Entry 221: Graduations
« Reply #285 on: May 22, 2023, 08:56:23 AM »

Before the ceremony, I found Lacey in the garden dressed in her graduation robes looking thoughtful.

"Something on your mind?"

With a small nod of her head, she answered, "Just thinking about all the times I DIDN'T want to be in the garden weeding, but now that I've decided to follow a different path, I feel like I'll miss it…"

"Miss weeding?"

"Not weeding exactly, just the quiet moments I guess, the sun shining brightly overhead and the breeze drifting from the orchard bringing the smell of citrus and apples." With a laugh she added, "The lure of the sprinklers!"

"You've always loved the outdoors, Lace, like most of us Swansons.  And this garden will always be here for you. But if not this one, there'll be another, even if it's just a lone tree, a small pond, or a bench by a flower bed. Wherever there's a bit of nature, take a moment and breathe it in, and you'll be right back here on the farm…Oh, who am I kidding, I'm just a gardener and a fisherman who likes to cook! I'm not brilliant like your mother or Iris, Lace. I've made my share of mistakes, and then some! And I rarely say the right thing or find the right words…"

Her voice tight, Lacey murmured, "Your words were perfect, Dad. You definitely said the right thing. I'll always have this with me, the peace of the farm and all the love I was raised with. I love you, Dad."

"I love you too, Lace."

Our timing was perfect as we met up with Lawrence and Lily on the sidewalk outside City Hall.

Our family group was perfect too as it included Grandma Brooke and Grandpa Jerad.

If someone would have told me that our family founders would be present at my daughters high school graduation I would have laughed them off the farm.

But no one was laughing now, in fact, we were a pretty solemn group.

But that changed once the ceremony was over with everyone chatting and congratulating Lacey on her achievements as she graduated with highest honors and was valedictorian for her class.

And her classmates voted her Most Likely To Save the World!

Which had Keri shooting Lacey a concerned look while Lacey clutched her diploma!

Keri and I couldn't be prouder of Lacey, but we'd spent our lives keeping her safe, only to have Lacey choose to put her own life on the line for others.

That inept burglar has a lot to answer for!

Joran wasn't concerned about his sister though as he quickly congratulated her and turned his attention to Loretta.

A very grown-up Loretta!

I'm sure Joran was hoping to spend some time with her today.

But Grandma Brooke wanted to commemorate the occasion saying, "Everyone back inside for a family photo! This is the first graduation Jerad and I have attended in more years than I want to count, and I want a keepsake!"

And what a keepsake it was!

My founder grandparents looking as proud as Keri and I as Lacey posed in her graduation robes.

And Joran lounged at his sister's feet, looking pretty grown-up himself in his tux.

It was close to sunset when Lawrence finally came out and threw his diploma high.

But instead of congratulating her son on his achievements, Lily mocked Lacey!

The family members still in attendance, along with Lawrence's dad, Theodore, were outraged at Lily's behavior.

Their concern etched in their dismayed faces and gasps.

But my money was on Lacey as my brave daughter, currently undergoing extensive training at the Police Academy, was more than a match for Lily!

Lacey had waited with me for Lawrence and then they headed back inside for a photo of the two of them.

Seeing them together standing close under the City emblem, I felt proud  but a little sad too.

In her valedictorian speech Lacey said that graduation was a beginning, not an ending, but it was one more step in my daughter's journey…away from the farm, away from me.

It's hard letting go, but knowing how capable she is and that she has Lawrence by her side, makes it a little easier.

But all thoughts of Lacey flew out of my head as Loretta stopped me on the sidewalk outside City Hall.

"Mr. Swanson, I think you need to hurry home! I can feel a ghost calling out and I think it's one of yours!"

I arrived home just in time to see Grandpa Jerad fending off ghostly Grandma Rielle on the back porch!

You'd think he'd be used to ghosts after all the time he spent in the Netherworld especially since she's his granddaughter!

I hurried inside and made up another plate of ambrosia, setting in on the kitchen counter with hope curling around my heart.

Would Grandma Rielle be joining us soon?

Coming back to Grandpa Leonard?

As I waited, my phone dinged with a new batch of photos and updates on our Uni students.

Shawn and Shasta were checking out their grades on the front lawn as they'd been delivered while they were playing catch.

They'd both completed their first term with solid 'A's', but needed another term to graduate.

Patches showed a bit more enthusiasm, smiling brightly, as she'd also earned an 'A' for the term and was graduating with highest honors!

Barbara let out a squeal of shock when she got grades too, even though she wasn't enrolled in any classes!

Not sure what's up with that!

Iris knew she'd aced all her finals and would be graduating with highest honors as well, but she was used to being a high achiever and took it in stride as a brilliant Wainwright would.

Karam was still asleep when grades arrived but dragged himself out of bed and peeked at his grades sleepily.

But seeing his final 'A' and then reading that he'd also graduated with highest honors had him pumping his fists into the air and shouting loudly, "Yes!!!"

Graduating students, faculty, and friends gathered at the Stadium Complex mid-morning with Iris, graduating Summa Cum Laude in Science & Medicine, leading the crowd.

Iris was not only brilliant but the most outgoing and charismatic girl I knew so it was no wonder that she'd made plenty of friends.

Karam lead the Fine Arts students and faculty as he'd also graduated Summa Cum Laude in his major.

Shereen was front and center, proudly supporting her half-brother in his achievement.

Terrin was in the back with Barbara patiently waiting his turn to the enter the building.

But Terrin entered first with Barbara moaning, "How did I get stuck with the jocks! I should have at least got to sit with the Fine Arts students since there's no Music Department!"

Terrin replied, "You should feel lucky we got seats at all in this crush! Uni graduation ceremonies are known for their mess ups, you getting a Grade Report was just the first of many, I'm sure!"

Petal was almost alone when she entered for the Athletic department, also graduating Summa Cum Laude.

After hours of droning speeches, graduates started exiting from the building.

And the glitches continue as Patches emerges without her gradation robes though she's holding her diploma.

She graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Technology degree.

Iris follows, tossing her diploma into the air with a cheer.

Then it's Vervain's turn, also not wearing a graduation cap or robe, but sporting a big smile as he holds up his diploma for all to see.

He achieved highest honors in Technology just like Patches.

Karam's next, waving his diploma proudly, as the sun sets.

And as darkness descends, Petal, last to enter and exit, cheers and excitedly waves her own diploma.

Terrin shouted, "Iris, any final words to sum up your time here at SimU?"

Iris, never one to miss an opportunity, stepped in front of a spotlight.

She tilted her head and framed her face with her pointed fingers, replying, "Call me Dr. Wainwright!"

Graduations, a time of endings and beginnings.

For Lacey, a time for quiet reflection.

For the Uni crowd, a time for one last party!

A party that lasted from dusk until dawn!

Terrin says those are the best kind...

Entry 222: Bonfire Bash
« Reply #286 on: May 26, 2023, 09:09:12 AM »

Terrin collects one last tip for his final performance at Uni.

Barbara ends her closing song with an impressive strum across the strings as her small audience listens attentively.

An auburn-haired student sighs and says, "I was hoping you'd play and sing for a while. Most of my dormmates have already gone back home. My dorm is like a tomb!"

Barbara says, "Not tonight. Not here anyway! We're throwing a bonfire party to celebrate five of my housemates graduating and everyone's invited!"

A student professor puts her finger to her lips, contemplating joining the party, as a younger student asks, "Will there be food? I'm starving!"

Barbara laughs and says, "Join us and find out!"

Despite a light drizzle, Patches and Terrin got a decent fire started as guests arrived.

A couple carried umbrellas, but others ignored the raindrops as they chatted and scoped out the party.

With the party centered around the bonfire, Patches opted to join Rashad in the nearby hot tub.

Patches was definitely more at ease with focusing on Rashad than on a big crowd.

As the rain stopped, Petal coaxed the flames even higher.

And with more logs added by every new arrival, it was soon a blazing bonfire!

More and more guests showed up and many were hoping that Terrin would perform.

But before that could happen, a disturbance had the party crowd shooting looks around the room and groaning in dismay.

All except for a very pleased Richard Randall who had just been kissed by Iris!

Then Paul Biden tried to get in on the action as well, flirting with Iris in front of the whole crowd!

But Iris just laughed him off saying bitingly, "Richard might be grumpy and have no sense of humor, but he's also lucky and choosy about his friends, so I didn't mind giving him a congratulatory kiss! But these lips don't touch those of evil, lazy, cowards who two-time on their live-in girlfriend!"

Paul sneered, "Don't act like you're not like me, Iris! You may be brilliant like your nerdy parents, but you've gotten around! Does your singer boyfriend know about how you cheated on your own boyfriend? With your best friend's boyfriend, no less!?!  Or that that jock you were dating dropped you like a rock when he got picked for the Llamas!?! Your reputation proceeds you, Iris! Everyone knows you're a flirt!"

Pauls' harsh words about Iris's past had the room clearing out, fast.

All except for Iris, Terrin, Paul, and Richard.

Along with Barbara who stood behind Iris and faced off with Paul saying, "I'll watch your back, Iris. I don't trust evil fairies!"

Iris stared solemnly at Terrin and began, "I can't deny what Paul said Terrin. I made some bad choices when I was younger. And I do flirt, more than a bit, it's my nature, unfortunately. But never with the intention of cheating on you! Not tonight. Not ever!"

Terrin's gaze never left Iris's face as he said, "There's no need to explain, Iris. I KNOW you. You love me and I love you. Just the way you are, flirting included! That will never change."

Shooting Paul a withering glance, he added, "Fairies are known for making trouble! This one more than most! And Richard is…grumpy but harmless. Everyone knows he's had a crush on you since he met you. I can relate! You are hard to resist, Iris Wainwright! But I don't begrudge him one kiss! It'll probably be the only one he ever gets."

Richard's head drooped as he said, "Probably."

Terrin mumbled, "Sorry. That came out wrong."

"No. It's most likely true. Iris is one of the few friends I have. I'm sorry for causing this mess."

Iris quickly said, "It wasn't YOUR fault! No need for YOU to apologize."

Paul grimaced as the tension left the room and said, "You're all pathetic! A bunch of goody-goodies! And if you think I'M going to apologize, you can think again. I'm going out to liven up the party!"

Despite the indoor drama, the party was still going strong in the backyard.

The bonfire was even bigger than before, the flames licking hungrily up the wooden logs.

With a burst of popping and sparkles from the test tube Paul threw adding to the display.

But Terrin and Iris found a spot to cuddle on the grass and watch the stars.

As Terrin focused on the sky, he said quietly, "You're just like the stars, Iris. Bright and shining, bringing light wherever you go. And I want you to light up my world for the rest of my life! Marry me, Iris?"

Iris jumped up, pulling Terrin up with her, and squeezed him tight as she sighed and said, "Yes."

Terrin was shocked, "That's it? No arguments about being too young? It being too soon? Just, 'yes'?"

"Just yes, Terrin! The way you reacted inside, calm, collected, sure about my love for you and yours for me…there's nothing to argue about. We've both made this commitment in our hearts, so it's time to make it legal!"

Terrin laughed and squeezed Iris even tighter as he said, "Then I'd better buy a ring!"

"A big one! All shiny and sparkly!"

They both laughed and held each other close, savoring the special moment.

In celebration of the momentous event, Shawn helped Karam with a keg stand, his views on the party reflected most of the guests, " Best. Party. Ever!"

Patches even left the hot tub and grabbed a cup of juice!

While more test tubes broke on the bonfire with bursts of popping and cascades of sparkles giving way to cheers.

As the sun rose, Barbara helped a guest with a final keg stand.

Some guests started saying their goodbyes and headed back to their dorms to pack for the trip home.

Another test tube was thrown on the flames, but instead of pretty sparkles, it spewed a vibrant green gas!

Karam decided a shower was in order as the noxious smell permeated his clothes.

But Petal persuaded him to go skinny dipping instead!

While Patches, showered and clean, still had juice on her mind.

Or rather, the juice influenced her actions!

Because, under it's influence, she did something totally out of character.

She crept behind her two skinny dipping housemates and stole Petal's clothes!

And Karam's too!

Then Patches nonchalantly walked away as Shereen hid her smile.

The two skinny dippers oblivious to Patches' actions.

Until they got out of the hot tub!

Petal stood there, first puzzled and then shocked, as she asked, "Where are our clothes!?!"

"Right on the ground were we left them," Karam began, then his voice trailed off as he saw the empty grass.

"No, they're not! They're gone!"

The two of them suffered through the indignity of it until the newly arrived maid noticed their predicament.

And threw them both a towel!

But the damage was already done and Karam knew they'd definitely be getting calls from their parents.

Being newly graduated won't excuse photos of them in the paper wearing nothing but their birthday suits!

The Uni students and their friends threw a graduation party to remember.

It was filled with flirting, a never-to-be-forgotten kiss, arguments, apologies, and even some skinny dipping!

As well as plenty of juice and keg stands.

Leading to shy Patches pulling off the prank of the year!

Most importantly, it lead to Terrin and Iris's engagement!

Boy am I glad to be Terrin's father, not Karam's or Petal's, as I get to offer congratulations instead of another lecture!

Aw! Congratulations to your Iris and her engagement to Terrin! He's probably the best suited to her of anyone she's come across in either universe! I wish them all the best! I got a huge kick out of the fairy causing drama though. Gotta watch those fae!

Also, not surprised at all at Patches' antics. That rebellious trait...  ;D

Best of luck to all your graduating sims in their future endeavors, and I've really enjoyed your updates.

Entry 223: Iris Finds A Way
« Reply #288 on: June 01, 2023, 09:09:07 PM »

Though we'd become used to ghostly family visitors, even encouraged them, this particular one caught us by surprise.

Grandpa Nolan floated serenely by Keri like he'd done it all his ghostly life, like the other family ghosts.

But he hadn't!

The family journal only noted one stellar appearance; when he visited Grandma Summer while she was still alive.

Once she passed, the two of them were content in the Netherworld, not visiting us at all.

Maybe his urn being moved downstairs helped?

There was only one way to find out.

Ask!

So, after my initial nervousness disappeared, I struck up a conversation.

Or tried to.

But Grandpa Nolan wasn't quite as chatty as the other family ghosts.

He gave me a smile, a brief nod, and a wave.

And then sat down in one of the nursery rockers!

Rocking steadily but not saying a word.

Grandma Brooke sat down in a rocker too, asking, "Is everything okay, Nolan?"

But he just rocked without responding.

Growing anxious, Grandma Brooke blurted, "Has something happened to Summer, Nolan!?! To her ghost in the Netherworld?"

Grandpa Nolan startled at Summer's name, but still didn't respond.

