I thought I would let you know, I absolutely love this story.  I ran across this challenge awhile ago and thought about starting it up, and then I saw your story and couldn't help myself!  I just started page 6, but it's the best.  Just thought I would let you know I'm following along!

Thank you so much! Your post made my day! I'm getting ready to wind up this story, but things keep happening that give me other ideas for storylines so it's going to go on a bit longer to get all of those wrapped up.

Dad wanted to go fishing early the next morning, but I made him wait until the first rays of sun hit the pond.

I wasn't taking any chances on one of us seeing those colorful lights in the sky again and being abducted, like Iris!

Later that morning, Iris never even mentioned the otherworldly incident, not even to Terrin.

She was totally in scientific research mode and as soon as she saw Terrin she asked, "How are you feeling? Did you sleep well? No interruptions?"

"None! I'm still not hungry and I've been up for about an hour! How about you?"

"Not even a twinge from my stomach! I'll notate that in my report and if we don't have any issues throughout the day, for a 24 hour period, then I think it'll be safe to conclude that our natural abilities have been completely restored."

"I really can't thank you enough, Iris! For restoring my natural abilities, of course, since that will make pursuing my music career much easier. But it's you who opened my eyes to other opportunities, so whether I go to Uni first or head straight to Bridgeport, it's all because of you! I'm even feeling the urge to paint again!"

"Not all on me, Terrin! It's you who has the talent! And I know that whatever choice you make, you'll find your way on stage, and share your music with the world!"

"And if that painting behind you is an example, I think you're a talented artist too! Why didn't you tell me you could paint like that!?! I don't think you'll have any trouble making the Dean's list in the Fine Arts program at Sims U!"

"I don't have any qualms about the actual painting or musical parts of their program, it's the academics that I worry about. What if I zone out at lectures or freeze during finals!?!"

"Just remember you've got a huge advantage; not needing to eat or eliminate, gives you a lot more free time to study, practice guitar and paint, even do some socializing! And during the day you can photosynthesize and store up energy so you don't need to sleep much either! As PlantSims, both of us could probably handle four or five classes a term, and graduate faster. But since they only allow three classes max, we can relax a bit and enjoy the experience. Maybe even meet other PlantSims!"

"That sounds cool! We could all hang out together and start a club….or even a band!"

"And all PlantSim band, now that would be truly unique and quite the draw for Sims everywhere! See? You do come up with brilliant ideas of your own, Terrin!"

"Only because you've taught me to look at the whole picture, Iris, and think bigger!"

Since there was still some time before the bus arrived, Terrin picked up his brush and resumed the painting he'd started weeks ago.

Nearby, Lacey was having some fun on the bronco rider.

Seeing my children engaged in such normal activities, so happy and carefree, made me feel the same way.

And my smile only grew bigger when Lacey threw up her arm and shouted, "Faster, boy, faster! We have to catch those bandits!"

It's amazing how resilient children are; just helping Lacey with her homework last night and encouraging her baking skills had put her in a better mood.

That had me determined to keep my promise to spend time with her every day after school, to keep our relationship a close one.

As I turned to head to the kitchen to make breakfast, I found Keri mending some of her own fences.

"Iris, I need to apologize. I'm sorry for being so short with you the other evening. Seeing Terrin painting again, I know he's back to his true self! And we have you to thank for that!"

"Not just restoring his natural PlantSim abilities, but taking into account his whole being, physical, mental, and emotional. Your knowledge and instincts were spot on! You'll always have a home away from home here on the farm, Iris!"

"That means a lot, Mrs. Swanson! Terrin and I have become best friends and I'd like to count all of you as friends, too."

Pulling Iris in for a warm hug, Keri said, "You can definitely count me as a friend, Iris!"

After the bus left, the rest of us continued with normal activities, our hearts lighter than they'd been in a long time.

Joran played happily on his own with the dollhouse, until Keri noticed he was trying to eat one of the dolls!

"Uh, uh," she reprimanded him gently, "we don't eat the dolls Joran. Let's get you some breakfast!"

But before Keri could pick Joran up, he'd started crawling towards the kitchen.

Stopping abruptly and then reaching eagerly for the bottle Mom was offering him!

"Here you go, Joran! Grandma's right on top of your eating schedule, young man!"

Seeing Keri's face at Mom's words, I did what any self-respecting husband would do when he was caught between his mother and his wife's strong personalities.

I hightailed it outside as fast as I could!

Heaving a sigh of relief at my escape, I settled down in a chair with a bait book and opened it to the first page.

Content to be outdoors, studying a fishing book, and having things back to normal here on the farm.

It made me smile even more when I caught dad hooting and hollering over his latest catch, his 75th piranha!

He'd set himself a goal of catching 100 piranha as there were so many of them in our pond, the other species were dwindling fast.

Then I peeked in on Joran, who was happily playing his xylophone all by himself.

That freed me up to do something I'd been wanting to do for awhile.

Grow a perfect lettuce!

So I headed down to the nectary and planted one, in the same plot as the perfect tomato and perfect apple tree I'd planted some time ago.

With all the worry over Terrin and Iris, I'd really neglected farm chores, especially the gardens.

Thankfully, we had gardeners that kept up with the weeding, watering, and disposal of barren plants.

But there were quite a few plants that were mature and harvestable in the nectary, so I got to work!

Before I knew it, Terrin was home from school and looked happier than he had in quite some time.

"By your smile I'm guessing that you had a good day, no hunger or bladder issues."

"Not one, Dad! I'm going to go work on my painting and then meet Iris at the Lab for the results of her final tests, but I'm not worried at the outcome at all, I feel fantastic!"

"You and me both, Terrin!"

Just before Iris got off work, I dropped Mom off at the bookstore so she could take a writing class.

With Terrin and Iris's issues so close to being resolved Mom was feeling the inspiration to write again.

At the Research Center, I hung back while Terrin met up with Iris.

"Our blood samples are completely free of the motive mobile residue, Terrin! I thought it might take longer to clear up your blood since you were exposed much longer than I was, but 24 hours was enough!"

"I figured as much, Iris. I haven't felt hungry or had to use the bathroom since you cleansed my blood last night. We should do something to celebrate!"

Iris looked away unable to meet Terrin's eyes.

Then she paced back and forth a bit.

Finally, she turned back to Terrin, "I came here to work on a project, Terrin. To figure out was causing your issues."

"I know and you did it, Iris! You used all your scientific knowledge and your brilliant mind and figured it out, restoring my natural abilities, as well as your own!"

"And now that the project is finished, I have to go home. My Mom booked a flight for me first thing in the morning!"

I heard Iris's voice catch as she started to walk away, then she turned and flung her arms around Terrin and said, "I'm really going to miss you, Terrin! You're not just a project any more, you're my best friend!"

Apparently, Terrin didn't trust himself to speak just held Iris even tighter.

It's official, Terrin and Iris's natural PlantSim abilities have been restored and neither one of them has hunger or bladder issues any more!

But seeing Terrin and Iris's heartfelt hug at her imminent departure was hard to watch.

Terrin might be cured physically but I have a feeling his heart is breaking!

Back at the house, both teens even managed smiles when Iris quipped, "No motive mobiles parked out front anymore! I'm glad your family took my advice and put them in storage!"

"Grandma said they were making us all lazy and weren't proper vehicles for the farm anyway! So, both our battered old trucks will be parked there from now on!"

In honor of it being Iris's last night with us, I thought about cooking Iris's favorite meal.

I was a bit embarrassed at the ridiculousness of my suggestion when Iris laughed and said she'd eaten enough over the last few days and she'd pass on dinner now that her hunger issue was resolved!

I settled for cooking my favorite meal, vegetarian grilled salmon.

Mom and dad had eaten earlier, so it was just me, Keri, and Lacey at the dinner table.

At first we thought Lacey' grumpy face was because I'd made my favorite meal, instead of hers, which is Firecracker Shrimp.

But she revealed the reason for her grumpiness when she whined, "Does Iris really have to go home?"

Keri paused between bites and said, "Yes, sweetie. Iris's work here is completed and she has to go back to her own family."

Lacey finished her dinner, yawned, and said, "I'm sooo tired, do you think Iris would read me a bedtime story?"

Since I'd finished my meal, I said, "Why don't you go ask her and find out? If she's busy packing, I'll read you one!"

Lacey trooped off to the living room, where she found her grandmother and Iris sitting on the sofa.

As both of them looked at Lacey quite sternly, she hesitated just a moment, possibly remembering that frown Iris had given her on the bus on Monday, so she asked, "Would anyone like to read me a bedtime story?"

Mom was quick to say, "Iris and I just finished our little chat, so we're both free. But since it's Iris's last night, I'll let her have that honor."

Moments later, Lacey was tucked into our bed listening to Iris with a contented expression on her face.

It wasn't long before Iris stopped reading and placed a kiss on Lacey's brow, whispering, "Sweet dreams, Lace. I'm going to miss you."

I caught Iris in the hall and said, "You've made a big impression on Lacey, Iris. On all of us, actually! We'll never be able to thank you enough for figuring out what was wrong with Terrin. "

In a totally uncharacteristic move, Iris hung her head, seeming embarrassed at my compliments.

But she quickly recovered her normal self-confidence as she hugged me and said, "I feel that I've gained even more from this experience, Mr. Swanson. Meeting all of you, living here on the farm. It's such a homey place!"

"Like Keri said Iris, consider it your home away from home! The door is always open if you ever want to visit."

Keri hugged Iris next and said, "I know you didn't get a chance to photosynthesize today, so you go get a good night's sleep. The airport van will be here early in the morning."

The next morning, Iris and Terrin seemed a little ill at ease with each other.

Neither one really knowing how to say goodbye.

But upon hearing the horn of the airport van, they quickly hugged and Terrin said, "I'll miss you, Iris! Take care of yourself!"

"I'll miss you too, Terrin! And call me! I want us to stay in touch!"

"I will, Iris."

Iris hesitated then kissed Terrin on the cheek and asked, "Promise?"

Terrin responded so quietly, I almost didn't hear him, "I promise, Iris."

Iris held it together until she got to the front porch.

Then she wiped a tear from her face, sniffed, and said, "I'm going to miss them all so much. But Terrin will call and keep in touch. He promised."

The airport van driver gave another impatient toot of the horn and Iris quickly ran to get in.

With a final wave from the van window, Iris was on her way back home to Sunset Valley.

Lacey and Terrin didn't cry, but neither one of them looked very happy on the bus.

"Will we ever see Iris again, Terrin?"

