Entry 181: Sunday Socializing
« Reply #240 on: November 02, 2021, 04:45:32 PM »

Terrin was up bright and early Sunday morning and started working on his skills right away.

I'm sure Josh, the family's only true artist, wouldn't think much of it, but the stick figures made me smile.

Besides, you've got to start somewhere, and to my mind it was the effort that counted the most.

Especially since Terrin had actually wanted to start learning more about music, only to discover that his new virtuoso trait wasn't much use at his young age.

With his painting completed, he went into the nursery and chatted away with ghostly Grandpa Leonard, who's actually his Great-Grandfather, but I'm so used to calling him Grandpa Leonard, I'm sticking with that title.

And with Terrin being such a friendly kid, he and Grandpa were friends in no time!

Having added to his skills and made a new friend, he rewarded himself with some playtime in the treehouse.

Hopefully he doesn't see anything he shouldn't using that telescope!

Since it was a weekend, he called Keanu and invited him over, reluctantly inviting Kamaya too.

But, oddly enough, he ended up chatting with her more than Keanu.

Discovering that Kamaya was really easy to talk to, despite being a girl!

Though that may have been because she was so excited about Terrin's celebrity status as the one and only PlantSim in town, she eager listened to his every word!

Which left Keanu chatting with Mom about the weather, asking, "So do you think it's going to turn cold again or be an early Spring Grammie? Dad's hoping it keeps getting warmer, but I wanted it to get cold enough to snow again so I could build a snowman!"

Mom shook her head not happy to disappoint him, saying, "I'm afraid winter's over Keanu. But being a gardener with all his gardens outside, I can see why your Dad would be happy about that. But on the bright side, you and Terrin could play in the tree house, even sleep up there in warmer weather."

Dejectedly Keanu said, "If Kamaya wasn't hogging Terrin all to herself! She always tries to steal my friends!"

"Now, I doubt that's intentional, sweetie. She's just being nice."

"She's not, Grammie, she takes my stuff too! And Mom is always having to remind her to take a bath and pick up her clothes. She gets in trouble all the time because her room is such a mess!"

Mom's face went a little stony, hearing that bit of news, and I had a feeling Kamaya was going to be on the receiving end of a lecture soon.

It wasn't very nice, but I was glad it was her and not me!

But all that flew out of my head when I completed my next culinary masterpiece, Dad and Jeffery's favorite, tri-tip steak!

I even sprinkled it with herbs to kick it up a notch.

With that recipe and meal completed, I only had two more family favorite's to go, Grandpa Leonard and Josh' Vegetarian Dim Sum and Bella's Vegetarian Lobster Thermidor, but those required level 9 and 10 cooking skill and I wasn't quite to that level yet.

Of course, Mia and Anoki had already moved out when I'd set that goal so, to be fair, I should probably make their favorites too.

I'll have to ask them what they like the next time I see them.

But right this moment I was going to indulge in my own favorite, the perfect grilled salmon that I'd cooked Friday night.

It looked so amazing, I clapped in delight at the expectation of my treat.

Then I chatted with Keanu to get to know my nephew a little better.

First thing we talked about was my favorite color, mostly because he asked why I was wearing pink!

I excitedly explained that violet wasn't pink but a rich blend of purple and reds…

When Keanu stubbornly insisted that it still looked girly, Keri, who was practicing chess moves nearby, couldn't hold back a giggle and said, "He's got you there, Scott! Violet looks like a deep pink to me too."

Keanu gloated, "See I told it was pink!"

I blushed, staining my cheeks a true pink, but Keri winked at me, saying, "Don't worry about it Scott, you pull it off well with your dark good looks! Real men CAN wear pink!"

Thankfully, Terrin had invited a couple more kids over and I was saved from even more embarrassment when they arrived.

One of them was a young boy, Noah Cook, who was wearing a cowboy hat, typical for Appaloosa Plains.

But instead of just friendly chatter, I realized he was spreading gossip!

"I saw a maid getting really cozy with one of your neighbors when I delivered their paper today!"

Terrin was listening much too avidly, so I quickly interrupted with, "Terrin, I think your other friends are calling you from the tree house. You should be polite and all go play together!"

That had Terrin forgetting all about gossip, racing outside and looking up into the treehouse, focused on a bright pink glow!

Another boy, Giovanni Joiner, was standing with Terrin as he shouted, "Halloo up there! Are you tired? It's okay to sleep up there if you are."

The child stepped out to the treehouse balcony and settled onto the floor.

With the Watcher Lady's assistance, I found out that the child was actually a girl and the pink glow was coming from her sparkling fairy wings!

In a piping voice she responded, "I'm not tired, but I am thirsty. Do you have any soda pop? Or better yet, fairy pollen juice? It's my favorite!"

Terrin repeated in amazement, "Fairy pollen juice? Does that mean you're a fairy!?!"

The fairy girl replied, "Yes, of course, silly, what else could I be with these pink wings?"

Terrin said thoughtfully, "I don't know. I've never met anyone with wings before. But I just had my child birthday and I'm a PlantSim, from the earth, so I guess there COULD be other beings with wings."

"You're a PlantSim!?! Well, that makes your confusion more understandable! Come on up, bring your friends too. A treehouse is more fun with other kids."

Terrin hesitated for only a moment and then said, "I'll be back in a minute. We don't have any soda pop or fairy pollen juice, but we have regular juice…"

The girl let out a soft sigh, "I guess that'll have to do…"

I wasn't sure about leaving Keri home with Terrin and a bunch of school age kids, especially one that was a fairy who drank pollen juice, but Keri insisted she'd be fine, so off I went with Mom and Dad.

Over to Mia and Anoki's house as their youngest twins, Leo and Joy, had just become toddlers!

Dad picked up Leo and said, "Well, that's a surprising turn of genetics! This young man was named after Dad but he got the Swanson red hair, while his twin got Dad's dark hair!"

Mom, snuggling Joy, added, "You never know how genetics are going to play out! Though it's more likely this little miss has her father's dark hair!"

Mom insisted on trips to the mirror for both of them, so we indulged her.

And in the bright light, Leo did indeed have the Swanson red hair, just like his mother, Mia.

But he'd also inherited Dad's bushy eyebrows!

And so did little Joy!

But in all fairness, like Mom said, Joy's eyebrows and dark coloring could have come from Anoki's Island roots.

Her nose even looked wider than Leo's, an indication, even at this young age, that she'd probably look more like her Island ancestors.

Just look at the adoring gaze she gave us.

She's the sweetest little thing!

Kamaya arrived home right about then and Mia said sharply, "Don't forget to take a shower or a bath, you have school tomorrow! And remember to pick up your dirty clothes and put them in the hamper, young lady! I've already picked up the clothes you left on the floor twice today!"

Kamaya took her mothers' scolding in stride, saying, "I'll do my best, Mom. You know I really don't care about stuff like that!"

"Care or not, you are a Swanson and we have a reputation to uphold."

Puzzled Kamaya said, "Actually I'm a Moon, Mom. We all are."

Mia frowned and asked, "What have you been told about talking back to your elders? We've already had one parent-teacher conference about that!"

"Um, not to?"

"Not to, what?"

"Oh, not to, ma'am! Sorry, I forgot that part!"

Shaking her head in frustration Mia added, "Please try and remember that at school tomorrow. Now go and get ready for bed. And remember to brush your teeth too!"

Kamaya quickly replied, "Yes ma'am," and beamed as she added, "See? I remembered that time!"

Mom gazed after Kamaya and I knew she was remembering her earlier conversation with Keanu.

With all of us witnessing the interchange between Mia and her young daughter, it was more than obvious that Keanu hadn't been exaggerating about his sister's concern for cleanliness at all.

And if that part was true, could she also be responsible for stealing Keanu's toys as well?

Dad's eyes showed he was concerned with Kamaya's attitude as well.

But when Leo put his head down on Dad's shoulder, we all realized it was late and the kids needed to get some sleep.

Mia got Leo tucked in on his sleeping mat.

And before she even said, "Sweet Dreams," he was fast asleep.

Before we headed home, Mia had one more surprise for us.

Farley was all grown up!

And he was mostly black except for one white sock and a pure white tail, stylishly braided.

Truly a handsome piece of horse flesh!

Seeing him with Fareshine, you could tell they had a close relationship too.

Terrin's dabbled with painting and he's making new friends.

Most notably his cousin, Kamaya, who has some habits that we'd rather not have Terrin pick up.

And a fairy girl with pink wings with a fondness for fairy pollen juice!

I'd thought dealing with toddler tantrums was a big deal and he'd only ever had one!

Now it's making sure has proper friends and helping him to get good grades in school.

And he hasn't even gone to school yet!

Boy am I glad I'm not a single Dad anymore, I'm going to need Keri's help more than ever.

Entry 182: Love Day and A Crisis
« Reply #241 on: November 08, 2021, 10:51:55 AM »
Terrin wanted to impress his teacher, so early the next morning, before school, he asked Keri to tutor him.

I'm not sure why they chose to do so almost inside that hydrangea bush, but Keri's a genius so I'm not going to question her tutoring methods.

But as it turned out, Monday was holiday, Love Day in fact, and Bella threw a pool party.

It wasn't really warm enough to swim and Bella and Jeffery didn't have a pool anyway.

But Terrin's flower trail certainly caught the eye of the guests following him!

Keri headed for the chess table to get in some practice.

And since it was on the balcony she got to enjoy the sunshine too.

Mom made a beeline for her youngest granddaughter, Jasmine, playing with her as she waved her arms and cooed.

Bella was teaching Terrin a song she learned in China and he was listening with rapt attention.

Dad fed Jordan a bottle, while my cousin Brianna shot a wary look across the room.

A few moments later I discovered why as a grown up Sassy joined the crowd.

Mom had picked up Jeremy by this time, trying to give all her grandchildren some attention, and Jeremy seemed to be looking at Sassy a bit worriedly as well.

That wasn't surprising as it was hard to believe that this huge dog was the same tiny puppy that Bella had brought to The Old Mill!

To Jeremy I'm sure Sassy looked like a giant, especially when he was on the floor.

We spent the whole day hanging out at Bella's relaxing and catching up with family and friends.

Terrin even wandered out to the balcony to check out the chess table with his flower trail almost glowing in the dark.

Dad was encouraging James to take a few steps towards him, but the poor little guy looked too frightened to even take a step.

But Dad kept at it and pretty soon James ways toddling towards him, surprising himself as he took one step after another into Dad's waiting arms!

Mom was busy too, teaching Jeremy to talk.

And that little guy knew all about smoke alarms as he shouted, "Fire, fire!"

I think he'll be following in his daddy's footsteps when he grows up.

Unless he's just inherited Great-Grandpa Dean's penchant for fires…

When Jeremy just as enthusiastically repeated, "Doctor, doctor," I figured out that Mom was telling him what his parents jobs were.

But only time will tell what career he'll decide on when he grows up.

Terrin had persuaded Keri to play chess even though it was almost too dark to see the board.

But Keri was just glad to have someone eager to learn the game, saying, "We should play chess together at home too. It'll build up your logic skill just like tutoring does."

"Will it improve my grade in school?"

"Not directly, only doing homework, attending class, and tutoring helps with grades. But sometimes you can get extra credit projects from teachers to improve grades. You can ask about that at school tomorrow."

Where was I during all this?

Well, when I wasn't chatting and taking photos, I listened to a cooking tab cast and read another recipe book.

And managed to max cooking!

So now I can even prepare complicated level 10 meals; I just need to learn all the recipes for them!

Lobster Thermidor, here I come.

Oh, I better make that Vegetarian Lobster Thermidor since that's Bella's favorite.

Since the sky's the limit, why not both!?!

When I went back downstairs, Mom had started teaching Jeremy to walk.

He looked a little wobbly at first.

But he managed to make it to Mom, and flung himself into her waiting arms.

Dad had given James' little legs a break and they were sitting down now as Dad taught him a few words.

And when James said, "Fishy, fishy," Dad beamed at the the though of having another fishing buddy!

But the toddlers conked out on their sleeping mats soon after.

So Keri, Terrin, and I headed home, while Mom and Dad said their goodbyes.

Tuesday morning Terrin headed off to school with a smile on his face, leaving a trail of flowers in his wake.

He didn't seem nervous or worried about his first day at all.

But I followed discreetly behind the bus anyway, until he was heading inside.

His trail of flowers causing one of the teachers and the coach to share a startled look.

I'm not surprised as, though Appaloosa Plains has quite a few other occults, most of them hybrids, Terrin's the first PlantSim.

And with his leafy hair and green skin covered with vines and leaves, along with flowers trailing behind him, there was no hiding that he was different.

Not that I wanted to hide it, I was truly proud of him!

First BECAUSE he was the very first Plantsim in our town, a crowning achievement for a gardening family!

But mostly because he was my son and I loved him.

And seeing him head off inside so confidently, I heaved a sigh of relief and headed home.

But my young son was definitely worried about something when he got home from school that afternoon.

His voice broke as he said, "Dad…I think something's wrong with me…"

Keri and I froze, and thoughts of bullies and thoughtless teachers flew through my head.

If anyone had been mean to our son, even unkind…

"What happened today, Terrin? Was someone mean to you?"

"Oh, no, everyone was nice, the kids, the teachers and the morning went fine. It was at lunchtime that I got scared…"

With a sigh of relief I said, "Oh, I explained to the principal and your teachers that you don't have to eat or use the bathroom due to your unique physiology. So there's no need to think something's wrong with you…"

"That's just it Dad! I was starving at lunchtime! And before the dismissal bell rang, I had to ask to use the restroom, twice!"

Keri and I just stood there in shock, but our lack of response had Terrin's voice raising to a panicked high pitch as he added, "What's wrong with me, Dad!?!"

Keri quickly jumped in and said, "Your hair, skin, and flower trail all point to you being a PlantSim, Terrin, so there has to be a reasonable explanation for your hunger and bladder needs. Your Dad and I will do some research and see what steps we need to take to resolve those issues."

Terrin was so relieved by Keri's calm, sensible words that he pulled out his multi-tab and said,  "Oh, that makes sense, Mom! I'll just do my homework while you and Dad take care of it."

With Terrin focused on his homework, I shot Keri a look, but when she shrugged and scratched her head, I knew she was just as perplexed as I was!

Then things went from bad to worse!

With his homework complete, Terrin was playing with is IF doll, Lucky, a toy he'd played with occasionally throughout his toddlerhood.

And now being a child, he could not only sing to it, he could have a tea party with it.

But when he sat the doll on the floor, Lucky froze into an awkward looking position.

When Terrin came back with juice for the tea party, and bowed formally to Lucky, the doll stayed frozen.

Though Terrin's tea party wish completed, it was then that he noticed his friend hadn't moved since he'd set him down.

Frowning, Terrin walked over and tried to pick up his friend, and the doll vanished!

Poor Lucky wasn't very lucky at all!

Bella, Jeffery, and their two sets of twins are all doing well.

And we really enjoyed getting to spend Love Day with them.

But it's our family that's having a crisis, two of them actually!

Terrin's IF doll, Lucky, mysteriously disappeared, which isn't a real biggy as far as I'm concerned, as we've had issues with them in the family previously, but losing his friend left Terrin feeling sad.

What's worse, as a PlantSim Terrin shouldn't be experiencing hunger and bladder needs!