Exasperated with his silence, Grandma Brooke, sighed and asked, "Can you at least tell us if you, Summer, or Rielle are planning on eating Scott's ambrosia? Trying to come back to us?"

The only answer was the brief rush of sound as Grandpa Nolan's ghostly form turned into the familiar golden essence as he returned to his urn.

Grandma Brooke was so disturbed by the event that Grandpa Jerad sat with her on the couch trying to comfort her.

But she wouldn't be consoled, angrily asking, "After all this time of staying away, why would he show up now but refuse to answer our questions!?!"

Grandpa Jerad looked away, unable to come up with a satisfying answer and calm Grandma Brooke down.

From the archway, I said, "I don't know why he won't talk to us, but I think I know the answer as to why he's showing up now. I moved their urns from upstairs down to the display stand in the hall. Where yours used to sit. Maybe because we spend so much more time down here, our family energy called to him?"

Grandma Brooke thought about it and said, "That's a pretty good theory, Scott. And maybe Nolan wasn't refusing to answer, maybe he can't yet. Maybe he and Summer have spent so much time in the Netherworld that just materializing is all he can do!"

"Well, I won't give up on them! I'll keep making ambrosia and give them every opportunity to eat it!"

After seeing Grandpa Nolan's ghost and Grandma Brooke's heartache, I couldn't wait any longer to see Terrin.

He and Iris, with Patches and Shereen, had rented a house across the street and had moved in last week.

We'd offered to help, but Terrin had insisted they could do it on their own.

Then he'd strangely added that he'd call us soon to set up a time to visit!

Something was going on and I wasn't waiting any longer to see my son.

And my reception was just as odd.

Shereen was giving Iris a nervous glance while Patches exclaimed, "Oh, what brings you by Mr. Swanson?"

From behind them Iris sighed and said, "It's okay girls, I'll take it from here."

Shereen moved toward the waiting cab as Iris stepped forward.

Patches, ever the loyal friend, tapped her foot, pursed her lips and said, "Are you sure, Iris?"

Iris, her usual confident self, said firmly, "They had to find out sooner or later."

"Find out what Iris?"

But my words died in my throat as Iris's form registered in my mind.

Her very pregnant form!

I didn't even acknowledge Terrin's call from the front porch.

Frankly, I was so stunned, I no longer had the power of speech!

As Iris walked around me, I kept my eyes trained on Shereen as the cab tooted impatiently, and Patches gave her a cheery goodbye.

My gaze looking anywhere but at Iris's bulging belly!

Iris gave her stomach a pat and said, "It's okay to look, Mr. Swanson, even stare. I know it's a shock, finding me pregnant. Believe me, Terrin and I were more than a bit surprised at how quickly it happened!"

I finally spluttered, "But HOW Iris!?! PlantSims don't have babies like the rest of us! Even you and Terrin came from Forbidden Fruit!"

Iris waved her hands trying to calm me down, "I know. I know. Please let me explain. It's rather a long story and pretty technical…"

"The short version, please, Iris! In simple words I can understand."

"Okay. The short version. All of my mother's tests had determined that I could not bear a child, simply produce Forbidden Fruit and pass on my genetics to a PlantSim baby that way, without the child actually having a biological father."

"I understand that I read about it when I was researching about Terrin's condition."

"Right. But after meeting Karam, Petal, and Barbara, at SimU, and finding out they all had one PlantSim parent, I asked Professor Dorsey how such a thing was possible, a PlantSim having biological children. She told me she fell in love with a human student, and they wanted to have children together. She changed her major to Science and Medicine and came up with a medical treatment to allow for PlantSim conception and birth, just like humans. Karam, Petal, Barbara, and their siblings, are proof that it worked for all three test couples! Shawn, Shasta, and Shereen were a little different as they were test tube babies with Forbidden Fruit DNA added later…"

"Short version, Iris!"

"Right. Well, they never had a couple who were both PlantSims to test."

Horrified, I shout, "So they used you and Terrin!?!"

Iris sighs and says, "Of course not. We volunteered. I underwent the treatment before we left Uni."

"But that was only a week ago…"

"Yes, the results happened faster than any of us had predicted. Professor Dorsey thought it would take several treatments before I could actually conceive…but it happened right away. And…you're looking at the results. Terrin has been bursting to tell you for days, but I wanted to wait until after our child was born, here and healthy, and safe, you know."

"More like a 'fait accompli', Iris!"

Iris couldn't help her smirk as she said, "It's easier to ask for forgiveness after the fact rather than permission up front!"

Trying not to smile I add, "Typical Iris logic, but it's not like you and Terrin needed permission, Iris. You're both over the age of consent."

Iris frowned, "You don't know my mother! She would have wanted to review all the research, interview all three of the other couples, run multiple tests on ALL of the offspring, and list the pros and cons of ME undergoing the procedure, while my father totally freaked about everything that COULD go wrong!"

"I see. That's why you kept it a secret?"

"Well, it didn't seem fair to tell one set of parents and not the other."

With a hesitant breath, she added, "So, you're not mad about the pregnancy?"

I pulled her into a hearty hug and said, "Not mad about the pregnancy, Iris. Concerned about this whole process, especially that you didn't tell us sooner. But how could I be mad? My son is going to be a father, making me a grandfather!"

Keri was having her own heart-to-heart with Terrin by the front porch.

"A baby, Terrin!?! Why didn't you tell us as soon as you knew? There's so much to do! A wedding to plan and a baby shower…"

Terrin shook his head and said, "Sorry, Mom. Iris said there was no way she was going to walk down the isle a pregnant bride! So, we got married at City Hall right after we arrived in town. But I'm sure Lacey will be all about a big family wedding!"

"Lacey isn't even engaged and she and Lawrence are focusing on their careers."

"But they'll get married sometime. And since Joran's staying on the farm and head over heels for Loretta, he'll be proposing to her soon after he graduates!"

"Nice try, but your siblings upcoming wedding plans isn't going to get you out of having some kind of party!"

"But a new baby will. Honestly, Mom, we're going to be too busy for anything but birthday parties once our child is born. I see enough of crowds when I'm singing and Iris's work at the hospital is demanding."

With hope in her voice, Keri asked, "You're both working here in AP? So, you're planning on staying in town for a while?"

Terrin smiled, "For a while. I want the baby to know his or her grandparents. Then we'll head to Sunset Valley to spend some time with Iris's family."

"But what about Bridgeport and all your dreams?"

Terrin said, "Bridgeport isn't going anywhere, Mom! We'll get there someday. Right now, this is where we want to be."

Keri was so happy with the news she gave Terrin a big hug.

"That's wonderful, Terrin! We'll have you with us a little longer, Iris, and a new baby too!"

Then it was my turn to speak to my son.

"Congratulations, Terrin! I'd thought I'd just be congratulating you on your engagement , but a baby is….life-changing!"

Terrin's proud smile was proof enough that he was really looking forward to becoming a father.

His words cemented it, "Don't I know it! I've been reading baby books and making sure Iris gets plenty of rest. I've even coordinated my gigs with Patches and Shereen's schedules so that one of us is always here with Iris."

"With your attention to detail, I'm sure you'll make a great father!"

"Coming from you, Dad, that means a lot!"

Excitedly I added, "And a violet nursery would be just the thing! I know it's not one of the traditional pastel colors, but it's been proven that babies see black and white first, then bright colors so…"

Terrin's face lights up when I mention a nursery but, instead of agreeing with my suggestion, he says, "Let me show you the house, Dad. It's got four bedrooms and four bathrooms, and it's just perfect for us!"

He explained, "These overview shots will give you the best view. Here's the main floor, dominated by the huge kitchen and dining area, with the stairs to the basement and upper floor. The living room is through the archway with a huge bay window to bring in lots of natural light. The back of the house has two ensuite bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with twin beds. And off the kitchen, tucked in between the living room and a bathroom, is the nursery!"

"The nursery was the icing on the cake, especially for Iris, as the designer had painted two of the walls in a pinky/purple color then added a soft yellow above the chair rail on the other two walls with green, pink, and purple butterflies flying all over! The perfect room for Iris's daughter!"

"It's not violet but it's amazing. I can see why Iris loves it. But what if you have a boy?"

"Well, your favorite color is violet, so I don't see why it wouldn't work for both! But we can always change it."

The upper floor was amazing as well, as the whole floor was a huge master bedroom with ensuite.

The main room was painted a soft green with a chair rail breaking up the walls and it was large enough for Iris's Science station and computer desk along the wall opposite the double bed with plenty of space in between.

The windowed bump out was perfect for Terrin's double easel painting studio, letting in plenty of natural light.

Last, but not least, there was a huge open concept basement that had a complete band set up with keyboards, drums, bass, and guitar.

Foosball and tennis tables were in opposite corners, providing plenty of game play room.

A workout area, complete with stereo and mirror, was against one wall.

For convenience, there was also another full bath.

While I chatted with Terrin, Keri had made a beeline for Iris, exclaiming, "Just look at you! You're glowing, Iris, pregnancy certainly agrees with you!"

Iris frowned and said, "Tell that to my stomach! I spent the first few days on the floor next to the commode!"

"Well, you'd never know it now. And that sounds like a pretty typical pregnancy. Are you and Terrin planning to have more children this way or the PlantSim way?"

Iris laughed and said, "Let's see how having one baby works before I commit to others!"

Keri couldn't resist doing all the expected grandmother-to-be actions.

Feeling the baby kick.

"Oh, that was a strong one! Future soccer player in there?"

Iris laughed and said, "Certainly feels like it, especially when I'm trying to sleep!"

Cooing over him or her, "Hi there, I'm your Gram. I can't wait to cuddle you and feed you and play blocks when you're bigger! See you soon, little one."

Even putting her head close to Iris's tummy and listening intently.

Giggling when all she heard was a loud hungry grumble!

Keri hugged Iris saying, "Well, mommy-to-be, you've been on your feet long enough. Let's get you inside and Scott can cook you some lunch."

At the mention of lunch, Iris's stomach rumbled again, and with a laugh she said, "Well, no use saying I'm not hungry! Ever since conception I've been starving, but Professor Dorsey says that's normal because the baby needs proper food, not PlantSim nutrients."

While Terrin gave Keri her tour of the house, I threw together my famous spaghetti with veggie sauce and Iris and I both dug in.

"This is terrific, Mr. Swanson! I don't cook much, but I'd love your recipe. I'll need something to impress my parents with when we get to Sunset Valley."

"To impress them or distract them, Iris?'

"Both. Even with a happy, healthy grandchild to coo over, I know my mother's going to give me that LOOK because I didn't discuss the whole pregnancy treatment process with them beforehand. Mom will be more understanding about it, being a mother herself, especially after I show her all the research that Professor Dorsey did with my added documentation. Then the scientist in her will take over and she'll be hooked, just like I was! And, even though this research will change the PlantSim world, my dad will still freak out thinking of all the things that COULD have gone wrong."

There was something in Iris's voice that had me asking, "Is there something you're NOT telling me?"

Iris's fork paused mid-way to her mouth, and gulped before she confessed, "The treatment process, conception, and birth have posed no problem for any of the couples to have a human child, but adding Forbidden Fruit DNA to truly make them a PlantSim has had…mixed results."

"Harmful results for the children!?!"

"Not harmful! Just…unpredictable. But it's a slim chance for that…"

"How slim?"

"About 25%. But that's because the test group is so small! Only four children had PlantSim DNA added and three of them never had any issues with it."

"And the fourth one? Is that child okay!?!"

"Bane is perfectly fine. He just loses his PlantSim genetics from time to time and reverts to being completely human. A fascinating case actually…"

"Iris! Sometimes, I think you can be a little too smart for your own good. We're not talking about case studies, this is your own child, my grandchild! His or her life is more important than any research!"

Iris blew out a small breath, "Professor Dorsey said the same thing and so did Terrin. I'll be careful, I promise."

We've been visited for the first time by Grandpa Nolan's ghost, so I'll be making ambrosia to entice him, Grandma Summer, and Grandma Rielle, to join us back here on the farm.

And Terrin and Iris have astounded us all by secretly getting married as Iris is expecting their child!

A PlantSim having a natural child! It boggles my very unscientific mind.

Leave it to Iris to find a way!

Technically, it was Professor Dorsey's treatment, but, knowing Iris, I'm sure she's added her own brilliant touch.

I just hope she doesn't go too far.

On a positive note, any day now, Terrin and Iris will be parents and Keri and I will be grandparents!!!

The next afternoon, Keri and I went across the road to keep Iris company while Terrin, Patches, and Shereen worked on their own careers.

Iris wanted to shoot hoops, but Keri put a stop to that saying, "You're much too far along for such strenuous activity!"

I was about to suggest some table tennis when Keri added, "You need to relax, Iris. Get settled in a comfy chair with a book and I'll bring you a healthy snack."

Iris stared at Keri for a moment and said, "I guess it doesn't matter where in the world you are, a mom is always a mom! Thanks, Mom Swanson."

With Iris in Keri's tender care, I tried out the climbing wall for the first time.

It is much harder than it looks.

Especially when it disappears!

As I hung there feeling the wall beneath me, but not seeing it, I wondered if Karam was nearby playing with his magic!

While Iris was resting, Shereen came home, and Keri raved over Shereen's latest book.

"I couldn't put it down! The plot was fascinating and the characters so real! You're a brilliant author Shereen!"

Shereen smiled at the compliments and talked about what gave her inspiration.

"I have a whole bookcase full of my favorites. Books that pull you in with characters that you can relate to, and stories that stay with you long after you've read them!"

"Well, you've successfully joined the crowd of best-selling authors Shereen! The review of your latest book said you were going to be paid over §15,000 simoleans for it!"

"Isn't that amazing? I knew writing was a lucrative career, but I didn't expect to be this successful this early!"

"Well, you spent all your time in Uni writing, and it paid off!"

"Not all my time…come downstairs and I'll show you what I did when I wasn't writing!"

Downstairs, Shereen challenged Keri to a game of table tennis.

Even though Keri was just a novice at the game, she picked it up fast and returned some great shots.

With the matches over and Shereen winning 3 to 1, we heard voices upstairs.

And got up there just in time to see Iris welcoming Terrin home.

With a steamy kiss!

Keri put a finger to her lips and pulled me towards the side door to give the parents-to-be some alone time.

Though Iris's growing baby bump was proof enough of that!

Babies seem to arrive at the most inauspicious moment and Terrin and Iris's child was no exception!

We got the call in the middle of the night and found out that Terrin hadn't even had time to get Iris to the hospital!

So, all six of us raced across the street to meet the newest little Swanson.

To find Terrin wildly jamming out a song on the front porch as a much thinner Iris welcomed us in.

I peeked eagerly into the crib, staring down at the little blue bundle for the first time.

Blue, a boy!

Terrin and Iris have a son! I have a grandson!