Terrin mumbled, "I don't know for sure, Lace, but I hope so."

"She was like a big sister to me! Did you feel that way Terrin? That Iris was like a big sister to you?"

"No, not a sister, squirt. Not like a sister at all…"

With Iris on her way home and the kids off to school, I headed for the garden to get some more harvesting done.

It was almost fall, so it'd probably be the last big harvest before the weather turned cold.

But before I could get started, Max nuzzled me for some attention.

I obliged with a belly rub, determined to spend more time with Max and Kimo, now that Terrin's issues were resolved.

Then I got down to some serious red berry bean harvesting, while our gardener kept busy with the weeding.

Seeing the bare orchards in front of me, I knew it was time to focus on the farm again.

There were so many things that I'd neglected since Iris had arrived.

But now that she was gone and fall was fast approaching, it was time to get back to my baking, canning, and making everyone's favorite meals.

Pancakes for Keri, that she could eat any time of day.

Spaghetti and veggie sauce for Mom, who clapped in delight.

While Dad dug in to his favorite, tri-tip steak!

That afternoon, Mom relaxed in a rocker in the nursery.

And Dad helped Joran who was playing with his peg box.

While I headed into town to consign all the produce I'd just harvested, along with quite a few fish.

As I drove by the dog park on my way home, I saw Terrin playing his guitar and singing his heart out.

Looks like he's coming to terms with Iris's leaving in his own way, consoling himself through his music.

And when we got home, continuing the painting he'd started so long ago.

Watching him, I could see that Iris was right, Terrin did have talent!

After dinner, Lacey and I did some fishing together in our pond.

Lacey didn't catch a fish, but she persevered until she earned her first skill point!

What a wonderfully relaxing way to end the day, fishing in our pond with my daughter.

We've said goodbye to Iris and Terrin's handling it by staying focused on his music and his art.

I'm getting back into the groove of life on the farm; harvesting, making everyone's favorite meals, and teaching Lacey how to fish!

But soon there will be more changes on the farm as we've got birthdays coming up.

Entry 198: Keeping Promises
« Reply #259 on: April 04, 2022, 01:35:13 PM »

The next afternoon, I made Lacey's day when she got home from school and found Firecracker Shrimp in the fridge.

She clapped excitedly and shouted, "Thanks, Dad!"

Then she dug in with gusto.

Though when Terrin walked into the kitchen, she did pause for breath to ask, "Have you called Iris yet?"

Terrin stopped in mid-step and said, "Not yet, but I was thinking about it."

When Lacey finished eating she said, "What's there to think about? Don't you want to talk to her and make sure she got home alright?"

Terrin kept his gaze focused on his multi-tab, gulped, nodded brusquely, and said, "Can't talk now, squirt, doing my homework."

But later on, I discovered him phone in hand saying, "Hey, Iris, just wanted to call and make sure you made it home safe and sound. Lacey was asking…"

Whatever Iris said, it had Terrin smiling in response.

Then the two of them chatted for quite some time, with Terrin finally saying, "I promise I'll work on the painting first thing in the morning, Iris. When it's done, I'll send you a photo of it. Something to remember me by."

True to his word, Terrin was up bright and early the next morning, working on his painting, saying, "Iris says, "hi", quirt! She's home with her family, just in time to help her mom plan her big birthday bash. Then she's going to be busy packing for SimU. But she said to give everyone hugs and that she misses all of us."

"Aw, I miss her too, Terrin! I should call her and let her know that!"

"Since she's going to be so busy, maybe one of us calling is enough."

Lacey might only be in grade school, but even she picked up on Terrin's tone and she quipped, "Sounds to me like someone wants to keep Iris all to himself! Maybe you should paint the two of you on that tropical island!?!"

Terrin didn't bother replying to his sister's jab, but his shoulders tensed a bit as he painted the last few brush strokes.

I quickly tickled Joran to break the awkward silence, and his belly laugh had me laughing loudly too.

After breakfast, Mom took Joran outside for a ride on the spring rider.

I think grandparents enjoy it even more than toddlers do!

With the older kids at school and Mom with Joran, Keri and I got in a little alone time.

Very little as Terrin breezed in the door moments later!

Then he stopped in his tracks and said, "If Iris was still here we'd be celebrating her birthday! I can just picture it!"

"We'd all be cheering for her as she stood in front of her cake, pretty as a picture, so poised and perfect."

"Then she'd make a wish, thinking about it to make it a good one as I cheered her on."

"Then, as the sparkles surrounded her, she'd make a cute remark that had everyone laughing."

"And she'd be even more gorgeous as a young adult than when she was a teen. Totally out of my league…"

Terrin's last words shook him out of his vivid daydream and he blinked, and trying to be nonchalant said, "I'll just text her happy birthday so I don't interrupt her party."

Keri and I had stepped away to give him some privacy, but I was still close enough to hear Terrin say, "Pretty lame, huh, Kimo? I miss her so much I'm fantasizing her birthday here on the farm!"

I watched with a heavy heart as Terrin placed his finished painting in Iris's bedroom and whispered, "Happy Birthday, Iris. Lacey was right. More than anything I wish you and I were there…together."

Then he took a photo of it and sent it off to Iris.

Keeping yet another promise.

Terrin finished his painting, just like he promised Iris he would.

And he's called and texted her too, to keep that promise as well.

I have a feeling keeping those promises is tearing him apart.

But instead of a daydream birthday, we've got Joran's real birthday coming up, so maybe that will help Terrin to focus on family, instead of a dream.

« Reply #260 on: April 10, 2022, 07:11:02 PM »

But it wasn't Joran's birthday that took Terrin's mind off Iris.

Just as he was coming out of the bedroom, Mom floated up in the air surrounded by gold sparkles!

There was a bright burst of golden light.

And Mom turned ghostly gray as Terrin sobbed into his hands!

Lacey and I rushed in to join him.

All of us focused on Mom and crying so hard that we barely felt the cold mist sweeping over the floor at our feet.

We didn't even notice the golden urn on the floor.

Or the sharp tip of the scythe that had penetrated the wall!

Terrin's voice broke as he held out his arms and pleaded, "Grandma, Grandma, don't leave us!"

But Mom's spirit drifted behind us as she went to meet Grim!

We felt his cold, deathly presence, but none of us could move, frozen in our grief.

But then my head shot up as I heard Mom say, "A flower for you Mr. Grim. I hope it's up to your exacting standards?"

"For me!?! Why it's lovely! Exquisite! Oh, I know just the vase for it!"

Grim continued, "Such a proper gift requires one of equal value in return. A perfect death flower for me means life for you, Marley Frio Swanson!"

And with those words, he raised his hands, the death flower tightly clutched in one, and Mom's ghost sparkled and started to rise up off the floor.

Not that the three of us noticed, caught up in our grief as we were, not realizing the significance of Grim's words.

And when Mom returned to the floor, it was really Mom, no longer ghostly, but very much alive!

Lacey was the first one to notice and abruptly stopped crying.

Mom started to thank Grim properly, but before she even got a word out, he said, "No time for idle chatter, I need to get this flower into water! Thanks again and enjoy your extra time!"

And Grim vanished right before their eyes in a puff of black and cold mist!

Mom stared at the spot Grim had occupied only moments before and said, "Well, that was kind of rude! But since the flower worked and I've got my life back, I'm not going to quibble!"

Lacey's voice trembled with relief as she said, "Oh, Grandma, you're not a ghost anymore!"

It took a moment for their words to sink in, but then Terrin turned around and realized that Lacey was right and Mom was back with us in her familiar elderly form!

His face filled with joy as he pulled her in for a hug shouting, "Grandma! Grandma! You're really back!"

Lacey stepped closer and waited for her own reunion with her grandmother.

Then Mom was bending down to gather Lacey in a tight hug as well.

"Oh, Grandma, I thought we'd never see you again! I'm so glad you're back!"

"Me too, child. Me too! But I'm fine now, full of vigor and vim, so you get off to bed and I'll be up to tuck you in in a minute. You too, Terrin. Both of you have school in the morning!"

When it was just me and Mom, I pulled her in for a hug, smiling widely, and said, "I'm sure you're exhausted too, I know I am! But the flower worked, Mom! It really worked!"

Mom hugged me back just as tightly, but her voice trembled as she said, "But that was my only death flower, Scott! None of us had more than one. Lacey and Joran don't even one yet, and now neither do I! I've been looking around for more seeds, but haven't found any with the weather turning colder."

"Then we'll have to do something about that! For now, let's all get some sleep."

As I went to lock up, I overheard Terrin on the back porch, "This is way too important to discuss in a text, I need to talk to Iris!"

He quickly punched in her number.

And said, "You're not going to believe this Iris but the death flower worked! Grim came for Grandma just about an hour ago, she gave him the flower, and he took it and brought her back to life! It was a miracle! No, not one I actually saw… Well, I saw Grandma's ghost and then later on she was her normal flesh and blood self and we all heard her and Grim talking, but Dad, Lacey, and I were too full of grief to really take it all in. But Grandma did say that it was her only death flower and she doesn't have any more seeds. So we really need another way to extend their lives…"

Terrin listened for a few minutes and with relief in his voice said, "I knew I could count on you, Iris! That brilliant Wainwright mind has never let us down! Alright, I won't mention it to Dad until you do some research, but Iris…hurry. Grandpa still has his death flower but with him being the same age as Grandma, Grim could show up for him any day and I'd rather not put any of us through that again!"

Before he headed off to bed, Terrin lit the candle in the jack o' lantern that Iris had made before she left.

He knew it was just a superstition, but he figured that anything that could help us ward off evil spirits couldn't hurt.

I agree, and with Iris Wainwright in our corner, we have a better chance than most of surviving such an attack!

Mom's meeting with Grim was unexpected, filled with sorrow when we first lost her.

But the death flower did the trick and Grim joyfully accepted it and gave her back her life.

This had me, Lacey, and Terrin overcome with joy as well, having her back with us.

But that was Mom's one and only death flower and puts her at risk, along with the rest of us as we each have only one, except for Lacey and Joran, as we haven't been able to find any more seeds.

So Terrin has again turned to Iris and her brilliant mind, hoping she can come up with another solution to extend our lives.

One that doesn't require dying first!

But we need a solution soon as Grim could be knocking on Dad's door any day now!

Will Iris come through for us again?

I hope so as, like Terrin, I'd rather not go through losing another family member any time soon.

Entry 200: Birthday Blaze
« Reply #261 on: April 22, 2022, 12:09:41 PM »

The next morning, Mom, looking all prim and proper, was busy working on another book.

