CHAPTER ONE: 1890

The Montgomery family begins here, in 1890. Newlyweds Albert and Edith Montgomery have left their small village in search of something more. They look around the town of Windenburg until they find their one-bedroomed house. Weary from travel, they settle into their home, though with little jolts of excitement bristling through them. Edith makes a warm tomato soup as Albert unpacks what little belongings they brought with them.

They sit at the table in silence, too tired to talk. Edith watches the runny soup fall from her spoon as she looks around the bare wooden walls and runs her fingers along the rough wooden table. She shifts in her seat. The cushion is flat, and she can feel the hard wood underneath her cotton skirt. Edith sighs. This is her life now, and she just has to accept it. What was it her mother said as they were leaving?

'He won't be what you're expecting, but then, neither will you be. Just be enough for each other, and hopefully that'll be what you want.'

Edith swallows the meagre soup and forces a smile.

It has been a few months and the Montgomery's have settled into their new lives with little resistance. Edith is getting used to her daily chores of housework. Thankfully her mother prepared her for the amount of work that is needed to maintain a sense of cleanliness. Still, Edith can't help but feel like she is unable to keep up with the mess.

Thankfully, Albert isn't the type of husband that would expect more of what she was able to give.

However, Edith is worried about him. Ever since he was offered a job at the Grisham Brothers Law Firm, he has been working long hours with little pay. Her lonely days turn into lonely nights and Edith finds herself tiring of the same routine every day. Edith grits her teeth and pushes her discontent down. They are both working hard for a better future.

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

It has been a difficult few weeks for the Montgomery family. Albert has been quiet, and Edith is still struggling to adapt to their new life. One night, Albert comes home from work with some particularly unpleasant news. Edith braces herself.

'Edith, I know that I haven't been at home very much, and I'm sorry ... I know this has been hard on you as well.'

'It's been really tough at the firm. A case hasn't gone the way a client was expecting, and, well, they're suing us.'

Edith holds her hands to her face. 'But what does this mean for you?' she asks.
Albert looks tired. 'I don't know. I just ... I don't know. They're a wealthy client with a lot of power. We're just a small law firm. This could mean the end for me.'

The couple finish their meal in silence.

Over the next few days, Edith is determined to make life at home as pleasant as possible for Albert. It is their first Harvestfest in their new life, and Edith wants it to be as enjoyable as she can. She pushes her worry deep down and focuses on making an enjoyable holiday for her darling husband.

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

Edith has been feeling quite unwell lately.

She sits Albert down and shares the news that they are expecting their first child. Albert is shocked at first, but holds Edith closely. He pushes his own fears aside and puts his arms around his wife.

A few months into the pregnancy and it seems that the misfortune headed towards the Montgomery's has managed to be diverted. The impending court case was dismissed due to lack of evidence, and the Grisham Brothers Law Firm heard of Albert and Edith's pregnancy. Managing to rifle together some funds, the firm bought old Miss Wetherby's house  and were able to sell to Albert at a discounted price to house his growing family.

Albert is thankful for the long hours of work he put in previously and is pleased that the firm can see his potential. He takes Edith to their new residence and they share a rare passionate embrace on their front porch.

It has been six months now and Edith is more than ready to have this baby. She lets Albert know ... 'It's time.'

After a long labour, Edith and baby Florence are both enjoying a well-deserved rest.

Albert meets his daughter.

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

A few years have gone by and baby Florence isn't so much a baby anymore. A proper toddler now, Florence is keeping Edith very busy.

However, Edith is able to find some time to herself when Florence is interested in playing on her own.

But this doesn't happen that often. Florence can be clingy at times, and Edith is still learning how to be a mother.

Albert finds fatherhood quite difficult and doesn't have much patience for Florence and her questions. His approach to parenting differs a lot from Edith's, but there is little she can do about it. He's not a bad father, just more of an impatient one. Edith tries to be the support for her daughter and teach her everything she can.

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

It's that wonderful time of year for the Montgomery family and Windenburg: Winterfest! Edith has been decorating the house and making preparations for the big day.

Edith and Albert gather at the Winterfest Tree to sing together.

Florence is excited. She doesn't quite understand what Winterfest is, but the idea of a new toy is more than enough for her.

A new year, a new baby. Edith reveals the news to Albert. He isn't especially overjoyed by the news ...

Edith takes a moment to herself to sit and reflect. Wiping tears from her eyes, she looks up to see a concerned face looking at her. Nina Cornetta, the next door neighbour, calls out from the footpath. 'Are you okay?' Edith considers her answer, and responds with a small 'No.' With a look of understanding, Nina calls out 'Just across the street if you need anything.' Edith wipes her tears away and nods.

The next day there is a knock at the door. Edith opens it to find Nina standing on the front porch.
'I thought that you could use some company,' Nina says.
Edith invites her in.