Our first grandchild.

My heart was nearly bursting out of my chest as Iris quietly said, "He's still awake if you want to hold him. It's safe enough. He's been fed and changed."

I carefully lifted the precious bundle into my arms and stared down into his scrunched up little face.

Bright, eager eyes looked back at me and one small fist twitched above his blankets.

Iris whispered, "His name is Leif. It seemed the most fitting."

"It's perfect, Iris. He's perfect. Aren't you little Leif? I'm your grandpa. Grandpa Scott. The one that hopes to teach you how to fish. And cook, if you're interested. But that won't be for a while yet. For now, it's just feedings, snuggles, and diaper changes."

With a chuckle I added, "Lots and lots of diaper changes. But we'll let mommy and daddy take care of that part. Grandparents get to do the fun stuff!"

Iris went back out to the kitchen and received a hug from Lacey, "Congratulations! I can't believe I'm an aunt! Any time you need a sitter, give me a call."

"Are you going to have time for that with your new career? A little bird told me about an up-and-coming officer that just got a promotion!""

"I did! I'm a Traffic Cop now and can officially apprehend burglars! Oh, keep that part to yourself…Mom and Dad will just worry."

Iris nodded and said, "Your secret's safe with me. My parents are still active scientists. My mother will never stop working and my father will never stop worrying!"

Behind me, Shereen sighed and tapped her foot.

"It's time for Leif's feeding; Iris is trying to get him on a schedule."

Shereen's words were practical, but her voice sounded a bit wistful.

I gave Leif one last snuggle and said, "I'll be back, little guy. You can count on that."

We got home just in time to see another surprise visitor in the hall.

This time it was Grandma Summer's ghost, and she was sporting a big grin!

The first time she's visited us.

No doubt about it, moving their urns downstairs was the key to getting them to visit.

Grandma Brooke followed her down to the basement and tried to engage her in conversation.

But Grandma Summer just smiled.

Finally, Grandma Brooke pulled out her phone and showed Grandma Summer a cat video.

That got a reaction!

Grandma Summer's smile grew wider, and she even waved at the cat antics on the small screen.

But despite two plates of ambrosia being upstairs on the kitchen counters and one being right on the floor in the basement, she didn't go near any of them.

Well, baby steps. At least she's materialized and interacted with Grandma Brooke.

In other cat news, Elwood and Flynn are cautiously getting to know one another.

They have similar coloring, both being gray and white.

But Elwood is white on his nose, chest, and paws, while Flynn's white on his whole head, chest, and front legs, as well as one back leg.

After such a late night, Friday morning came all too soon.

It was Joran's last day of high school!

Just as the sun went down, he got a call from Loretta and eagerly met up with her.

Due to their age discrepancy, the only romantic interaction they had together was a photo.

And the height difference made even that awkward, Loretta's lips were somewhere in the vicinity of Joren's eyebrows!

So, Joran gave Loretta a graduation present and said goodbye.

With his date being cut short, Joran settled for a night with his teen friends.

It was the last chance for him to throw a slumber party!

He invited the Funke siblings, Irene, Spencer, and Carol.

Along with his cousins, Kaine, Rosemarie, and Blaire Marshall.

And Tanisha Parrot, Loretta's younger sister.

Several of them would be celebrating young adult birthdays and graduating soon, just like Joran.

They didn't have much time for partying, just ate some pizza and crashed in sleeping bags out by the veggie stand.

They all slept so soundly they didn't even notice when a zombie crept out of the ground right next to them!

Even ghostly Grandpa Nolan materializing and floating down to the basement didn't wake them up.

As I promised Grandma Brooke, I put out plates of ambrosia, but Grandpa Nolan just kept rocking.

I'm a grandfather!

Terrin and Iris have a son, Leif, the cutest little guy ever!

No, I am not biased! Well, maybe a little.

Both Grandma Summer's and Grandpa Nolan's ghosts have paid us visits, but neither of them ate my ambrosia.

Joran's finished high school and thrown a final teen slumber party.

And tomorrow is Joran's young adult birthday!

My time for running the farm is coming to a close.

Entry 225: Birthday Party and a Crisis
« Reply #290 on: June 13, 2023, 11:57:31 AM »
Our teen guests woke the next morning in a flurry of feathers.

While Joran kept right on sleeping.

By the time he woke up, his friends were long gone.

But he didn't have time to worry about it.

He had another party to get ready for!

Terrin was the first to arrive and he'd picked up some delicious chocolate gnomes!

He didn't say anything though and he looked a little shell-shocked.

Before I could ask why, the doorbell rang.

I stepped out onto the porch and was caught by Lily Lum's and Sabrina Funke's sour attitudes and expressions.

These two don't even look like they want to be at a party!

I'm not even sure they were invited.

Terrin's subdued look made a lot more sense now.

Lucky for me, a flood of guests arrived so making my excuses was pretty easy.

Joran was so eager to be a young adult, he lit the candles with only a few of us gathered behind him.

Mom, of course, me, and one of our gardeners, with a few cousins running up to join us.

But as Joran blew out the candles and cheered, the crowd grew and cheered along.

As the sparkles hit Joran, Keri quickly stepped up behind him and blew a party horn with gusto!

Shayna Bluegill joined in while her youngest brother, Dirk, clapped along with Lacey.

Terrin's face was no longer clouded but filled with pride for his baby brother as he cheered and twirled a noise maker.

I, on the other hand, had gone stony-faced, like Terrin had been before.

I'd thought I was ready for this moment, but I'm not sure any parent is ready for their children to be grown up.

Especially not your youngest, and here he was, moments from becoming a man!

And there Joran was, proudly showing off his new stature, hands on hips, and losing all his hair!

But at least his outfit was presentable enough.

Grandma Brooke cheered at that!

And Dad finally made his way through the crowd of family and friends, giving the cheering stranger standing between him and Terrin a questioning look.

As Joran grabbed the first piece of cake, Keri cheered while Grandma Brooke and Loretta blew party horns.

Seeing the way Joran's shoulders relaxed upon seeing Loretta in the crowd, I knew her attendance was important to him.

And Loretta's loud cheer and joyful face at seeing Joran all grown up was proof she cared about him too.

But my attention was caught by the two women on either side of Loretta.

My aunts, Myrabella and Mia. Who are twins!

Yet Myrabella had obviously had her elder birthday, while Mia had not!

Maybe Mia had sampled one of my plates of ambrosia?

Or maybe the same magic that had affected that climbing wall was causing havoc among the residents as well!?!

At least it hadn't affected Myrabella's twin sons, Jeremy and James Dean, who were standing behind her.

They still looked like young adults, though they're a bit older than Terrin.

And James was still wearing that same scowl under his dark brows as he had when he was younger!

Kianu Moon, Mia's oldest son, looked his age, as he was going to be an adult and father of three soon!

Aunt Catrice's oldest son, Shawn, looked like he was aging normally too.

People might think he dyes his hair, with it being green, but he's an IF like his mom.

And he got his hair color from her!

You couldn't miss her trademark green hair, not even in a crowd!

She came by it naturally, as my Aunt Catrice is my Aunt Mia's IF doll made real.

They still looked the same age too, so maybe I was making mountains out of molehills.

Looking for oddities where none existed.

People do age at different rates and Myrabella was a high-powered surgeon while Mia was an equestrian.

The stress of the medical profession could explain Aunt Myrabella's aging faster.

Right?

Fairy wings caught my eye and then my eyes focused on my parents.

Seeing them standing together looking so solemn, it struck me that their youngest grandchild had just become a young adult.

And me being a grandfather made them great-grandparents!

No wonder they were looking so thoughtful.

I better invite them over soon for another helping of ambrosia!

No sense taking any chances.

I was jolted out of my ponderings by several of the guests shouting out their thanks for a great party.

And seeing Kianu's eldest, his daughter, Krissy, waving at Grandpa Leonard made me smile.

Grandpa Leonard had always been popular with the ladies and little Krissy was no exception, even if he was her great-great grandfather!

Though seeing Lily Lum tapping her foot and frowning nearby, I hoped she wasn't going to crush the little tike with a cutting remark.

But she never got the chance as Krissy headed home with her parents, Kianu and Candice.

Joran had made a quick trip to a mirror and dresser, and he was looking more like himself.

Many of the guests had gone home, but only one mattered to Joran.

All his feelings for Loretta showed plainly on his face as their eyes met and locked.

"You're still here."

"Of course, I'm still here. I wouldn't have left without talking to you. Happy Birthday, Joran."

I was waiting to see what would happen between these two, now that they were both young adults.

But a gasp on the other side of the pavilion drew my attention.

Keri's voice stuttered in shock, "Iris! You're, you're…"

Iris wailed, "I'm pregnant again, Mom Swanson! What have I done!?!"

At Iris's words, Lacey froze with a forkful of cake half-way to her wide-open mouth.

I stood dumbstruck by the corner of the pavilion.

Terrin's shell-shocked face before the party flashed through my mind.

No wonder he'd been in such a state, Leif had just arrived and now baby #2 was on the way!

Keri did the only thing possible in such a situation.

She pulled Iris in close and hugged her for all she was worth!

"Oh, Iris! We'll get through this sweetie. All of us together! You're not in this alone!"

Lily Lum's catty voice cut through all the chatter in my head, "Well, that girl certainly knows how to make an entrance! And how to put a damper on a party!"

I couldn't control myself and said, "That girl, is DOCTOR Wainwright. Yes, Council Member Lum, THOSE Wainwrights! The ones who give generous donations to deserving public officials. She's also my daughter-in-law. The party is now officially over and you can go home, Lily!"

Prospective in-law or not, no one was going to belittle a cherished member of my family.

As Lily stomped across the lawn to her home, sputtering, "How was I supposed to know…",

Lacey said, "Way to go, Dad! I don't care if she's Lawrence's mother; it's about time someone put that…wit...woman…in her place! You go help Mom support Iris. I'll track down Terrin. I'm sure he'll need us too."

Well, the morning started off calmly enough with a great slumber party.

Then it segued into an even greater young adult birthday party for Joran.

But Iris's news and tears had the family rallying around both her and Terrin.

Another baby's not the end of the world but try telling that to a brilliant doctor putting her career on hold.

One who's experiencing the hormonal changes of a new pregnancy right after giving birth to her first child!

Keri had the right idea and just poured out love and support as Iris cried on her shoulder.

Then Keri called Susan Wainwright and filled her in on what was going on.

On what Iris was going through.

Once Iris got done speaking with her mother, her tears dried up, and she said, "I need to run some tests!"

Dr. Wainwright was back!

But there are some things that won't be stopped by anything.

Graduation at City Hall!

And Joran's was scheduled for tomorrow.

Entry 226: Graduation and Choices
« Reply #291 on: July 22, 2023, 10:49:28 AM »

After last night's drama, Sunday morning started off mildly with Grandpa Jerad and Joran working in the gardens, harvesting and re-planting.

Lacey was in the garden too, but she was playing with Elwood rather than working.

And by the look of her wet suit, she'd been playing in a sprinkler before that.

No matter what they were doing, it was nice to see the three of them spending some quiet time in the garden.

Then I spotted Grandma Rielle's ghost floating by Grandpa Jerad and I feared the worst.

But Grandpa Jerad just kept his head down and kept on weeding!

With that crisis averted, I wondered if Grandma Rielle would partake of my ambrosia.

No such luck, so I offered to make breakfast.

But a freshly showered Joran beat me to it!

I smiled proudly as he patted the breakfast calzone dough like a pro.

Then it was off to City Hall for his graduation ceremony!

Grandpa Jerad just stared in awe, his mouth wide, as he looked at Joran in his cap and gown.

I felt like doing the same, seeing my son all grown up.

It still twisted my heart a bit, but I was dealing with it.

Until the wish popped into my head that I'd like to have another child with Keri!

That gave me a shock!

But no time to really think about it as it was time to head inside.

But the thought came back full force when the ceremony was over.

Joran threw his diploma into the air yelling, "It's official, I'm a high school graduate and a man now!"

Keri clutched her stomach and, her voice full of regret, moaned, "All of my babies are grown up!"

Maybe having another child wasn't such a shocking idea, for either of us.

But Lacey came out of the ceremony looking puzzled, "You're a genius so I get the class valedictorian part, but why did your classmates vote you Most Likely To Take Over The World? You live on a farm!"

Joran shrugged and said, "Maybe because I'm a genius with a fortune?"

Lacey quipped, "More likely because there isn't an award for Biggest Nerd!"

Before the two of them could revert to more childish squabbling, Keri herded us back inside for the traditional family photo.

Somehow, though Joran was the graduate, Lacey managed to be front and center in the photo!

It was still a great photo as Dad got to join us, looking more than proud on one end, while Keri and I were beaming on the other, and Grandma Brooke and Grandpa Jerad stood together between us.

Joran lagged behind us and when he came out, he shouted, "I'm officially registered as a gardener! The 5th generation from our founders!"

Distant cousin Deena Kindle snapped a photo of the momentous moment while Dad and Grandma Brooke looked on proudly.

Tanisha Parrot, Deena's newly graduated daughter, freaked out, yelling, "Mom, what am I going to do with MY life!?!"

Deena just shook her head and said, "Tanisha, you're a vampire, you've got plenty of time to decide!"

To celebrate the day, Grandpa Jerad picked up this little cutie from the shelter.

Lacey was thrilled to have a kitten in the house again and little Maya seemed thrilled to be here.

Just look at her strutting down the hall like she already owns the place!

Sadly, Dad had told us that Mom's Kimo had met Grim during the night.

So, we stopped by and picked up one of Razzle's puppies, Kit, as a gift.

It seemed only fitting since he's Max's grand puppy, and Kimo's great-great grand puppy!

He's definitely got Razzle's coloring, but he looks small, like his father, Menelaus Fox.

I guess will find out when he grows up.

Kit will be staying with us until Mom's ready for a new pet.

Kit's taken a liking to Elwood and follows him around, well, like a puppy!

He really likes Elwood's fluffy tail and tries to capture it whenever he gets a chance.

Keri and I went over to visit and found Iris and Leif in the nursery.

Leif had already become a toddler, which was shocking enough, but Iris's words had Keri staring in concern.

"Any changes yet, Marisela?"

"His temp is slightly elevated, but he's not feverish or sweaty. And his appetite hasn't changed."

"Good, just keep monitoring him so I can keep track of his progress."

Marisela asked, "Will do, Dr. Wainwright. I'm honored to be part of such a prestigious program, especially getting to live in your house and work with you and Leif directly!"

I went stone still, like I do when I'm really upset, but Keri's eyes flew open wide, and she clenched her hands nervously.

But before either of us could ask what was going on, Iris continued, "It's great having you here at the house, Marisela! You've been such a big help, taking care of Leif, and… OH! It's taking effect! Just look at his green skin! I'll go mark the date and time on his chart."