"Don't you think you should take it easy for a bit, recover from that harrowing experience with Grim?'

"That experience makes it all the more imperative to seize the day and get things done! Besides, I'm writing about what happened while it's still fresh in my mind. This one's got 'best-seller' written all over it!"

And with those words, she returned to her typing, her white-gloved fingers clicking away industriously on the keyboard.

And when it was time for Joran's birthday that afternoon, Mom did the honors with a huge smile on her face.

I have to admit, she looked fantastic for someone that had died the night before!

Keri seemed more focused on Terrin than Joran, smiling at his exuberant birthday cheers for his baby brother.

With Lacey reminding us that he wouldn't be a baby much longer as she shouted, "Quick, blow out your candles, Joran! Then you'll get to ride the school bus with me!"

None of us was sure how it happened, but one minute Joran's candles were glowing softly on his cake.

The next minute the cake was burnt to ashes!

Mom had turned towards the window with Joran to keep them out of the smoke while Dad started sprinting towards me.

Keri was frozen in mid-cheer while Terrin was just frozen in shock.

And then the kitchen table burst into a blazing inferno!

Mom glanced back at the flames, clutching Joran tighter to her.

Both Terrin and Keri were screaming , hands clutched to their heads.

While Dad looked like he was trying to stop the flames with his bare hands!

Then Keri and Dad both grabbed fire extinguishers and turned them full blast on the flames.

Seeing their determination, Terrin and I grabbed extinguishers too, but the blaze refused to die!

The table was charred, the chairs now engulfed in flames, and Dad, Terrin, and I were choking on the smoke.

But Keri refused to give up, grabbing a fresh extinguisher and yelling, "Don't stop, help me!"

Then she opened up with a full blast of spray as our panicked gardener screamed behind her.

Dad, Terrin, and I regrouped to get a better angle on the fire.

And though Keri's 2nd bottle was now gone, Terrin and I blasted away with two more of our own.

For a fire that started with a little bitty birthday cake, it sure had a will to live!

With a super blast of spray, we started getting it under control, as only one chair was still ablaze.

Keri's thoughts echoed my own as she shouted, "What is taking the fire department so long to get here!?!"

We could here the sirens, and Dad had even covered his ears, whether to drown them out or the screams of the gardener was anyone's guess.

Mom was still trapped in the corner, keeping Joran away from the smoke and flames as best she could.

Then we all breathed a sigh of relief as the last of the flames died leaving puffs of acrid smoke behind.

As well as a now nasty looking birthday cake, a charred kitchen table and two charred chairs.

And that, of course, is when the fire department showed up!

Cousin Deena said, "Sorry, for the delay! We were across town dealing with another fire. I'm glad you were able to contain this one on your own. Fire Chief Dean isn't going to be happy with our response time at all!"

We shook our heads in agreement and thanked her for coming, even if they hadn't done anything to help.

We cleaned the kitchen and replaced the table and chairs with new ones.

I twirled a noise maker and Terrin blew a party horn, as Mom stood before a fresh birthday cake with Joran.

He seemed a bit nervous of the candles once they were lit, and none of us could really blame him.
(F Gen5 L 251)

The Joran noisily blew out his candles shouting, "Fire bad! Fire bad! Go away!"

Mom laughed and said, "He's got that right! This is one little boy who won't ever be playing with matches!"

I gave Mom a half-hearted grin and said, "I guess that's looking on the bright side."

Mom set Joran down on the floor and I gave a weak birthday cheer.

Keri and Dad still seemed to be in shock, their eyes huge and unfocused as they stared blankly ahead.

But Joran cheered for himself happily on the floor, seemingly recovered from the experience.

This snapped the rest of us out of our stupor and we clapped and cheered loudly for the birthday boy.

When the sparkles hit Joran, he twirled on his toes as Keri shouted, "Oh, our youngest baby is growing up!"

Dad gave me a thoughtful look when I froze at Keri's words.

I guess the shock showed plainly on my face at the thought of our youngest becoming a child and no longer having a little one in the house.

Maybe Keri and I needed to have a serious talk about that!?!

But the time for talking wasn't now as just as Joran became a child, Keri rushed past me to open the front door!

Her eyes were huge and wild and there was a look on her face I've never seen before.

I think Keri was scared!

But when she opened the door to young Rosemarie Marshall out trick or treating, she put on a smile and gave her some candy.

"Thanks, Cousin Keri! Granny said you give me something special! I really like your pumpkin and it's silly face. Much better than some of the others I've seen that are just scary!"

"You're very welcome, Rosemarie! And you can stop by anytime and play with Lacey, no need to wait for a special occasion."

"I'd like that! I'll ask my Mom when I get home and see if we can get together tomorrow!"

With our trick or treater taken care of, Keri came back in and joined us for cake.

"That was your cousin Rosemarie, Lacey. She's going to check with her mother about coming over to play with you tomorrow."

"I was going to ask about inviting one of my classmates over this weekend. Rosemarie seems nice and it will be fun having a girl to play with, even better since we're cousins."

"Isn't she my cousin, too?"

"Of course she's your cousin too, since you're my brother and all! But there's only room for two people at my dollhouse so you won't be able to play with us."

"Who said I wanted to play with dolls!?!"

"You played with them all the time when you were a baby!"

"I never played with them, I just chewed on their heads! Besides, I never said I wanted to play with girls anyway!"

My cake finished, I cleared my throat and interrupted before their bickering got any worse, "There are plenty of things to do here on the farm. If the two of you can't seem to do them without arguing, I'm sure I could find some chores that need doing…"

Joran said, "I was hoping you could teach me to fish tomorrow, Dad! Is that a chore we could do!?!"

As I cleared my plate, I laughed and said, "For anglers like me and your grandpa, fishing's not a chore at all! But I noticed some ice on the pond and it's supposed to get even colder tonight, so we may have to put off your fishing lesson until Spring."

Joran stood up to pick up his own plate, but instead of being disappointed about it being too cold to fish, he said, "Colder? I love the cold!"

I shot him a surprised look  and asked, "I thought you liked the heat?"

"I do. But now I love the cold too!"

I just nodded, but I was wondering if that choice had come up in response to the blazing inferno he and Mom were trapped behind when his birthday cake caught the table on fire…

That would certainly explain his preference for cold now!

But thoughts of cold and fishing flew out of my head when I stepped out onto the porch and Terrin said, "Dad, I told Iris what happened with Grandma and how she didn't have another death flower and she just sent me some information that might help with that!"

I listened carefully as Terrin explained what Iris had told him.

When he was finished, he asked, "Does it sound doable, Dad? Eating life fruit sounds okay, but mixing it with death fish….that just sounds nasty!"

"It wouldn't be a combination I'd have ever thought to put together. But then again, who would have thought death flowers would give you extended life!"

"That's true. But do you think grandpa will be up to being the guinea pig?"

"Not if you put it that way! But I'll talk to him first thing in the morning and see if he's willing to give it a try."

After Mom's resurrection and Joran's blazing birthday, I would have said I couldn't be surprised by much of anything.

But I would be proven wrong yet again!

As the information Iris dug up for us is that we need to combine life fruit and death fish in order to safeguard our lives!

And with Dad being so close to meeting Grim, he's the one that will need to eat it!

If I can convince him that is…

Ha, I love that he developed the loves the cold trait after the birthday cake inferno!

I'm glad they got the fire out so he didn't get the traumatic memory of both a birthday fire and someone dying on his birthday!

Ha, I love that he developed the loves the cold trait after the birthday cake inferno!

I'm glad they got the fire out so he didn't get the traumatic memory of both a birthday fire and someone dying on his birthday!

I don't always keep the random traits in my Farmacy but that one fit perfectly!

Oh, I never even thought of that! That would have been a double trauma.

NOW ON TO THE CHAPTER. :)

Terrin was up before I was the next morning, busy at his easel and almost finished with another painting.

Glancing out the window, I found Max socializing with his daughter Razzle.

We hadn't seen her for some time, not since she wandered over here when she was a puppy.

She was definitely not a puppy now, being almost as big as Max, but with a slender build.

It was good to see the dogs becoming friends.

And even though I had no idea what they were barking about, the dogs seemed to be having quite the animated conversation.

I could have sworn I heard a bird squawking and the chirping of a bug amidst all their barking!

At the computer, Mom was busy writing another novel.

She'd definitely called the last one about meeting Grim as it was a best-seller as soon as it hit the bookstores!

Her agent was thrilled that she was writing again and had commissioned three more books.

So I took the opportunity to chat with Dad.

"No need to wait until Spring Scott, I've got a few death fish on hand. But why would you want one of those? I've never heard of anyone eating death fish!"

"What about life fruit, Dad? I put all the ones I had up for consignment and they all sold!"

"I've got a couple of life fruit seeds, but no actual fruit. Did you check one of the storage chests? I'm sure we have some in there. But what's this all about, Scott? Death fish, life fruit…I get the feeling you're trying to tell me something without actually telling me!"

"Well, Terrin told Iris about Mom meeting Grim, using the death flower, and Grim bringing her back. But now Mom doesn't have a death flower and couldn't find any more seeds. And though the death flower worked, it was pretty awful for Mom to have to die and for me, Terrin, and Lacey, to actually watch her death."

"I can imagine! It brought a pang to my heart when your mother told me about it. Lucky for me I was out at the pond fishing and didn't have to witness it! But what does that have to do with death fish and life fruit?"

"Well, Iris used her brilliant mind and her resources and discovered that there's a recipe you can buy called Ambrosia. A very expensive recipe, but one that Mom bought some time ago when it was on sale, of course. I hadn't bothered to read it yet as Ambrosia wasn't one of the family favorites and I just thought it was some fancy dessert. But, according to Iris, it's supposed to have life restoring properties!"

Dad grimaced and said, "Let me guess…since I'm now the one at Death's door, you want me to eat this….Ambrosia… something made with death fish and life fruit! Is it cooked at least!?!"

I reassured him, saying, "Oh, yes! It's definitely cooked. So what do you say? Are you game?"

"Do I have to eat it for breakfast?"

"The recipes pretty lengthy, so I probably won't finish it until late this afternoon, if I get started right now. If it works, it could safeguard the family, Dad!"

Dad didn't sound totally convinced, but he said, "Well, okay son. If you're willing to go to the trouble of learning the recipe and cooking it, I'll do my best to eat it!"

Then we got a call and realized why Kimo was so down in the dumps.

His mate, Belle Pelly, had recently met Grim and wasn't spared like Mom was.