To stop Terrin from worrying about it, Keri told him there was a reasonable explanation for it and that we'd do some research and find out what it was.

So now Keri, Mom, and Dad, and I are frantically searching Simnet for answers!

Worrying about Terrin's friends and grades now seems unimportant when his PlantSim existence could be at stake!

Entry 183: Suffering in Silence
« Reply #242 on: November 12, 2021, 01:35:51 PM »

Over the next couple of days, Terrin acted like a typical kid.

Playing on his spring rider.

Inviting his cousins, Kamaya and Keanu, over after school.

As well as the fairy girl, Jamie Cotton.

Playing and making friends just like any other boy.

Including pillow fighting with Mom out in the garden after dark, which seemed so out of character for my proper mother.

They were having so much fun, doing their best to act like everything was fine, that I didn't interrupt them.

I stood close by though, using the excuse that I was checking on plants as I kept a watchful eye on Terrin.

Keeping my worries for my young son to myself.

He even joined an after school activity, not scouting, but music club, a very normal desire for a budding virtuoso.

When I picked him up after school his face lit up as he said, "Music Club is great, Dad, even though we can't play any instruments yet, we get to listen to all different genres of music."

Proudly he added, "That's a word we learned in club today and we've already listened to pop and classical. But we'll get to listen to a lot more; disco, songwriter, R&B, western, even Geek Rock, which is my favorite!"

I smiled at his enthusiasm and said, "I'm glad you had fun, son! There's something special about learning and participating in a favorite subject or hobby."

But throughout all those normal activities, Terrin was still having hunger and bladder issues.

Having to use the bathroom frequently, just like the rest of us.

And in the morning, he was starving when he woke up.

I really enjoyed cooking for him, introducing him to Keri's favorite, pancakes, and sharing meals together.

But despite my smile I was very worried about his condition.

Especially since all our research hadn't given us a clue into what could be causing such issues!

Everything I'd read about PlantSims stated that they had no hunger and bladder needs, none.

When one book mentioned that PlantSims could actually photosynthesize in sunshine, tunneling into the ground to absorb water and nutrients as well as fulfill their energy needs, my hopes rose!

Only to be dashed when it added that this phenomenon only occurred once the PlantSim had reached puberty.

Since Terrin was still a child, he couldn't even try it.

On a more positive note, he only had a few more days before his teen birthday.

So we decided to see if aging up would resolve the issues and restore Terrin to his full PlantSim self.

With Terrin's PlantSim issues tabled for now, I went visiting with Mom.

I hadn't realized just how oblivious I'd been to anything else until Catrice answered the door.

Her twins Shawn and Shayna were already toddlers!

And her cats, Ilia and Budge, had three kittens, all female!

Ilia was a great mother, nuzzling little Baby, the runt of the litter.

Inside, Baby's litter mates were playing together with Catrice's obvious approval.

Honey was a calico with coloring like Baby and her mother, Ilia.

Poppy looked just like Budge but she had one small brown spot instead of being completely black.

Mom insisted on formal photos for the twins.

And boy were they cute!

Shawn taking after Catrice with his green IF hair.

Shayna looking adorable with Josh's dark hair.

And they had a little brother, Dirk!

Since the twins were busy playing with their toys, Mom gave Dirk a cuddle.

Then the cats and one of the kittens came into the nursery to check Mom out.

Ilia marking Mom, despite the scent of dog all over her, or maybe because of it!

Then Mom picked up Shayna for some tickles.

And little Shawn got his share of attention too.

The enjoyment of seeing Catrice, her kids, and pets, turned out to only be a momentary diversion.

Because back at the house, I found Terrin and Noah eating dinner at the kitchen table.

Seeing Terrin digging into his mac & cheese with such gusto had his hunger issue hitting me full force, like I'd been hit with a sledgehammer!

Then Terrin paused before taking his next bite, saying, "Thanks for making this mac & cheese, Dad! It's my favorite!"

I gulped and tried to sound cheerful as I said, "You're welcome, Terrin."

But the truth was that his words left me more terrified than ever.

As a PlantSim, Terrin shouldn't have a favorite food; he shouldn't need to eat at all!

After dinner, the boys ran outside to play in the treehouse.

Giving me the perfect opportunity to follow one more lead.

The Elixir store!

But my hopes were dashed again when the consignment specialist said, "We sometimes do get a Potent Cure Elixir that can cure occults, Scott. But that removes whatever occult they are completely, it doesn't fix any issues they may be having with their occult genetics. And though we carry elixirs that can make different occults, I've never heard of one that makes someone a PlantSim. I don't know a lot about them, but I believe PlantSims are more scientific than magical. Have you checked with Wolfson's Hospital and Research Facility? Maybe they can help your son?"

Of course, why hadn't we thought of that before!?!

Both Bella and Anoki worked at Wolfson's!

And Bella had studied science at Uni, being the one to actually discover Forbidden Fruits via gene-spicing using the Science Station.

I called both Bella and Anoki and they told me they'd look into it and let me know what they found out, ASAP.

Neither one of them was kidding when they said that as when I got home, I found Dad chatting with Kamaya, who'd just become a teen.

"Thanks for bringing over the science and medical information so quickly, sweetie. We're really anxious to find out what's going on with Terrin and nip it in the bud!"

Kamaya grinned, "In the bud, Grandpa!?! That's funny with Terrin being a PlantSim!"

But after reading through all the information, none of us felt like smiling.

According to Bella's information, you could gene-splice Forbidden Fruits using the Science Station and you could make a PlantSim Cure, Super Spice with it as well.

And the pamphlet from the Research Facility that Anoki provided offered to cure PlantSims for $3000 simoleans.

Cures, cures, and more cures, both magical and scientific, but no way to fix Terrin's hunger and bladder issues!

Every avenue we explored came up a dead end!

Seeing our dismay, Kamaya declared, "Maybe the hospital or research facility has an experimental drug that might work on Terrin, Grandpa? I could sneak in and swipe some for you! I'm pretty good at that. So good I got a part-time job in the delinquent field as a shoplifter and my goal is to be a Master Thief!"

We just stared at Kamaya and then I gulped and managed to splutter, "Thanks for the offer, but we'll keep trying other avenues. Safer ones."

We didn't say it out loud but I knew Dad and I were on the same page there, safer not just for Terrin but for Kamaya too, having those Dean pyro tendencies was bad enough, no need to add thievery into the mix!

Since we'd struck out at the Elixir store, and with both Science and Medicine, with none of us willing to take Kamaya up on her offer, Mom decided to check on the web one more time.

While I did what I always do in a crisis, cook.

This time making more macaroni and cheese for Terrin as it looks like he'll need to eat for the foreseeable future.

Terrin's acting like a normal kid, totally confident that the adults in his life will be able to fix whatever's going on with him.

Being one of those adults and being frustrated at every turn, yet having to put a good face on it, has me spinning!

Along with Keri, and Mom and Dad, especially as we're all worried about Kamaya's talent and career choice!

After Keri and I got married, I really wasn't expecting a literal happily ever after.

Life's just not like that, it's full of highs and lows, ups and downs, and everything in between.

But the way things have been going it's like we're in one of Grimm's Fairy Tales, spiraling down and down and down!

« Reply #243 on: November 29, 2021, 02:36:28 PM »

But things weren't actually all bad.

When Kamaya got home that night, she found most of her family standing at the end of their driveway.

Her father was focused on his garden, which wasn't anything new.

But her mother and brother were excitedly watching three horses as Farley had come home with a pretty mare and a foal!

The mare was a reddish-brown with a white blaze and nose and three white socks.

And the foal, a filly, looked just like Farley!

At first glance anyway, but a closer inspection showed she had patches of her mother's reddish brown, sprinkled along her hind quarters.

So, two more horses live on Moon Farm and Stables, Cinnamon and Paprika!

Mom took up a new hobby, martial arts.

Something else that didn't seem quite proper, not for someone her age anyway.

But after the dressing down I'd gotten over the hover bed incident, I certainly wasn't going to say that out loud.

I was wrong anyway as all that athletic training she'd done over the years, as well as all that grape stomping, made her a natural.

And shortly after taking it up, Mom earned her first belt!

She looked amazing in her martial arts outfit.

And whenever Terrin wasn't busy with homework, friends, or his music club, he found other hobbies to keep him busy.

Like making castles on his blocks table.

And Dad and I being the avid fisherman we are, fishing kept us totally focused as we chatted about bait and types of fish.

Each one of us telling one fish tale after another about our greatest fishing feats.

So, when Keri interrupted my fishing and dragged me out to the garden, I still had fishing on my mind.

Until Keri shouted, "I'm pregnant, Scott, we're having a baby!"

I stood there staring at her in shock and then a big grin spread across my face!

I felt like I was flying on cloud nine!

I pulled her close and said, "That's wonderful news, Keri! The best news I've had in a long time."

A sad note crept into Keri's voice as she whispered, "I know. Ever since Terrin told us…"

"No, we're not going to let anything ruin this moment, Keri. I love you so much and this is the BEST. NEWS. EVER!"

"I'm so glad you're happy about this Scott."

"Happy!?! Happy doesn't begin to describe what I'm feeling right now."

Keri sighed as I grabbed her hand and I whispered, "We're going to be parents, Terrin's going to be a big brother, things are looking up, Keri! This is definitely a sign of good things to come."

Then I spun her around and massaged Keri's back and shoulders.

Keri murmured, "Oh, that feels great, Scott, but it's too early for me to have a backache. I'm barely showing."

"All the more reason for me to start now and get in some practice."

"Scott, if you're not careful, you're going to spoil me."

"If anyone deserves some spoiling it's you, Keri. And since I'm not fishing, gardening, or cooking right now…"

"In that case, spoil away."

Once we told Terrin, the news spread like wild fire.

"I'm going to be a big brother, Grandpa Leonard! I'm so happy. Mom and Dad are happy, Grandpa and Grammie are happy. Everyone's happy!"

"Well, babies and birthdays usually perk everyone up. You should see Founder Brooke's face when she talks about her babies. You're one of them you know, being a Swanson. And she couldn't be prouder knowing you're the first PlantSim in this town, produced right on this farm. She certainly never dreamed that this run down old place, well, not this one, the one back in Aggie's Corner, but anyway, she never dreamed she'd turn it around, raise a huge family, and have that farm grow and grow, being passed on and on, down to your Daddy."

"She didn't? Why not?"

"Well, she was a rich, city girl, pretty spoiled too…and she threw one too many wild parties, which had her daddy shipping her off to Aggie's Corner, to an old run down farm."

Terrin voice was filled with awe as he asked, "Our Founder came from a city!?! With skyscrapers, lights, subways, theaters….and music? Tell me more, Grandpa Leonard!"

"I really don't know much more than that, Terrin. Except for the name, Bridgeport. It's pretty much the only real city in Sim Land. But I've never been there so I can't really describe it. "

"Where have you been Grandpa Leonard?"

"Let's see, I was a child when I was fostered in Aggie's Corner, which is where I met and married your Grandma Rielle. And when our kids were almost grown, we vacationed in Starlight Shores. After that we moved here to Appaloosa Plains,  your Grandpa and Grammie were in high school then, and so was your Aunt Karina."

"High school!?! But they're so old…"

"I wouldn't be saying that to your Grammie or Aunt Karina, or you'll be getting what for young man! It's hard for youth to imagine their elders as young once…"

"But about the city, Bridgeport…"

"Oh, you'll have to ask Founder Brooke about that some time. Turn on a stereo and watch for her some night, she can't resist dancing, even now. Or relaxing in a rocker."

I was still on cloud nine the next morning as I flipped pancakes with a flourish.

I couldn't stop smiling and every time I thought about our coming child, my smile grew bigger.

Keri applauded my efforts too, as she never passes up pancakes.

"Oh, strawberry today! They smell even better than the last ones you made."

As I forked up my last bite, I said, "They taste pretty good too!"

"You ate my pancakes, Scott!?! But your favorite is grilled salmon..."

"Not for breakfast!"

"Good point, and since you keep making them, I won't begrudge you a plate or two."

Later that morning, a real miracle occurred!

I was just about to dispose of a barren plant when I touched it and it started to glow.

I'd been thinking about the miracle of life, our coming child, so I focused really hard on that thought.

The glow got brighter and brighter and what once had been a brown, barren, plant, was lush and growing once more!

Our luck was really changing if I could bring a plant back to life!

That evening Terrin threw a slumber party.

Keanu and James were the first guests and James changed into his pajamas first thing.

Jeremy had been right behind James, but turns out he wasn't quite ready for a sleepover.

He hopped back on his bike and quickly started for home.

Aerin Gallo and Leo Moon showed up next wearing identical light blue pajamas.

Keanu wore the same ones but had the distinction of being the first one to warm his hands by the bonfire.

The bonfire was an irresistible draw for Keri too as she threw more and more wood on it and had the flames raging higher and higher.

Nearby, Mom's ghost story soon had Keanu, Terrin, and Leo completely enthralled.

Just as a couple of the kids snuggled down in sleeping bags, a few more wandered outside.

Joy, who'd apparently been presiding over the royal court.

Noah, wearing the same red pj's as Terrin, along with his cowboy hat!

And a new classmate, Gordon Hamlin, who not only had green pajamas but green wings too!

Mom was concerned about the kids sleeping so close to the bonfire, which now looked like an inferno.

So, Dad settled down in the hot tub to keep an eye on them.

Judging by the V's among all those Z's, a couple of Terrin's classmates are vampires too!

Morning showed that Joy wasn't the lone girl, as Shirley Easter warmed her hands in the bonfire.

Which was still raging, so I guess people had kept feeding it through the night.

Looks like a love of fire runs in more than one Dean family, as we now have it two-fold!

First, from Great-Great Grandpa Nolan who's father, George Dean, lost his mother in a house fire back in Riverview and now from Bella's husband, Jeffery Dean, who's the Fire Chief here in Appaloosa Plains.

As the kids started waking up and heading home, Terrin thanked them for coming to his party.

Even though we hadn't seen much of Joy or Shirley, both girls said they'd had a great time!

When Kamaya arrived to pick up her siblings, Leo and Joy, she chatted politely with Terrin.

"You guys had great weather for a slumber party and that bonfire looks amazing! I'm kind of sorry I was too old to attend!"

Terrin was quick to say, "You don't need a special invitation to visit, Kamaya, you're family!"

"Thanks Terrin, that's so sweet. I wish my siblings were as nice as you!"

"I mean it, Kamaya. Drop in any time. I love hanging out with you!"

Me thinks Terrin has a bit of a crush on his older cousin…

Too bad she wasn't a better role model.

I'll take Terrin's hunger and bladder issues any day over Kamaya's slovenly habits and illegal activities.

But my feet have barely touched the ground since I found out I'm going to be a father again!

It's amazing how you can be in the depths of despair one minute and then in the next, on cloud nine!

I guess what they say is true, 'Every cloud has a silver lining.'

The way I feel right now, I'm walking on clouds of gold!

Entry 185: A Baby and a Teen
« Reply #244 on: December 10, 2021, 11:58:31 AM »
Right after all the kids left, I headed into town to pick up the book Keri had ordered from the library.

I ran into Elise Pelly and remembered her name had been in the paper recently, "Congratulations on your promotion, Elise! I know a lot of people in town were pretty skeptical of a mostly female fire department, but you've all shown them you're all more than capable of handling the job."