Nina reassures Edith with some kind words. 'It will take him some time to get used to the idea. For him right now, it just means another mouth to feed, more stress, and he is probably worried about you as well.' There is an uncomfortable silence. 'You know what the statistics are like with pregnancy.' Edith swallows and takes Nina's hands warmly. 'Thank you,' she says. 'You've given me some well-needed perspective.' Nina smiles. 'Do you want to feel the baby?' Edith asks.

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

Edith is quite far along in her pregnancy now. Albert has had some time to come to terms with the prospect of a new child in the house. Thankfully, things are going well at the firm and he and Edith are able to save money for the future.

Albert and Edith share a moment.

Edith wakes in the middle of the night to a sharp, stabbing pain in her stomach.
'Albert,' she shakes him awake. 'I think it's time ...'

Thankfully, mother and baby survived.

Albert cradles his new son.

However, Florence has some grave concerns about the new addition to the family ...

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

After some time, Florence finds that baby Walter is unfortunately here to stay.

They may have their differences ...

But at the end of the day, Florence is glad to have her little brother around.

Edith patiently teaches Walter about different words with some flash cards.

Albert reads Walter a bedtime story.

Things at the Montgomery house seem to be quietly pleasant. A few more years pass, and Florence is growing to be a lovely little girl.

Edith tells Florence what to expect at school.

Albert warns her to behave.

'And no making friends with boys,' he says.
'Yes, Father,' Florence replies.

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

Work has been going very well for Albert. He adjusts his tie and hums to himself.

Edith has settled into a good routine at home, and with Florence at school and Walt learning to be more independent, she feels more in control of the house.

A good majority of her time is still spent with Walt, however.

Edith complains to Nina about Albert's disinterest in parenting.

'Have you even brought this up with him?' Nina asks.
'You know how men are,' Edith replies.
'Yes, but I don't know how your man is,' Nina says. 'They're his children as well. If he doesn't care, well, find a way to make him care.'

Edith thanks Nina.

Edith asks a local photographer to take a family photo in hopes to inspire Albert's interest in his family.

A few nights later, Edith catches Albert reading Walt a bedtime story.

And a few days after that, when Edith asks Albert to give Walt a bath, she is surprised to see him do it with a big smile.

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

Albert and Walt spend some quality time together. Since Edith's push for his engagement with the children, Albert has stepped up.

At dinner, Albert announces that one of his co-workers has a son that he would love to introduce to Florence. There is a careful silence as Florence looks to her mother for comfort. Edith dips her head slightly, and Florence says with a tremble in her voice, 'What's his name?'
'Harry,' Albert replies.

After dinner has been cleared and the dishes put away, Edith sits Florence down for a chat.
'I guess it is time to start thinking about these things, darling girl,' Edith says. 'He is a lovely boy, I'm sure you will like him.'

'Is he cute?' Florence giggles.
Edith looks at her with a slight smile.

Walt finds some time to himself to read. He is feeling some pressure from Albert and suspects that his father wants him to follow in his footsteps and take over his job at the firm. Although Walter enjoys the time he spends with his father, he is afraid of the expectations and pressure placed upon him.

The day has finally come for Florence. Harry has made a visit to the house and they have made each other's acquaintance.

Florence thinks the meeting went well. Though she may have gazed too deeply into Harry's eyes ...

Albert invites Harry to have a conversation ...

'I just want you to know that, although I think you're a good lad, I don't want you taking advantage of my daughter. She's a sweet girl, and you would do well making her happy. If she's unhappy, and that's your fault, well ...' Albert leaves the threat hanging in the air.

'No sir,' Harry replies. 'I'll do the right thing, sir.'

Florence and Harry are meeting more frequently and enjoying each other's company more and more.

And with Florence due to finish school and Harry's apprenticeship almost ready to begin, it seems like their future together is just about to start ... Is that the ring of wedding bells in the air?

CHAPTER ONE: 1890

While Florence is making changes to begin her new life, her little brother Walter is just growing up to begin high school. Albert is pushing Walt to follow in his footsteps and take his position in the Grisham Brothers Law Firm.

Walt isn't sure that's what he wants to do, but Albert isn't giving him much of a choice.

Walt mentions his concerns to his sister.
'Maybe you'll enjoy it,' Florence says.
'Maybe,' Walt replies glumly.
'Sorry Walter,' Florence says. 'I'm sure Father will understand if you tell him.'

They both look at each other. Walter rolls his eyes.
'Yeah, sure.'

Walter considers talking to his father. He decides to let it go. Maybe Florence is right. Maybe he will enjoy working at the law firm.

Florence talks to Harry about their future plans.

'Oh, I can't wait to cook you dinner every night,' Florence says.

'I can't wait to eat it every night,' Harry laughs.

Florence has finished her schooling and is celebrating her birthday with her family. Now that she is 18, she is ready to marry Harry and start their new life together.

'I love you, darling girl,' Edith says. 'Very proud of you,'
'Stop it Mother, you're going to make me cry,' Florence says with a trembling lip.