So, while I got started reading the Ambrosia recipe and Joran played video games, Dad gave Kimo some special attention to cheer the old dog up.

Even though I was focused on the recipe it was nice having company, being surrounded by family.

Pretty soon, Kimo was in better spirits and feeling like a beloved pet.

Then Joran played with Max so he wouldn't feel left out.

Belle had been his mother after all, even if her death hadn't affected him as deeply as it did Kimo.

I was about a third of the way through the recipe when Mom and Keri joined me on the couch.

Mom was totally engrossed in an adventure show she'd gotten hooked on.

While Keri was setting up a logic podcast.

With the logic podcast starting, she asked, "Is there something in the house that hasn't been upgraded? I could work on that while I'm listening and, since I'm so close, finish up both my logic and handiness skills to complete my lifetime wish!"

Mom thought a moment and said, "I think everything in the house has been upgraded. But we have a replicator in the nectary that's never been used. You can see if there's an upgrade option on that."

"That's a great idea! If that Ambrosia recipe pans out, maybe we could store some in there and always have it on hand. Along with pancakes!"

I laughed at Keri's obvious hint and said, "Pancakes for sure! But I'm not even half-way through this recipe yet, and then I have to cook it and Dad has to eat it. And then it has to actually work and give him extra days of life. So let's not get ahead of ourselves."

"Good point. But upgrading a replicator sounds like it could take some time as well, so I'll go check on that right now."

But before Keri got to the side door, Lacey asked, "Mom, I was thinking that instead of just asking Rosemarie over, maybe I could have a slumber party tonight!?!"

Keri said, "Your Dad's still reading that Ambrosia recipe and it's Terrin's birthday tonight, so I'm not sure we'd have time to fit that in sweetie. Maybe next weekend?"

"But I wanted a child slumber party, Mom, and my teen birthday is tomorrow night!"

Wow! Time had certainly flown for Lacey's grade school years and her birthday had snuck up on us.

But with that thought came another, Lacey deserved a big birthday bash!

Keri must have felt the same way as she said, "Well then we'll make it work! Right after Terrin's birthday, you can call your classmates and invite them to a slumber party! You've earned it with your good grades!"

Hearing that, I started reading faster as it was going to be a busy day!

With his latest painting completed, Terrin decided to help me out by playing a fast-paced song on his guitar.

Terrin sounded terrific but it startled Kimo so much that he started howling.

Keri took the opportunity to escape the chaos in the house.

By drowning it out with a hammer as she  discovered that she could upgrade the replicator.

Lacey joined Mom and I in the living room for a bit.

But with me reading the final instructions of the Ambrosia recipe and Mom engrossed in her show, she decided that our company wasn't very exciting and headed off to ride on her rockin' rider.

A few minutes later, her show finished, Mom started working out to the stereo.

And I finished learning the Ambrosia recipe!

Dad was right, we had plenty of perfect life fruit and death fish stashed away in a storage chest, so I popped some in the fridge to chill while I showered.

Then I headed for the kitchen, got them out of the fridge, and took a deep breath to settle myself.

I discovered you can actually make Ambrosia any time of the day but it's not available as a group meal, only a single serving.

So, even if Keri can get the replicator upgraded, I'm not sure single serving meals can actually be replicated.

Which means that I could be making single servings of Ambrosia for many years to come!

If it works like we hope…

I chopped with expert abandon, a hand on my hip.

If there's one thing I have total confidence in, it's my prep skills!

With everything chopped, I started mixing it together in a bowl, following the recipe to the letter.

A dash here, a pinch there, fold in the fish, don't stir.

No way was I going to experiment with this first batch!

Strangely enough, after mixing it, one life fruit and one death fish filled up a large baking pan.

The recipe had notated that, but with it being a single serving, I'd thought it was a mistake.

This looked like enough to feed the whole family!

I waited anxiously in front of the oven, checking on it multiple times.

Finally it was done!

I plated the serving and, though it was quite a generous one, it was indeed only enough for one person.

But just holding the plate had my hand tingling with a strange warmth, and not one due to the heat of the oven.

That's when I noticed a green and purple aura steaming from the plate, along with a distinctive aroma.

The quality was perfect, but was there any way Dad was going to eat this!?!

It took most of the day to read the Ambrosia recipe, but I did it!

I even made a serving of it and it turned out perfectly, but it has an unusual green and purple aura around it!

Can I persuade Dad to take a bite, let alone eat the whole serving!?!

I hope so and quickly, because Dad doesn't have any time left to spare!

And we also have Terrin's young adult birthday party to celebrate, along with the slumber party Lacey's hosting tonight.

Let's hope all goes well with a triple play like that lined up!

Entry 202: Triple Play
« Reply #264 on: May 03, 2022, 12:07:45 PM »

Keri was still busy upgrading the replicator in the nectary, so it was me, Mom, and Terrin who gathered at the kitchen table as Dad grabbed the plate of perfect Ambrosia.

Mom and I were so nervous when Dad picked up his fork that we both jumped out of our chairs.

Dad muttered, "Not helping you two! I'm nervous enough about eating this without you two acting like jumping beans!"

And that's when Dad noticed the odd aura surrounding the plate.

He gulped and asked, "Is it supposed to be all misty like that?"

"Yes. It's perfect quality Dad and it wouldn't be if something was wrong with it."

I could see Terrin itching to compare it to dog food but I shot him a look that had him closing his mouth without a word!

Dad finally took a bite and gagged, his eyes huge as he gasped for air!

"Dad, Dad! Are you okay!?!"

Terrin shouted, "Grandma, call 9-1-1!"

Mom said firmly, "NOT funny, Diwan! I can tell when you're trying to be funny and this just isn't the time!"

Dad tried to hide his smirk as he said, "Sorry. I couldn't resist! It actually tastes pretty good! Or it would if I didn't know it had death fish in it!"

Terrin groused, "Grandpa! That was just mean!"

I couldn't hide my own smile, but I tried to cover it with my hand thinking that Dad was right.

It was pretty funny!

Dad ate every bite of the Ambrosia and then stood up so abruptly he bumped into Terrin.

The aura that had surrounded the Ambrosia now surrounded Dad!

"Something's happening to me!"

Moments later, Dad picked up his plate with a jaunty step and crowed, "It worked! It worked! I feel full of life again, just like when I first became an elder! You did it Scott!"

Mom and I hurried to Dad but I got there first and pulled him in for a huge hug.

Terrin clapped and shouted, "Not just Dad, Grandpa, but all of you! Your gardening skill provided the life fruit, your fishing skill acquired a death fish, and Dad's cooking skill made the Ambrosia. It's like the triple play of all triple plays!"

Mom added, "And don't forget Iris's contribution! Without her brilliant mind and research skills, chances are we would never had discovered the power of Ambrosia!"

At Mom's words, Terrin froze, and whispered, "There's no way any of us could forget Iris, Grandma, especially me."

While Terrin got ready for his birthday, mom and dad shared a romantic moment.

"Diwan, I'm so relieved it worked! The death flower works, but it's unsettling, to say the least, to have to die and have family watch that happen! Now we've got unlimited time together! Between Ambrosia and Death Flowers, well, we're pretty much immortal!"

Mom's words almost had me dropping the food I'd taken out to prepare for dinner.

But I recovered just in time and I was happy about that as tonight I was making Joran's favorite.

Hamburgers!

I figured they'd appeal to Lacey's slumber party guests as well, so two birds with one stone.

Our family sure is getting good at multi-tasking, first a triple play, now two birds with one stone.

And Keri's no exception, as a few more hammer strokes had her finishing the upgrade to the replicator.

As well as maxing her handiness and logic skills, completing her lifetime wish!

Another score for the Swanson family!

Just in time too, as Terrin was ready to become a young adult!

"Any wise words of wisdom, Grandpa, before I blow out my candles?"

Twirling a noise maker, Dad chuckled and said, "Don't set the table on fire!"

As Joran and Lacey joined us, just before Terrin blew out his candles, Mom added, "Follow your heart, Terrin. There's duty and being proper, but without love, it's hard to find happiness. Whether it's a skill you love, a career, or a person, don't give up your dreams. And if you're lucky, really lucky, you can have a three!"

Mom resumed her enthusiastic party horn blowing and Dad joined her.

Over the noise, with his candles safely extinguished, Terrin said, "Well, I managed to follow your advice Grandpa, no fire. I hope Grandma's advice is as easy to accomplish!"

While he was looking fondly at his grandparents, the birthday sparkles caught him.

And my oldest son became a young man, sporting a leafy beard!

Hands proudly on his hips, Terrin asked, "What do you think of the new leaves, Grandpa, is it me!?!"

Both Dad and Keri stopped dead in their tracks and couldn't seem to find anything to say.

I must admit, it was a bit funny seeing Terrin with facial hair, well, facial leaves…

And even funnier when he changed into his outerwear, a long-sleeved tee with overalls!

I couldn't hold back my smile as I said, "Well, if you were planning on staying on the farm, that outfit would be perfect!"

Terrin lost his smile and said, "The age-up clothes fairies have an odd sense of humor, that's for sure. Especially since I'm now…"

But before Terrin could reveal his new trait or his plans for the future, our house was filled with grade school children!

Lacey's classmates had arrived, most of them already wearing pajamas, bursting with excitement at attending their first slumber party.

I had to confer with Dad to work out all the family relationships since our extended family is huge now.

The blonde boy is Isaac Kindle who is a witch, courtesy of his mother, Callie, who is married to Grandpa Leonard's nephew Irving Kindle.

The fairy with bright blue fluttery wings is our papergirl, Kami Ross; her wings seemed to startle Joran who stood frozen as they fluttered past his face.

The girl with the vibrant blue skin is Tanisha Parrot, Deena Kindle's daughter with Matua Parrot.

Oh, maybe it's the fact that Tanisha's a vampire like her mother, Deena, that startled Joran!?!

Deena's Irving Kindle's sister, so she's Grandpa Leonard's niece, making Isaac and Tanisha his first cousins, and distantly related to us.

A closer cousin is Marisela Gallo, the girl in the purple pj's with the red bow in her hair.

She's my cousin Tyler Gallo's youngest daughter and her mother is Claire Loveland, Keri's sister, so we're related on both sides of her family, making her both my niece and my cousin!

That might sound odd, but since several of our family members married Loveland girls, that's pretty normal in our family.

Both Isaac and Marisela grabbed hamburgers and starting eating and chatting, already having a good time.