After that Elise asked about Max and Lady and I told her how well they had adjusted to life on the farm.

And that Max had puppies of his own now, Razzle and Brooks, with his mate Snaggles.

That led into the goings on in my own life and I proudly told her that Keri and I were going to become parents again.

"Congratulations! When is she due?"

"Soon. In fact, I was here picking up a book for her so I better head home. Take care, Elise."

Little did I know that Terrin was in the kitchen panicking, shouting, "Grammie! Grammie! Do something! I think Mom's having the baby!"

"She is Terrin, but it's a natural occurrence. Nothing to make a fuss about. Just come outside with me and leave her to the task."

Dad wasn't quite as blasé about it when he realized what was going on, waving his arms, jumping around like a crazy man, shouting, "The baby's coming, the baby's coming!"

And by the look on Keri's face in this photo Mom took, Keri wasn't completely sure she could handle this 'natural occurrence' on her own!

That's when Dad decided to call me to tell me that Keri was in labor!

"Um, I'll just step out on the back porch, Keri, so I don't disturb you while I call Scott."

Luckily, I heard Keri's screams as I stepped onto the front porch and I was in the kitchen about 3 seconds later!

Waving my arms and jumping around much like Dad had done earlier, shouting, "Hang on, Keri! I'm here now! I'll get you to the hospital!"

Then, as I realized my phone was ringing, I added, "Who is calling me now!?!"

I tried to ignore it but the ringing was driving every thing I'd learned from that baby book I'd read out of my head!

As Keri's cried got noticeably louder, I yelled into the phone, "What do you want!?! My wife's in labor!"

Only to hear Dad say, "Oh, good, you're home. You can drive Keri to the hospital now."

But it was much too late for that!

I'd barely hung up the phone when Keri was beaming, her face full of love and joy, as in a shower of sparkles, she was holding our daughter!

I was thrilled that we had a little girl, but Keri seemed to be waiting for something else to happen.

When nothing did, she mumbled, "I guess I didn't watch and listen to enough kid's tv or music. I was kind of hoping for twins, a girl for you, a boy for me. Are you disappointed Scott?"

"Disappointed!?! We have a sweet baby girl, who's absolutely perfect. And I have a gorgeous wife. A wife who still has a baby wish, one for a boy; I'm looking forward to all those romantic nights ahead of us making that wish come true!"

Keri smiled in relief and held our newborn daughter up, playing with her as she said, "Did you hear that, Lacey Swanson? You've just arrived and your Daddy wants to make you a big sister!?!"

I smiled and said, "You chose Lacey from our list of names, that was my favorite too!"

Keri nodded, saying, "Since Claire and Tyler named their first daughter, Gracie, after Mom, and Lovey for Loveland just didn't appeal to either of us, I thought Lacey was the perfect blending."

Our daughter cooed and waved her arms and Keri added, "And Lacey approves!"

Not long afterward, with Keri resting comfortable in our bed reading the book I'd brought home, I was holding Lacey in my own arms, feeding her for the first time.

Since Terrin's hunger issue didn't show up until after his child birthday, bottles hadn't been an issue.

But holding her close and seeing her gulp the formula down, well, I felt proud as punch of my little girl!

I'm not so sure I'll feel the same way about changing her diapers, but it's all part of caring for a baby, PlantSim nooboos excluded, so I'm sure I'll manage, just like all the Swanson fathers before me.

Then I cuddled my daughter close, remembering to give her back a few gentle pats.

I was rewarded with a pretty loud burp from such a small infant!

And holding Lacey in my arms, it felt like I could concur the world, Terrin's hunger and bladder issues included!

Thinking of Terrin, made me remember that Lacey's birth wasn't the only big event today.

So, I went in search of him, finding him down in the nectary basement with Dad, eagerly listening to his cousin, Kamaya.

Thankfully, Kamaya wasn't telling him all about her new job.

"I love the outdoors, so living at home with gardens and stables or visiting you here on the farm are two of my favorite places to be!"

"So, you don't like school? Or going to movies at the Theater?

Kamaya wrinkled her nose and said, "No! I hate being cooped up inside. Unless it's at the gym, though I prefer jogging or swimming in outdoor pools."

"Being outside is great, especially when the sun is shining, my skin loves soaking up sunshine as much as water! But I can't wait to be old enough to play musical instruments. In music club I've learned all about different genres of music as well as different musical instruments. My favorite is Geek Rock, but I'm not sure what instrument will be my favorite yet. I want to give all of them a try…and see a real concert with a conductor."

I knew Terrin could go on at length when the topic was music, so I interrupted, "Speaking of your birthday, your cake is waiting upstairs! And with your baby sister asleep, we'd better take advantage of the opportunity so none of us miss it!"

Terrin's eyes lit up as he asked, "Do you want to stay for my birthday, Kamaya? It's okay isn't it Dad, Grandpa?"

Dad shot me a quick look, leaving the decision up to me, and not wanting to disappoint Terrin or Kamaya, as they were both looking at me with such hopeful faces, I said, "Sure! She's family and welcome any time."

Kamaya gave me a big smile and said, "Thanks, Uncle Scott! Not everyone feels that way! I promise to clean up my plate and keep my light-fingered tendencies under control!"

Seeing the puzzled look on Terrin's face, I forestalled his questions by saying, "Then let's get this party started!"

Terrin stood before his cake thoughtfully pondering his wish as Keri watched him closely.

I know she was hoping the same thing I was, probably the same as Mom and Dad too.

That aging up to a teen would fix Terrin's hunger and bladder issues.

But she quickly hid her concern, clapping and shouting birthday wishes as I enthusiastically waved a noise maker.

Across the room, Dad almost looked like my mirror image as he twirled one just as wildly.

And Kamaya showed just how much she appreciated getting to be a part of the festivities when she clapped and shouted, "Happy Birthday, Terrin!"

Moms' words echoed Kamaya's but in a much more proper and contained way.

Though she did have her phone playing the traditional happy birthday tune.

As I switched to tooting on a party horn, Terrin gave one last child cheer.

And as the sparkles twinkled around him he stood before us a newly minted teenager!

As he checked out his new teen self, he exclaimed, "Hey, I even aged up in my favorite color, that's so cool!"

But all our hopes were dashed when Terrin dug into his birthday cake saying, "This cake tastes great! I'm starving! Can I have seconds?"

We all did our best to act cheerful.

I managed to keep my lips stretched into a tight smile as I ate my cake, though Keri and Mom kept their eyes focused on their cake.

Terrin even laughing when Mom's phone continued to play the happy birthday jingle.

"You can turn it off now Grammie, before your battery dies."

Mom managed to reply, "Turn it off. Right. I'll do that as soon as I finish."

Terrin didn't seemed fazed at all by being hungry, I guess he was used to it now.

And once we'd given him his birthday present and he started playing, you could see that nothing else mattered to him!

Especially since, with all his xylophone and drum playing when he was a toddler, and his music club participation as a child, he was already an accomplished musician.

Keri and I have a daughter, Lacey, and her big brother, Terrin, became a teen!

Terrin is spending even more time with his delinquent cousin, Kamaya, even inviting her to his birthday party.

But that didn't seem to matter when we realized aging up didn't fix Terrin's hunger issues!

Maybe being able to photosynthesize now will kick Terrin's PlantSim genetics back into place?

I hope so.

If it doesn't, I'm not sure what else to do!

Maybe Terrin has the right idea after all, focus on his talents, and let the rest take care of itself.

Entry 186: It's all About Hope

But Terrin wasn't the only one in the family that had had a birthday recently.

Mom and Keri weren't all that keen on leaving our nooboo with a sitter, and it didn't make me very comfortable either, but we didn't want to disappoint Catrice.

So, it was off to the Bluegill's home to visit with Catrice and her family.

Where Keri headed straight for the nursery to cuddle little Dirk, the newest toddler in our family!

Hearing his toddler laughter, it made me think of Terrin's toddler years and having Lacey's to look forward to.

Dirk's siblings had their birthdays too.

Shayna had become quite the young lady, telling us all her plans for school.

"I asked Uncle Jeffery if he'd give my class a tour of the Fire Station and let us ride in a firetruck! He said he'd check with the school about setting up a field trip and maybe we could sit in a fire truck and play with the hoses. But I really wanted to drive one! He told me that would have to wait until I was older. I hope they let teens work there part-time!"

Her twin, Shawn, was a bit quieter.

Preferring a game of chess or watching tv, though he did help Terrin out when he saw him staring at his mothers' guitar.

"Mom, won't you play for Terrin, as a birthday present?"

"That's not much of a present…"

"I'd love to hear you play, Aunt Catrice! In fact, I was hoping you would! Please?"

Catrice quickly gave in to Terrin's request, never happier than when she had a guitar in her hands.

And I don't know what made me happier.

Seeing Terrin's flower trail as he checked out every angle as she played, knowing that that feature of his genetics was still intact.

Or the glow on Catrice's face as she poured her heart and soul into the song.

Probably both!

After Catrice's impromptu concert, Terrin chatted with Josh, and soon they'd both gained a friend.

Dad smiled as he saw the two of them, glad that they were getting along so well.

And on that friendly note, we said our goodbyes.

Early the next morning, Terrin asked Keri for some more tutoring, hoping to give his school performance a boost.

This had me on daddy duty which wasn't a hardship at all.

I was totally content rocking with Lacey as the sun came up and filled the nursery with its rays.

In fact, I'd choose childcare over tutoring any day, dirty diapers and all!

Bu then the test we'd all been waiting for arrived.

With the sun casting its rays over the garden, Terrin walked out to a clear spot in the soil.

I was hoping to get a complete pictorial account of the photosynthesis process.

But he burrowed straight down so fast that I didn't see a thing!

A small cloud of dust was the only thing showing the soil had been disturbed at all!

Dust that was covering the leaves of a plant where Terrin had been standing only moments before!

If Keri had been out there, instead of taking care of Lacey, I'm sure she would have said something like, "Fascinating!" or "What an intriguing process!"

But all I could do was shout, "Terrin! Terrin! Are you okay? Can you hear me son?"

I'm not sure what I expected but definitely not Terrin's voice coming up from the ground, sounding clear as a bell!

"I'm fine Dad! This feels fantastic! Better than sleeping in a bed."

And he wasn't just trying to make me feel better either, as to my shock a great big smiley face appeared in a thought bubble above the plant!

Then he mused, "It's strange, but the sunshine feels even more intense down here than it does when I'm topside."

And his thoughts showed that thought plainly too.

And finally, "I can just feel my skin absorbing water from the soil, much more efficient than taking a bath or shower."

I murmured something unintelligible as I was still struck speechless at hearing Terrin's voice come up so clearly from under the ground and seeing his thoughts appear before my eyes!

I'd been talking to plants most of my life but having them talk back was definitely a first!

Then Terrin shot up out of the ground, soil flying everywhere as he exclaimed, "I feel fantastic!"

The relief I felt was like a weight being lifted off my shoulders, "You do? That's great son…"

"Except I'm starving, Dad! Are there any pancakes left? I think I have just enough time to eat before the bus shows up."

I nodded as the weight, which now felt doubled in size, settled back on my shoulders.

My hope turning to ashes in my mouth, tasting like the dust swirling around Terrin's feet.

But hearing Lacey's coos as Keri played with her helped ease the burden.

It was hard not to smile, especially since Keri's face was aglow as she watched for Lacey's first smile.

Keri was such a good mother, no surprise as she'd already had some practice with Terrin.

But not with bottle feeding and she did it like an expert.

When I commented on that she said, "I did have a baby brother, Scott. And I babysat for Ariel, Claire, and Lynn when their babies came along. Being part of a big family definitely gives you practice with kids, for coping with life. You just can't give up when the going gets tough, you have to keep hope alive by working together to get through it."

Keri's words struck me like a blow!

I was trying to take on too much of the responsibility again and it was making me give up hope.

So once Terrin got home from school I offered him his first driving lesson.

First, we went to the book store, where I picked up every gardening book and scientific and medical journal concerning PlantSims!

Terrin protested, "Dad, it's not a big deal," He shrugged, adding, "So I have to eat and use the bathroom, everyone else does. It doesn't bother me, really."

But when I told him he could buy some sheet music, he stopped protesting over my purchases and focused on his own.

Okay, it was probably too close to a bribe, but it was also the day after his birthday, so I'm just calling it a late birthday present!

Then Terrin drove over to the Theater and applied for a teen job and was accepted on the spot, with Terrin assuring me that he could keep his grades high as well as work after school.

Then we drove over to the elixir store so I could drop off the latest crop of Red Berry Beans and other assorted vegetables.

With that task done the consignment specialist, keeping her voice low, asked, "Any luck on finding a cure for your son?"

I shook my head and said, "Not yet. We were hoping that aging up might fix it but it didn't. I haven't given up hope though. I just purchased every book on gardening and PlantSims they had at the bookstore. Hopefully, I'll find something that can help him."

"I've never met a PlantSim before, but he looks healthy and well-adjusted enough to me…just look at the way he's soaking up that Alchemy book! And that trail of flowers he leaves, completely adorable!"

"He's just a teen!"

"But he'll be a young adult soon enough and he's tempting enough to make me turn Vegetarian!"

I turned to look and Terrin was totally absorbed in the Alchemy book.

And what he'd read had him very excited as he called me over and said, "Maybe Alchemy is the answer Dad! To my hunger and bladder issues. I read that elixirs can turn others into occults as well as cure them!"

I hated to burst Terrin's bubble, but I said, "Yeah, I've tried that avenue already. The cure involves removing every trace of the occult genetics, not curing some aspect of their genetics that's broken. But I thought you said you were okay with how things were, that having to eat and use the bathroom was no big deal?"

"Well, it's not. But it bothers you, Mom, Grandpa, and Grammie, a lot. So I thought if there was something simple I could do…Besides how cool would it be to go on tour and never have to eat, drink, or take bathroom breaks! And an hour or two of photosynthesizing during the day and I don't even have to sleep. I could jam all night! So let me help!"

Terrin's words had me realizing that we hadn't hidden our worries from him well at all.

And that restoring his full PlantSim abilities would really make him an unstoppable force in the music industry!

"Okay, son. I'll catch you up on everything we've looked into so far and then we can go over the material I picked up at the bookstore. And Terrin?"

"Yeah, Dad?"

"Thanks. I know if we work together, we'll find a way!

Letting Terrin be part of the solution instead of the problem had him feeling so confident that he drove home like a pro!

When we got home, I'd barely stepped in the door when Keri flew into my arms.

"Scott, Lacey smiled at me! I was rocking her and she looked right up at me and smiled! Motherhood is so rewarding."

Then next thing I knew, Keri was kissing me passionately.

And stroking my face, she didn't hide her intent at all as she asked, "Want to try for that boy!?!"

We won't know if Keri's wish will come true for a while yet, but it was sure fun trying to make it happen!

Terrin becoming a teen and being able to photosynthesize didn't solve his hunger and bladder issues.

But he's now on board in helping me find a solution as he's decided that having all of his PlantSim genetics functioning properly would be a big plus in his music career.

And though I was enthusiastic and more than willing to help Keri complete her 'have a boy' baby wish, it suddenly dawned on me that we could have another girl rather than a boy!