Keri and I both stood there in shock.

If we hadn't seen it for ourselves, we would never have believed it!

Little Leif's skin had changed from honeyed brown to a deep green in a heartbeat!

It was obvious that, despite the risks, Iris had introduced PlantSim DNA into Leif's genetic make-up!

After Iris left the room, Keri took Leif in her arms, with Marisela nervously asking, "Are you sure it's okay? Dr. Wainwright…"

Keri cut Marisela off with a curt nod, saying, "Don't worry, Marisela, I'll take care of things with Iris!"

Not wanting Leif to know she was upset, Keri tickled him, saying, "Gram's going to get your tummy!"

Leif giggled and said, "More! More, tickles, Gram!"

Keri obliged as Marisela still looked on nervously.

But Keri's expression softened as Leif reacted like any other toddler, squealing and laughing.

Keri chatted with Leif for a few minutes, giving cuddles and kisses.

Then she asked, "Would you like to see Gram and Grandpa's surprise?"

Leif bounced enthusiastically in Keri's arms and gave me an expectant look that was absolutely precious.

"I'll take that as a yes!"

"There you go, Leif, all set for some outdoor playtime before nighty-night."

Leif's bright eyes dimmed, and his lower lip jutted out, "No crib!"

Keri smiled and said, "Of course not! You're a big boy now. Let's go play with your new toy while Grandpa Scott gets your big boy room set up."

Even though they were only going out to the back yard, Keri couldn't resist using the stroller.

Though it got away from her a bit on the bumpy ground.

The buckin' bronco toy was a big hit!

Keri said she enjoyed it as much as Leif did.

It took a bit, distracted as I was, but soon Leif's big boy room was all set.

And Keri's and Leif's reactions were worth it, as they oohed and aahed at the transformation.

It was basically the same, just a color change to cream walls and a leafy green border with the crib redone to match.

All we'd added was a leafy crib for Leif's expected brother or sister, a tall green bookcase, and a bright green napping mat!

Keri had barely gotten Leif into his jammies before Leif crowed excitedly and made a beeline for his new big boy sleeping space.

In moments he was sound asleep.

I swear those mats are worth their weight in simoleans!

I turned off the lights as Keri whispered, "Sweet Dreams, Leif. See you soon."

Grandma Rielle's ghost visited but she didn't eat any ambrosia.

If it hadn't taken so long for our three resurrected ghosts to partake of it, I'd be thinking our remaining three family ghosts wanted to stay ghosts!

But I won't give up! Ambrosia will be set out every time I hear ghostly music. Just in case.

Joran graduated with honors and is now a registered gardener, the 5th generation on the farm.

A choice that I am proud he made.

Grandpa Jerad chose to adopt another kitten, Maya, and we adopted little Kit, Razzle's puppy, to give to Mom since Kimo passed away, choices that put smiles on everyone's faces.

We weren't smiling about it, but Iris's choice to change Leif's genetics doesn't seem to have affected him adversely.

Keri pointed out that Leif may be our grandson, but he is Terrin and Iris's child, and they have the right to make their own choices concerning him.

And since they're both PlantSims, they'd want a natural child that carried both of their genetics.

I know all that, but it still bothers me.

Or maybe it's just that everyone making all these choices on their own is proof that my job as heir is almost complete.

Entry 227: Turning Over the Reins
« Reply #292 on: July 27, 2023, 11:01:37 AM »

That night, Grandpa Jerad unexpectedly came across ghostly Grandpa Nolan.

And this time his reaction was the typical one for him.

He hit the floor!

Grandpa Nolan just kept rocking until he returned to his urn.

He didn't even come close to eating my ambrosia!

That was disappointing, of course, but the next big event was anything but!

After lunch, I said, "Joran, it's time son!"

"Time for what, Dad? Is Iris having the baby!?!"

"Oh, no. Not that time! Time for me to hand over the farm! The last few days have shown me that everyone is perfectly capable of making their own choices without the world coming to an end. So, you are officially the head of Swanson Farms! We just need to sign the paperwork and drop it off at City Hall."

"Really, Dad!?! "You're sure about this!?! I just…I just graduated…"

"I'm sure, Joran! I'm ready to take a back seat, to focus on whatever I want…"

"Trying to get the ghosts to eat your ambrosia and join the family?"

"Always.  And maybe do some baking and making jams and jellies when those crops come in. I've never really done justice to that baking and canning kitchen in the basement, and I could do that when the weather turns too cold to garden or fish. While the weather's nice, I'd really like to catch a Perfect Deathfish. They seem to be of short supply in our pond, so I'll need to make a late-night trip to the cemetery. Your mother and I might even try to restock all those fishbowls down in the basement too. I think your grandpa would appreciate the gesture as his catches are long gone."

Excitedly Joran replied, "I forgot about Grandpa's fish! I was thinking about what I'd like to do for the farm, Dad. Restoring things so that everyone's contributions were honored. We've got Max and two cats, so all we need is a horse to complete all the pets. Loretta loves horses, so she could do the training and racing! We need to get all the gardens and orchards replanted as some of them are almost empty! And get Grandpa Nolan's and Grandma Marley's nectar gardens back up to speed, maybe start making nectar again."

I pulled him in for a hug and said, "Those are all great ideas, Joran. With ideas like that, you'll do just fine, son. But we're all here to help. In fact, to get you started, we've pooled all the produce everyone's been harvesting, and you can deliver your very first consignment to the Elixir Store."

"Thanks, Dad! I appreciate the help and the vote of confidence. I'll do my best to make you proud."

"You already have, son. You already have."

Once Joran had all the consignable produce, we jumped in his truck and headed for town.

He was comfortable enough taking over the farm, but he'd asked me to ride along and keep up the family journal.

With our founders back, and death flowers and ambrosia on hand, there's not much need to continue as we'll all be around for some time.

But there were a few things we still wanted documented.

Joran's first consignment was one of them!

He stopped just before the steps to the store, giving me the perfect opportunity for a photo.

As he headed inside, I kept my distance, letting him take the lead.

He stepped confidently up to the counter and said, "Hi, I'm Joran Swanson. I've got a large consignment of produce as I'll be the one handling all the transactions for Swanson Farms from now on."

The consignment specialist smiled sweetly and said, "Nice to meet you, Joran. I'll be sure to contact you personally when your items sell!"

Then, with a flutter of her wings, she folded her arms, levitated off the floor, and gave him a very unprofessional look!

As if the flirty glance wasn't enough, she added, "If you step behind the counter, I could give you my number. In case you have any questions…"

To my astonishment, Joran did as she asked, eagerly stepping around the counter to her side!

Then he stared straight into her eyes as hearts fluttered around them!

He shook her hand, his eyes never leaving her face, saying, "It's a pleasure to meet you."

"Oh, the pleasure's all mine," she breathed, staring deeply into his eyes.

Barbara's words came back to me in full force, "I don't trust evil fairies!"

I had no idea if this fairy was evil or not, but she'd certainly cast some kind of spell over Joran!

Maybe she was a hybrid? A witch? A genie? The levitation in the purple mist pointed more toward genie, but it could be both!

While I debated my next course of action, the register let out a shrill trill.

The consignment girl's voice turned abruptly professional as she checked her register, "You've made multiple sales already. Very generous ones, too. A check for §15,293 simoleans will be deposited into your account. Congratulations!"

Joran shouted, "Wow! That much just for produce? I'm already at level 7 in my career and I just joined yesterday!"

The consignment girl murmured a much more subdued, "Congratulations," then let out a deep sigh.

Almost seeming to come out of a trance, she asked, "What are you doing behind the counter?"

Joran seemed just as confused, "I'm not sure…"

Addressing the girl, I said, "There was a purple mist around you earlier…"

The girl looked embarrassed as she said, "Oh, the moon must not be out tonight. With my fae powers dimmed, my genie ones come out!"

Looking back at Joran she asked plaintively, "I didn't do anything…inappropriate, did I? The manager told me that if a customer complained again, I'd be fired!"

Joran just stared, apparently not having any recollection of what just happened.

I certainly wasn't going to remind either of them!

I quickly said, "Not at all, my dear. Totally professional! In fact, the sale was so big that I'm sure you'll get a generous bonus! Good day!"

She cheerily said, "Come again soon."

Under my breath I said, "Not until the moon is back, preferably full."

"What was that, Dad?"

"Nothing, Joran, nothing. Just mumbling to myself. Must be old age catching up with me. Good thing you've taken over the farm!"

While Joran and I were at the Elixir Consignment Shop, Iris went into labor!

And little Branch joined the family!

Keri booked it across the road as fast as she could, but Iris still managed to change out of maternity wear and into her regular clothes.

"Oh, Iris, another perfect little boy! And he's green! Does that mean he's already a PlantSim and won't need any treatments?"

Iris explained, "No. PlantSims have both human and PlantSim DNA in their skin tone, so there's always a chance a natural child of ours could inherit either human-toned skin, light through dark, or green PlantSim skin, in varying shades. That's been proven by all three of the test couples. Barbara Dorsey has very pale skin, like her father, but bright green hair, the color being the only thing she inherited from her PlantSim mother. While Karam Hollis has dark skin and brown hair, like his mother and is a witch like her, yet the texture of his hair is that of a PlantSim, a gift of his father. The Hollis twins, Vervain and Petunia, are both green, but different shades, and Petunia also inherited her mother's wiccan powers. The combinations are just as varied as humans and other occults, once you've received the treatments to carry a child."

Keri nodded, "That makes sense. So, you'll be giving Branch some Forbidden Fruit DNA to transform him when he becomes a toddler, just like you did with Leif?"

Iris hesitated, then nodded, "Yes. I know you and Scott are concerned about that process, but everything's worked out fine for Leif. We're tracking his progress carefully and he hasn't suffered any adverse effects. Branch is naturally green, but not a full PlantSim, and I don't want him to be the odd man out in our family!"

Keri sighed, "Like you and Terrin were growing up in your human families. Oh, Iris. You did the treatment on Leif so he wouldn't look different, wouldn't feel left out!"

Iris's voice trembled as she said, "I wasn't the only one that was different in my family. My older brother Orion is different too. Not a PlantSim, but an al…he has a skin condition that marks him as different. It was pretty tough on both of us, for different reasons, but we had each other. And our family has never treated us differently, well as much as they couldn't. But we ARE different. I didn't want that for my children!"

"Well, it's not like you can just choose to be human or a PlantSim…"

Seeing the look on Iris's face, Keri gasped, "It's actually possible to choose…so why didn't you choose to become human if you felt different?"

"Because, unlike my brother Orion, I had the choice. He didn't. I chose us being different together. But it wasn't totally an unselfish choice. Being a PlantSim made me different, but it also made me feel special, unique. And I liked the attention, being not only smart, but the pretty little PlantSim girl. Orion did not as his attention was usually negative. It was only his genius and Wainwright name that made things tolerable for him. I can just imagine what he's going through now that he has a daughter that looks just like him. With no recourse to change that for himself or her."

"But you have the knowledge that can make your children PlantSims. Make all of you related and look the same, one big happy PlantSim family. I can definitely see the appeal, Iris! So, does Branch make your family complete?"

Iris looked thoughtful and said, "I'd really like a little girl and so would Terrin…"

Keri laughed and said, "So, that's a big fat, 'No', then!"

Iris asked, "Does that make us crazy? Wanting another when we already have two so close in age?"

Keri shook her head and said, "Not as crazy as Scott wanting another one!"

Iris's eyes opened wide as she asked, "Seriously!?!"

Keri nodded and said, "What's even crazier is that I'm thinking about it!"

When I got to Terrin and Iris's house, I found Patches holding Leif.

She was still in her uniform and looked tired and frazzled.

No surprise with a new baby in the house, along with an active toddler.

But where was everyone else?

Patches explained, "Iris got Branch settled in his crib and she's resting now, so Keri went home. But Shereen had a book signing and Terrin had a gig, neither of which could be re-scheduled…"

"So, you took over toddler duties. After a double shift, I'm guessing?"

Patches grimaced, "Is it that easy to tell?"

I smiled and said, "Officer Wainwright, I'll take that little guy off your hands, and you can officially go off duty!"

"You're a lifesaver, Mr. Swanson!"

"Least I can do for one of our boys, um, ladies, in blue, err black! Besides, now that I've handed over the reins to Joran, I've got plenty of time for Grandpa duties!"

After changing Leif into his jammies, I just held him for a bit, and he snuggled in.

But when I suggested bedtime, there was the usual protest, "No, crib!"

"No crib, Leif, you've got your napping mat…"

"No."

So, I gave in and set him on the floor and tried teaching him a few words.

But he stayed silent, just shaking his head.

Patches frazzled look made even more sense.

Leif was pretty stubborn!

Leif finally spoke saying, "Trash! Play in trash!"

"You can't play in trash, Leif! Besides not being sanitary, your mother would kill me if I let you play in trash!"

I was expecting another tantrum, but Leif just frowned at me, narrowed his eyes, and said, "No fun!"

Then he crawled across the room.

And sprawled crossways across his mat, falling instantly asleep!

I was right in thinking it was bedtime, but I guess it had to be his idea.

I got Leif properly straightened up on his mat and covered him with a light blanket.

Then I heard soft gurgles behind me.

I picked up Branch and snuggled him close, just breathing in his baby smell.

He enjoyed it for a moment, but then he started fussing a bit.

"I won't tell your Mommy, if you won't, Branch," I murmured as I gave him a bottle.

Branch just grabbed the bottle in his little hands and eagerly sucked away.

Staring down at my new grandson, that pesky little wish to have another child with Keri popped back into my head!

First, disappearing climbing walls, then my twin Aunts not aging together, and now a fae/genie gone rogue, casting a spell over Joran!

The only thing normal lately is a PlantSim having a naturally green child!

Which would be normal if she'd pulled him out of the ground and hadn't actually given birth to him.

And that sounds even crazier!

Maybe it's a good thing I've turned over the reins to Joran as I'm not sure I even know what normal is anymore!

I have a PlantSim son and daughter-in-law, who have found a way to have biological children and make them true PlantSims.

I've spent a good portion of my life growing life fruit and catching death fish and making ambrosia with it.

Ambrosia that can not only keep you from aging but brings ghosts back to life.

And I've done that repeatedly.

Who am I kidding? There is nothing normal about any of this!

And I thought my retirement would be restful and relaxing, puttering around the gardens and fishing the day away at the pond, spending time with my grandkids.

But now I want another child!

I tried putting the thought out of my mind, but it keeps popping back up…

Maybe I should be questioning my own choices!

With my thoughts in such turmoil, I'll definitely need to keep up this journal.

Even if it's just for my own sanity…

Joran was right, the orchard and gardens looked much better full of trees and plants.