So did our paperboy, Damien Nugent, a fairy with tiny green bumblebee wings.

Rosemarie Marshall, my cousin Karie (Schmidt) Marshall's daughter, stood at the corner of the table waiting her turn to grab a plate of food.

Once the kids were finished eating, Lacey, playing hostess, asked, "Does anyone want to hear a ghost story before bedtime!?!"

The girl in purple pj's said, "Sure! That sounds like fun!"

Though I'm not sure Damien was as enthused as his face froze at the mention of ghosts.

Lacey got into her own sleepwear, turned off the lights and grabbed a flashlight to set the scene.

She did a pretty good job of telling a scary story too, one filled with skeletons who walk the night as ghosts.

Marisela opted to listen as she reigned over the royal court at the chess table.

But Isaac and Rosemarie, now dressed in a muscle costume, sat listening, gasping at all the right places and shivering with pretend fright.

And just before it was bedtime, Lacey dramatically concluded with, "Only the bravest dare to sleep in our barn as there's always a chance….that they're coming for YOU!"

Despite, or maybe because of, Lacey's dare, they all bedded down in the barn!

I guess none of them really believed a ghost would come for them as the room filled with the gentle zzz's and vvv's of children's snores before I even turned off the lights.

But Grandma Rielle couldn't resist checking on the sleeping children; all snug as bugs in their sleeping bags.

Her gaze focused on Marisela Gallo and with a jolt I realized Marisela, Rosemarie, and Lacey were all her great-granddaughters!

No wonder she decided to pay us a visit.

Luckily, she didn't disturb the children as she floated quietly through the crowded barn floor.

Well, all but one of them, as Kami asked Keri for a bedtime story…in our bed!

I guess Keri and I will be sleeping in the spare room tonight.

But after such a busy day, just the idea of bed, any bed, sounds good to me.

Well, we managed another triple play.

Dad ate my Ambrosia and it extended his life.

Terrin is now a young adult.

And Lacey got to have her child slumber party complete with ghost story and an actual ghost!

But we've still got more events to celebrate as Terrin's graduation is tomorrow and so is Lacey's teen birthday.

And I'm planning a big family birthday bash!

Entry 203: A Graduate and a Teenage Daughter
« Reply #265 on: May 11, 2022, 11:22:55 AM »

The next morning, Terrin was up bright and early, sans beard, and wearing his new sleepwear.

When he got to the kitchen and found Keri eating her last bite of breakfast, he said, "Aww, I was going to make pancakes and surprise you, Mom!"

Keri said, "I'm sure all the children would love pancakes for breakfast. Wait! Are you feeling hungry!?!?"

"No, Mom, I'm fine. I haven't been hungry since Iris cleansed our blood. I just got the itch to serve a meal and since it was morning and pancakes are your favorite…"

"Oh, in that case, go right ahead. I can eat pancakes any time!"

"Well, I'm sure they won't be perfect like Dad's…"

"I'm not that picky, especially if I don't have to cook!"

Terrin even surprised himself as the pancakes he made were great!

Keri wasn't a lucky, now that she maxed logic she wanted to discover all the potions.

And her experiment went dreadfully wrong, singeing her from head to toe!

The blast was so loud that Isaac, Marisela, and Rosemarie, burst from their sleeping bags, feathers flying!

And one by one the children thanked Lacey for a terrific party as they headed inside for breakfast.

The last two, Tanisha and her brother Elliot, carrying umbrellas as it had started to rain.

It's easy to tell these two are siblings since they're both blue-skinned and vampires, like their mother, Deena.

Oddly though, Elliot is a Kindle, while Tanisha and her older sister both have Matua's surname, Parrot.

I guess Deena wanted her son to carry on the Kindle name here in AP as well as her brother's son, Isaac, with Grandpa Leonard giving up his surname and becoming a Swanson.

I can't blame her as with so many girls in our families in the past, it was easy to lose surnames.

But this generation has run more to boys with Mia having 2, Bella having 3, Catrice having 2, and me having 2, for a total of 9 boys; with the girls being 2 for Mia, 1 for Bella, 1 for Catrice, and 1 for me, so only 5 of them.

Of course, that's two Moon boys, three Dean boys, two Bluegill boys, and for me, two Swanson boys.

But with those odds, it's a pretty sure bet that there will be Moon, Dean, Bluegill, and Swanson surnames for generations to come here in AP!

Maybe in Bridgeport too or wherever the decide to live!

With Lacey's guests gone, as well as the pancakes, Keri and I ate blueberry muffins, courtesy of Lacey and Joran.

"These are delicious, Lace! You've become quite the little baker and I see you've given Joran a few pointers too!"

"Mostly not to walk away from the oven! The first ones he made were burnt and nasty!"

With our breakfast finished, I glanced into the living room and said, "All set for your big day Terrin?"

"I'm ready, Dad!"

Seeing Terrin standing there in his cap and gown, a big smile on his face, my smile grew even bigger.

My oldest son was a young man now, smart, creative, talented, with a bright future ahead of him.

"Hey little brother, hurry up and get dressed. Grandma and Grandpa are ready to go!"

Not only were Mom and Dad ready, they both looked fantastic in their formalwear!

Dad didn't dress up very often, so it was easy to forget just how nice he cleaned up.

Seeing them both looking so vital, so full of life, I said a silent thank you to Joy, to Grim, and extra thanks to Iris.

Between the three of them, we'd now have Mom and Dad with us for a long, long time.

Lacey looked so sweet in her pretty dress.

The weather had cooperated with the rain stopping and the temps rising.

Then Joran finally came racing out of the house dressed in his best.

We got to City Hall in plenty of time and Terrin paused in front of the entrance.

He raised his hands dramatically and said, "This is it! When I walk out of these doors again, I'll be a high school graduate!"

Dad joked, "But for that to happen, you need to go inside first!"

After the ceremony, we followed Terrin outside.

The weather had warmed up enough that I was thinking about fishing in the pond with Joran.

Terrin had his diploma clutched tightly in one hand and he was staring at it filled with pride.

A pride that was well-deserved as he'd graduated valedictorian of his class and his classmates voted him Most Popular!

Mom gave Terrin a proud look of her own and asked, "Maybe we could take some family photos with the new graduate?"

Terrin's smile grew bigger as he headed back inside saying, "That's a great idea, Grandma! I could send one to Iris!"

The photo they took together turned out fantastic and will be a cherished memento of the occasion.

After Terrin sent the photo on to Iris, he immediately got a text back with congratulatory wishes that asked him to call if he wasn't too busy.

Terrin laughed and said, "Like I'd ever be too busy to talk to Iris! I'll call her back right now. You don't mind do you, Dad?"

"We've got to get things set up for Lacey's party, but I think you've got time for a phone call."

Terrin immediately rang up Iris and as soon as he heard her voice his face lit up.

"Thanks for the graduation text, Iris! And even more for that Ambrosia recipe you told us about. Dad made it and it worked! Grandpa ate it and he feels fantastic, with a new lease on life! You always come through for us, Iris, and we'll never forget all you've done for us! How's it going at SimU? Meet any other PlantSims yet?"

Terrin listened for a bit, then said, "My plans? Hold on, Iris."

He covered the phone with his hand and added, "This could take a bit, Dad, I'll just meet you at home. I won't be late. Promise."

"You've never broken a promise you've made yet, Terrin, so I don't expect this one to be any different."

As I was getting into the truck, I couldn't help but overhear Terrin's excited exclamation, "I'm back, Iris! And I took your advice again about thinking bigger. I chose Natural Born Performer for my new trait so, instead of becoming just another rock star, I'm going to shoot for the stars and become a Vocal Legend in Bridgeport! I'm going to give it my all, sing and play guitar, and fulfill my dreams doing what I love, just like Grandma told me too. That's a promise I'm making to myself!"

My heart was heavy on the drive back to the farm as I replayed Terrin's words over and over again in my head.

Terrin was planning on leaving us soon, heading to Bridgeport to fulfill his dreams.

I was happy for him, of course, and I knew he would do it, too, with all his talent and creativity.

But even more because he made that promise to himself and, like I'd reminded him, he'd never broken a promise.

Back at the house, we were busy setting up Lacey's birthday party, and before we knew it, our porch was filled with family.

Lots and lots of family!

We'd only invited my sisters and their families, but since they had 11 children between them, it was still quite the crowd!

Lacey stood before her cake, pausing to think of a good wish as family started gathering around her.

Joran was staring worriedly at the lit candles, with his recent experience, who could blame him.

Jasmine Dean, Bella and Jeffery's youngest, now a teen, shouted birthday wishes.

Marisela Gallo had joined us too as she'd come over for a play date and stayed for the party.

Catrice, my adopted sister, twirled a noise maker, and cheered loudly.

This didn't seem to faze Jeremy Dean, one of Bella and Jeffery's older twins, who stood behind her, looking dashing with his red hair setting off his dark suit.

With the candles safely extinguished, Lacey starting clapping as more guests made it into the kitchen.

My Aunt Kindle, who can never resist a party.

Catrice's oldest son, Shawn Bluegill, who inherited Catrice's distinctive IF green hair.

Keri was smiling proudly in the back, not looking old enough to have a teenage daughter!

With a now young adult Kamaya Moon dressed in a mishmash of clothes; making it clear she still didn't care what she wore.

Joy Moon, Mia and Anoki's youngest daughter, came in looking beautiful and carrying a plate full of burgers.

Joran will certainly appreciate those!

I finally made my way towards the birthday girl just in time to see Lacey's startled look as sparkles swirled around her.

Oh, I think it was Shawn blowing that party horn in her ear that was making her cringe!

Mom arrived just in time to see her youngest granddaughter become a teen!

Lacey had kept her braids, but her pretty green party dress was replaced with a bright blue top paired with a short purple skirt!

The clothes weren't really Lacey's style but the look she shot her cousin, just daring him to comment, was all Lacey!

So no rude comments were heard, just lots of clapping and shouts of "happy birthday" filling the room.

Though with Kamaya's choice for her new young adult formalwear and Shawn's caftan, Lacey wasn't the only one who was experiencing a wardrobe malfunction!

Mom even let go and blew a party horn with shouts of, "Go, Grandma, go!" from all the grandchildren surrounding her.

Shayna Bluegill, Shawn's twin, cheered, and Mia's youngest son, Leo Moon, clapped and shouted wildly.

Jeremy was anxious to grab a piece of birthday cake as he said he was starving.

Then, of course, the doorbell rang, adding to the noise.

I grabbed a party horn as Mom started twirling a noise maker.