But I'm not giving up hope!

Entry 187: Losing Control
« Reply #246 on: January 20, 2022, 12:04:09 PM »

But first thing the next morning it was clear that our romantic evening in the tent had been successful.

As Keri's condition made itself known with a violent start!

Keri was firmly convinced of that anyway, though my take on it was that maybe it was just a digestive upset.

Surely it takes more than one night to conceive!?!

After she got cleaned up, Keri relaxed in a rocker with Lacey.

But she still looked like she might dash off to the bathroom any minute!

But a bit of a rest had Keri looking and feeling much better.

So much better she helped out in the garden while Lacey napped but was right there to cuddle and play with her when she awoke.

But there was someone in the family who was still feeling down.

And Mom decided she was in the perfect position to help.

Which is why I drove her over to my Aunt Karina's that afternoon.

We found Baron out front along with a mare we didn't know.

When Mom asked, Karina said, "The Paint is Baron's mate, Chardonnay, and she'll be foaling soon."

With a sigh she added, "It'll be nice having a foal on the ranch again. It's been much too quiet since all my other pets passed on…and with Ben gone now…"

Before Aunt Karina started crying, Mom quickly asked, "About that…I was wondering if you'd like Lady to live here on the ranch with you?"

"Oh, you want to give me Lady!?! That would be wonderful, Marley! But are you sure you want to part with her?"

Mom smiled, "Kimo was born here on your ranch so having one of Kimo's pups make this their home, it's the proper thing to do. It's not all that far away, and we still have Kimo and Max. And Max has two puppies here in town with his mate Snaggles Hobble. But you could always breed Lady and keep their line going!"

Karina hugged Mom tightly, "What a marvelous idea! Thank you so much, Marley! That's just what this ranch needs, more young ones. But my Karie's working on that too!"

That's when we heard a moan from the other room.

A moan that filled me with dread!

We all rushed into the living room and my worst fears materialized; my cousin Karie was in labor!

Mom quickly took control and got Karie outside as I ran for our car.

When we got to the hospital, Mom went inside with Karie.

Then Karie's husband, Blaine Marshall, came hurrying up to the hospital entrance.

Yes, the same Blaine Marshall that my sister Mia dated in high school!

Before I had much of a chance to wonder if that would be awkward at family reunions…

Karie came out holding her daughter, Rosemarie, with Mom following proudly behind her!

Since we were already in town, we stopped by the school and found Terrin playing his guitar.

He was getting in a little guitar practice for music club that afternoon, as all the members were going to demonstrate their musical talent, now that they could actually play instruments.

And extra skill with the guitar would definitely show his boss that he was serious about a career in music.

He ran through several of the new songs he'd learned, playing them flawlessly.

Mom and I clapped, but we weren't Terrin's only audience.

Just as he was heading inside for music club, a blonde teenager came down the steps and said, "You have a lot of talent, Terrin! You should form a band! I'd pay to hear you play!"

Terrin mumbled something I didn't catch.

But seeing the flirty glance the girl threw Terrin as she passed him, it was obvious to me and Mom that she wasn't just interested in Terrin's music!

Especially when she added, "Musical talent and pretty flowers too, that's some combination! See you in school tomorrow!"

So, it wasn't much of a surprise when Terrin seemed preoccupied when we were researching his condition later that afternoon.

"Dad, can I ask you something? Not about me…well, not exactly…about…girls…"

I kept my eyes totally focused on the book in my hands and tried to sound calm, "Sure, son. You can ask me anything."

"Well, you saw what happened this afternoon…I couldn't even talk to that girl…I feel so comfortable around most kids in my class, especially the ones in music club, but when a…girl… talks to me, I just freeze…I think something else is wrong with me!"

"Not at all Terrin, girls can do that to any guy, especially if they haven't established a friendship with them in grade school. Just find out what interests you have in common and then it will be much easier to talk with them."

Terrin stood up, looking a bit less worried as he said, "So I just have to get to know them better? Find out if we like the same things?"

Then his face took on that same worried look as before as he asked, "But what if we don't have anything in common? Or she thinks I'm a geek or something?"

"I wouldn't worry about it so much son, just take it slow, maybe chat with girls in your music club first. You just started high school, you have plenty of time…"

Terrin gulped as he said, "That's just it Dad, a girl in my class is coming over to study later…"

Unfortunately, we didn't have time to discuss it further as our guests started arriving for Lacey's toddler birthday!

Our first one was Jordan Dean who had celebrated his child birthday recently.

Like his older brother Jeremy, Jordan had inherited his mother's red hair.

Inside, newly aged up teen, Keanu, was looking rather less than thrilled to be spending the evening at a toddler birthday party.

He was giving his mother, Mia, one of those teenage you-really-owe-me-for-this looks!

Though when I noticed his odd-looking pants, I figured maybe he was just embarrassed about his age up outfit.

But no time to fix his wardrobe now.

Because the house was soon filled with family as Keri brought Lacey to her birthday cake.

Dad and I clapped and cheered as Mia blew a party horn.

Claire Loveland, my cousin Tyler's partner, was clapping and cheering too, but her attention was on the family ghost that was joining in the celebration.

Not one of our family ghosts but one indirectly related to us, the ghost of Grandpa Leonard's mother!

But Keri didn't take any notice of the ghost cheering behind her.

She just bent over and carefully blew out Lacey's candle.

And a few minutes later, surrounded by sparkles, Lacey became a toddler!

Keri got Lacey dressed in one of the cute outfits Mom had thoughtfully provided.

Which included a matching green bow.

I know I'm biased but our daughter is just precious!

She's got my tanned skin, and her dark hair comes from both me and Keri, but her nose…well, that's all Singleton, just like Keri's, which makes her cute as a button!

But precious or not, Lacey had a pressing need that Keri took care of immediately.

Her first trip to the potty!

Then Keri got Lacey settled on her napping mat, handing her a bedtime bottle.

If Keri's odd outfit hadn't clued me in, her words made it crystal clear, "You’re going to be a big sister soon, Lacey!"

Before I could wrap my mind around the fact that Keri was indeed pregnant, the doorbell rang.

And Terrin yelled, "I'll get it!"

Lacey's toddler birthday had me forgetting about that earlier conversation I'd had with Terrin, but the nervous excitement in his voice over answering the door had it coming back in full force.

I smiled as I thought about the blonde girl we'd seen with Terrin that afternoon.

But when Terrin answered the door, I was filled with nervousness myself, as it wasn't the same girl!

This girl was a brunette, one with green fairy wings.

And my nervousness was actually terror as her eyes clearly showed she was a vampire too!

Then my terror grew as it was more than obvious that Terrin was attracted to this girl.

And she felt the same way!

Just when I felt I had a handle on the goings on in my life, things flew totally out of my control, again!

Lacey became an adorable toddler, which wasn't unexpected.

But just when I'd wrapped my mind around that, Keri's suspected pregnancy was confirmed!

And though I thought I was ready for Terrin's interest in girls, clearly I am not.

Especially since his first date is with a girl who's not only a fairy but is also a vampire, a combination that's totally out of my limited experience!

With these new developments, Terrin's hunger and bladder issues seem tame by comparison.

Will Keri get her wish and have a boy?

Will I be able to help Terrin navigate the treacherous waters of teen relationships?

Whatever the answers, it's pretty clear that I'm no longer in control, if I ever was!

The next morning, Mom helped Lacey use the potty.

Then promptly sat down in front of the smelly potty and started teaching Lacey to talk.

Sometimes Mom's idea of proper totally confuses me!

But then Mom said, "Grammie writes novels on the computer!"

And Lacey excitedly waved her arms and repeated, "Puter! Puter!"

So, I couldn't really question Mom's methods.

Then I found Keri and Terrin in the living room sitting companionably together on the couch.

Keri was watching TV and listening to kid's music, while Terrin worked on his homework.

Or that's what I thought he was doing until he asked, "What about this tux, Mom? Do you think Dayna would like it?"

Keri smiled and said, "Dayna asked YOU to prom, Terrin, not your clothes. I think any one of them would do nicely, so pick the one you like best."

"That sounds like a good idea, Mom, even if this isn't the official prom. It's actually something new for AP, a Homecoming Dance, which is open to all high school students. Prom is more exclusive, open to Juniors and Seniors. Unless you work on the Prom committee, then you get to go both, if you want to."

"Either way, if Dayna asked you, it's a pretty sure bet that she wants to spend time with you. Do you know her well? Is she in your Music Club?"

Terrin frowned and said, "I don't know her well at all. In fact, she misses quite a bit of school, but I'm not sure why. Someone said it's due to a genetic condition she has, but I don't know for sure. But since I have a genetic condition of my own, that actually gives us something in common."

Then the bus arrived and Terrin headed off to school.

Being reminded of Terrin's condition, that afternoon Terrin and I did some more research.

The book I was reading was one of the gardening books I'd purchased from the bookstore.

One that had an entire section about PlantSims written by a scientist in Sunset Valley, Susan Wainwright.

I couldn't contain my excitement and blurted, "This article says, a scientist, Susan Wainwright, has not only done extensive research in science and gardening but she has a PlantSim child too!"

Terrin's reaction was even more astounded as his mouth dropped open and he finally shouted, "Really!?!"

I quickly made a phone call to Anoki and asked him about this Susan Wainwright to see if she was legit.

And his answer had me smiling as he said, "Susan Wainwright!?! She's one of the foremost scientists in the field, along with her husband Boyd. In fact, they not only have a PlantSim daughter, but a son who has a peculiar genetic condition as well. I should have thought of that before! I'll give them a call and explain the situation. I'm sure they'll be calling you soon to ask some questions, maybe even order some tests for Terrin to help figure out what's going on."

I passed on this information to Terrin but tried to contain myself as I didn't want to get his hopes up.

Though when Terrin left the room, I was crowing, "It wasn't just science or medicine we needed to be looking into but gardening as well! I have a feeling that if anyone can help Terrin it will be the Wainwright's!"

But that hadn't prepared me for the visitor that showed up later that evening.

A young girl who was without a doubt a PlantSim!

"Mr. Scott Swanson?"

When I nodded the young girl continued, "Hi! I'm Iris Wainwright! My parents were so concerned about what's happening with your son they had my brother fly me here in his…private jet… to conduct some tests personally. I was curious myself as I've never met another PlantSim."

I invited Iris inside and before I could explain that Terrin wasn't home, he walked in the door.

And the attraction between the two of them was so intense it filled the room!

I shouldn't have been surprised since the two teen PlantSims had never met someone of their own species before.

But I still felt uncomfortable witnessing such a personal moment.

Though their words were generic enough as Iris said, "Hi, Terrin, I'm Iris, Iris Wainwright."

And though Terrin shot me a look, he replied, "Hi, Iris. Welcome to Appaloosa Plains."

As they shook hands, I finally had the presence of mind to say, "I'll leave you two alone. I'm sure Iris has plenty of medical questions for you."

But I didn't go far and overheard plenty.

And, strangely enough, Terrin seemed totally at ease with Iris.

Despite telling me recently that he couldn't talk to girls!

Maybe because Iris is a PlantSim, giving them something in common that goes deeper than interests.

"So do you work with your parents in their lab?"

"Ever since my teen birthday," Iris said proudly, adding, "But I've been a test subject all my life, though Mom controls that exclusively. I attend school there too as I go to the Science Academy."

"Won't that hurt your grades, being here and missing school?"

Iris laughed, "My parents would never allow that! Since we weren't sure how long it would take to figure out what's going on with you, they had me transferred to the Science Academy here at Wolfson's Hospital and Research Facility. And I'll continue my after-school-job doing research with you. Don't worry, nothing that will hurt or harm you! Mom wouldn't condone anything like that! But I'd like to get back to Sunset Valley and my…friends, as soon as possible, so let's start with the basics. Can you photosynthesize?"

Terrin nodded, "Yes! I tried it right after my teen birthday as soon as the sun came out! It felt fantastic but I was still hungry afterwards."

"Does being hungry limit your daily activities? Do you feel you have to rest more than the rest of your family does?"

"Not at all! I've attended school regularly and even participated in Music Club since grade school. I know a lot about music, piano, drums, and bass, but so far I've only ever played guitar. Well, not counting playing the xylophone or toy drum when I was toddler."

Terrin blushed a bit at mentioning being a toddler.

Then enthusiastically added, "I've even got a part-time job at the theater here in town," With a shrug he added, "My family and friends think I have a lot of talent, enough to be a Rock Star one day!"

Iris' smile faltered as she asked, "A Rock Star?"

Terrin continued, "I know, for someone smart like you who's family's got their own Research Facility, a career in music probably sounds like a pretty lame goal…"

Iris interrupted and said, "Not at all. My eldest brother, Patrick, is in a band with some friends of his and they're awesome! Well, at least their music is and the band is quite successful. But if you've really got talent why not put it to the test!"

"Put it to the test?"

"Yes! Anyone can be a big fish in a small pond, but it takes real talent to be the cream of the crop!"

"Like your brother, Patrick, back in Sunset Valley?"

Excitedly Iris said, "Think bigger! A small city like Roaring Heights, or maybe even…Bridgeport!"

"Bridgeport!?! That's where our Founder lived before she came here! Well, she was in Aggie's Corner first, then the family moved here, but she was a ghost then…"

Iris queried, "Your Founder lived in Bridgeport and then moved to…Aggie's Corner? Why would someone from a beautiful city like Bridgeport choose to move to a town I've never even heard of?"

"It's a long story and I don't have all the details yet. But I've always been interested in learning more about Bridgeport. I never thought of actually moving there…but now that you've brought it up…I'll definitely have to track down Founder Brooke some night and have her fill me in. But Iris?"

"Yes, Terrin?"

"It would be way easier to make it as a Rock Star, especially in Bridgeport, if I didn't have to eat or take bathroom breaks!"

"So, we'll just have to figure out what's going on…I'll get some tests set up in the lab and let you know when. But it's getting late and I should be getting back before Mrs. Miller starts worrying. This town is worse than Sunset Valley, with everything closing by 9 and everyone in bed by 10!"

With those words, Iris headed out the door, her flower trail following behind her.

Leaving Terrin entranced by the whole encounter.

But was it Iris herself that had him mesmerized?

The fact that she was a PlantSim? Or a pretty teenage girl? Or that she was both!?!

Or was it the idea of being a Rock Star in Bridgeport!?!

My thoughts were prompting a lot more questions than answers!

But I didn't ask any of them.

Because after Iris left, Terrin went into the living room and started practicing his guitar.

He was so intent on his playing, so focused, I decided to keep my questions to myself.

Though whether that was for Terrin's benefit or my own was another question.

Because I wasn't really sure I wanted to know the answers!

To find out that, because of me, because of my persistence in trying to find a cure for Terrin, I might have to deal with my son leaving the farm, our family, for the bright lights and fame of Bridgeport!

A plaintive cry from the nursery had me hurrying to check on Lacey.

But just as she pulled herself up to a standing position, my eye caught the painting on the wall.

One that Terrin had done, his first actually; two simple stick figures, not a masterpiece in anyone's estimation.

But a painting that made my heart ache for the simpler times of childhood; teaching them to fish, helping with homework, hearing their childish laughter as they listened to a ghost story.

I was abruptly brought back to the here and now when Lacey jiggled the crib railing and said, "Daddy! Pick me up!"

