Paradise Tossed: A SimTech Dynasty

For the past few months, I haven't been feeling like playing The Sims 4, so I thought starting a shorter dynasty challenge might capture my interest. It has!!!
After one false start in Willow Creek, I've decided to start my founders in Sulani.
Not only is it a gorgeous world, but Sulani will also allow me to avoid both hunting for custom content and extensively rebuilding/restyling lots in each era.

I don't plan on posting lengthy updates, only a summary update for each era.
(Edited to add: I ended up doing more than "a summary update for each era," but what's important is that I'm having fun, right?)
And we're off and running!

Paradise Tossed: A Prologue of Sorts

Man: Darn it, woman! I can't believe you nicked a burger from The McTree.
How could you forget? The Powers-That-Be specifically warned us to stay away from The McTree.
Woman: Well, there was this red-haired dude and he said eating just one would be okay….

Man: You know what this means, don't you? We'll be kicked outta here!
We'll have to leave and settle elsewhere! No more lazing around, waiting for meals to fall in our laps.
Woman: That's so harsh!  It was just a veggie burger! *sobs

Man: Hey, don't cry. We'll get by. We'll make a fresh start and live our lives the way we want!
Woman (brightens): Yeah, but no burgers! Our new life will be clean and green!
Man: And lean….very, very lean.

One extremely arduous journey later…
Mina (right): It took forever but we're finally here!
Tuki (left): You'll see, Mina. We'll create a paradise of our own!

Mina: Do you think we should apologize to the readers for our tacky backstory?
Tuki: Surely they can understand our Watcher's impatience to jump right into our challenge?
Mina: We can only hope!
Watcher: Sorry, folks!

Kahale Homes through the Ages

Homes of the Kahale Dynasty through the Ages

No Tech Era
The founders start out on a huge lot in Mua Pel'am.
They live in a basic hut with a triangular roof which offers a little extra shelter.

Low Tech Era
The Kahale family relinquishes their home lot to the native shamans, moving to Lani St. Taz.
They start out in a 6x6 hut plus garden, with the children sleeping in tents.

As the family grows, their home expands by an attached 6x6 hut, all enclosed within high fencing.

Mid Tech
Assuming leadership roles in the budding community, Mina and Tuki move their family to a hilltop overlooking Ohan'ali Village.
Here's their home at the end of the Mid Tech Era.
Obviously, it is an affordable knock-off ($16k unfurnished) of the original Chieftain's Villa residence.
To accommodate the large Kahale household, it has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms..
By the time the family can afford to fully furnish their home, the era ends with plans to relocate yet again.

More Tech Era
For this era, the family moves into a plantation style house, a popular architectural style for homes in Hawaii after the arrival of Christian missionaries from overseas.
Here's the photo of the house in Kauai, Hawaii, on which the Kahale home's exterior is modeled.

Here's what the house looks like when the family first moves in.
The smaller building on the back left is a greenhouse because...vampires.

After two weeks, we finally get around to some landscaping, which still is a work in progress.
It will probably not be finished before the More Tech Era ends.
And they plan, of course, to rebuild for the High Tech Era.

High Tech Era

Here's a photo fo the Kauai villa that served as the model for the Kahale home.

And here's the Kahales' High Tech home, much larger than necessary but still functional.
Actually, I'm finding that the larger the house, the more the sims drop their queues because I struggle to keep an eye on them all.

I'll add a view of the house later with night-time illumination.

Paradise Tossed: What the Heck? No Tech? (23 Aug)
« Reply #5 on: August 23, 2020, 01:40:51 PM »
1. What the Heck? No Tech? (No-Tech Era)

Week 1, Sunday
Mina: After arriving in Sulani, we explored all three of its islands.
This morning, we both agree to make our first home on the largest plot in Mua Pel'am.
Tuki carved four pillars over which we thatched a roof.
Happily, the climate here is warm and mild, so we can live in the open air for now.