The only bed that wasn't full was our specialty one, currently holding Keri's three steak plants.

She was building up their quality to deliver Outstanding specimens to the local grocer.

Somehow, the fridge or family chests didn't have any steaks above Very Nice quality in them!

And the chests were also missing an Omni Plant!

An oversight that we were determined to rectify.

While I cooked up more ambrosia to stock our replicator, Joran spent some time with Maya.

Like me, Joran's not an animal lover, nor does he have a specific fondness for cats, dogs, or horses.

But Maya was too cute to resist!

Especially since she'd be leaving as soon as Flynn mastered hunting.

Which happened much sooner than we all thought it would!

Flynn hadn't been having much luck searching for prey, only finding a leaf, an empty bag, or catching a snakeskin.

But playing with the catnip toy did the trick!

Here's our amazing hunter holding his catch proudly!

I took a final photo of Kit with his favorite chew toy.

And one of Maya using the scratching post.

Then Grandpa Jerad and Grandma Brooke headed next door.

Unfortunately, even though Grandpa Jerad is a cat lover, Roxy didn't take to him.

She attacked him first thing!

Quickly putting an end to the idea of them moving in.

But when Grandma Marley saw Kit, she curtsied properly saying, "Oh, Jerad, he's adorable, what a thoughtful gift!"

Joran had gone over to help them get settled in and met Loretta, who was on the way over to the farm for a visit.

So, minus Kit, they all came back home.

Back on the farm, Lacey and Lawrence were on a date and getting along just fine.

As he stroked Lacey's cheek, he said, "Have I told you that you get more beautiful every time I see you?"

Caressing his hand with her own, Lacey sighed, "The way you look at me, the touch of your hands, speak for themselves. But I don't mind hearing the words either. Tell me more!"

"Better yet, I'll show you!"

Lawrence pulled her close and kissed her soundly!

Their private thoughts were plain to see, with Lacey's having no room for anything besides Lawrence.

And Lawrence wondering when he'd get a chance to move in!

I'm not sure if that's due to his love for Lacey or more about moving away from his mother, Lily!

I can definitely see the appeal of both.

Keri definitely approves of Lawrence.

Though I'm sure she would have preferred they'd waited for her to leave the room before making out.

Joran didn't have any reservations about asking Loretta to move in.

"I love you, Loretta, and you love me. There's no reason you need to live in that small house all on your own."

Loretta seemed a little less sure, her lower lip jutting out in contemplation.

Then she smiled and said, "If you're sure you can handle my needs!"

Joran gulped, "Needs?"

Loretta held up both her hands and said, "I either need plasma fruit or to hunt."

Joran seemed a little nonplussed but managed to ask, "No other options?"

Loretta stepped closer and cupped his cheek with her hand.

She whispered, "Well, I don't need to hunt if I have a volunteer…"

Joran seemed even more mesmerized by Loretta than he had with that fae/genie!

But he managed a small nod.

With permission given, Loretta dipped her head to his neck and drank!

When she'd had her fill, she stepped back, licked her lips, and swiped her hand across her mouth, catching every drop.

Joran almost sank to his knees but managed to stay on his feet.

Loretta murmured, "Sorry love, it's a bit draining, but if it's any consolation, you taste delicious! I'll definitely move in with you!"

With her needs met and her nighttime energy kicking in, Loretta started working on her LTW, Martial Arts Master.

Which required reaching Martial Arts level 10 and becoming a Grand Master.

It seemed like quite an ambitious wish!

But she quickly earned her yellow belt.

Then her orange.

And even her green!

Wow! Vampiric nighttime energy sure isn't a myth!

But it wasn't all work and no play for Loretta.

Showered and changed, she checked on Joran, "You doing okay, love? The first time is usually the worst."

Joran's puppy dog look was all the answer she needed, but he confirmed it saying, "I'm more in love with you than ever."

And he pulled her into his arms and kissed her passionately!

Not to be outdone by my children, I found Keri and did a little romancing of my own.

"So, what do you say, beautiful? You, me, baby number three?"

Keri took my hand, giggled, and said, "I'm still thinking about it…"

We've got Grandma Brooke and Grandpa Jerad with us for a bit longer as their move next door didn't work out.

Lacey and Lawrence are dating every free moment and Lawrence spends more time here than he does at home.

And now that Joran's seen the lucrative results of gardening, he's been working diligently on the farm to restore it to its full glory.

He even invited Loretta to move in.

After Loretta officially claimed Joran as her own, in the vampire way, she accepted.

That was a little unsettling but left Joran unharmed and more in love with her than ever.

Loretta has started working on her martial arts skill to help complete her LTW and with her vampiric energy, she's made it to Green Belt super-fast.

As for me?

I'm still persuading Keri to have another child!

Crazy, maybe, but trying sure is fun!

Entry 229: Grandsons and Ghosts
« Reply #294 on: August 09, 2023, 11:50:29 AM »

The next evening, we got an invitation to a party across the road.

I was surprised to find out that my cooking skills weren't required as Kamaya already had a bowl of mac and cheese in hand.

And Marisela was making some autumn salad at the counter.

With no cooking duty to attend to, I headed for the nursery.

Though I did catch Keri giving Iris a searching look, but Iris just smiled and said, "Not yet."

A peek inside the nursery had me finding Branch napping in his crib with Leif playing quietly with the dollhouse nearby.

Not wanting to wake Branch, I returned to the party.

Keri was saying, "Getting permission to count your PlantSim Reproduction Program research as working from home was brilliant, Iris! I heard you earned another promotion!"

Iris beamed, "Gene Therapist is my official title! And it falls perfectly in-line with my research! But I can't take all the credit, it was my mom's idea. She knows just how important staying on top of your career is and once she showed all my documentation to the hospital and research center, they agreed that it was a worthwhile project, and I deserved the position."

Kamaya shot Keri a pointed look, and quipped, "I'm sure the Wainwright name and fortune had nothing to do with it!"

Iris laughed and said, "I've never been afraid to use either! I hear you've been seen out at that old 'Abandoned Warehouse' pretty frequently."

Kamaya looked around and, not spotting Patches or Lacey, hissed, "I'd rather not have that mentioned in the vicinity of law enforcement, so keep it on the down low, please."

Iris raised her eyebrows and said, "Who do you think told me!?!"

I'd never even thought about Kamaya's less than lawful activities in regard to Patches and Lacey being in Law Enforcement but was spared the awkwardness when a cry from the nursery told us Branch was awake.

Keri was just as eager for some Grammie time and beat me to the crib!

Snatching up Branch and promptly blowing raspberries on his tummy.

Then she gave him a bottle without even consulting Iris or Marisela.

She didn't look at his chart to check his last feeding either.

I know I've been pretty lax in that department, but Keri had just praised Iris's research program, and yet here she was totally disregarding Branch's feeding schedule.

When I asked, Keri said, "Grammie knows when her little guy is hungry. One bottle to fill up his tummy shouldn't affect Iris's research, but I'll note it on his chart if it will make you feel better, Scott."

I laughed and said, "No need on my account, Keri. I don't even bother writing it down! It's just a secret between me and my grandsons. And now you!"

Keri shook her head and said, "Not much of a secret! If you check Branch's chart, there's a few spots that notate 'unscheduled feeding--Grandpa visiting', so Iris is on to you Scott!"

With his tummy full, Keri put Branch to her shoulder, patting his back until he burped.

Then she snuggled him some more, happy and content to have a baby in her arms.

My heart almost burst seeing her holding a child, but I didn't press her.

I focused on teaching Leif a few words.

He was in a much better mood after his playtime and quickly repeated, "Carrots and peas!"

"That's right little guy, Grandpa Scott grows veggies and cooks them up perfectly. I can teach you when you're a little bigger. The cooking part anyway. Growing vegetables will have to wait a bit longer."

"Grandpa Scott cook for ghosts?"

"I do cook for ghosts. A dish called ambrosia! That one takes vegetables and fish. I can't wait to take you fishing after your next birthday.

After Leif's success, I let him have some play time.

Watching him scoot across the floor to the toy box, leaving a trail of flowers and leaves, reminded me so much of Terrin at that age I couldn't help feeling a surge of nostalgia.

Leif had taken to being a PlantSim as if he'd actually been born one and seemed just fine, suffering no adverse effects.

And knowing Iris's reasoning behind the treatments, as well as it being an approved research project, helped me to adjust to it as well.

Once Leif had picked out a plushy toy, I left him to it.

Quickly turning my attention to Branch.

"I'll teach you to cook and fish too, little man. But for now, it's play time and cuddles!"

I was hoping that spending all this time with my grandsons would alleviate my desire for another child.

But it only seemed to intensify the longing.

When I finally returned to the party, everyone was saying their goodbyes and heading home.

Several stretches and yawns gave evidence that it was getting late and time to get some sleep.

Terrin was still revved up after another one of his gigs and was playing on his laptop, only mumbling a distracted, "Goodbye all, thanks for coming."

We got home to find Joran and Loretta on the back porch, cuddled together and watching the stars.

Despite the roof overhead! Ah, young love.

Keri didn't hesitate to interrupt, laughing and saying, "Caught in the act! I'll let you get back to it, but I have something for Joran."

"I've got one more graduation present for you!"

"The farm was enough, Mom!"

"This isn't anything big like that, but I think you'll like it."

Shaking the box, Joran inquired, "What is it?"

"That logic book you've been wanting to buy but never seem to get the chance to."

"Thanks, Mom, that'll be great when Loretta's busy with her martial arts and can't play chess!"

Early the next morning, I woke just in time to see Grandma Rielle's ghost heading for my latest offering of ambrosia!

She picked it up and floated towards the kitchen table.

But instead of setting it on the table to eat it, she put it on the floor and vanished!

It might have been my imagination but, just before she disappeared, I could have sworn she said, "Almost made it…"

At least it wasn't a dream this time!

I wasn't sure what Grandma Rielle's words meant, but maybe something was wrong with that batch of ambrosia.

It wouldn't hurt to make a fresh plate!

Not that it lasted long.

Lacey ate it before her date with Lawrence that evening!

I guess the few days she was older than him really bugged her.

Oh, well, it's not like I couldn't make ambrosia in my sleep after making so many dishes of it.

But who's that toddler sitting at her feet?

Turns out that it's little Jolene Martingale!

Grumpy Cruz Martingale's daughter with my evil cousin Shayna Bluegill!

It's no wonder their relationship didn't last with their temperaments.

I'm not even sure Cruz got to meet her before he met Grim.

Such a shame, with her being his only child.

When Lacey got home, she found ghostly Summer in the kitchen right next to the ambrosia on the counter!

But she just floated right on by.

And settled down in a rocker in the nursery.

Founder Brooke couldn't stand it any longer and asked, "Summer, why won't any of you eat Scott's ambrosia? Don't you want to come back and be with family?"

Summer stared at her mother so long I was afraid she wouldn't answer, but then she spoke!

"We do, Mom! At first, Nolan and I weren't strong enough and now there's not enough room for both of us. So, as soon as there's space in the house, we will!"

With this knowledge, Grandma Brooke knew she had to look for a new place for her, Grandpa Jerad, and Maya, as soon as possible!

Then a thought occurred to her, "Rielle tried to eat some just this morning and she said something odd…"

"Her situation's different, Mom. She has history with Grim and he's being difficult. She's trying as hard as she can, but Grim's never forgiven her for slapping him after he took Flynn two days after he took Kobe, so he monitors her more than most. Her attempt earlier was the closest she's ever come, but she won't give up."

Spending time with our grandsons has been a joy, much like getting to know our founders.

Ghostly Summer's news made it plain that she and Nolan can't return until there's space in the house.

But the news about ghostly Rielle and Grim was a bit more ominous and explained Rielle's comment when she tried to eat my ambrosia.

There was nothing wrong with that batch of ambrosia, it was all Grim's doing!

Grim hasn't let go of that grudge he had with Rielle, in fact, it's grown stronger, and he's determined to keep her in the Netherworld!

I'll need to make sure there's always a plate of ambrosia ready so Grandma Rielle can escape!

Entry 230: Family Moments
« Reply #295 on: October 17, 2023, 08:43:29 PM »

Later that morning, Lacey headed off to work.

Stopping for just moment to pose in front of her new police cruiser to let me get a photo.

She looked so professional in her uniform it brought a lump to my throat.

But our maid only had eyes for Keri!

"Hey, buddy, quit staring at my wife or I'll have my daughter arrest you!"

Keri laughed, but Lacey just said, "Dad! You can't use my position that way!"

"What? You'd protect a stranger but not your own mother?"

Lacey rolled her eyes in disgust saying, "Of course I would protect, Mom. If she was really in danger. The most our maid can do is play a prank on her!"

"But he's a vampire too! He could do some damage that way…"

"Not out here in the blazing sun! He was just asking Mom if she wanted to read the newspaper before he threw it in the compost."

"Oh. My mistake. You'd better get to work before you're late!"

In the afternoon, I was out in our berry patch with one of our gardeners.

While he weeded, I collected some juicy berries.

They'd be perfect for making jams and preserves or even a fresh strawberry pie.

By nightfall, I was back to wooing Keri, pulling her into my arms in a dip kiss.

Unfortunately, we were caught in the act by both Lacey and Joran!

Joran just did an about face and walked back into the house, embarrassed to have seen us.

But Lacey smirked and said, "Hey, you two, I'm the one on a date, Lawrence will be here any moment!"

But Lawrence ended up having to stay late at City Hall to count ballots, so Lacey worked on her own career.

She'd gotten an opportunity to gain work performance if she learned martial arts.

She took her stance before the training dummy, legs apart, hands up in combative defense.

She looked pretty good to me.

And before I knew it, she'd gained her first belt!

Showing off with a low sweep of her legs and swipe of her arm.

Then Lawrence showed up and Lacey was outside in a shot.

By the time I got outside, the two of them were already cuddled up on the lawn.

Lacey hadn't even bothered to change out of her white uniform.

Hearing voices on the other side of the house, I strode over and found Joran and Loretta under the wedding arch!

And Joran was asking Loretta a question!

"Stop, stop! Your mother will be highly disappointed if you have a private wedding!"

Joran cried out, "Dad! We came out here for privacy! I was just asking Loretta if she needed anymore sustenance!"

Loretta smiled, and said, "No need for privacy Joran. It's too soon for me to feed off you again. I'll just go grab a plasma juice."

I was intrigued by this and asked, "Would you mind if I got a photo for our family journal?"

Joran's outraged, "Dad!" occurred slightly before Loretta's nonchalant, "Not a problem."

Which is how I found myself in our kitchen watching Loretta drink plasma juice.

She closed her eyes in appreciation for the sustenance, but if I hadn't known what it was, I wouldn't have thought the process was any different than a human sim drinking juice.