I focused on doing something simple, something I could actually control and did as she asked.

But once she was in my arms, she smiled and said, "Higher, Daddy, higher!"

So, I complied, tossing her up in the air, listening to her delighted laughter.

Then, my heart full of love and agony over being a parent, I snuggled her close.

Lacey endured the tight hug for a moment, then she began squirming in my arms.

"Down, Daddy, down! Lacey, walk!"

As Lacey eagerly walked towards me, her steps more and more confident, I thought that pretty much summed up raising children, didn't it?

Nooboos were content, as long as they were fed and clean and safe, in your arms or in their cribs.

Toddlers enjoyed a few cuddles, but just for a bit, then they wanted to be down and walking on their own.

Childhood gave them even more confidence, playing tag, riding their bikes, hanging out with friends, needing you less and less.

Then came the teenage years, a little bit of angst, but more independence, learning to drive, going on dates, going to the prom, thinking about Uni, and careers.

And leaving home…

All that went racing through my mind as Lacey walked toward me.

But I shook myself out of my reverie, caught my young daughter up in my arms and focused totally on her.

If nothing else, my thoughts made me realize just how important it was to stay in the moment, to enjoy her toddlerhood.

So, with walking mastered, and after a quick shower, I went back to the nursery to join Lacey for some play time.

Watching her hit the xylophone keys with the little wooden baton.

Seeing her face light up as she struck one musical note after another.

Feeling in my heart that this is what was important.

Times like this were not just trivial moments, hurried through to get on to the next task.

They were all special!

Meant to be savored and enjoyed, etched into our memories, to be taken out and reflected on years and years from now, as comforting as a warm hug from a loved one.

Knowing that such precious toddler moments were fleeting, I kept totally focused on Lacey.

And decided to let the future take care of itself.

This entry has run the gamut of intense emotions.

Euphoria at learning of the Wainwright's extensive scientific and gardening knowledge.

Especially since they've sent their PlantSim daughter, Iris, to AP, so she can conduct the research into Terrin's condition personally.

Then despair at the thought of Terrin's cure making it even more possible for him to leave us!

Not just moving out, but having Iris fill his head with thoughts of being a famous Rock Star in the far away city of Bridgeport!

But then my despair was replaced with love and hope, as I finally realized that I needed to enjoy this time with my children.

To love them and focus on the present, making the most of the time we have together.

And hope that everything we share makes them strong, capable of having rich lives of their own, whatever they choose to do in the future or wherever they go.

Entry 189: Parenthood Continues
« Reply #248 on: February 23, 2022, 08:33:38 AM »

In family news, my Aunt Karina threw a baby shower for my cousin Karie, saying it was easier afterward when you knew the gender of the baby so toddler outfits could be chosen in a wider variety of colors, rather than neutral greens and yellows.

But little Rosemarie wasn't the only new member of the Schmidt/Marshall family.

Baron's mate, Chardonnay, had a foal they named Spritzer!

She was a tri-color Paint, having brown patches, which she got from her sire, as well as patches of black and white from her dam.

I don't know much about horses but Spritzer sure was a pretty little filly.

And Spritzer wasn't the only one who looked nice as Terrin looked pretty sharp in his formalwear.

Even if it they were calling it a Homecoming Dance, it was Terrin's first one and he looked as nervous as if it was an official Prom!

Keri tried to ease Terrin's nerves by saying, "Just relax and be yourself. Treat Dayna with respect and courtesy, get her punch, ask her to dance, to both fast and slow songs, and most of all, have fun!"

But things didn't go as Terrin planned at all.

First the limo didn't show up at the farm and neither did Dayna!

Terrin went to the school anyway and waited outside for Dayna, thinking they'd gotten their signals crossed.

But still no Dayna!

I couldn't help but think, as Terrin did, that he'd been stood up!

How humiliating, especially for his first formal dance.

Terrin bit the bullet and decided to attend on his own.

But things improved immensely when he reached the front entrance and his cousin, Kamaya, looking stunning in her formal dress, waved and said, "Oh, thanks goodness you didn't give up on Dayna! She's inside and she feels terrible about not meeting you at the farm. It wasn't really her fault though, her hydration cycle hit her unexpectedly and she couldn't leave the ocean."

Terrin was instantly concerned, "But she's okay, now!?! I don't want her to put herself in jeopardy just to attend a dance!"

"She's fine now. And hoping you're not too mad at her…"

"Mad? I'm just glad she's okay! Let's get inside before she thinks I stood her up!"

While Terrin was attending the dance, Keri spent some time with Lacey.

First watching how cute she was playing with her doll.

Then tickling and chatting with her, their bond becoming stronger than ever.

And then rocking Lacey gently to sleep.

Keri looked more than content holding our daughter and knowing Lacey would be a big sister soon.

The idea of having another child was growing on me and, just like Keri, I was hoping for a son!

Knowing that a third child would make us busier than ever, I settled down to learn another recipe.

Cobbler this time, as Keri had a craving, but I'd barely read the list of ingredients when there was yelling from the nursery!

The chaotic sight that met my eyes left no doubt that Keri was in labor!

Mom and Dad both screaming, of course, while Lacey just played with her doll, not knowing what was going on.

Kimo, alerted by the loud voices and Keri's distress, was pacing around the room.

I'll confess that seeing Keri in pain had me freaking out a bit too.

But not so much I wasn't smiling at the thought of being a dad again.

But when the last contraction passed, Keri quickly changed into outerwear, and brought me back to my senses with her sensible words.

"I think we have time to make it to the hospital, Scott. If we hurry!"

We made it to the hospital without incident and we got inside as quickly as Keri could walk.

Keri's labor and delivery went smoothly, so a few hours later we were ready to head back to the farm.

With our son safely cradled in Keri's arms!

We'd gone through quite the list of names for a boy.

First Keri thought about using, Rodney, after her dad, but when we found out it meant Roda's Island or island near the clearing or meadow, it didn't seem to be quite the right name.

But it did have Keri checking on names that meant farm, since we loved living on ours.

The choices we found were:

Kelby, meaning farm near the spring.

Chilton, meaning farm near the well, and even Welby, meaning well farm.

Then there was Bosworth, which was a bit closer to what we wanted, meaning fenced farm near the woods. But though our gardens were fenced in, we didn't actually live near a woods. Besides, Bosworth sounded a bit posh to me, a snobby kind of name for a farm boy!

Leighton was a bit better, meaning one from the meadow farm, but still sounded a bit over the top for me.

Barric was more down to earth sounding and it meant grain farm, but since we didn't really grow grain on the farm, not quite the thing either.

Mayer was even more basic, its meaning simply farmer, but since Mayer sounded just like Mayor, a bit confusing.

But then we found another name, one that was Scandinavian for farmer, and a name that Keri and I both liked.

So welcome to the family farm, Joren Swanson!

Terrin was back from the dance and held his baby brother first thing.

But Terrin looked a little down despite Dayna meeting him at the dance.

I hesitated to ask what was wrong, but Keri had no such qualms, "Didn't you have fun at the dance?"

Terrin nodded saying, "Once I got there it got better, I even boogied to the stage to accept my King's crown, and my friends all cheered. But in my acceptance speech the chaperones weren't too happy when I suggested that the evening would be more fun if someone pulled off a school prank."

At that I added, "Well, congratulations on winning the crown, but I can see why the chaperones weren't happy about your suggestion, having to make sure that didn't happen now that's you'd put the thought in everyone's head!"

Keri poo pooed that saying, "Kids pulling pranks at the school is pretty normal, they should be used to it by now! But was winning the crown the best part of the evening? Did it go downhill from there?"

If Terrin's face hadn't been so green, I'm sure we'd have seem him blush as he said, "No. Dayna snuck up behind me when I was waiting in line to get us some punch and she kissed me! Then asked me to go steady!"

Keri squealed, "Oh, your first kiss, how adorable!"

Terrin looked even more like he wanted to sink into the floor.

In fact, I have a feeling if we'd been outside, he would have photosynthesized on the spot!

But then Terrin admitted that even though Dayna had kissed him he hadn't accepted her offer to become her boyfriend.

Terrin didn't say it, but I was pretty sure that was because of how he'd reacted when he'd met Iris Wainwright.

Not only was she a PlantSim, and a beautiful one, she was also a genius and committed to helping figure out his genetic issues.

Plus, she was totally on board with Terrin's plans to become a Rock Star.

How could any boy not be totally smitten!?!

Terrin got Joren settled in his crib and then tucked in Lacey who'd crawled onto her napping mat.

Despite his own turmoil, Terrin was a great big brother to his much younger siblings.

And once he started playing guitar his mood improved dramatically.

Terrin loves music as much as Keri loves playing chess.

As much as I love fishing, cooking, and gardening.

And though it pains me at bit to admit it, Iris is right.

A farming community wouldn't let Terrin's talent shine as brightly as it could in Bridgeport.

With all my children safely at home, the youngest two sleeping peacefully in the nursery, and Terrin playing guitar, I settled on our bed to finish reading that recipe I'd started when Keri went into labor.

And I put my new knowledge to use, baking up a cobbler that came out of the oven all bubbly and golden brown.

It filled the house with its delicious aroma.

And I knew that as soon as it cooled a bit, we'd all be grabbing plates of the scrumptious treat.

I was up early the next morning, and with the eggs gathered and the cow milked, I read another recipe.

Then I worked in the garden before it got too hot, planting a few more vegetables to replace some that had gone barren and been composted.

Keri got in some early morning fishing.

Then Keri and Mom spent some time in the nursery with Joren and Lacey.

Keri even managed to sneak in a quick workout, she is truly amazing!

I loved peeking in on them and seeing the contentment on all their faces.

But that afternoon we got a call from Terrin asking us to meet him at the school.

Iris had secured some lab time and was ready to begin the tests her mother had suggested.

One look at Terrin's face and I knew he was just as nervous about the outcome as we were!

Keri and I have added a son, Joren, to our family!

Terrin had fun at the Homecoming Dance with Dayna, but decided it was too early to make their relationship exclusive.

Especially since he and Iris had felt a mutual attraction!

I'm getting more and more reconciled to the idea that Terrin will follow Iris' suggestion about a musical career in Bridgeport.

But with Iris starting Terrin's tests we're all a bit nervous.

Will the Wainwright's scientific and gardening knowledge of PlantSims prove to sufficient to cure Terrin?

Or will he be subject to hunger and bladder issues for the rest of his life?

And then a worse thought occurs to me!

Are Terrin's hunger and bladder issues just the first sign of a more serious condition!?!

Hopefully, the tests Iris is performing will provide conclusive results one way or another.

Entry 190: Iris' Input
« Reply #249 on: February 26, 2022, 05:00:47 PM »

Terrin took a moment to compose himself.

He sat down at a nearby picnic table and worked on his homework.

As other students began leaving the school, we saw just how popular Terrin had become.

"Hey, Terrin, nice riff you played in music class today! I heard a rumor you might start a band! That would be awesome!"

"Thanks! I think so too, but I've got some things to work out before I can commit to that."

Then Noah Cook came running by saying, "It's finally time for my birthday, Terrin! I'll be a teen the next time you see me and old enough to attend any parties you have!"

"Happy Birthday, Noah! I'll definitely add you to my party list, if I throw any…"

Then Terrin followed Noah's example and took off at a run for Wolfson's Hospital and Research Facility.

It was encouraging to see that some of Terrin's PlantSim genetics were still operating normally as a trail of flower's appeared at regular intervals behind him as he ran.

Right up to the entry door, then Terrin slowed to a walk, firmed his shoulders, and strode inside.

A few minutes later, Iris showed up too, with her own trail of flowers.

Iris sure did look like a scientific genius in her junior lab assistant outfit, complete with jacket and official badge!

She even tried her best to reassure us, "The tests won't hurt Terrin in the least. I'll just be taking blood and DNA samples today so we should be finished pretty quickly. Though I'll have him stay under observation for a few minutes to make sure he's not dizzy or light-headed. And I'll make sure he gets home as well."

"So, you're saying we should go home and not sit in the waiting room like nervous nellies?"

"That's probably best. Sometimes it helps patients to relax more if their family's go about their regular routines instead of hovering."

Keri followed Iris's advice and completed an opportunity of her own.

Delivering a death flower to Kia and Anoki's youngest child, Joy Moon.

"Thanks, Aunt Keri! Dad will be thrilled to see this! He hasn't had any luck finding one in the wild."

"Why would your father want a flower that causes death, Joy!?! It sounds too dangerous a plant to keep around!"

Joy's answer shocked us, "Death flowers don't CAUSE death, Aunt Keri, they PREVENT it! Death flowers are Grim's most precious possession! Grim will accept it instead of taking a life!"

I recalled Grim's words to us at Grandpa Leonard's death, "My promise to your father is one that will be upheld for all Swanson's, as long as they each hold what is precious to me! But if one should forget this offering, then for that one, the promise will be null and void and they will join me as all have before this pact was sealed."

With Joy's information solving the mystery of Grim's words, Keri and I headed home and quickly distributed all the death flowers we'd harvested over the years and kept locked in the family chests.

We'd have to find seeds and grow a few more to protect all of us, but at least Mom, Dad, Keri, and I are protected for now.

Though the true test will be presenting one to Grim the next time he shows up!

But I couldn't resist checking on Terrin to see how his tests had gone.

I found him playing guitar outside the Research Center.

Iris had changed into street clothes and was watching Terrin play.

After Terrin finished the song, he excitedly chatted with Iris and told her that he'd been thinking about Bridgeport ever since she'd mentioned it.

"I hadn't even considered leaving Appaloosa Plains and having a musical career someplace else, let alone Bridgeport, but now that you've brought it up, it sounds like a fantastic idea!"

"I do have moments of inspiration, just like my parents! In fact, I was thinking of something else that might help your career too."

But before Iris could share her latest idea, the teens were interrupted by Keri's sister, Ariel, who wanted a photo of Terrin.

Even though Ariel and my cousin Evan have split up, Ariel still considers Terrin her nephew, as he's Keri's adopted son.

Though I'm not sure if her interest is purely familial or scientific, probably a combination of both.

When Terrin joined Iris again, she said, "I was thinking that there are two ways you could jump start your musical career. One is, of course, securing a part-time job at the local theater, which you've already done."

Terrin nods eagerly, saying, "Yes, I did that right after my teen birthday. My plan is to work hard and continue playing guitar and reach level three before I graduate from high school. After my birthday, when I apply for a permanent position, I'm hoping to start off at least at level 4, maybe higher! But you said two ways, what's the other one?"

"Well, though it's not necessary to be successful in your chosen career, SimU has an exceptional Fine Arts program. It could give your music career a nice jump start as well as substantial pay increases. Have you ever thought about attending?"

"Not really…all my aunts attended Uni and my Aunt Catrice graduated with a Fine Arts Degree. And she's doing quite well in her music career here in town! But she got to attend with her sisters…I'm not sure about going on my own."

"I know what you mean…I didn't have any trouble getting into SimU but my boyfriend hasn't been accepted yet. He's not all that interested in academics…but he works out a lot and loves sports."

"Not everyone likes hitting the books or enjoys studying, I prefer playing the guitar or painting myself, but my mom loves a good game of chess. She taught me how to play and even helped me study when I was younger."