My sister Bella, wearing her trademark purple dress, was trying to get her husband's attention, but having no luck.

Behind her was Dirk Bluegill, Catrice and Josh's youngest son, dressed in the same caftan as his brother, Shawn.

I'm sure those are courtesy of a trip to Egypt for one of Catrice's concerts.

Terrin finally made his way through the crowd and with a smile, shouted, "Happy Birthday, squirt! Good thing my birthday was yesterday and I'm taller than you again or I wouldn't get to call you that!"

Lacey grabbed a piece of birthday cake and headed outside to the pavilion, where it was much cooler.

The temps had dropped again and it was cold enough that Lacey was even wearing her new outerwear.

It wasn't in her favorite color lime green, but she looked quite stylish in the white pants, blouse, and gloves, with the red tailored jacket.

Someone asked, "So what did you wish for Lacey?"

Lacey smiled and said, "I can't tell you that or it won't come true! But if you're trying to think of a birthday gift, I'd love a kitten! I just love the furry little critters now!"

Outside, Lacey headed over to join her Aunt Catrice and grandfather.

As she dug into her cake, Catrice said, "Great party, Lace!"

"Thanks, Aunt Catrice. I…"

But before she could finish her sentence, Joy faked a yawn and interrupted with, "I thought it was pretty boring myself."

Lacey didn't say a word just stared at her cousin with a look that was colder than the frost on the ground.

Dad didn't even look up just said, "Joy, since you're looking for something to do, give your grandmother a hand and clear the tables out here."

Joy protested, "I wasn't…

Dad looked up and said, "Now, please."

Joy stiffened and said meekly, "Yes, Grandpa."

With Joy's attitude curtailed by Dad, Lacey dug into her birthday cake with relish!

I was so proud that she didn't let her rude cousin ruin her party!

Another busy day with Terrin's high school graduation and Lacey's teen birthday party.

Terrin's phone call with Iris revealed his future plans to go to Bridgeport and become a Vocal Legend.

I don't doubt for a minute his ability to fulfill his dreams though I would have enjoyed having him here on the farm for a bit longer.

Dad managed to put a halt to what could have been a nasty argument between brave Lacey and her snobby cousin Joy.

This time anyway.

I'm not sure how that will turn out now that they're both in high school and Dad won't be there to referee, but hopefully the two cousins can find some common ground.

Entry 204: Two Unexpected Decisions
« Reply #266 on: May 30, 2022, 10:02:31 AM »

The next morning, Terrin was up early, and I listened shamelessly when Grandma Brooke asked, "So have you decided yet on becoming a rock star in Bridgeport or studying Fine Arts at Uni, Terrin?"

"Neither, Grandma Brooke! I've decided to set my sights even higher, like Iris encouraged me to do, and become a Vocal Legend in Bridgeport!"

Grandma Brooke's ghostly face broke into a huge smile, "Now that's certainly a lofty goal! I'm so proud of your determination and initiative, Terrin! Bridgeport is known for it's celebrities, and a lot of sims go there hoping for their big break. The film industry actually got it's start there and has would-be actors and directors trying to make their mark on SimLand and become well known in the field as their celebrity status grows. But the music industry can be even harder as the competition is fierce with everyone vying for a gig in all the best clubs!"

"Any advice on how to stand out in such a big crowd?"

"Well, with your talent on the guitar, and being a Plantsim, you definitely have an edge, but it wouldn't hurt to have some experience along with that and be a notch or two above the run of the mill performer. Maybe start performing to a crowd that knows you and is willing to stop to watch and listen rather than just gawk at a green-skinned stranger and keep on going!"

Thoughtfully, Terrin nodded, "That's actually sounds like a good idea, Grandma! I'll head to Performance Park right after breakfast and talk to the proprietor! That way I could get the more embarrassing levels of the career out of the way here, gain some experience, then hit the city and take it by storm!"

"I don't doubt that you'll do just that, Terrin! But…what about Iris? I got the feeling there was definitely something between you…"

Terrin sighed and said, "Oh, there was, Grandma, there was. Is, I should say, as Iris still has a place in my heart and always will. But she has a boyfriend and the idea of playing third wheel at Uni with them…watching the two of them together…it would just be too hard. And though a Fine Arts degree would help if I wanted to be a rock star, it won't do anything for a singing career."

"Well, it sounds like you've thought it all through and chose what works best for you under the circumstances. Good luck on your audition today!"

Upstairs, Lacey woke up in a great mood.

She was all excited about being a teen and heading off to her first day of high school.

Since Joran loves cold weather, he slept in the tree house and was up early playing spy.

Luckily, the tree house telescope isn't very powerful and there's no danger of him actually spying on the neighbors!

But on the bus, both of them seemed subdued, even a little anxious, for their first days of school.

Joran looked nervously at Lacey and asked, "What if the kids don't like me!?!"

Despite Lacey's sober look, she tried to reassure her brother, "The teachers and kids are all pretty nice, Joran. You'll do just fine and have a lot of fun, especially on field trips."

"If that's true, why do you look so worried?"

"I'm not really worried about the school part of it, it's just that once you're in high school there are proms, fancy formal dances.  And unless our paperboy has a birthday, my only options are going on my own or with a cousin, since we're related to almost everyone in town, and neither of those choices sounds very appealing. "

After the bus left, Dad called me around to the side porch and dropped another bombshell,  "I know grandparents have always stayed on the farm before, Scott. But circumstances are different now that we have death flowers and ambrosia available to us."

By the serious look on Dad's face, I knew he'd made up his mind, but I just had to ask,  "You're sure about this decision, Dad? Maybe Kobe just wasn't hungry?"

"Oh, he was hungry alright! Yet, he ran right past the dish of ambrosia!"

"And floated as fast as he could towards a pet food dish! I was pretty shocked and even looked it up in one of your books. It said that to get ghosts in the household to eat ambrosia there needs to be an open spot in the household, so it won't happen if we stay here!"

"But we've got an open space, Dad…"

Dad look a bit guilty as he said, "About that…I got a kitten for Lacey for her birthday and it arrived before Kobe showed up, so I guess it was me that messed that up."

I laughed and pulled him in for a hug, then we were slapping each other on the back and making a promise that we'd go on a fishing trip as soon as the ponds were free of ice.

"You, me, Joran, and Terrin, if he's still around and wants to join us! Where's he gotten off to today, anyway? He shot out of here like a rocket after breakfast."

"He went to see the proprietor at Performance Park in town. Terrin's going to start his singing career here in Appaloosa Plains! I know he's going to head to Bridgeport eventually, I'm just glad he's sticking around here for a bit longer, especially with you and Mom deciding to get your own place."

Before we went inside I made dad another promise, "I'll make sure we've got plenty of ambrosia on hand to keep you and Mom with us even if you don't live here on the farm, Dad!"

"We're counting on that, son!"

I found mom in the nursery, relaxing after a work out session.

"So, you're on board with Dad's plans to move out?"

"Of course! Your father wouldn't have made such a decision on his own. We discussed it after he saw Kobe run right past the dish of ambrosia! And if we want to determine just how restorative ambrosia is, you need space here on the farm to test it.  And since your father is the one that got that kitten, he feels responsible for filling up the house."

Then Mom gave me one of her rare smiles and hugged me tight, "We'll miss all of you, Scott! But we're actually looking forward to being on our own, at least for a while."

I wasn't sure what Mom meant with that last comment, but I didn't ask her to elaborate either.

Finding out that Terrin was staying on the farm a bit longer, but that mom and dad were leaving it, were more than enough surprises for one day.

Then mom and I joined Joran in the living room to watch him play a video game.

Mom jumped in after he finished the first race and the two of them were so competitive I was glad I chose to watch!

During a break in game play, Joran, told us that a few of his cousins that he'd met at Lacey's slumber party were in his class so his first day at school had gone well.

Then he excitedly told us that he'd seen his Aunt Catrice on the bus ride home.

"She was driving her pink limo, Dad, and looked so cool! I told the bus driver she was my aunt and she went all over Simland performing concerts to sold out crowds! He said it must be nice to know celebrities like that. And I told him my brother was a PlantSim and he was going to be a famous singer in Bridgeport someday!"

Just when we'd given up on the 'famous singer' getting home before Joran's bedtime, Terrin showed up.

Dad said, "Glad you made it before it was time for us to leave Terrin, your grandmother will be pleased to get to say her goodbyes."

Terrin shot me a look and said, "So I decide to stay on the farm a bit longer and now grandma and grandpa are leaving!?! What prompted that?"

Dad said, "Your father will explain later, since it's late and Joran needs to get off to bed for school tomorrow."

Then dad bent down and hugged Joran tightly, and said, "The first day the ponds are free of ice, we've got a fishing trip planned my boy!"

"I can't wait, Grandpa! I'll make sure and check every day! But if it snows, maybe you could help me build a snowman or an igloo?"

"It would be my pleasure, Joran! I'm definitely looking forward to lazy days without the responsibility of the farm and so is your grandmother. But now that you're old enough to help, your parents won't be left short handed."

"I'll do everything I can to help, Grandpa! Hot or cold weather, I just love being outdoors."

"You're going to make the perfect farmer, Joran, carrying on the traditions that we've established over the years. Now go get some sleep! Those eggs won't gather themselves in the morning but if you leave a few of them, you could have baby chicks to play with!"

Terrin was being squeezed in a tight hug by his grandmother when Lacey came inside.

With everything else going on, I hadn't even realized she hadn't come home after school and now it was past curfew!

But now wasn't the time to get into that especially since Lacey was stunned when she realized her grandparents were saying their goodbyes before leaving the farm.

I knew just how blind-sided she must feel as I'd felt the same way earlier today.

But when her grandfather handed her a present, she was all smiles again.

She shook it gently, "What is it?"

"Open it and find out!"

When Lacey opened the box, there was tiny pet collar nestled inside the tissue paper.

"It's so small it wouldn't fit Kimo or Max, and they both have collars, so…

Then her confusion turned to excitement as she shouted, "You got me a kitten, Grandpa! Best. Present. Ever! Where is he, or is it a she?"

"It's a boy and he was napping, but I'm sure he's ready to meet you by now."

As she flung her arms around him, Dad asked, "Is this for the kitten or is it my goodbye hug?"

Lacey's words were spoken into dad's shoulder, but we managed to hear them, "Both! Oh, Grandpa, I'm happy and sad at the same time. A kitten of my very own is wonderful, but the thought of you and Grandma not being here…that's hard to take in."