Wednesday
Tuki can't help but get distracted from his primary goals of Fishing and Fitness.
He's been gathering harvestables for our future children and slowly cleaning up the island.

He's been jogging and swimming to the areas that require clean-up.
"Swim here" increases Fitness, but I don't think "Jog Here" does. *sighs
However, he's right in one respect. We are the caretakers of our natural environment.

Friday
This afternoon, our firstborn child ages up to a toddler. Isn't he charming?
We name him Makoa because we love that name.
Well, also because we were caught off guard by his sudden leap from the bassinet.

Saturday
Don't get me wrong. It's deeply satisfying to know we're aiding Mua Pel'am's restoration.
Realistically, though, Tuki is falling behind on Fishing and Fitness.
Plus, he's not getting any younger!

Week 2, Tuesday
Our daughter, Ava, ages up to a toddler today.
As for Makoa, we've already received his birthday notice.

Yes, he's filthy. If only he could wade in that kiddie pool by himself!
We're waiting for him to age up so he can take himself to the waterfall for a shower.

Thursday
It's been such a busy evening!
First, I get a notice that Tuki's aged up to an adult while he's out swimming around.
Not long after, we're visited by none other than the Repo Woman.

She threatens to confiscate something, but I don't find anything missing later.
Guess we didn't have anything worth repossessing?

A few moments later, Tuki finally maxes our fifth skill!
Gather round, children! We're moving to the next island over!
Say farewell to the waterfall!

No-Tech Stats

Lot: Admiral's Wreckage, 50x50 (Mua Pel'am, Sulani)
Lot traits: Off-the-Grid, Convivial, Study Spot
Max 5 skills:
   1. Day  7: Charisma, Mina
   2. Day  9:  Parenting, Mina
   3. Day 11: Singing, Mina
   4. Day 11: Fishing, Tuki
   5. Day 12: Fitness,Tuki

The Kahales
Founder: Tuki (12 days to Elder)
Founder: Mina (11 days to Adult; pregnant/2nd trimester)
Gen2: Makoa (6 days to Teen)
Gen2: Ana (1 day to Child)
Gen2: Mila (nooboo)

Watcher's Notes
*General plan: I'm copying callycat's strategy of consecutive pregnancies by one founder.
(@callycat - Don't forget to get yourself into the Hall of Fame for completing SimTech twice!)
I would like Mina to live as long as possible.
But I won't duplicate callycat's magnificent feat of having one sim complete the entire challenge. Mina is enlisting her family's help.
*Lot choice: I initially started on Key Point but my founders spent so much time swimming over for the waterfall, dig sites, and harvestables.
The founders restarted on the Admiral's Wreckage lot, which was a real time-saver.
*Toddler hygiene: I completely forgot about the Parenting social "Clean self."
Hygiene can be (very slowly) restored by supervised wading in the kiddie pool.
*Maxing skills: Wow, Tiny Living for the win! Mina and Tuki started their first aspirations without completing.
Mina's Soul Mate aspiration enabled her to buy both Morning Owl and Night Sim, but Tuki's Angling Ace only gave enough satisfaction to buy one of those two rewards.

A great start to things! I like the look of your initial pseudo-tent a lot, and Sulani's a fantastic choice of setting.

I very much enjoyed reading your strats for this challenge. Pretty sure I lack the patience to do all those careers with a single sim. :)
Thank you sharing all the details of how you played that one-sim dynasty!

Thank you, Deme!
I browsed lots of photos on "ancient Polynesian" homes online and was thinking: bamboo, tree bark, dried-grass thatching.
Then, I decided not go leaping into custom content building materials.
Sulani is a gorgeous world, isn't it? Hope you've been well during the lockdown.