"My mother loves chess and so do I. It's a great foundation for focusing. Maybe we could play together some time?"

"Sure. I'm not very good yet, but I enjoy the game."

"Hey, you two brainiacs, any idea what the answer to question 7 is for our science homework?"

Both Iris and Terrin pulled out their text books, smiled, and said, "Photosynthesis!"

Soon after helping their classmate with her homework, Terrin said, "I know you don't have to eat but I'm starving, Iris! My Dad's a great cook, why don't you come home with me?"

Iris hesitated just long enough for Terrin to realize she might have gotten the wrong impression about his invitation.

So, he clarified, "You mentioned a boyfriend, Iris, so I'm not asking you out on a date. We can discuss Uni some more while I eat. Since you've already been accepted, you can give me pointers on what skills they like to see for their Fine Arts program. It's just two PlantSims getting to spend time with each other, as friends."

Iris tilted her head to the side and put a hand on her hip, then she smiled and said, "Friends? I like the sound of that! It'd be nice having a friend that's like me!"

As the two of them stood there smiling at each other, it didn't take a genius to know they'd be friends in no time!

Terrin was pretty excited when Keri met him and Iris in the entryway.

"Hey, Mom! Iris is here to discuss Uni and its Fine Arts program. After I eat, I'm going to take the aptitude test and see what skills I need to work on! What do you think of that?"

"I think that's a great idea, Terrin! I had no idea you were thinking about attending University."

"I wasn't…not 'til Iris mentioned it, anyway! Iris has amazing ideas, Mom! Heading to Bridgeport to establish my career, where truly talented musicians can make it big. And now University! She's opened my mind up to so many possibilities!"

Keri dryly said, "It seems like Iris is taking a lot more upon herself than just running a few tests…"

Iris shot Keri a look and said, "I take my scientific responsibilities very seriously, Mrs. Swanson. Terrin's health is my top priority. But for a body to be healthy, you have to consider the mental and emotional states as well as the physical and then harmonize all three."

I don't know about Keri, but I sure was impressed!

Not only with Iris's knowledge, but by the effortless confidence and poise she had for a teen.

I couldn't help asking, "So what's your take on getting the best quality plants, Iris?"

Iris didn't hesitate as she said, "That's simple, Mr. Swanson! Start with the best quality seeds you can find! Then keep planting your best harvestables until you have attained the perfect crops! Of course, regular watering is a must, and fertilizing, though optional, can make for more robust plants. Though if you've already grown a PlantSim, I'm sure none of that information is news to you, Mr. Swanson."

"As a gardener yourself Iris, you should know that talking about our gardens and plants is almost as much reward as gardening. You never know when some little tidbit of information will give you priceless information. Just today we learned from my niece, Joy, that Death Flowers can actually save a Sim from death not bring it on prematurely!"

"I've heard that as well, Mr. Swanson, but all of my parents' scientific knowledge has allowed them to live lengthy lives without having to resort to that as yet."

"So, no one in your family has ever tried it? Too bad. I was hoping for confirmation, but I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens the next time Grim shows up. Not that anyone's close to meeting him, but I'd like to keep my parents around for a good long time!"

"As a teen, I have to mock my parents a bit, for their little habits and whatnot, but I'm hoping they stick around for a long time too. As well as my older sister, Blaire, and her husband. They're elders too, but the only one we've lost so far is my sister-in-laws father. Death is not something we've experienced much in my family, but Terrin tells me you have several family ghosts, and their urns are all kept here on the farm."

"That's true! Our Founders, Brooke and Jerad, our first gen, Summer and Nolan, and my grandparents, Rielle and Leonard. Plus, we have two ghost cats that show up from time to time, Kobe and Flynn. Kobe even scared the wits out of me and mom when he possessed the hover bed recently!"

It was getting late, so Iris turned towards the door to head back to the Miller home, though she cast a sidelong glance at me and added, "I'd really love to hang around and see a few of those ghosts myself, Mr. Swanson…"

Iris took a few steps, threw her hand up in the air and pronounced, "You know, staying here on the farm would increase the odds of that happening, Mr. Swanson!"

I smiled at her obviousness and said, "And make it easier for you to observe Terrin's habits. Why don't you call Mrs. Miller and let her know you'll be staying here from now on, while I call your parents and explain the necessity for the change? All in the name of science, of course."

Iris nodded enthusiastically, "Of course!"

While Iris was gathering her belongings from the Miller home down the road, Terrin went ahead and took the University aptitude test.

He said he didn't want to waste a moment, but I suspected that part of doing so was to save face in case he did badly.

And though he only received +6 credits towards a Technology degree, he earned the full 18 credits towards a Fine Arts degree, along with a partial scholarship of $1000 simoleans per semester!

Not bad at all for someone who'd never even thought about attending University.

I was proud as punch at Terrin's accomplishment, though ghost cat, Flynn, relaxing on the lounge chair nearby, didn't seem impressed in the least.

Hopefully, Flynn will stick around long enough for Iris to see him!

Iris Wainwright has started tests on Terrin to see if she can determine the cause of his hunger and bladder issues.

And strictly for the advancement of science, she's now living here on the farm, which was a blessing in disguise, as later that night Maisy Miller passed away.

Iris didn't know Maisy very well, but I have a feeling that missing out on seeing two ghosts in the same night was a bit disappointing.

Terrin was so intrigued about Iris's idea of him attending University that he took the aptitude test and secured 18 credits towards a Fine Arts degree, along with a partial scholarship of $1000 simoleans per semester.

An accomplishment that left us all feeling proud, though finding out that Iris was going to be staying with us on the farm had Terri's proud smile growing even bigger!

If only Iris's input could shed some light on Terrin's condition, all would be right in our little world here on the farm.

Entry 191: From Bad to Worse
« Reply #250 on: March 01, 2022, 11:52:43 AM »

Terrin was still flying high over his Uni entrance exams and was up at the crack of dawn the next morning helping out by gathering the eggs.

His early effort was rewarded by finally getting to meet Founder Brooke in all her ghostly glory, though I'm sure Iris will be even more disappointed on missing out on yet another ghostly manifestation.

"Founder Brooke, it's so nice to finally meet you!"

But my great-great grandmother wasn't one to stand on ceremony, especially with family.

Terrin's words of greeting had barely left his mouth when she pulled him in for a warm hug, "Call me Grandma, Terrin! And tell me all about the family!"

"Since you're here in the nursery, you already know I have a new baby brother, Joran. He doesn't do much yet, sleep and eat, mostly."

"Sounds like all the nooboos I've ever known, and I had five of them!"

"Lacey's a toddler now so she's very active and as cute as a button."

"She is! I've always loved toddler time!"

"Because you brought them up first thing, I know your siblings mean a lot to you Terrin and I'm happy that's the case. But…your grandmother…she's not treating you differently because you're well, different? Being a PlantSim and all? I've known proper sims and they can be as bad, if not worse, than snobs! And I should know as I was at the top of the snobby, diva crowd! I'm not proud of my behavior back then and I hope your grandmother hasn't done anything to be ashamed of, especially where you're concerned."

"Grandma and Grandpa have treated me well since Dad pulled me out of the garden, Grandma Brooke! I've always felt loved and cherished as part of the family. In fact, it was Grandma who wanted to grow a Forbidden Fruit! She felt it was only proper, the ultimate achievement for a gardening family!"

"I'm relieved to hear that, Terrin! I'll have to revise my opinion of proper sims. I've not visited the farm as often as I should have, to keep tabs on everyone. It seems harder and harder to leave the Netherworld as more time passes. Some ghosts never even have the desire, like my daughter Summer. She's content to be with her Nolan and leave the farm to the living. Now that I know you're being treated right, tell me all about yourself."

"I checked out the University welcome kit last night and I got this cool poster! Even better, I took the Uni aptitude test and scored enough points to earn 18 credits towards a degree in their Fine Arts program, and even got a partial scholarship of $1000 simoleans per semester!"

"Congratulations on doing so well and on your first try too!"

"Thanks, Grandma! It shocked me too. Not at my overall score, as it was pretty low at 1253, but that I maxed out the credits for their Fine Arts program. That will definitely be a plus, if I decide to attend."

"So, you're not sure about going to Uni yet?"

"It's one of the choices that I'm thinking about, thanks to my new friend Iris. But for the other choice, I really need your input Grandma!"

"My input? How can I help?"

"I love music and want to become a rock star, play my guitar and sing my heart out on stage in front of hundreds of adoring fans! I could do that well enough here in Appaloosa Plains, but Iris thinks it would be even more of an achievement if I could accomplish that in a city, like Roaring Heights, or even Bridgeport!"

Grandma Brooke seems stunned as she says, "Well, imagine that…I started off a city girl with a bad attitude, disliked the whole idea of Daddy's attempt at reforming me, but learned to love the farm, and passed it on to five generations of Swansons and counting. And now, our ultimate farming achievement, a PlantSim, namely YOU, wants to leave the farm and pursue a music career in the big city! Life sure is full of surprises! But I'd be happy to tell you what Bridgeport has to offer and warn you of its dangers as well!"

Grandma Brooke spent quite some time telling Terrin about all of her experiences in Bridgeport.

Especially the nightlife with parties in every venue, ranging from dive bars to exclusive clubs catering to the rich and famous.

She even told him about a few touch and go situations with creatures of the night!

The very idea of Terrin having to deal with such things on his own made my blood run cold!

We have vampires here in AP, but they're all hybrids, which seems to tone down their nocturnal habits as I'd never even heard of one of them hunting here in town.

I felt a little better when she added, "I've never heard of such creatures drinking from PlantSims, but I'd still avoid them, just in case! Speaking of being a PlantSim, what's it like?"

Terrin tried to keep the pride out of his voice as he said excitedly, "I leave a trail of flowers everywhere I go and now that I'm a teen I can photosynthesize outside on sunny days. I just zip right down in the soil and it feels fantastic!"

"That sounds pretty awesome! And it must free up a lot of your time, not having to eat or use the bathroom."

"It did until I started school…but on my first day I had to do both! And we haven't figured out what's causing it. That's why Iris is here! Her parents are brilliant scientists and her mom's an award-winning gardening, with Iris attesting to that as she's a PlantSim, just like me! Iris is smart, just like her parents, and she's already run some tests on me, blood and DNA samples. Now we're just waiting on the results. She's even moved in so she can observe my daily activities firsthand."

"Sounds like you really like the girl."

"Iris is terrific and I'm happy to call her my friend."

"Just a friend?"

"She's a bit older than me Grandma and she's got a boyfriend back in Sunset Valley. She's already been accepted at SimU but she's a little disappointed that her boyfriend hasn't been accepted yet, since he's more interested in sports than academics, and his grades aren't the best. If I decide to go, I could look her up when I get there, and we'd be able to hang out!"

"As friends?"

"Unless Iris's relationship status changes…"

"Aahh, I thought there might be more than just feelings of friendship, on your part anyway."

"Maybe, but I'm not acting on them and putting our friendship in jeopardy. It's too important to me."

"You're very mature for your age Terrin. Much more mature than I was even as a young adult! I hope Iris can discover what's going on with your hunger and bladder needs and fix them!"

"Me too, Grandma, me too!"

As soon as Terrin finished talking with Grandma Brooke, he tracked down Iris and excitedly told her all about their conversation.

"I still haven't decided on which path I want to take, Uni first, then start my music career or just jumping in feet first and moving to Bridgeport after high school graduation! Grandma really brought the city to life for me, and I can just picture myself living there and soaking up all the city has to offer, especially the concerts! Have you heard from your boyfriend? Has he been accepted to Sims U yet?"

Iris shook her head but then added with a smile, "But I'm seriously thinking of a career in medicine now! I'd always thought I would become a scientist, like Mom and Dad, but now being a doctor sounds really appealing! And it wouldn't affect my acceptance as Science and Medicine are part of the same degree program."

"What changed your mind?"

Iris's smile grew bigger as she said, "You did! Working with you and trying to solve your medical issues has had a major effect on me."

With a smile of his own, Terrin said, "Glad I could help, Iris. The best part of all this has been meeting you!"

Iris turned toward him, stepped closer and said, "I feel the same way. I guess it's because we're both PlantSims."

Confessing that to each other sealed their friendship and they were now good friends.

I'm not totally convinced it's just because they are the same species!

But before they could say or do anything else, the bus showed up and they headed off to school.

I peeked into the nursery to check on the kids and found Dad contentedly rocking Joran.

While Lacey was using the potty and chattering away a mile a minute.

"After potty, play blocks with me, G'ampa?"

"Sure, sweetie. Joran's almost asleep and then we'll play with your peg box."

With Dad spending time with Lacey, Mom snuck in a little grandma time of her own with Joren.

For a little guy, Joren had a big appetite, so it was no surprise when Mom fed him another bottle.

The day flew by and a trip into town had me witnessing Terrin's confrontation with Dayna.

She's been pressuring him to go steady since prom and he'd decided to ask her to just be friends.

This didn't go over well, and Dayna was furious!

Terrin quickly apologized, "I'm so sorry Dayna, but I'm just not ready to make that kind of commitment, not to you, or anyone. I've got some serious issues of my own I'm dealing with right now."

Hearing the sincerity in Terrin's voice, Dayna calmed down and with a sigh she said, "It's not just you thinking we should just be friends, Terrin. My parents have made it clear that being a triple hybrid, a fairy/vampire/mermaid, my life is complicated enough without becoming seriously involved with a different occult!"

I couldn't disagree with Dayna' parents take on the matter, especially since they had their own child's welfare to think about.

And even though we were all upset about Terrin's issues with his PlantSim genetics, at least we were only dealing with one species, not a child who was a triple hybrid!

But I wasn't so sure about Terrin saying he didn't want to make a commitment right now as I found him chatting and laughing with Iris outside the Research Facility.

Iris seemed fully focused on Terrin too.

So much so that later that night Terrin and Iris took the motive mobile back into town.

Not a date, just a group outing to the movies.

And I have to give them credit, the two of them kept it strictly platonic.

Keri got the two younger kids ready for bed that night.

Lacey drinking her bottle on her own, as Keri fed Joran again.

Hopefully enough to keep him sleeping through the night.

When I got back out to the living room, I discovered Terrin sitting on the couch with a bemused expression on his face.

"Something on your mind, son?"

"It's Iris, Dad…I think I like her as more than just a friend…I'm trying not to, but she's just so great…"

Uh oh, I was afraid things were heading that way!

But before we could discuss it, a high-pitched shriek interrupted us, making Terrin leap off the couch!

Iris raced into the living room trailing flowers, stopped abruptly in front of Terrin and, her voice rising in panic, exclaimed, "Terrin, I'm hungry!"

Terrin's face froze as he stammered, "What!?! How can that be Iris!?!"

Iris just shook her head saying, "I don't know, but instead of curing you, now I'm experiencing the same hunger and bladder needs!"

Horrified, Terrin asked, "So I've infected you!?!"

Her voice quaking Iris replied, "I don't know if it's an infection, but if it is Terrin, no other PlantSims will be safe."

"Then it's a good thing there aren't any others here in AP!"

"But there are PlantSims at Uni…"

"I forgot about that! What will you do about Uni, Iris? I hate that I've messed it up for you!"

"That part's easy, if we can't figure this out before my young adult birthday, I'll just have to postpone my enrollment."

