriarch's biological children.  Adoption is one alternative, as is a male household member having an alien baby.

So yeah, there we go so far.  Any suggestions for another five generations or so worth of careers that can be made to fit the theme of someone who is both environmentally and culturally conscious and wants to improve the world they live in on a bigger scale than simply being a doctor or lawyer?

This looks interesting.
Do you have the Cottage Living pack? There's no career as such but adopting the simple-living, living off home produce and preserving it, bartering with neighbours plus errands is a back-to-basics life-style that benefits the planet. One generation could definitely explore that.

Maybe add in requirements to do aspirations that fit the theme? Country Caretaker, Fishing, Gardening, the Eco ones, the Outdoor Retreat one, etc? Not sure about additional careers, tho.

I think this thread would more appropriately fit under the Creative Stories and Player Created Challenges section.

Curious to see what you come up with; good luck! :)

Much like the not so berry challenge, this one will have set aspirations and traits to fit the theme.  But yeah, wanting to get some looks at more career options.

I don't have it yet, but can pick it up relatively cheap with a bundle of some other missing stuff.  That does sound like an interesting idea.  Maybe also have another become a veterinarian.  If we combine those with adding in scientist, that brings us up to 8 generations. 9 if counting the non-fiction author who writes about Granite Falls.  10 if we somehow justify someone else who focuses on Selvadorada.  Not sure how to do that last one though.  Any ideas?

Hmmmm, what about the law career? You could role play it like they're a public interest firm suing companies for excess pollution, tainting rivers, etc.? Having your scientist do the Selvadora aspiration/Granite Falls aspiration (since there's no aspiration that directly pairs with scientist) makes sense to me - they could be a biologist doing field work. And what about a journalist? Helping the environment by writing articles about global warming, exposing companies' eco violations, etc.?

Just spent the last hour or two in CAS and world mode looking at things, and here's some basics I have in mind.  May want to add in another generation or two for things like Law or Teaching careers, cover all the worlds, or maybe cut out some of the existing ones in here, like the Veterinarian.  Let's see what input you all have on it.  Probably create some more unique generational rules along the way as well.  Waiting a couple weeks before I start the challenge, but do want to develop it between now and then.

Generation 1
World: Sulani
Lot: Key Point
Traits: Active, Loves Outdoors, Family-Oriented
Profession: Fisherman
Aspiration(s): Angling Ace, Super Parent recommended as secondary
Special Rules: Can only buy trees, rocks, shrubs, etc., to start with on your lot, then must use cheats to bring household funds to zero.  May only start with one outfit, must spend simoleons to acquire others, as your character has washed ashore on the beach.  As money comes in, can also buy a new household, find love, and start the lineage.

Generation 2
World: Sulani
Traits: Child of the Islands, Child of the Ocean, Cheerful
Profession: Conservationist
Aspiration(s):

Generation 3
World: Henford-on-Bagley
Traits: Animal Enthusiast, Loner, Unflirty
Profession: Farmer/Rancher (self-employed)
Aspiration(s): Country Caretaker

Generation 4
World: Brindleton Bay
Traits: Cat/Dog Lover (your pick), Hates Children, Hot-Headed
Profession: Veterinarian (self-employed)
Aspiration(s): Friend of the Animals

Generation 5
World: Evergreen Harbor
Lot: The Shipping Views
Traits: Freegan, Maker, Recycle Disciple
Profession: Freelance Crafter
Aspiration(s):  Master Maker
Special Rules: You’ve been kicked out of the house upon being old enough and have virtually no money to your name.  Keep track of any income from part-time jobs, selling, etc., done as a teen, as well as any purchases made by this sim, as this affects how much starting money you have.  Slightly better than rags to riches in generation 1, but not much better.

Generation 6
World: Evergreen Harbor
Traits: Green Fiend, Vegetarian, Foodie
Profession: Civil
Aspiration(s): Eco Innovator

Generation 7
World: Windenburg?
Traits: Gloomy, Lazy, Materialistic
Profession: Gardener (Botanist Track)
Aspiration(s): Freelance Botanist

Generation 8
World: Oasis Springs? Strangerville?
Traits: Geek, Slob, Lactose Intolerant
Profession: Scientist
Aspiration(s): Curator (especially interested in Sixam collections)/Strangerville Mystery if in that world

Generation 9
World:  Willow Creek? Britechester?
Traits: Bookworm, Perfectionist, Noncomittal
Profession: Writer (Journalist track) or Self-Employed (Author)
Aspiration(s): Outdoor Enthusiast/Bestselling Author

Generation 10
World: San Myshuno
Traits: Self-Assured, Outgoing, Snob
Profession: Politics (Charity Organizer path) - Speak for the Trees cause
Aspiration(s): Jungle Explorer/City Native

Thoughts?

I do like the overall ethos of this challenge.
If it is designed for others to join in, personally I'd find pinning down all 3 traits as well as the career,  aspiration and world a bit limiting but that is possibly the point?

The Freegan in gen 5 will get uncomfortable even in the freelance career. I think they're happy to hold yard sales...

Much like with the not so berry challenge, one of the things I want to do with this one is to see aspects of the game that aren't often touched on, either because they're kinda one and done things per save file (like Strangerville, fixing up the island, etc.) or just because we don't highlight them often enough.  You could almost look at it as a "one pack per generation" thing, if not for the fact that we have a pair of dual generations in the same world.  World selection itself was because of trying to find the best world to fit the career and/or aspiration since I wanted a challenge wide "no traveling to other worlds" rule.  For some, like the conservationist and politician at the end, this was easy, as they need a specific world to accomplish tasks for work (testing the water, painting street murals, etc.) or aspiration (winning one of the country living competitions), while others like scientist and the others with a question mark, I just kinda went with aesthetics (scientist work area is in a desert, most likely one of the crater sites in Strangerville, so put down the two deserts).

That said, I'm probably being more specific on the front end for my own run as I basically test it out, see what works, what I want to toss, etc., before I release the full and official rule set.  For example, I may want to discard the freegan and mix them into the civil designer, or pull out the veterinarian to go with a teacher or lawyer type.  I'm not as set on having multiple generations that closely related to stuff.