"Well, we're staying right here in AP, not moving to China, so we'll be visiting frequently and we expect you to visit us regularly as well."

"I will Grandpa. That's a promise!"

With their goodbyes over with Dad put on his outerwear and gave the home he'd always lived in a fond farewell look.

"You take care of the family now, watch over them, and keep them safe."

I wasn't sure if he was talking to the house or the family ghosts but, either way, it felt like the house grew just a bit warmer, wrapping us in a comforting hug at Dad's words.

And if I had any reservations about Mom's feelings, they were quickly banished.

The excited look on her face, the sparkle in her eyes, and the soft smile all showed she was happy at the thought of moving to a place of their own.

Then I realized that with Mom being raised in the foster system and then moving to the farm with Dad, she'd never actually had a home of her own before, one with her name on the deed.

No wonder she looked so excited and her words reflected it, "Come on, Diwan! I can't wait to get to our new home!"

Then I took a final photo of the two of them as they headed for the front door with Kimo leading the way.

Lacey watched her grandparents leave and, by the look on her face, it was another bittersweet parting.

She was sad to see her grandparents leaving, but happy to be cuddling her new kitten, Elwood.

He's the cutest gray and white ball of fluff and he's already looking at his new mistress with adoration!

I was thrilled to find out that Terran took Grandma Brooke's advice and was beginning his singer career right here in AP!

Right after that I found out that Lacey was concerned about the lack of unrelated sims in town.

Then I found out mom and dad were moving to a place of their own and they left with Kimo that very night!

So now we have space in the house to test the ambrosia and see if it really can bring back family ghosts or ghosts pets from the Netherworld.

Dad's parting gift was a kitten for Lacey and I'm sure they'll be best friends in no time.

Adding a pet to the household was simple enough, but finding unrelated sims for Lacey and Joran won't be so easy to fix.

But before I even think about that, I need to check out Mom and Dad's new place.

And find out how Terrin's day went and why Lacey stayed out so late.

Entry 205: New Home and Explanations
« Reply #267 on: June 05, 2022, 11:59:06 AM »

Mom and Dad's new place* was a one-story ranch on a large lot.

It had a cobblestone path to the front door with an old-fashioned streetlamp showing off the well-kept flower beds.

There were tall sunflowers flanking the front corners and softening the edges with a wheelbarrow planter full of colorful flowers providing the final touch of quaint country style.

And the interior was just as pleasing as the exterior, with a whimsical air brought out by all the touches of green, pink, and purple.

Those colors were right up Mom's alley, so it was no wonder she was so excited about living here.

I was a bit surprised that the house had four bedrooms, but Mom said that was in case things worked out with the ambrosia.

When I looked puzzled, she explained further, "Well, if the ambrosia works and the family ghosts and cats come back to life, they'll need a place to live, Scott. I figured all of us old folks could live here and keep the Swanson generations together. Of course, some of them may decide to find there own places, but this will give them options until all that gets sorted out."

I wanted a photo of them in their new home but just as I snapped it the phone rang and Mom and Dad turned toward the wall and so did Kimo!

But then Mom said she'd rather I show off the house than them, so I turned my attention to the rooms.

In the entry, there was a chess set, a guitar, and an easel nearby, so plenty of fun indoor activities to keep them occupied during inclement weather.

The spacious living room centered around a new tv and a bookcase with plenty of comfortable seating, even if the house was full.

The flower touches around the room turned it from just a house to a home.

Mom said, "The walls are a bit bare but I'm hoping to add some family photos, either from the Festivals or City Hall. And with two artists in the family, I'm sure they'll be able to contribute as well!"

"Getting together at the festivals shouldn't be too difficult and I'm sure Josh and Terrin would love to contribute a few of their paintings."

The kitchen was bright and airy and had modern appliances with a bar counter for prep space as well as additional seating.

The same homey touches were here too with a large bouquet of flowers in the corner behind food canisters in a warm tone brightened by hand-painted sunflowers.

The crock by the stove holding utensils even had a rooster on it!

Maybe Mom and Dad wouldn't be averse to having a chicken coop to provide fresh eggs?

When I broached the subject, Mom said, "Let's table that for now and visit it again in the Spring. I don't relish getting up at the crack of dawn with a rooster crowing and having to go and gather eggs in the cold!"

I winked and said, "Especially if you're up into the wee hours of the morning writing!"

Along with a new gnubb set, there were other outdoor activities, a basketball hoop and a trampoline for Mom, to help her keep in shape.

And a telescope for searching out the galaxy, though I cautioned them on using it unless they wanted visitors from outer space or worse, being taken like Iris was!

Then I saw what had sold dad on the property.

A fishing pond in the back corner!

Joran and I will definitely be visiting once the weather warms up to get in some fishing with Dad!

And with the property being so beautiful, it deserves daytime photos as well to truly show it off.

Visiting will be easy as Mom and Dad's house was built on the empty lot next door to the farm!

Just as I was leaving, Mom turned on the hanging green lights, giving the house a touch of holiday charm.

No doubt the proper thing to do during the winter season.

Just as I returned from helping mom and dad get settled into their new place, Keri was unexpectedly overtaken by birthday sparkles.

My own birthday was a few days away yet but Keri and I are supposed to be the same age.

I guess I must have inhaled some of that ambrosia or something!

Keri was a little shocked by her abrupt transformation to adulthood, but not shocked enough to overlook a parenting moment.

And she took Lacey to task for her late arrival home, saying, "I know you're a teenager now, Lacey, but along with more freedom comes more responsibility. If you're not coming home straight after school, you need to call and let us know your plans. And find out if they fit in with ours. You almost missed getting to say goodbye to your grandparents and welcoming your new kitten home."

Lacey seemed genuinely contrite about the oversight, asking, "Can I explain while I eat something? I was so caught up in all my activities that I forgot about dinner and now I'm starving!"

As Lacey dug into her Firecracker Shrimp, she told us about her day.

"Well, it all started when they handed out science projects for homework. Mine was to collect 3 pieces of metal and 3 gemstones. And we had to actually find them ourselves, not just re-use ones that others had collected. But they gave us maps with possible locations so I started looking over my list as soon as the bell rang. There were a few close by the school and then others on the way home. I got so carried away as I found each one, I just kept on going."

"By the time I finished, I wasn't far from home, just down past Mick's, and that's when I got an urge to try karaoke. It was a good time too as it was so early Mick's was empty except for the proprietor and the mixologist."

I interrupted asking, "And you actually sang, all by yourself?"

"Well, I was a little embarrassed at first and just stood there singing softly along with the prompts."

"But then I really got into it and had so much fun! I can see why Terrin likes performing, even without an audience it's a real kick! I enjoyed it so much I was thinking I might take music classes like Terrin did, or maybe drama. I've already signed up for Junior Explorers because I like finding stuff, so I'll have to see when the other clubs meet."

"So why didn't you come home after you were finished with karaoke or at least call and tell us where you were?"

"Well, I'd planned on leaving right after singing, but then one of my classmates showed up and asked if I wanted to play pool. That was so much fun that we kept chatting and playing game after game. I totally lost track of the time and was shocked when the mixologist said it was almost curfew! I was just stepping onto the porch when the curfew bell rang! I doubt my friend made it home before that since she lives in town. I hope she didn't get caught and brought home in a patrol car. We weren't doing anything wrong, just hanging out and playing pool!"

Keri and I shared a parental look and I nodded, so Keri said, "We'll let you off with a warning this time, Lacey. But if it happens again, there will be consequences. It's late, so right after you finish your dinner, you should head off to bed."

Lacey nodded, looking relieved that she hadn't been grounded, and dug into her shrimp again with relish.

"This tastes amazing, Dad! You'll have to teach me your recipe before I move out on my own!"

My heart lurched that Lacey was even thinking about moving out on her own at her young age.

She'd just become a teen!

But before I could put my reaction into words, Terrin told us all about his day.

"I talked to the proprietor at the park, and even with snow on the ground, they still host Simfests. But I don't have enough experience to perform in one yet."

"But she was so thrilled by my audition she signed me up as a sing-a-gram performer on the spot! She told me that being a PlantSim I'd be quite the draw for audiences, and that I had a lot of raw talent. I just need some experience performing before an audience, which is the same thing Grandma Brooke told me. She had me choose a stage name too, so now you're looking at AP's newest performer, Terrin Tempo!"

"So I got right to it and started performing for tips. At first, there was only a fairy watching and listening to me."

"But, before long, the girl that had been checking out the stage joined the fairy. And then two more sims showed up and when I was finished, they all liked the song I was singing enough to throw some tips into my jar!"

"Then I actually got my first gig performing a sing-a-gram! It was for Aerin Gallo as he was graduating soon, so his parents, Ariel and Evan Gallo, thought a sing-a-gram would be the perfect present! Though maybe they were just doing that to help me out. I felt a little foolish bursting into song like that and doing the silly dance routine, but Aerin really liked it and it drew a small crowd!"

"So I started performing for tips again and that's when Kamaya strolled in and gave me a huge smile and said, 'Sounding good, cuz! I can see why this is the hot spot tonight, none of the clubs in town have live music!' Since we were in the art gallery, the crowd laughed but everyone hung around until I finished my song and I got a few more tips."

"Just as I finished my song, Keanu came in and seemed disappointed he'd missed it, so I told him duty called and I had another sing-a-gram to deliver but I'd definitely let him know the next time I was performing."

"So off I went to the firehouse, where my sing-a-gram recipient was Ian Kindle, Grandpa Leonard's, nephew."

The fire house was staffed with a full crew, so I would have loved to perform for tips again, but it was late. Besides, most of them seemed more interested in Uncle Jeffery than in my sing-a-gram! But if I go there again for a gig and find a crowd, I'll certainly try to steal some of that attention and hopefully more tips!"

Keri and I congratulated Terrin on a productive first day as a singer and we headed off to bed for some well-deserved sleep.

Mom and Dad's new place is pretty sweet, homey and comfortable with lots of activities, both inside and out.

Lacey's on probation for not letting us know where she was and almost breaking curfew.

Then she gave me a heart attack when she casually mentioned moving out, but I'm not even going to think about that!

And the family celebrity, Terrin Tempo, had quite the first day on the job; performing two sing-a-grams and singing for tips twice, all earning him a bit of money, so now he can call himself a professional.

*Author's note: This build, called Fabu, is courtesy of a joint effort, the lot being built by Anushka and the house built and furnished by MrsFlynn. I did add a few items to reflect the number of sims that might end up living in the home, as well as re-arranging the seating in the living room and dining area to support a crowd, but I did my best to keep them inline with the original furnishings. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful build!