"But what if we can't figure it out, Iris!?!"

Iris takes a deep breath and says, "I don't even want to think about that! If this is an infection Terrin, we'll have to stay quarantined."

"For how long?"

Iris doesn't answer but her silence speaks louder than words.

Previously, the thought of Terrin leaving home made me feel bad.

But the possibility that he and Iris may never to be able to leave is worse!!

Much, much worse.

As I stare at the words in my last entry, I feel even worse about the situation.

The Wainwrights had sent Iris here with the best of intentions, to help Terrin.

And now Iris has the same condition; before she went to bed she had to eat and use the bathroom!

Keri and I heard Iris crying in her bedroom so Keri went in to console her as best she could.

It was too late to call Iris's parents, so I have that call to look forward to in the morning.

A call I'm dreading!

We were all so hopeful waiting on Terrin's test results.

Now we're afraid that whatever is causing the genetic abnormality may be contagious.

Putting PlantSims everywhere at risk, unless a cure can be found.

If not, Terrin and Iris's futures are in jeopardy, and they may have to spend the rest of their lives here on the farm.

Entry 192: Good News and a Slip of the Tongue
« Reply #251 on: March 04, 2022, 05:15:14 PM »

The next morning, I was up early giving Joran a bottle and a cuddle.

Despite my worry over Terrin and Iris, he still needed love and attention.

And cuddling him helped calm me as much as it did him.

In the living room, I found Terrin playing guitar, his go to whether he was happy or upset.

Iris was watching him, tapping her toes to the music and seeming much happier than the night before.

When she realized I was behind her she said, "Good news, Mr. Swanson! I called Mom as soon as I was awake this morning and she quickly alleviated my fears about it being an infection. Mom said we'd definitely have some symptoms if it was and neither Terrin nor I have any symptoms, no cough, no aches or pains, and no fever. So, something else must be causing it, something we've both come into contact with or been exposed to. But to be on the safe side, she feels that we should both stay on the farm at least until the results come in from Terrin's tests. And I've sent samples of my own blood and DNA to Mom's lab so she can compare them to the ones she's done over the years, and with Terrin's, to pinpoint the issue."

I heaved a sigh of relief and said, "That's better news than I expected Iris! But I should probably call your parents and apologize."

"For what, Mr. Swanson?"

"For putting you and your future in jeopardy! You came here to help find a cure for Terrin and now you're experiencing the same issues!"

Iris smiled and said, "No need Mr. Swanson. Mom doesn't blame you. She's keeping my condition to herself because my dad doesn't handle stuff like this well. He tends to freak out under stressful situations. And after a good night's sleep I've had a chance to think it over rationally, and Mom's right, with no symptoms it's highly unlikely that it's an infection.  We just need to be patient and leave it in Mom's more than capable hands. She'll look over our blood work and DNA samples and contact us as soon as she has some definite answers. But if it came down to it, spending the rest of my life here in AP with another PlantSim, my best friend, I could think of worse fates!"

Iris's mood had improved so much that she was the first one to get into the party spirit when Mom blew out Joran's candles.

The rest of us joined in soon enough, even one of the gardeners.

When the sparkles disappeared, Joran was a toddler.

And quite the handsome little man, if I do say so myself.

Keri and I both smiled down at our youngest son.

And then Keri laughed when he pulled his finger out of his nose and examined it!

"Well, he's definitely my son, doing something inappropriate like that!"

Instead of frowning, Mom just smiled and said, "Toddlers will be toddlers!"

Moms really mellowed over the years, about stuff like that anyway.

But she still whisked Joran away for a 'proper' photo and he's the cutest little guy.

He's got dark hair like both Keri and I but he has her beautiful blue eyes.

His nose is definitely Singleton, just like Lacey's and Keri's.

And just like Keri and most of us Swansons, he loves the outdoors, along with loving the heat.

A perfect trait for a future gardener when summer harvesting is it's hottest.

Then Mom settled him down at the blocks table so he could get to know his sister better.

Lacey took her big sister duties seriously and said, "This is a red block. It's a tiangle and has three sides."

Joran held up a block of his own and looked expectantly at his sister, who obliged by saying, "That one's blue. It's a square. They have four sides."

I know I'm biased but cutest.kids.ever!

Then Mom started Joran on his potty training as we still had a big night ahead of us.

Because Joran wasn't the only one celebrating a birthday.

Mia and Anoki's youngest, their twins, had just become teens.

So, our family headed across town to offer our congratulations.

Leo came outside to greet us, and we were all struck by the thrift store look he aged up in.

Inside, his twin Joy had fared much better.

She was a pretty girl with Anoki's coloring and an itch to travel!

Leo cleaned up well.

And though he was named after Grandpa Leonard, he has the Swanson red hair, just like his mother Mia.

For twins they are definitely opposites, when it comes to their looks anyway.

Dad spent some time chatting with Leo.

"Well, well, my boy, you've certainly gown! Happy Birthday! It's been too long since we visited. Let's go inside and you can tell me all about yourself."

"I'm not big on crowds, Grandpa. Do you mind if we chat out here?"

"Not at all, Leo, I love being outside, especially if fishing is involved. There's nothing like watching the sun rise over the calm waters early in the morning!"

"I haven't done much fishing Grandpa…"

"We'll have to fix that my boy! Come over to the farm and we can fish in our pond. Maybe plan a fishing trip to Cinnamon Crest Falls this fall. There's some beautiful color there that time of year!"

"That sounds awesome, Grandpa! I'd love to see if I could capture it on canvas!"

"Another artist in the family! That works too, Leo. Your grandmother would love some more artwork to hang on the walls, besides my fish trophies. She doesn't think those are proper at all!"

"I don't think I have that kind of talent yet, Grandpa…"

"Give it time, young man, practice makes perfect!"

The rest of us chatted in the house.

Mia and Anoki were doing well, and their farm and stables were thriving.

They'd made quite the name for themselves since they'd moved here after their marriage.

Moon produce and horses were known far and wide throughout Sim Land.

Mia quipped, "Can you believe what they're willing to pay for organically grown broccoli in Bridgeport!?! We could live off the sale of that alone!"

Keanu laughed and said, "That works for me! Broccoli is my least favorite vegetable!"

Mom made a beeline for Joy, eager to get to know the pretty young woman her granddaughter had become.

"It's good to see you Grandma! It's been a while."

"It has child, it has. Happy birthday! You look so grown up and that outfit is beautiful. Perfectly appropriate for a girl your age. You have superb taste! Now tell me what you've been up to since I was here last!"

Joy preened at the compliments and said, "Thanks, Grandma, I try my best! Not like some of the girls I've seen in high school, who just throw on any old thing! I'm a bit more discerning than that. I mean, I know we live in farm and ranch country, but you don't have to dress like a slob! I refuse to associate with anyone who does!"

I didn't say anything, but Joy's words made it clear that she definitely takes after Founder Brooke!

With all of us at the Moon Farm and Stables, that left Terrin and Iris on their own.

But I felt badly about that, so Keri and I headed home early to check on them.

Only to find them soaking in the hot tub together.

Now that Iris and her mom were ruling out an infection, the two teens were back to discussing future plans.

"I've always loved gardening and that would come in handy for a career in the sciences, but as a doctor my botanical knowledge would be useful too, to diagnosis and treat my patients."

"And now that your Uni plans are back on track, you can delve into both science and medicine and then decide after graduation which field you want to focus on."

"That's my plan! What about you? Now that both paths are open for you again, is it going to be Uni or Bridgeport?"

"I'm still open to either path. But I must admit, the idea of enjoying the nightlife and concerts in Bridgeport does sound more appealing than hitting the books and studying for several semesters! I'm not quite the student you are!"

"You sell yourself short, Terrin! I really think you'd enjoy Uni and get a lot out of it. And you could always go to Bridgeport between terms or on Spring Break. Better yet, maybe check out Uni and Bridgeport over a couple of long weekends and see which one appeals to you more!"

"That's a great idea! I never thought of that. I tend to focus on just my music, but you see the bigger picture, look at all the options out there and fit them all into the plan. I think that's what I love most about you Iris!"

With the big L word hanging in the air between them, both teens looked away.

Terrin staring silently into the bubbling water, while Iris popped a foot out and said, "Getting a little pruney… looks like enough soak time for me!"

I decided to help them out and called from the porch, "We're home! Mia and Anoki were both sad you couldn't visit, and Mia sent hugs. Leo said he'd see you at school on Monday, if you guys are freed from quarantine. Joy said that if you are contagious in any way, no matter how small, stay home! If either of you is hungry, Keanu sent broccoli home with us. If that doesn't appeal, we also have birthday cake."

"Cake sounds good, Dad. We'll be right in."

Iris frowned, "Who sends broccoli home after a party?"

Terrin laughed and said, "Keanu. He doesn't like it and he's always trying to pawn his off on me when they serve it at school."

"Wouldn't it be easier just to not take any?"

"It would, but since his parents provide the produce for the school, they always make sure he gets an extra helping!"

Iris laughed at that and said, "Let's go have some cake, hold the broccoli!"

This had both of them roaring with laughter and put their friendship on a solid footing again.

Joran had his birthday so now we have two toddlers in the house.

And we celebrated with gusto as Iris's Mom, Susan Wainwright, doesn't think Terrin and Iris's issues are contagious, though she recommended they stay quarantined until she checks the results of their blood and DNA tests.

We even got to catch up with the Moon family after Leo and Joy aged to teens.

But that left Terrin and Iris on their own and Terrin let the 'L' word slip!

Not in a direct way, but one that could have affected their friendship, one I'd hate to see ruined as they're the only PlantSim either of them knows.

Hopefully, the teens test results will come back soon, and we'll know more about what we're dealing with.

But my biggest concern now is not Terrin's hunger and bladder issues.

It's trying to keep him from crossing a line with Iris that could not only ruin their friendship but lead to heartbreak.

Entry 193: A Crucial Call
« Reply #252 on: March 16, 2022, 09:35:20 PM »

Dad was up early and took care of Joran, helping him use the potty.

And indulging in some tickle time with his youngest grandson.

Then he introduced Joran to the spring rider, which was a bit hit.

Since it was such a beautiful morning, he even persuaded Joran to take a few steps.

I watched my youngest son with a smile, which faded just a bit when I heard the sounds of a guitar.

The poignant notes reflected the players innermost feelings; a bit sad but trying to be optimistic.

The source was Terrin, of course, who was enjoying the warm morning playing a bluesy song on the front porch.

His biggest fan, Iris, was watching him and enjoying the music.

"I'll be right back Terrin, just going to change and…grab something to eat."

Despite Iris's reassurances that she, and her mother, didn't blame me for her condition, hearing those words still made me feel bad.

After eating, Iris headed back out to the front porch to watch Terrin play again.

But just as she got outside, her phone rang.

Iris answered eagerly and her first words clued me in as to why, "So what's the verdict? What did you find out!?!"

Then Iris said, "Sorry. Hi, Mom! Now tell me everything you discovered!"

Iris listened intently for several minutes.

"So we're free to leave the farm? Go wherever we want without putting anyone else in danger?"

Then she threw her hand up and exclaimed, "Best. News. Ever! I knew you'd come through for us, Mom!"

When Iris got off the phone, she witnessed the happy dance Terrin was performing!

"I guess you heard?"

"Only the part where we can leave the farm, and I agree, it's the best news ever!"

I couldn't help myself and just had to run outside and say, "That's such a relief, Iris, that you two can leave, but what about treating your condition? Did your Mother come up with a solution?"

"I was just about to give Terrin the details, Mr. Swanson. Feel free to listen in."

So I settled down in the lounge chair on the front porch and listened to Iris's explanation.

"Mom hasn't figured out what's causing our condition or a treatment yet, but she's ruled several things out. As she suspected, since we didn't have any symptoms, it's not an infection, either viral or bacterial, which is why we don't have to stay quarantined. It's not airborne or something in the water, either."

"Could it be something that affects plants? And with us being PlantSims, we're being affected too?"

"Good theory, but Mom says it's not botanical in nature either. The residue she found in both our blood samples is one she's never seen before, but our DNA is still intact. So, with all of those things ruled out, she said it has to be something that we've both come into contact with."

Thoughtfully, Iris adds, "Something that doesn't really hurt us, but plays havoc with our natural ability to absorb nutrients ambiently and utilize fluids more efficiently. If I just stay focused I can figure this out…"

"No, Iris. What you need is a break! Don't psychologists say that sometimes you need to take a mental break so that you can refocus?"

"You're right, Terrin! What did you have in mind? Mom said we could go wherever we wanted to…maybe a movie?"

Terrin grinned as he said, "Think bigger, Iris!"

Then he leaned over and whispered in Iris's ear.

An hour or so later, Iris was back on the porch, all decked out in a formal dress.

Her trail of flowers adding a flair that made her the picture of perfection.

She breathlessly asked, "Do I look okay? Am I late!?!"

One look at Terrin's face and I knew he was a goner!

He gulped and said, "You look absolutely perfect…"

Then he headed down the stairs, adding, "And you're right on time as your chariot has just arrived, Miss Wainwright."

And arrive it had in all it's white stretch limo glory!

"How on earth did Terrin manage to hire a ride like that on such short notice!?!"

Mom said, "The Swanson name and checkbook can work miracles, Scott! These two deserve to be treated like royalty after all they've been through and a limo is the only proper ride for prom! Poo on being frugal, I'm splurging on my grandson!"

"Thanks, Mom. I just hope Terrin comes through this with his heart in one piece."

"Now that's something simoleans can't help with. But better to have loved and lost…oh, who am I kidding! Losing a love is the worst! But maybe these two will beat the odds."

With all the worry over Terrin and Iris, we'd overlooked something important.

Lacey's birthday!

So once the limo left, we placed a cake on the table and quickly lit the candles.

Lacey was wide-eyed with fascination as she stared at the flames.

She may look like a Singleton, but there's definitely some Dean blood racing through her veins!

The sparkles hit quickly once Keri put her down on the floor.

And moments later our daughter became a child grabbing her first piece of cake!

With the Dean blood coming through loud and clear as she was now brave!

I think Mom was a little shocked that it was her brave trait that Lacey chose rather than being proper.

But Mom got over it soon enough and joined Lacey at the kitchen table with her own piece of cake.

"Now that you're old enough, you can sleep upstairs in your Aunt Mia and Aunt Bella's old bedroom. It'll be so much fun having a little girl your age in the house again! As soon as we get a chance, I'll take you shopping for some new clothes. A pretty dress for parties. A comfortable outfit to exercise in."

Scooping up her last forkful of cake, Lacey said, "That sounds great, Grandma! Can I choose my favorite color, lime, like my new nightie?"

"Of course! We can even redecorate your room in that color too, if that's what you want."

"Sure, Grandma, that sounds like fun! My own room in my favorite color."

Across town, two other family members were chatting too.

"That was the most fun at a dance that I've ever had, Iris! And you blew the competition away for Prom Queen! Congratulations!"

"Thanks, Terrin. You didn't do so badly yourself, winning the King's crown! It really was fun and I had a great time!"

On impulse, Terrin wrapped his arms around Iris and hugged her tightly.

Iris hugged him back, but pulled away quickly, saying, "There's the curfew siren, we'd better head home!"

As Terrin and Iris left the school, I spotted someone who looked vaguely familiar.