Somehow, I'd thought it would be more exciting.

Oh, well, the two plates of ambrosia on the kitchen counters deserved a memorial.

Later that evening, Grandma Brooke, Grandpa Jerad, and little Maya, all moved to their new home.

It was a cute 2-bedroom place with a large bay window and a detached garage, connected by a walkway covered by a pergola.

Plenty of space for the two of them and one small kitten.

After helping them settle in, I headed back home.

To find that ghostly Grandpa Nolan hadn't wasted a moment and was already eating one of the plates of ambrosia!

When he finished, he stood up, floated a few inches off the floor, and a prism of colors flowed over his ghostly body.

Then it burst into a radiant blast of white surrounded by a myriad of colors!

I could just barely make out Grandpa Nolan hovering inside the blast.

When the lights faded, Grandpa Nolan stood before me, back in his own sim flesh.

He raised his arms in triumph, saying, "I'm back!"

But spotting his puny arms, he added, "Time to get myself back in shape! No way to work out in the Netherworld and I could never quite get the hang of using the treadmill as a ghost, like Rielle does."

I'd never noticed a ghost using the treadmill before, but my focus was on them eating ambrosia, not exercising.

I would have liked to give him a welcoming hug, but since he'd not materialized often, I didn't know him well enough.

So, I settled for a hearty, "Welcome back, Grandpa Nolan! I'm glad to see you finally made it. You had us worried before we moved your urns downstairs."

"Summer and I were pretty content in the Netherworld, Scott. But I must say it's good to be back. Thank you for all the hard work with the ambrosia."

"Honestly, it was my pleasure. I love to fish and cook, and having you all come back to us, well, it's the best reward of all! Does that empty second plate mean I missed Summer's return?"

Nolan glanced at the table and said, "No, Joran ate that one!"

First Lacey eats my ambrosia and now Joran.

Enough was enough!

I headed upstairs to find my children and remind them who the ambrosia was for.

But I was only half-way up the stairs when I discovered Lawrence and Lacey in an intimate embrace.

With Lawrence in a pair of pajamas, and Lacey in what could only be described as skimpy underwear!

All thoughts of who ate my ambrosia fled as my cheeks burned with embarrassment.

Seeing Lacey kissing Lawrence was one thing, but not with both of them in sleepwear!

I crept back down the stairs as quietly as I could, hoping I hadn't been noticed.

Thankfully, Lawrence and Lacey only had eyes for each other.

I fled outside to cool my reddened cheeks off and almost ran into a horse.

One ridden by my Aunt Mia.

"Hi, Scott. I was out for an early morning ride and thought I'd stop by. Are you okay? You look a bit flushed…"

"Fine. But enough about me, I see you still haven't had your birthday…"

"No. But, unlike you, I'm perfectly fine with it! I still enjoy riding and racing and it's easier done at a younger age."

Before I could respond, Keri yelled from the front porch, "Scott, we need to go over and see Iris right now!"

As I raced off, I yelled over one shoulder, "Bye, Aunt Mia, enjoy your ride!"

When I got inside, it was immediately obvious what all the fuss was about.

Iris was expecting again!

This time, with it being planned, Iris was beaming as Keri talked to her tummy, "…and we'll play with blocks as soon as you're big enough!"

Then Keri listened, her ear against Iris's tummy, a big smile on her face at the idea of being a grandmother again.

As Keri and Iris talked about the new baby, I cooked up a meal, anticipating Iris's appetite.

Keri couldn't keep the excitement out of her voice as she asked, "Do you think we'll be buying a teddy bear for a granddaughter this time?"

Iris said, "I know I'm a scientist, but fingers crossed! Terrin and I want to be surprised so we haven't done any tests for the baby's gender."

"So, if it's another boy, will you try again?"

Iris hesitated and said, "Maybe. My parents ended up with four children, but it was many years between my sister and oldest brother. So when Orion and I came along, it made it two of each. But with Blair being so much older, I never grew up with a sister in the house. I missed that sometimes, but other times I wonder if I would have been jealous not being the only girl at home."

"You weren't the only girl! I was there too."

Iris joined Patches near the bar, "But no one else could see you, so there was no need to be jealous of you! It was like having a best friend and a sister without giving up any of the attention. Truly the best of both worlds."

"So have you been jealous of me since I became real?"

"Never. You've always been there for me whenever I needed you, and I hope I've done the same for you. Though with all the help you've given us with the boys, I'd say my side of that tally is coming up short.  Especially with another one on the way!"

Iris gave Patches a thoughtful look, "I noticed that the phone calls from Rashad have gotten less and less since we graduated, have you two broken up?"

Patches went still and then said, "He's still in school and I've been focusing on my career, which doesn't really give me much free time."

"Because when you're not on duty, you're helping us take care of the boys…Oh, Patches, I hadn't even thought about you needing personal time. I'm afraid I'm not a very good friend. I've always been too self-centered! One of my worst faults. Don't let me do that to you anymore. If you want to spend time with Rashad, invite him over…"

"Not Rashad, but there is someone I've been spending some time with and would like to know better, when we're not at work…"

"You like someone you work with!?! Who? Your partner?"

"My partner? No! That would be inappropriate. He's actually Lacey's partner. In fact, he's her cousin, Leo Moon."

"Leo Moon!!!"

"Please keep your voice down, Iris. I'd rather keep this between us. At least, until Leo and I figure out if there is an 'us'."

As Keri and I headed for the nursery, we shared a look and a smile at the thought of Patches possibly becoming part of our family too.

Leif almost jumped into Keri's arms when she bent down to pick him up.

His delighted cries of "Gram! Gram!" showed just how happy he was to see her.

Keri chatted with Leif and then asked, "How about a ride on your pony?"

Leif squealed, "Yes, ride pony, ride pony!"

Just as we were heading out the door, my phone rang.

"Hey, Dad, what's up?"

I shot Keri a look and said, "Oh, you want me to come over and see how Kit is settling in?"

I was just about to tell him that we were visiting with Leif when Keri motioned for me to go, that she could take care of Leif.

So, I said, "Sure, Dad, I'll be right over."

One look at Kit was enough to know that he loved being with mom and dad.

But was the feeling mutual?

"It's plain to see Kit likes being here, but how is it working out for you, Mom?"

"Oh, Scott, you know I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Kimo, but to see Kit running around, and knowing he's his great grand puppy why, it just brings tears to my eyes. Happy tears!"

Grandpa Leonard chimed in with, "He's a great little pup, Scott! Just follows us all around, sniffing, and making happy snuffling noises. I think he's going to be a great hunter one day!"

Well, the verdict was in, and it looked like the match was a good one.

I'm still working in the garden and romancing Keri.

I also got an eyeful of a little too much romance where Lacey and Lawrence were concerned.

And we've had a few more family changes with our founders moving out and Grandpa Nolan back with us.

Terrin and Iris are expecting baby number three.

Patches is hoping to get to know her co-worker Leo Moon better.

And Kit and Mom are already the best of friends.

Things seem to be back on track…

Hopefully, I won't regret writing, or even thinking, that!

Grandpa Nolan braved the outdoors to register as a Nectar-Maker.

Then he stopped at the Elixir store to sell some of his nectar.

Seeing a new consignment specialist, I guess the fae/genie misbehaved again and lost her job.

Grandpa Nolan explained that he had nectar to sell that had been aging down in the basement since it was made decades ago.

"So, it's been aging the whole time you were a ghost and now that you're back you want to sell it? Nectar of this quality should sell fast, and it should fetch some sizable simoleans! We'll deposit the funds directly into your account as soon as the nectar is purchased, sir."

With the consignment concluded without any flirting or suggestive looks, I drew a relieved breath.

Now it will be safe to send Joran back with our next harvest.

We got home just in time to see ghostly Grandma Summer pop out of her urn.

She waved hello, heading straight for the kitchen.

Never hesitating as she grabbed the plate of ambrosia I'd set out before we left.

She ate every bite and, after she stood up, the transformation began.

Grandpa Nolan was already waving a greeting in anticipation of their reunion.

The ambrosia worked its magic, engulfing her in a colorful, sparkling, mist.

Not wanting to miss her initial reaction, I quickly moved to the other side of the room.

Seeing her soft smile as she patted her face and hair, brought a smile to my own lips.

It would never get old seeing loved ones return.

Especially hearing those classic first words, "I'm back. I'm really back!"

Grandpa Nolan couldn't speak, just reached out a tentative hand in welcome.

And though I would have loved to stay and watch, I felt they deserved a bit of privacy for their reunion.

Though I couldn't resist a peek back.

Seeing the loving way they embraced, his arms around her waist, her hands tenderly cradling his head, there was no mistaking their love, one that endured all these years.

Just as there was no way to mistake Lawrence's strut as he sauntered into the house!

No need to ask what he and Lacey had been up to in the tree house!

Knowing your kids are old enough to engage in adult activities is one thing.

Actually, seeing their partner looking so proud of himself after the act is quite another!

I would have given away a Perfect Deathfish, a thousand of them, to have missed this moment.

Fresh air! I needed fresh air!

I rushed past Lawrence without a word, my jaw tightening in the effort not to speak, not to interfere.

Just needing to get outside…

Only to find Joran whispering suggestively in Loretta's ear as they cuddled together on the front porch!

I flew down the front steps, and raced across the lawn, seeking refuge.

Any place where my children weren't engaged in romance!

The nectary basement! That should be safe.

Halfway down the steps I heard heavy breathing and almost raced back up.

But it was only Grandma Rielle running on the treadmill like the reaper himself was after her!

As my own breathing returned to normal, and I could actually process thought, I realized Grim probably was!

The next morning, after a restless night, and no wonder with all that happened, I found our newly resurrected ghosts, along with Loretta, working out to the stereo.

Grandpa Nolan was bearing his usual severe look and Loretta was totally focused.

Grandma Summer gave me a nod and a cheery, "Good morning, Scott, care to join us?"

Just as I thought that might not be a bad idea, my phone rang.

I shouted to Keri, and we raced out the door and across the road!

Inside, we found Terrin holding Branch, who was now a toddler.

But Terrin had even bigger news as he proudly said, "Check the nursery!"

Moments later, I was holding my new granddaughter, Daisy!

"Look at you! Just as green as your parents and your brothers, aren't you now?"

Daisy cooed and gurgled in response, patting my hand with her tiny one.

The touch of her tiny hand against my own made my heart swell with love.

I held her up and looked straight into her bright eyes, "Welcome to the family, Daisy, I'm your Grandpa Scott."

I relinquished her reluctantly, but my heart swelled even more when I saw her in Keri's arms.

The wish to have another child with Keri grew even stronger and I couldn't help but say, "You look so beautiful holding a baby, Keri. Motherhood has always come so naturally to you. Are you still thinking about it?"

Keri didn't take her eyes off Daisy as she replied, "Every moment. Now more than ever!"

Holding Daisy close, Keri whispered, "How would you feel having an aunt or uncle younger than you, little one?"

Daisy didn't reply just snuggled closer against her grandmother.

But Keri's face went soft with love and my hopes grew.

I didn't push Keri anymore but turned my attention to Branch.

"And the claw rises, rises, rises…"

Branch gasped and his eyes grew large in anticipation, alright, maybe a little fear.

So, I quickly swooped my hand down and his laughter filled the nursery as the claw tickled him silly!

After tickle time, we settled down to something more serious.

Teaching Branch to talk.

"Fishing is a great hobby. One of my favorites! I'll take you and Leif fishing as soon as you're both old enough."

Branch just stared past me, his lower lip trembling a bit.

Leif didn't comment either, content to play with his peg box.

When we got back to the house, Grandma Summer was in swimwear and holding Elwood.

"I see you're settling in and taking advantage of the warm weather, Grandma Summer."

"Oh, yes! I've always loved playing in the sprinklers. It was one of the fun perks of being a gardener."

"But you're happy to be back?"

"Nolan and I were content in the Netherworld and being on the second floor seemed to create a bit of a barrier against materializing, for some odd reason."

She snuggled Elwood closer and said, "But I really missed my favorite furry friends. This one reminds me a bit of my Flynn."

"Elwood and Flynn were getting to know one another before he moved out with Grandma Brooke, Grandpa Jerad, and Maya, Grandpa Jerad's new kitten."

"And Kobe?"

"With Grandpa Leonard over at Mom and Dad's next door. Just waiting for you and Grandpa Nolan to come back and pick a place of your own and join you."

In the kitchen, Grandpa Nolan was drinking a glass of nectar.

"Ah, the taste of perfect nectar is sublime on the tongue. It always brings a smile to my face."

Yikes! If that was Grandpa Nolan's smiling face, I don't think I ever want to see him upset!

"Mom felt the same way. But the rest of us think all nectar tastes the same."

"So was Joran planning on getting rid of the nectary?"

"No. He wants to restore it and continue making Swanson Farms Nectar, especially now that he's seen how lucrative it can be. You made a bundle on your very first consignment."

"That's because it had aged. Fresh nectar, even if it's an amazing quality, doesn't sell for as much. And it takes a lot of skill before a new nectar maker can even make a drinkable variety. But I've made enough nectar for one lifetime. I'll leave it to the young, Joran and his children, and so on. With your ambrosia, they'll be able to stay young for as long as they want."

I sensed a touch of regret in his voice and said, "You know, I'm not the only one that makes restorative items. Keri makes   a potion, Young Again potion, though none of us have ever tried it."

Grandpa Nolan's mouth curled slightly at the corners, "Now that sounds like something I might be interested in. Let me discuss it with Summer and I'll let you know."

The next time I saw Lawrence and Lacey together, they were outside in the back yard.

Thankfully, Lawrence was dressed more appropriately, and Lacey was in her swimsuit.

Judging by the look on Lacey's face, the discussion was serious.

Lawrence said earnestly, "It's up to you, Lace, but I can't stand living at home with my mother for one more minute! There's no room for me to move in here and some friends have invited me to live with them and there's room for both of us. So, just think about it, okay?"

Lacey gave me a quick look and said, "Okay, I'll think about it."

I walked into the kitchen, my mind reeling with the thought that Lacey might be leaving us soon.

But the guilty look on Joran's face had me asking, "Please don't tell me you're thinking of leaving and giving up the farm!"

"Give up the farm!?! No way!" He quickly glanced through the archways and added, "I want to surprise Loretta with fresh plasma fruit so I've been researching it. It sounds easy enough, but you can't plant it until your gardening skill is at level seven, and I'm only level six."

Relieved, I grinned at him and said, "There's plenty of space down in the nectary, find a spot and build up your skill!"

Joran quickly took my advice and started planting various items in two neat rows.

With the pace he was setting himself, he'd be at level seven in no time!