Entry 206: Goals and Greetings
« Reply #268 on: June 10, 2022, 05:39:15 AM »

Even after his busy day, Terrin was so pumped from performing that he finished another painting.

One that was so beautiful we were all awestruck, even Terrin!

The portrait was filled with light reflecting off the wall and the woman's white silk gown, with the woman herself turned away her head tilted down, and though you couldn't see what she was focused on, her posture was one of love and serenity.

Maybe a mother gazing at her child?

"Something you're trying to tell us Terrin!?!"

Terrin was silent for several moments as he studied the painting, then he spoke slowly, "Not that I'm aware of Dad. The paint just flew off of my brush after Mom hugged me. But I'm not sure what it means…"

I wasn't sure either, but it had me wondering if Keri was keeping a secret!

But when I found her eagerly mixing chemicals to discover another potion, I knew she couldn't be expecting as she'd never expose our child to such things.

Besides, she'd never keep something like that from me.

So not expecting, but maybe she wanted another child?

I didn't interrupt her to ask since it was such delicate work and prone to exploding, but I knew a serious conversation needed to take place soon.

And that would give me time to figure out how I felt on the subject!

Morning dawned clear and cold, with Joran eagerly taking up his farm duties by collecting the eggs.

Then he played with the chicks that had hatched.

And even topped off the feed box!

He's quite the little farm hand already!

Done with his morning chores, Joran came inside and scarfed down a muffin.

Lacey and I smiled as he told us all about the new baby chicks, but we didn't comment as we were both reading.

Me, a recipe, of course, while Lacey was doing some extracurricular reading to boost her grades.

I left the kids to finish getting ready for school and headed out to the cows.

I gave Max  a cheery morning greeting as he was heading inside as I was going out.

I milked old Betsy who was her usual cooperative self.

To show my appreciation, I fed her a handful of sweet berries from our last harvest.

With the cold weather and the main garden dormant for the season, I engaged Betsy in a game of tic-tac-hoof!

We're both experts at the game, so it ended in a tie.

But I'll keep that little tidbit just between me and this journal!

Terrin's day was not so laid back.

It started off easily enough as he watched a magician's act at Performance Park.

He seemed pretty excited about the show though he was the only spectator.

Which is why he was the one chosen to be her assistant!

Even with no audience, the two of them gave it there all, hamming it up to the hilt!

Unfortunately, instead of making Terrin disappear, her whole stage set vanished!

Leaving Terrin staring up in bewilderment as the magician went on with the show, sliding sharpened swords into a box that wasn't there!

But she was a professional until the end and took her bow.

Terrin wasn't as calm and seemed concerned as to what this might do for his image!

But he didn't have much time to worry about it as he got another gig for a sing-a-gram.

At the firehouse again.

This time for Cousin Deena, who smiled wide throughout his entire performance!

With a captive audience at hand, Terrin then performed for tips.

It might have been because he's a relative, but after listening for a bit, Jeffery gave Terrin a nod of approval!

So did one of the other fire fighters.

A young blonde woman who not only appreciated Terrin's performance, but seemed quite taken with Terrin himself.

Terrin was flattered and sang a few lines of the song directly to her.

Which ramped up his celebrity status even more!

The boy's really learning how to play to a crowd.

Word must have been flying around town about Terrin's success as when Joran got home from school he raced into the house, homework in hand, begging Keri to help him earn an 'A', to be worthy of his celebrity brother!

Keri quickly agreed to help him but had to add some motherly advice, "Getting good grades should be something you do for yourself Joran, not to please others. You know Terrin loves you for you and would consider you worthy just because you're his brother."

"I know Mom, but just listen to this song he sang today! It's got such a catchy tune! Everyone at school was singing it and passing it on. Terrin's going to be an even bigger star than Aunt Catrice, and I want him to be as proud of me as I am of him!"

Listening to Terrin's latest song, Keri's said, "He sounds amazing! But I'm just as proud of you Joran for being such a good brother and believing in him so much. Now let's get to work!"

I wasn't doing anything nearly as ambitious as my sons, just catching up on another fish bait book.

I'd thought I'd read them all, but I kept finding ones I'd missed.

And thinking about fish kept me from dwelling on Lacey and her worry over a date for prom.

But sometimes fate steps in just when you least expect it.

Because a new family had moved to town!

Into the house next door, in fact, so Lacey had been asked to bring a welcome pack to the newest teen enrolled at Crestview High.

Lacey had drama club after school so it was late afternoon before we got to meet them.

Yes, we!

What kind of father would I be not to escort my newly turned teenage daughter to meet an unknown family!?!

At our knock a dark-haired woman invited us in and gushed to Lacey, "I'm Lily Lum! We'd heard that country towns were friendly but it's so nice to find out first hand that it's true! My husband Theodore is in town getting groceries, but I'll get Lawrence and you two can chat!"

And chat they did!

Lawrence never took his eyes off Lacey from the moment she introduced herself.

And the way Lacey was hanging on to Lawrence's every word, it was easy to see that she was just as interested in her new classmate!

Lily shot me a knowing look from across the room and smiled as the teens conversation grew more and more animated.

Lily let them converse for another 15 minutes, then, with a glance at the clock, she interrupted and insisted Lawrence say goodbye and finish his unpacking.

Lawrence dutifully headed off to do his mother's bidding, saying, "It was great meeting you Lacey! My first day of school will be much easier with this information! I'll see you on the bus."

Lily watched her son leave, adding, "Thanks for the warm welcome. I hope Theo gets back with those groceries soon, I'm starving! A quick dinner and a bit more unpacking and we'll all be ready for bed. Moving is exhausting!"

We took the hint and said our goodbyes.

I still haven't broached the subject of another child with Keri, but it's on my 'to do' list.

Terrin's becoming more skilled with his painting and his singing.

While Joran is focusing on his farm chores and improving his grades.

And we've met two members of the Lum family, our new neighbors, Lily and her teen son, Lawrence.

If their first meeting was anything to go by, I have a feeling we're going to be seeing a lot of Lawrence!

For once, my prediction was right

Well, almost right.

We weren't seeing much of Lawrence, but Lacey was!

She either got off the bus at his house or raced down the road after drama club.

They had several classes together and, though Lacey insisted they were spending most of their time discussing class work, it was clear that she was thrilled to be spending time with an unrelated boy.

Their time together after school grew longer and longer.

First, it was Lacey accepting Lawrence's invitation to stay to dinner.

"If you're sure there's enough, I'd love to stay for dinner, Lawrence."

"There's plenty! Mom's thrilled will all those fresh veggies you bring over. She's amazed you can get anything to grow in temperatures this cold."

"Oh, we have a nectary garden in the basement and Dad always keeps fresh produce growing all through the cold season. I'll give him a quick call to let him know I'll be here a bit longer."

Then Lacey showed Lawrence a photo of Elwood and they bonded over their shared love of cats!

They discussed their dreams for the future and careers they were thinking of.

"I was thinking I might like to go into acting or maybe even singing, like my brother Terrin. But I haven't really made up my mind yet. What about you? Any career plans yet?"

"School work comes easy for me but I'm not a computer geek like my dad, though I do like meeting new people like he does. And I don't have any problem speaking with others, so I was thinking maybe something in business, education, or maybe even politics."

Then things got more serious.

Lacey asked, "Is there someone back in the city you're close with Lawrence? Someone who's more than a friend?"

"No. I just had my birthday before we moved here, so no one special. In fact, you're the first close friend I've had that's a girl…"

Lacey came home walking on air and decided to share her feelings with her own special friend.

"I've been over to his house every day this week and he told me he doesn't have anyone special back in the city. I'm the first close friend he's ever had that's a girl!"

Though Joran couldn't see who Lacey was talking to, he heard ever word!

And so did I as I was standing outside grilling on the back porch!

So it wasn't much of a surprise when Lacey invited Lawrence over the next evening.

Terrin answered the door as he was heading out to perform for tips and Lawrence was in such awe at meeting him, he asked for his autograph first thing.

Terrin happily provided it, signing his name with a flourish.

And the two of them became instant friends!

But Lacey came out right after and quickly said, "I'm so glad you could come over Lawrence."

"You said it was urgent! Are you having a problem with your homework?"

Lacey shut the door and said, "No. All the help you've given me has made schoolwork easy. In fact, I wanted to thank you for that."

"Thank me?"

"Yes, thank you."

And that's when I opened the front door and saw my daughter's first kiss!

I shut the door without saying a word.

But it didn't really matter because Lacey and Lawrence only had eyes for each other.

I ended up going out the back door as I was heading to the Festival Park to catch Terrin's new act.

His first performance as a Sing-A-Gram Pro!

Boy can he belt out a song now!

He made some decent tip money and we headed home.

In the truck he told me that he'd been practicing a new song that morning.

"When I finished, Mom said I really needed to check back with the proprietor of Performance Park as I was bound to get a gig now that I was at level 2."

"So I followed Mom's advice, and after my audition, the proprietor clapped enthusiastically and gave me my first gig!"

"That's great Terrin! You know we'll all be there, cheering you on! Oh, maybe not all of us…your sister may have other plans…"

Terrin grinned and said, "I met Lawrence on my way out tonight. He seems like a nice kid."

I grimaced and said, "He better be! Your sister kissed him earlier tonight but I had to leave so I've no idea what happened after that!"

Once we pulled in the drive, it was pretty obvious what happened as Lacey and Lawrence were all cuddled together watching the stars on the front porch.

They didn't even pay any attention to us.

But I can't blame them really, what teen would care about their father or brother when they've just had their first kiss and are on their first date!?!

Terrin didn't even bother to change out of his new performance outfit, just started another painting to express his feelings.

Just seeing all those explosions of color, I knew it was going to be another brilliant one.

I was tired but I wasn't going to bed with Lacey still on the front porch with Lawrence.

So I settled down on the couch with a book, a new recipe.

At first I just fidgeted with the book in my hand, a bit uncomfortable since I could see the teens outside the window.

But then I determinedly opened to the first page and was soon caught up in another recipe.

Giving my daughter a bit of privacy, but still feeling in control of the situation.

For now, at least!

Lacey's had her first kiss and her first date!

Terrin's gotten his first promotion and his first gig!

Things are moving pretty fast here in sleepy little Appaloosa Plains!

With all that going on, dare I broach the subject of having another child with Keri?

What if she really wants one!?!

I know she's perfectly capable of raising another child, but am I!?!

Like most things in life, only time will tell.