Paradise Tossed: Flow with the Low (Low Tech Era)
« Reply #10 on: August 25, 2020, 01:38:00 AM »
2. Flow with the Low (Low-Tech Era)

Week 2, Thursday (Spring)

Mina: We're a family of five as we enter the Low-Tech Era.
We've moved to an empty plot of land in the middle of Lani St. Taz.
We hear the place is called "Journey's End."
Huh, who knows? Maybe our family will settle here for the next few eras.

Friday
At the end of the No Tech Era, Tuki and I were nearly done with our first aspirations.
Tuki needed to catch a fifth fish with bait for Angling Ace.
Meanwhile, I still had one more gold date left for Soulmate.
By Friday morning, our first two aspirations are finished.

That evening, Makoa tries making candles, which doesn't affect any of his skills.
Oh well.

Week 3, Sunday
Today, we celebrate our very first holiday: Spring Equinox.
What a surprise that we are able to summon gnomes to our home.

But There's No Place Like Gnome reassures me.
He says gnomes originate in medieval European folklore but they're a global phenom.
That's why they could travel to Sulani.
And, anyway, they were dying to meet us due to that whole McTree scandal.
Okaaaay….

Monday
What a dismal day for making the long trip to Granite Falls!
But we couldn't leave before today because our fourth child, Latifah, was still a nooboo.

The weather's just as miserable in Granite Falls.
Our toddlers love the fireplace in the Ranger's Station.

Venturing into the Deep Forest, we come across The Hermit.
We are all deeply impressed with his home, especially his cooking area.
Such wondrous objects, the likes of which we've never seen before!

Tuesday
Since we're enjoying fine weather today, I want to show our current home.
With a fifth child on the way, we so need to double the size of our home.
Sadly, we lack the funds now to expand our home and to enclose it with fencing.

I had to enclose the children's tents with a fence and locked gate, however.
Tuki keeps trying to sleep there instead of in our bed with me. Hmmph!

Thanks to the gnomes, we can finally grow carrots.
Tuki is eager to have a second son to raise!

I only need three more friends to become a Friend of the World!
Leaving the young ones at home with Tuki, I travel over to Mua Pel'am.

Our former home has been transformed by local shamans into a shrine.

As I stand before the steps leading to the main alter, I hear voices!
Over there to my left, I spot three new-to-me sims.
After I run over to introduce myself, I suddenly go into labor. Really?

Undaunted, I travel home with those three sims in tow.

Wednesday
They are nice enough to wait until I've delivered a little boy!
Who me? Of course, I didn't lock them inside our house.

When I make my 20th friend at last, it is just past midnight.

Friday
Once Tuki's cowplant matures, he will complete our fifth aspiration.
Standing in front of me is our firstborn, Makoa, who is now a handsome teen.

And, yes, I'm roasting beetles.
Since we've been spending so much time in Granite Falls, I'm now an aspiring Outdoor Enthusiast.
Summer is still a week away, though, so I'm sure I'll regret this decision later.
(mutters: "Tuki and his dumb cowplant!")

Saturday
This morning, our second-born, Ava, aged up to a teen, too.
She'd been clearing out the flies and roaches near our trash bin.
Then, right after we get the notice that she's within "Responsible range,"  she vanishes.

Tuki runs back there to look for our little girl. Where did she go?

Oh.
The whole family is now plunged into grief.
I still can't believe she's gone! What a shame you never got to meet her as a beautiful teen!

Week 4, Sunday
Yesterday, Tuki completed Freelance Botanist and maxed Wellness.
All that stands between us and the next era is my Guitar skill.

Luckily, today is New Skill Day.
I buy the Savant reward, too. No messing around!

The toddler? That's our second son, Pele. He looks so much like his father!

The sun's gone down yet I'm still strumming away on my guitar!

Our first son, Makoa, has been a great help with the garden.
Yesterday, we traded away most of our fruit, vegetables, and flowers.
We finally have our second hut and a fence enclosing most of our property.

And we're ready to proceed to the Mid-Tech Era!
Neighbors, schools, merchants, iceboxes, taverns, guilds, and other quality of life improvements!
We have so many decision and options before us!