Grandma Summer has joined the family, reunited with Grandpa Nolan and bonding with Elwood.

Grandma Rielle managed to escape the Netherworld, but only for a quick run on the treadmill.

Keri and I have a new granddaughter, Terrin and Iris's sweet daughter, Daisy.

Lacey and Lawrence have taken their relationship to the next level and now Lawrence wants Lacey to move out!

Thankfully, Joran's still totally invested in the farm.

Things are still on track but if there's one thing I've learned about life is that it's always changing.

Entry 232: Changes and More Changes
« Reply #297 on: October 29, 2023, 12:48:16 AM »

Iris invited us over to visit saying she had some big news.

When we arrived, she was holding Branch who had a head full of curly green hair!

Keri gushed, "Oh, he's absolutely adorable Iris! His hair is just like Scott's when he was that age!
Green instead of black, but just as curly. And are those blonde streaks?"

Iris grinned and said, "Blonde streaks and blonde eyebrows, but they may darken as he ages, just like a human child. As for the curls, he does have some of Scott's genetics, through Terrin."

A close-up proved to be just as cute, and we could definitely see a family resemblance.

It looked like Iris's genetics program was going well, with neither of the boys experiencing any adverse side-affects.

But Branch's hair wasn't the only surprise.

Iris said, "Turn around!"

So, we did.

To find Leif had grown into a child!

Iris explained, "Joy's helping us out by doing some errands and Leif tagged along. Their return was perfect timing!"

Iris had barely stopped speaking when Leif begged, "Can we go fishing now, Grandpa Scott!?! You promised we could after my next birthday and I'm big now!"

"So you are, just let me go say hi to your little sister and we can head up to Cinnamon Falls!"

I couldn't resist giving Daisy a cuddle and blowing raspberries on her tummy!

Her coos and giggles made my day.

While I was with Daisy, Keri was chatting with Terrin, "You know how your father is about fishing, Terrin. And he did promise Leif when he was little, Branch too. You didn't have anything else planned with Leif today, did you?"

"No plans. In fact, a few hours fishing up at the Falls with Leif and Dad sounds great. Just the thing I need to unwind after a busy day."

"Great! You can have a big boys' day out while I get in some grammie time with Daisy and Branch."

As Terrin, Leif, and I, headed out the door, Keri kept Branch in giggles with some tickle time.

"You couldn't have asked for a more perfect time of day for fishing, Leif! The sun's lower in the sky, so the day's cooling off, and the fish should be hungry!"

"Wow, Grandpa Scott, you sure know a lot about fishing!"

"I should, I've been fishing since I was your age and whenever it was too cold to fish, I read books about it."

"How do books help you fish?"

"They teach you what bait different fish prefer, their habitats, if they prefer fresh water or salt water. Information like that really helps you to catch specific types of fish, especially the rarer ones, like Robot or Vampire fish, and even the elusive Deathfish!"

"Deathfish! I want to catch one of those! They sound cool! Are they worth anything or do they just have a cool name?"

"They are definitely unique, and they do sell for quite a lot of simoleans. Though I keep them for my ambrosia. And they're not easy to catch, as they prefer Angelfish, which prefer Alley Catfish, which like cheese, and they all require a high fishing skill level, so you may have to set your sights a bit lower."

 Leif frowned, "How low?"

"Everyone starts off catching minnows and goldfish and works their way up."

"Everyone or just kids?"

"It depends on when you start fishing. If you start as a kid, then you have an advantage over those that start later."

"Then what are we waiting for Grandpa Scott!?! Let's get fishing!"

When we returned home, Leif was excited and exhausted, though he tried to hide just how tired he was, eagerly chatting away about our fishing trip.

"I caught 3 minnows and got to level 1 and then I caught 3 goldfish! Grandpa says I'm a natural, even though I'm not an angler, well, not yet anyway."

Shereen tried to show some enthusiasm, but looked so solemn Leif asked, "What's wrong Auntie? Don't you like fishing?"

Shereen said, "It's not that, Leif. I have some news."

"Bad news?"

"No, it's good news, it just means that things are going to change. Jordan asked me to marry him, so this is my last night living here. I'll be moving out tomorrow."

"Oh. Well, could you read me a bedtime story since it's your last night here? You do the voices best!"

"I'd love to, sweetie. Go get ready for bed and I'll be right in."

Leif was right, Shereen did do the voices well, every character was given a definite personality.

If she wrote like she read, it was easy to see why she was a best-selling author.

I was just as caught up in the story as Leif was, just as eager to find out what happened next!

Shereen even timed it so that when she said, "and they lived happily ever after," Leif's eyes shut and he sleepily said, "Night, Auntie," as he drifted off to sleep.

Then Shereen bent down and kissed him gently on his brow whispering, "Sweet dreams, Leif. I'm going to miss you buddy. You, Branch, and Daisy."

As Shereen stood, I said, "You're a natural at this, just like Keri. So good with kids."

Shereen gave me a tender smile, her eyes shining as she said, "I hope so. Jordan and I are going to be parents soon!"

"Congratulations! Is Jordan someone you met at SimsU?"

Shereen shook her head and smiled, "No. He's lived in Appaloosa Plains all his life. I'm marrying Jordan Dean!"

"Well, welcome to the family Shereen! I heard about Patches and Leo Moon, but you and Jordan are a pleasant surprise."

"Patches and Leo are a couple!?!"

"Oh, please don't repeat that! It was supposed to be a secret. I don't even know if they're officially a couple, only that she likes him…I'm making this worse…Keri will kill me…"

"Don't worry, Mr. Swanson. I'm an author, we're good at keeping secrets."

Before I left for home, I peeked into the nursery and found Branch already asleep on his napping mat.

And Terrin cuddling Daisy as he softly sang her a nursery rhyme.

Daisy, Daisy, you drive me crazy,
Your bright eyes, your baby cries,
Your gurgles and coos, everything you do,
Makes me love you!
You're daddy's girl, daddy's world,
So small and sweet, such a treat,
Oh Daisy, Daisy, you drive me crazy.

Not wanting to interrupt such a special bonding moment, I softly closed the door and headed home.

But Terrin and Daisy weren't the only family bonding.

Grandma Summer had adopted a new kitten, Kim!

"Isn't she sweet, Scott?"

"She is, but…"

"I know, it takes up the last spot in the house, the one we were keeping open for Rielle. Which is why Nolan and I are moving out and in with Mom and Dad, until we can find our own place. With three of us leaving, it also leaves room for Lacey's young man to move in, so she can stay on the farm for a bit longer."

"Are you sure?"

"Quite. I want to spend some time with Mom and Dad, and Flynn. And pick up Kobe from next door. It's been way too long since we've all been together and not ghosts!"

Grandma Summer didn't waste a moment, she quickly packed their clothes, picked up Kim, and they were off.

Their timing was perfect as Flynn was on the front porch to greet them.

And little Kim was already checking out her new home.

Lacey had helped with the move, which gave her the opportunity to get to know Grandma Summer better.

I left them bonding over their shared love of cats because Keri and I had a party to attend.

The party was at the Lum house and, with no food in sight, I volunteered to whip up a batch of spaghetti.

Theodore, who'd recently had his elder birthday, immediately took me up on my offer, so I got to work.

Grandma Brooke was adding to the ambiance by playing her guitar, a new hobby she'd taken up.

She didn't sound half-bad, and I tapped my toes to the music as I stirred the simmering sauce.

Keri was focused on a game of chess with the Lum's younger son, Thomas.

As she pondered her next move she said, "Isn't Lawrence coming to the party?"

Thomas groaned and replied, "No. He decided to take his friends up on their offer to share their house. Mom was so mad she stomped out of the house even though we were expecting guests."

Just then the front door slammed, and Keri and I decided it was probably best if we left.

But just as Keri got to the front door, Lily shouted, "You! This is all YOUR fault! That big lot and farmhouse, all those simoleans! You've given Lawrence high hopes, and then didn't follow through! That daughter of yours, leading him on but never committing to anything! High and mighty Swansons, looking down their noses at everyone else! And now he's gone and moved in with some floozy, another relative of yours! Once I talk some sense into him, we will never have anything to do with your family ever again!"

Keri didn't even have a chance to respond to Lily's ridiculous accusations as Lily added, "Get out of MY house, the both of you!"

When we reached the farm, raised voices in the backyard had us hurrying out to see what was going on.

We couldn't actually see all that much, but sight wasn't necessary as Lacey shouted, "You've got some nerve, Joy! Coming over here at this time of night. What do you want?"

Joy's voice was full of satisfaction as she crowed, "I've already got what I wanted! Lawrence moved in with me a few hours ago!"

Keri was so shocked she exclaimed, "So, you're the floozy Lily mentioned!?!"

Joy didn't even bat an eye at the unflattering description, just purred, "Whatever works! But don't think you're going to ruin this for me, Lacey. I've already invited someone else to move in, so no more room for little ole you! Lawrence thinks we're 'just friends' but it won't be long before I change his mind."

Lacey had all she could take and said, "We'll see about that! Lawrence loves me and I'm not going to give him up to someone like you! You're just jealous and only doing this out of spite!"

Before things got even more out of hand, I said firmly, "Joy, you need to go home now. You've caused enough trouble!"

The next morning, I found Lacey playing in the garden with Elwood.

But her face was troubled, and I knew her thoughts were filled with Lawrence's move to Joy's house.

She gave a sigh and all of last night's bravado was gone as she asked, "Do you think I've lost him, Dad?"

"Lace, Lawrence asked you to move out with him, so you two could be together. He obviously didn't have a clue that Joy never planned for you to join him. She's your cousin, and he probably didn't think about it beyond that. But if you don't take matters into your own hands soon, Joy could ruin things between you and Lawrence."

"But he's already moved in with her…"

"He only moved in last night, he's probably not even had time to unpack, which means it would be very easy for him to move again…if the incentive was right."

Lacey's expression changed from little-girl-lost to woman-determined-to-get back-her-man in a heartbeat.

"I don't care what anyone says, you're a genius, Dad!"

As Lacey dashed to the car for her trip across town, I said to myself, "Thanks. I think."

It had been hours, but Lacey hadn't returned, and we were all getting a bit worried.

Suddenly, Lawrence strolled through the front door beaming, wearing a truly horrendous outfit!

It was obvious it wasn't his fashion sense that Lacey loved.

His grin grew wider as he shouted, "Swansons, I'm home!"

"I'm guessing that means Lacey asked you to move in and you agreed."

"More than that, she asked me to marry her, and I said, 'Yes' so, we're now engaged!"

Branch is growing like a weed and has sprouted curly green hair with blonde streaks.

Leif became a child and I got to take him on his first fishing trip.

Shereen's moving out as she's marrying my nephew, Jordan Dean, and they are expecting their first child.

Terrin's written the sweetest lullaby for little Daisy.

Grandma Summer and Grandpa Nolan moved out with little kitten Kim and our now living with our founders.

Lily was furious with us about Lawrence moving in with Joy Moon.

Hopefully, Lacey and Lawrence's engagement, with Lawrence moving to the farm, will smooth things over.

I know I said life always brings changes, but we've definitely had more than our fair share this time around!

So many, I'm not sure if I can keep up!

Entry 233: An Adoption and a Transformation
« Reply #298 on: November 06, 2023, 04:19:23 PM »

But changes on the farm didn't stop with Lawrence moving in.

Once the sun went down, Loretta went for a run across town.

All the way across town and up to Sweetapple Ridge Way, which for some would seem impossible, but for a vampire, not a big deal.

She hadn't even broken a sweat when she reached her destination, Moon Farm and Stables.

And the object of her journey was standing in the drive, like he was just waiting for her to show up.

"Well, aren't you a beauty!"

Hearing her gentle tone, the young foal raced towards her, nuzzling for a drink.

Not seeing a motherly mare, Loretta obliged with a bottle, which he eagerly gulped down.

"Slow down, boy. There's plenty for you to get your fill. Drink it too fast and you'll get an upset tummy. You need to pace yourself."

The foal nickered and slowed down just a bit, but not much.

Loretta laughed and tilted the bottle back a bit to slow down his intake.

"Mind of your own I see, just like me! I think we'll get along just fine, if I can persuade your owner to let you go, that is."

Hoping to make a good impression, Loretta quickly twirled into a more dignified outfit.

Her knock was answered with a cheerful, "Come in," and Loretta stepped inside and greeted her hostess with a handshake.

"Good evening, Mrs. Moon. We haven't met formally but I'm Loretta Parrott."

"No need to be so formal, Loretta, you're my distant cousin through my Grandpa Leonard, one of Deena's daughters, from the vampiric Kindle side. And with you and Joran being a couple, you're almost my niece, so please, call me Aunt Mia!"

"Thanks… Aunt Mia. I forget how informal Joran's family is. Vampires have a strict hierarchy, in the city anyway. AP is a bit more laid back, since we're all a part of the same clan, except for the townie hybrids. But young full bloods tend to take themselves a bit seriously."

"That doesn't sound much different than other young people, always trying to prove themselves, show off their independence."

Loretta nodded and said, "I never thought of it that way, but you're right. And I guess I'm doing the same thing! I want to carry my own weight on the farm and for me that means horse racing! I heard you might have a foal that was old enough to leave his mum. I was hoping you'd consider selling him to me so I could start training soon."

"It's about time someone on the farm took an interest in horses again. And it would be fitting as he's a descendent of Sunshine and Wayfarer, the original horses on the farm. But he's not for sale."

Seeing Loretta's crestfallen look, she realized the girl was very much a vampire, taking things way too seriously, so she quickly added, "Consider Sparkle a gift, if the two of you hit it off!"

"Sparkle? What a perfect name! I'm working on the Immortal lifetime reward so I can go out during the day, so we'll match!"

Loretta didn't want to, but she confessed, "Actually, we've already met, and I love him already! He's got such a great look and shape, he's fast and eager…"

Aunt Mia laughed and said, "No need to sell him to me, Loretta, I know just how wonderful he is. Lucky for you, he's not just fast, he's brave too, so the separation from his mother, Paprika, shouldn't affect him too much. Especially if he gets lots of love and attention."

"Oh, I'll treat him well, Mrs…Aunt Mia, I promise! And a vampire doesn't make empty promises; a promise is a lifelong covenant. Sparkle will never want for love and affection, or anything else!"

Just as Loretta attached Sparkle's lead rope, a horse raced around the stables and nickered to the foal.

Sparkle tugged on the rope and whinnied back, making Loretta's un-beating heart throb with tenderness.

"Come on, boy. We'll go over so you can say your goodbyes and then we'll head to your new home."

By morning, Loretta and Sparkle were fast friends and Loretta was thrilled at what an eager pupil Sparkle was.

He never rejected a pet and stood surprisingly still while she brushed him.

