Chapter 99 - I Believe In Magic

Moira wakes early on Sunday morning and takes a moment to make the bed and watch her husband sleep.

Then she goes up to the rooftop deck, where the cool ocean air arcs softly over the city below. It's a peaceful place, for the moment (Archie has finally collapsed in bed after a long night of drink-mixing). And Moira needs solitude for what she's about to do.
When packing up the house in Riverview, Moira came across a dusty old lamp that had apparently been in the family for years without being touched. Angela was aware of the lamp, being the mad scientist of the family, and Moira, being a Genius, helped her put together their scrappy knowledge. This wasn't just any lamp. It was a magic lamp.

In Moira's scientific research, and in the readings she's done in preparation for her future medical career, she's learned that the science surrounding human birth is foggy at best. Desired outcomes are not always achieved. And there are very few proven methods for securing certain results.
This is one of them. Or so they say.

Glitter and smoke explode out of the lamp, and then there's nothing. It takes a moment for Moira to spot the blue being trotting quickly away from her. She's already INSIDE THE HOUSE! What if the family sees?!

"Hey, excuse me! Miss Genie? I'm over here!"

"Oh, THERE you are! I'm so pleased it's you who summoned me and not the mustachioed old man downstairs! My name is Tara, and I'll be taking care of you today. Now, can I start you off with anything? A wish, perhaps?"
Moira explains.

"Okay, so here's the thing. I'm a scientific researcher, Tara. And I'm going to be a doctor one day. That's all I've ever wanted, to master the study of science and become a top-level doctor. So...I'm not really into magic, or any sort of supernatural stuff. My instincts always tell me to trust science, not--"

"Aren't you descended from a fairy? And isn't your ghostie aunt a famous singer? And wasn't your great-great-great-great-however-many-greats grandfather an alchemist?"
"How do you know all that?!"

"I matched with the Grim Reaper on Simder. We're...friends. Sometimes, he tells me things."

"Oookay. Anyway...yeah, you're right. Even though my family has a lot of history with magic and the supernatural...this is kind of outside my wheelhouse. But--I want a big family, Tara. Most of my time and most of my desires are dedicated to my future career, but--family is also really important to me. I want to have multiple children. But I can't have an endless maternity leave get in the way of my work, and there's no scientific or medical method that guarantees what I'm looking for."

"I see. I think I can help, Miss Loveland."
"Wonderful, thank you! Okay, I wish for a large family in a short amount of time. Using safe, thoroughly tested methods that have been studied in peer-reviewed journals, preferably."

"Wow. Anything else?"
"I think that's it."
"Well, my methods aren't exactly "peer-reviewed" or 'thoroughly tested', but they are a bit of a spectacle. I'm going to shoot lasers from my eyes now, okay?"
"W-What?"

*FWSHOOM*
"Gyahh!"

"Um...Tara? Why do I feel so light and...and...is it possible to feel sparkly? I've never read anything in my research that--"
"I'd say it's possible, since it's happening right now."
"Tara, I--I think I--

"I BELIEVE IN MAGIC!"

And just like that, it's over. The genie vanishes without so much as a sassy quip and Moira is left feeling sparkly, and nothing more.

She hurries downstairs to find Lydell.

"Babe. You will never guess who I just talked to upstairs."
"Your mother? The rest of us are down here. Unless you're talking about Nibs. I think he might be playing in the bathtub up there again."
At this point, Moira is overcome with hunger, so she pauses this highly romantic moment to grab some breakfast.

"Moira, you look different this morning. You look a bit...sparkly. Are you sparkly?"
"No, Dad. Your vision's just going weird in your old age."
"Oh. Is that the scientific term for it? 'Going weird'?"
"Yes."

Breakfast eaten, Moira takes her husband up to the bedroom and explains everything.

"So you made a wish on a magical blue lady and now we're guaranteed to have triplets?"
"Pretty much."
"Awesome."

Later that night, Moira starts feeling squeamish while tending the garden.

And the next day, her research is interrupted by a new discovery.

"Lydell, it's happening! We're going to have some babies!"
"The ambiguity of that statement makes me nervous, but otherwise I am SO EXCITED!"

Lydell: "Let me know if I can get you anything, darling. Any craving, a massage--just let me know, okay?"
Moira: *NOM NOM NOM*