The Kahales
The ages below are based on the Short Lifespan.
Founder: Tuki (2 days to Elder)

Gen2: Makoa (3 days to Young Adult)
Gen2: Ana (died as a Teen)
Gen2: Mila (2 day to Teen)
Gen2: Latifah (5 days to Teen)
Gen2: Pele (0 days to Child)
Gen2: Avana (Day 1 nooboo)

Gallery Lots
*Shrine of Sulani (50x50 park) by Scheinheilig1603: A stunning build!!!
I shamelessly added some objects to offer more park activities for the whole family.

Watcher's Notes
*Reduce & Recycle lot trait: I didn't expect clearing flies from a trashcan to cause death.
My sim suddenly lifted in the air and was covered with black things.
No Grim Reaper, no urn/gravestone outdoors (I found the gravestone later in the family inventory).
Needless to say, I won't be using that lot trait again in this challenge. *rolls eyes
*Freezing to Death: I was shocked to see Tuki turn blue from freezing to death while practicing yoga at Granite Falls. And he hadn't maxed Wellness yet!
We immediately left Granite Falls and Tuki was fine after a bath.
Oddly nobody else was freezing except him.
*Outdoor Enthusiast: I hate the "Sleep in a tent for 5 nights" goal.
Why oh why did I choose that aspiration for Mina? *sobs
*Gnomes: I am interpreting "Low Tech" as the Medieval period and "Mid-Tech" as the Renaissance/Early Modern period.
Since gnomes played a part in medieval European folklore and my sims are living in a more European than Polynesian house, I figure they can have gnomes, too. :)

Poor Ava! To avoid flies and roaches, you have to empty the trash. You can just select “empty trash” and the Sim will disappear off lot for a bit. BUT, the better way is to sort out compostibles or recyclables. If the trash is very full, you may have to repeat this several times. This will create a compost, discarded food, or recycle pile in the Sim’s inventory. If you have a bug box, the compost can be fed to the bugs. Those piles also make great fertilizer, giving as much of a quality boost as expensive fish.

@reggikko

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Sometimes it's interesting to just try out new stuff without researching everything beforehand.
I'd been using the "Clean up" (without a sink) and "Empty trash" actions to build the children's Responsibility since they "missed school" a few days.
(Edited to add: Since the children can't attend school in Low Tech, I've been using reggikko's idea to arrive in Granite Falls before classes start.
That way, their academic performance and responsibility don't drop, since the non-existent school thinks they're on vacation, not playing hooky.)

Ava died because I had her repeatedly try to clear out the flies and the roaches. I failed to take a screenshot because I didn't even realize that she was dying in the warm of flies.
After her death, her father did empty the trash (then I deleted the trash bin in an angy fit).
I appreciate your tip about using compost as a fertilizer (I'd only used it for bugs in a different save). Haha, I might try the Reuse & Recycle lot trait again later but play more carefully.
I still have much to learn about Eco Lifestyle--it's quite exciting. Thanks again.

I figured you already knew most of what I typed. :)

I agree about discovering things without looking them up. I've been really enjoying that with Eco Lifestyle because it has so many small gameplay features that probably aren't noticed without extensive play. It's definitely my favorite expansion so far!

Once I got to low tech and access to the woodworking bench, I gave my heir two bug boxes that his dad "built." Taking care of the bugs builds responsibility and provides tasty (?) grubs. I need to get on the ball and post something, but you know how bad I am at that!

Nah, I'm still pretty much an Eco Lifestyle noob. I've only played it a a few in-game weeks in my BACC, and just one in-game week on an Off-the-Grid lot in Evergreen Harbor.
I love the world and build/buy items in Island Living, but prefer the gameplay features of Eco Lifestyle.

Haha, yes, please post and share! We're all dying to hear what's going on in your No Tech and Low Tech eras. 😁
I always learn a lot from how you play!