By their first hug, it was plain to see that Sparkle was just as fond of Loretta as she was of him!

Sparkle wasn't even skittish about meeting his new family members.

He just trotted right up and waited patiently to be noticed.

Unfortunately for Sparkle, the rest of the family was under strict orders to let Loretta be his primary caregiver until the bonding process was complete.

Luckily that didn't take long and by his second night, I got to brush him and get him ready for his stall.

Loretta wasn't exaggerating when she called him a beauty.

He was such a looker that I was tempted to invite Terrin over to paint his portrait!

I was musing that over out loud and had the feeling that Sparkle even understood!

But fawning over Sparkle didn't stop us from visiting our newest grandchild across the road.

Though, it was hard to get a turn holding her with Iris's strict schedule of feeding and napping.

And there was no getting past Officer Wainwright when she was on baby duty!

Iris and Leif had just arrived home, so we chatted with them for a few minutes.

Then Leif sat at the dining table and started on his homework.

Branch had gotten a toy out of the toybox and crawled into the kitchen to play with it.

I couldn't resist a close-up of him playing so intently with his toy, surrounded by the flowers and leaves of his PlantSim genetics.

Like Leif, watching Branch brought memories of Terrin's toddlerhood flooding back.

Here I am, a grandparent three times over from my eldest son, with a daughter who's newly engaged, my youngest son in a steady relationship and taking over the farm, and all I can think about is having another child with Keri!

They say the heart wants what the heart wants, but I wish mine wasn't being quite so persistent.

But Branch, Keri, and I were all shocked when Leif suddenly threw down his homework and shouted, "Can someone please stop Jezebel from playing with that toy! She's making so much noise I can't do my homework!"

Keri and I shared a concerned look but no one else seemed fazed by it.

Except for Branch, who started to cry.

I distracted him by teaching him to walk.

"That's it little buddy, one more step! Gotcha!"

Keri grabbed a bowl of mac and cheese and said, "I've always been pretty good with homework, Leif. Want to give it another try?"

Leif huffed, "Okay, Gram, but it's pretty tough, especially with that cat…"

"Let's just ignore the cat and focus on your math. It looks like you've got the answers right so far, only two problems left. We can handle that and still have time for a bedtime story!"

With Leif back on track, Terrin breezed through the front door, a satisfied look on his face as he announced, "My concert was fantastic! Sold out crowd and a booking for a regular gig! It's only the Flying V Coffeehouse but that means I get home a lot earlier."

I swooped Branch up in my arms and said, "Did you hear that Branch!?! Your daddy's getting more famous every day!"

Branch didn't seem all that impressed by his father's success, but a few tickles had him giggling like crazy.

After the promised bedtime story and some cuddles with Daisy, Keri and I headed home.

But the sight before us was almost as startling as Leif's outburst.

Marisela was chatting with Lacey while a half-dressed fairy guy was dancing under a spotlight!

"So, what do you think, Lacey? Is he good enough for your bachelorette party?"

Seriously!?! They were interviewing party dancers!?! Here in AP? In the front yard of my grandchildren's home!?!

Luckily my daughter was just as offended by the idea as I was!

"I'm not much into parties Marisela, especially not with guys like this in attendance!"

"But Joy said you'd love the idea…"

"Of course, she did! Marisela, Joy and I are not friends! She tried to steal Lawrence from me by letting him move in with her, Kamaya, Shayna and little Joline! She even told him it was her house and that I was welcome, when it's actually Kamaya's house and she wasn't planning on inviting me at all!"

"Oh, so, no party dancers?"

"No bachelorette party at all! I'm sorry but I'm not having anything to do with something Joy's involved in! She probably did this just to embarrass me anyway. An officer of the law interviewing party dancers in her brother's yard with impressionable young children at home? Didn't you think that was suspicious Marisela?"

"But Joy's your cousin…she's more closely related to you than I am. Why would she do something like that?"

"Why indeed. I guess you'll just have to ask her. In fact, let's call her right now!"

But all thoughts of Joy flew out the window as the party dancer suddenly threw back his head, gave a throaty howl, and transformed into a werewolf!

The poor fairy paparazzi who'd just arrived stood stock still in terror and Marisela screamed and ran into the house!

I wasn't doing so well myself as my heart was in my throat, beating a mile a minute!

But my brave daughter just stood there wondering if it was part of his act and if he thought it was romantic.

Not romantic, certainly, but there was no way you could look away!

When the show was over and he was fully transformed, Lacey stepped forward.

"I'm Officer Swanson. We can play this two ways. I can either arrest you for indecent exposure in front of minors or you can give me details on what exactly the lady who hired you said."

His voice gruff, he asked, "Indecent exposure? For the party dancing or the transformation?"

"Make that two counts of indecent exposure!"

In a throaty growl, he protested, "Alright, alright! I'll tell you all about the call. No client is worth being caged like a dog!"

Lacey whipped out her pad and pen and her voice took on a professional tone as she asked, "Your name, address, and contact number?"

"I don't have an official address or contact number, it's all part of the bachelor/bachelorette party service."

"A name, at least? I'm sure it's a good one," With a smirk she added, "They usually are!"

This time he winced as he replied, "Do I have to tell you? Can't you just write down 'unknown source'?"

"I have cuffs itching to be wrapped around hairy wrists…my first off duty arrest too!"

"Okay, okay! My name's Darrel, Darrell Kidding."

"Seriously? Darrell? What's so bad about that?"

"Nothing. If you're a reporter… or a cop! But who wants a party dancer to be named Darrell!?! Like you said, dancer names are usually more...suggestive. You know like, Sugar Free or Jack Hammer! I've even heard of a Hugh Kidding, which would still be better than Darrell."

Lacey frowned, thinking hard, "I see what you mean. Not a memorable name! But your transformation in the middle of dancing sure was! One party dancing gig on the full moon could make you a star! Why not play off that and go by Kit? Wolf cubs are usually called pups, but they're in the same family as foxes and they call their offspring cubs, pups, or kits!"

Darrell gruffed, "Kit Kidding? You know, that's not bad! And playing off my werewolf-side would hopefully stop sims from laughing at my bumblebee wings!"

"Werewolf transformation is terrifying! Trust me, no one would be looking at your wings! Now, about the woman who hired you…"

"Since you helped me out, I'll do the same for you. What do you need to know?"

With all the excitement, I'd almost forgotten that Grandpa Leonard was moving back in.

Until I found him down in the nectary planting specialty grapes.

"Sorry we weren't here to welcome you back, Grandpa, it's been quite the evening!"

"No need to apologize, Scott. I know my way around the farm and, hopefully, my presence will give Rielle more reason to visit!"

"That's the plan. But if you're alright on your own, I'll leave you to it."

Grandpa Leonard smirked and said, "I know that look, boy! Go find your girl!"

And find her I did!

One look at Keri in that little black nighty and I was a goner!

All my longing for another child with her came back, stronger than ever.

Seeing the look in her own eyes, maybe tonight's the night!

Loretta's adopted Sparkle so we now have all three major pets back on the farm.

Our grandchildren are growing like weeds, though Leif seems to have developed a temper.

Lacey's got insider information about Joy's latest mischief from the party dancer/werewolf incident.

Though I'm sure charges against her or the threat of jail time will just intensify Joy's jealousy.

Joy's not a bad sim, she's good actually, but she is unlucky and has never had a steady relationship of her own, especially with so many of the boys in town being related to her.

Maybe we need to do something about that? This town could use some new blood…

But we've got other things to focus on right now.

Grandpa Leonard's back on the farm to help us free Grandma Rielle from Grim!

And I'm still trying to persuade Keri to have another child.

Will we accomplish either of those? Only time will tell.

Entry 234: Visits from Grim!
« Reply #299 on: November 17, 2023, 08:26:08 PM »

Things seemed to be going just fine.

I was up early making a few batches of jams and preserves.

Filling up another shelf.

I've a way to go, but at least I'm making progress.

Loretta was getting stronger every day.

Gaining athletic and martial arts skill at an incredible pace.

In fact, she'd earned so many happiness points from completing wishes for those skills, that she'd bought the Immortal happiness reward!

Joran was still diligently planting plasma fruit for her sustenance, as he could only provide a small amount.

And with the flirty consignment specialist replaced with a more professional one, it was safe to send Joran over with our latest harvestables.

Just a regular day in AP.

So, when Grim showed up we were taken totally by surprise!

Just our luck that the poor unfortunate soul, a stray dog who wandered onto our lot, had reached his allotted lifespan.

And Grim was even pretty nice about it.

Bending down to give the dog a comforting hug.

And then throwing a stick for him to fetch into the green glowing void of the Netherworld.

But Loretta's enthusiastic clapping after the event had me shooting her a startled look.

Seeing it, she apologized, "Sorry. I'm not sure what came over me. I'm usually not so demonstrative. But seeing my sparkles for the first time and then Grim! I was caught off guard, I guess. Living in an immortal vampire household, I've never met Grim before. And with your ambrosia and young again potions, I never expected I'd see him on the farm either!"

"Well, as we can see he's still very much around, not alive and well, but dead and continuing his dastardly duty! And our pets are not as protected as we are. The animal expert happiness reward extends their life a bit, but I tried ambrosia on Max, and it didn't do anything. The pet food bowl helps a bit, but the pets have to buy that with their own happiness points."

Loretta bristled, "Grim better stay away from my Sparkle! And Max and Elwood too, for that matter!"

"We'll just have to remember to have Max and Elwood eat from the special pet food bowl. As for Sparkle, he's young still, but you may want to check out his own happiness points and see if there's something that will help him with aging."

"I will. I'm not giving him up to the likes of Grim! Ever!!! And that's a promise."

That evening, Lacey and Lawrence went to the Winter Festival.

It was almost closing time, so they didn't get to do much.

Terrin was there with Branch, who was looking adorable, as usual.

Later that evening, Grandma Rielle paid us a visit!

I'd placed her urn in the house, so she didn't have to travel as far to reach a plate of ambrosia.

And she really seemed pleased with it.

That or else she was just happy she'd managed to escape the Netherworld and Grim again.

First thing she did was play a computer game.

Then she wandered down to the nectary and possessed a nectar rack.

One that was full of aged nectar too!

I'm sure Grandpa Nolan would have had something to say about that.

But all that activity left her exhausted.

You'd think that ghosts would get plenty of rest in the Netherworld, but apparently Grim limits sleep as well.

She made her way to the back porch, waved goodbye to Grandpa Leonard and Sparkle, and was gone!

She'd managed to hang around a lot longer this time.

Hopefully, it's part of her plan to have Grim think she's just visiting and not trying to come back to us.

Catch him off guard so he can't pull her back.

With their first visit cut short, Lacey and Lawrence went back to the Festival the very next day.

Lacey chatted with her cousin and partner, Leo Moon.

Leo might be Joy's twin, but he and Lacey get along just fine, in fact, they're best friends, "I'll be taking some time off soon for my wedding, Leo. Think you'll be able to handle everything without me?"

"Not a problem, Lace. Patches Wainwright has offered to fill in whenever she's needed, so I'm sure she'll offer to partner me while you're out."

"Oh, I'm sure she will!"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"A little birdie told me that she might have a bit of a crush on you!"

"Patches!?! I always felt she was avoiding me, sometimes she won't even look me in the eye…Oh!"

"Yes, oh! Pay a bit more attention, Leo, and maybe you'll be taking some personal leave of your own soon!"

Then Lacey discovered snowboarding and she was a natural!

Swishing down one slope and up the other, making it look easy.

But Grim interrupted what had been a pleasant day!

Seeing that familiar hairstyle, it looked like Grandma Brooke was going to be in Grim's clutches again!

Thinking quickly, Lacey popped a dish of ambrosia on the table nearby.

But Grim's words had her doing a double take, "Bonnie Tremaine, I have come for you!"

The newly deceased wasn't Grandma Brooke!

Thank goodness.

But would she partake of ambrosia? Here on a community lot?

No. She simply floated by it, shook Grim's hand, and departed for the Netherworld!

They say when one life is taken another arrives to replace it, and this instance was no exception.

Right after Grim took the townie, I got a cell phone text and photo from my nephew, Jordan Dean.

"Shereen just arrived home with our son, Christian! Shereen's still a little shocked by his fast arrival, but mother and nooboo are doing fine."

Lawrence was even more shocked by Grim's visit to the Festival.

Right after they arrived home, he approached me.

"Mr. Swanson, if today has taught me anything it's that life is short and you never know when your time is up, so sir, I'd like to formally ask for your daughter's hand in marriage!"

I paused like I was thinking about it, which had Lawrence wringing his hands in supplication.

But Lacey ruined the moment by saying, "Dad, stop teasing Lawrence! You know you're going to give us your blessing and you're distracting me from the show. You might be a natural cook who's maxed cooking, but I need all the help I can get!"

I gave Lawrence my blessing and he gave me a hearty pat on the shoulder saying, "You won't regret it, sir! I'm going to treat Lacey like a queen! Give her everything her heart desires!"

Lacey piped up again and said, "The queen would like to watch this show in peace."

Lawrence didn't even move out of the way, just started discussing wedding plans!

Keri perked up at that and started listening intently, though I was a bit less enthusiastic.

You would have thought the puzzled frown on my face would have clued Lawrence in.

But he kept rambling on, "It's still too cold for an outdoor wedding. And after today, I don't want a long engagement, so maybe in the nectary? There's plenty of room, especially with a little rearranging."

Keri interjected, "That sounds perfect, Lawrence! Let's go check out the space and start making arrangements. I never thought this day would come, my little girl getting married! Lace, you have to start looking for a wedding dress!"

Lacey sighed, "I guess being treated like a queen and getting everything my heart desires starts AFTER the wedding!"

Lawrence looked startled as he said, "Oh, is there something you wanted, Lace?"

Lacey just sighed again and said ruefully, "No, dear. Nothing at all. But don't complain when you get burnt food for dinner!"

Lawrence looking more puzzled than I was, said, "Your Dad's a great cook, Lace, why would he burn dinner?"

For a genius, Lawrence can be clueless sometimes, but maybe it's just his excitement about the wedding.

Wow, two unexpected visits from Grim!

A poor stray dog here on the farm and a luckless townie at the Winter Festival.

Those events almost overshadowed Loretta's new sparkly daytime appearance and the birth of Shereen and Jordan Dean's son, Christian.

Almost. Despite Grim's perseverance, we're focusing on positive, life-affirming events.

A bonus was Grandma Rielle's recent lengthy visit, the longest one she's managed so far.

But Grim's appearance also lit a fire under Lawrence, and he's asked for Lacey's hand, and I've given my blessing.

So, Lawrence and Keri are deep in wedding plans as they transform the nectary basement into a wedding paradise.

Me? I'm just doing the cooking and staying out of everything else!