"Shayna? I almost didn't recognize you! I hadn't realized you had a birthday."

"Shawn and I celebrated our birthdays a few days ago, Uncle Scott, in Roaring Heights! Mom had a concert scheduled there so we made it a family trip."

"Belated birthday wishes, then. Did you have fun at prom?"

"It was okay…kind of lame, but watching kids get rejected for dances was fun."

"Did you get to spend some time with Terrin?"

"You've got to be kidding, Uncle Scott! As far as Terrin was concerned there was no one else at prom but Iris! He never left her side and they danced every dance. They even got voted Prom King and Queen! For once, the court got that match right!"

"Match? Terrin and Iris are just good friends."

Shayna snorted, "You must be blind, Uncle Scott! I just became a teenager and I can tell that Terrin's head over heels in love!"

My own heart plummeted as Shayna's words confirmed my worst fears.

Lamely, I said, "Well, goodnight. You better get home before curfew."

"Oh, I don't intend to do that! This school is just itching to have egg on the doors! Or frogs hopping everywhere! A good prank is what makes a prom! And I'm going to make sure this is one prom no one will ever forget!"

I had a feeling it was one Terrin would never forget either…

Lacey had her child birthday and starts school on Monday.

Along with that good news, Terrin and Iris are no longer quarantined at the farm and Iris's mother has ruled out a myriad of things that are not causing their genetic issues.

To celebrate, they went to prom and had a great time together, deepening Terrin's feelings for Iris even more.

But I'm afraid that Terrin's feelings are going to get hurt just as deeply.

Because Iris is bound to figure out the cause, sooner rather than later.

Once she does, she'll be heading back to Sunset Valley and her boyfriend, and then on to SimU with him, to continue her life plan.

A plan that doesn’t include Terrin.

In my desperation to help my son, I may have done just the opposite and opened him up to heartbreak!

It was late, but Terrin and Iris were keyed up from all the events that day.

From Susan Wainwright's good news about their conditions to winning crowns at prom.

They had to let off some steam somehow, so they grabbed pillows and started beating each other with them in the garden!

And laughing hysterically as feathers flew in a cloud around them.

Seeing the two of them having so much fun together, I decided I was making a mountain out of a molehill and headed for the house.

But I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard Terrin ask shyly, "Iris? Would it be okay if I kissed you goodnight?"

Iris hesitated and then said, "I don't think that's a good idea, Terrin. Not the kind of kiss you mean anyway."

"What other kind of kiss is there?"

Iris leaned forward slightly and blew gently across her palm.

To my amazement, flower petals burst from her hand and flew towards Terrin!

Terrin laughed and said, "They tickle! What was that Iris!?!'

"It's called a Flower Kiss, but be careful, they can pack a punch!"

Terrin, looking a little dazed, blinked a few times and then asked, "Can I do that too?"

Iris giggled and said, "I don't know. Can you!?!"

Terrin blew across his hand, like Iris had, but instead of a bunch of flower petals, one lone petal flew through the air and landed on Iris's cheek.

"It's harder than it looks!"

"It is. But that wasn't bad for your first try. Do you want to try again?"

It was obvious that Terrin did, more than he'd wanted anything in his life, but instead he said, "I'd better not, Iris."

Iris nodded, stepped forward, and quickly placed a kiss on Terrin's cheek, "You're so sweet, Terrin. Thanks for a wonderful evening. I'll never forget it!"

I doubted Terrin would either.

My heart heavy after watching the bittersweet scene between Terrin and Iris, I headed inside.

Hearing voices in the nursery, I wandered in and found Keri was potty training Joran.

"Joran's still up?"

"We've put him in his crib several times but he keeps waking up. Then he says he has to potty, then he wants a bottle, and a bit later, he has to go potty again!"

It wasn't often I heard frustration in Keri's voice, especially when it came to our children, but it was more than evident now.

Afterward, with Dad's urging, Joran showed her just how close he was to walking on his own.

"You can do it little man! Just like we practiced. Show your mommy what a big boy you are!"

By the time Mom came in to see what all the fuss was about, Joran had walked clear across the room into Keri's waiting arms!

I was so proud of him!

We all were.

Dad was crowing, "That's my boy!"

And Mom had the most approving look on her face I've ever seen, her eyes bright and her lips curved into a smile.

As day dawned, Keri had given up on getting Joran to go to sleep and was trying to teach him a few words.

But he wasn't in the mood and threw his first tantrum!

"Fire bad! Fire bad!"

Then Lacey lost track of the time and almost missed the bus on her first day of school.

She made it, but it wasn't the best start for her first day and she frowned as she asked, "Why didn't you two tell me the bus was here!?!"

When the teens didn't answer, I stepped back to see what was going on and almost fell off the bus in shock!

Iris was giving Lacey a look that said, "Don't mess with me brat!"

And Terrin had a scowl on his face that could have curdled milk!

Before I could find my tongue, the bus driver motioned me off so he could continue his route.

What on earth was going on with the kids today?

First Joran, then Lacey, and then both teens, all of them grumpy and out of sorts.

Definitely a moody Monday!

After his nap, Joran was in a much better mood and eager to increase his vocabulary.

One of his favorite words was, 'fishies', so he's definitely a Swanson!

He liked 'wiggly worms' too!

He said 'party' but not with much enthusiasm.

And odd as it sounds, 'Grim' made him giggle so he kept repeating it!

When the teens got home from their after school activities, they seemed in better moods too.

Terrin's smile was even back.

Iris glanced over at the parking spaces and said, "I didn't know you had two motive mobiles, Terrin."

Terrin shrugged and replied, "We have three actually. No big deal."

But Iris had stopped dead in her tracks and repeated, "Motive Mobile. MOTIVE Mobile! Motives are needs!"

She raced up behind Terrin, spun him around and grabbed his hand, shouting, "That's it, Terrin! It has to be!"

"What's it, Iris? What are you talking about?"

"Quick, Terrin. When did you ride in a motive mobile for the first time!?!"

"That's easy! Right after my child birthday. I asked Mom to tutor me so I could impress my teachers that Monday, but it was Love Day, so we all went to a party at my Aunt Bella's house in the motive mobile."

"And when was the first time you felt hungry or had to use the bathroom?"

"The next day, in school. I remember because I was so embarrassed. My parents had explained to my teachers that I didn't eat or use the bathroom and I was starving at lunch time and had to use the rest room three times that afternoon!"

"It fits, Terrin! It all fits! You rode in the motive mobile the day before, to the party and back. Then the next day, at lunch time, you were starving and desperate for a bathroom. And the night we went to the movies, you drove a motive mobile, so I rode in it twice, and later that night, I was hungry!"

"But motive mobiles fill your motives UP, Iris, not make them go down…"

"For most Sims yes, but we're genetically different, we don't eat or eliminate like they do! But the Motive Mobile doesn't know that so it fills up our hunger and bladder motives just like it's supposed to. And what goes UP must come DOWN, so it messes up our natural abilities!"***

Iris continues, "But you didn't understand that as a child. You didn't know what hunger felt like until you were starving."

Terrin catches Iris's excitement and shouts, "I didn't understand, I just felt awful, my stomach hurt, and it was embarrassing to ask for the bathroom…Oh, Iris you've figured it out! You're brilliant, Iris! Simply brilliant! Just like your parents!"

"Don't sing my praises yet, Terrin! A theory, even one that fits all the facts, is still just a theory. I've got to get to the lab!"

Iris changed into her career outfit in record time and was sprinting for her car when Terrin asked, "I was going to work on my homework, but is there something I could do to help?"

Iris didn't stop her breakneck pace, just shouted, "Meet me at the lab as soon as you can! And Terrin, whatever you do, DON'T use a motive mobile!"

Iris was waiting outside for us and as soon as Terrin was within reach, she pulled him in for a hug.

"My motive mobile theory stood up under my tests, Terrin. All of them! There's nothing organically wrong with either of us, just motive mobile residue that's interfering with our natural abilities!"

"I never doubted for a moment that you wouldn't figure it out, Iris! Like I said, you're brilliant, just like the rest of the Wainwright family! And I'll be forever in your debt."

Terrin paused, took a deep breath and asked, "So does that mean you'll head back home to Sunset Valley now?"

Iris thought for just a moment and said, "Soon, but not tonight. Since it took about 24 hours for you to feel the negative affects after using the motive mobile, I should stick around at least that long after I remove the motive mobile residue from our blood to make sure it works, and document everything. As a scientist, it's my duty to follow through to the end of the project."

"Of course. I understand, Iris."

"But we can stay in touch, Terrin! You can visit me in Sunset Valley and at SimU! And in between visits we can chat, text, or e-mail. I don't want to lose you as a friend, Terrin. Sims like us, we need to stick together!"

Terrin's hesitation was slight, but it was there, as he mumbled, "Sure. Of course, we'll stay in touch, Iris. So, the stuff you have to do to our blood, you'll start that after school tomorrow?"

"I think it would be best to do it now, Terrin. Since you've been repeatedly using a motive mobile since you were a child, it's residue has built up in your system. It may take more than 24 hours to restore your natural abilities, so the sooner we get started the better."

Terrin just nods and heads inside.

But the unspoken words hang in the air as the sooner their issues are resolved, the sooner Iris can go home.

PlantSim Iris Wainwright*** has solved the mystery of Terrin's condition!

Without a doubt, the Wainwrights of Sunset Valley all have brilliant minds!

But with the mystery solved, Iris will be heading back to Sunset Valley soon.

Iris told Terrin they can stay in touch as friends, of course, especially since PlantSims are so scarce in Simland.

And I don't think Terrin minds the thought of keeping in touch.

It's the friends part that's his own personal stumbling block as he's made it clear that he likes Iris much more than just as a friend, or even a best friend.

But even with all of that going on between them, finally knowing what's caused Terrin's issues is a huge relief and weight off my mind!

***Author's Notes:
A big thank you to MrsFlynn and MrsGoodWrench for providing the solution to Terrin's nerve-wracking hunger and bladder issues! I was pulling my hair out, removing mods, cc, resetting Terrin, even removing his Plantsim status and putting it back on using NRaas mods, trying anything and everything to fix him!
The fix ended up being super easy, just a quick reset of both Terrin and Iris.
As once Iris rode in the motive mobile she was affected too.
I also moved all three of the family's motive mobiles into the family inventory, so there was no chance that Terrin or Iris would use one again!

And for sharing teen PlantSim Iris Wainwright with me, another big thank you to Cheezey!
Author of the Brilliant Minds: The Wainwrights of Sunset Valley story.
I love Iris's character in the story and immediately thought how perfect Iris would be for Terrin!
So Terrin not only got to meet a PlantSim, but Iris's own brilliant mind made her a crucial and pivotal character in my story.

Entry 195: Spending Time with Family
« Reply #254 on: March 24, 2022, 12:12:35 PM »

"I'm glad that Iris figured out what was wrong with her and Terrin, Daddy! They sure were grumpy this morning and almost made me miss the bus!"

"I don't think the two are connected Lace, but everyone's feeling better now, for the most part."

"Does that mean you could help me with my homework?"

"Sure, Lace, I'd be happy to help. But your mom might be a better choice. She's the smart one!"

"Well, since Terrin's better and Joran's napping, I thought maybe you could spend some time with me, Daddy."

Lacey's words shot a pang of guilt through me as I knew she was right.

I'd been so focused on her brothers; I hadn't paid her much attention since her birthday!

"Then let's sit right down here and work on your homework!"

"Really, Daddy? That would be great!"

I was deep in thought over Lacey's last question when a cry came from the nursery.

Lacey stopped writing and said with a sigh, "That's Joran. It's okay if you have to get him, Daddy."

But the next thing we knew, Mom came breezing past us with Joran.

Joran wiggled in Mom's arms and plaintively cried, "Daddy! Want Daddy!"

But Mom didn't even slow down as she said to him, "Daddy's busy with Lacey right now. Grandma's got you. I think it's time for some food in your highchair, young man."

Jordan stopped wiggling and said, "Food? Eat! Eat!"

Mom smiled and said, to us, "I've got this. Joran can't resist food! You two keep working on Lacey's homework."

"Thanks, Mom. I really appreciate it! We're almost done and it's been fun doing something so…routine. In fact, I think Lace and I should make a habit of spending time together after school, every day!"

Beside me, Lacey trembled with excitement, and asked, "Really, Daddy? Every day? Just you and me?"

I felt guilty that she had to ask such questions, but glad that she was enthused by my offer, and replied, "It's a date, Lace! Whatever you want to do, every day after school, we'll do it together!"

Seeing my daughters eyes light up, I added, "And doing homework together doesn't count. So when we're done, pick something fun!"

After feeding him, Mom kept Joran occupied in the nursery helping him with his music skill.

To my surprise, the first thing Lacey wanted to do together was learn to bake in the toy oven!

She stirred the muffin batter vigorously, asking, "Like this, Daddy?"

I smiled and couldn't keep the pride out of my voice, "Just like that, Lacey! I can't wait to try one of you blueberry muffins!"

"These muffins are for tomorrow's breakfast. That way they'll be all baked and I won't be so late getting on the bus, like I was today!"

"You were late because you made your own muffins?"

Lacey shrugged, "It took longer than I thought it would, I guess since I didn't really know what I was doing."

"Well, you've got my help now and we can bake a batch every night, if you want. And we've got beginner cook books in one of the bookcases. Reading one will definitely help, give you basic knowledge on measuring and ingredients. Then putting that knowledge into practice will help your skill grow even more!"

"You know a lot about cooking, Daddy! I guess that's why Mommy told me you'd be the best teacher for that."

"Your mother said that? But she's the smart one…"

A laugh out on the side porch had me going outside to see what was going on.

Keri was out there and she didn't even try to hide the fact that she'd been listening as she smiled and said, "Smart enough to know that your pancakes taste way better than mine! You know you're the cook in this family, Scott. None of the rest of us even come close to your talent in the kitchen!"

"Lacey's determined to become just as good."

I sniffed the aroma of fresh baked muffins wafting through the door and added, "She's already got some baking skill!"

Keri's smile softened and her eyes took on a suspicious shine as she said, "She asked me what you like to do. She wanted to make sure that she picked something you would enjoy too!"

I felt my own eyes tearing up and said, "Our daughter's a terrific kid!"

"All our children are wonderful, Scott! And now with Iris's breakthrough, we can get back to enjoying them without worrying so much."

Iris sure wasn't doing any worrying!

In fact, she was all dressed up again and heading back into town.

"I'm on such a high Mr. Swanson that I just know I won't have any trouble winning that debate for class President!"

"But you're leaving soon, so if you won, you wouldn't have the position long."

"No, but it's more a matter of personal pride, knowing I have the skill to win! And I can keep the position as long as I'm here, then graciously step down and let my opponent take over!"

Iris really did have a plan for every aspect of her of life, but I hoped that wouldn't stop her from taking unexpected paths.

"Well, good luck! I hope you win!"

Inside in the nursery, Terrin had scooped up Joran and was hugging him tight.

"I'm going to be okay, little brother! And now I can spend more time with you and Lacey, instead of being so pre-occupied with what's going on with me!"

To show just how relieved he was, Terrin paid close attention as his baby brother chatted away, even though I'm sure he didn't understand half of Joran's words.

But I didn't need words to see just how happy both of my sons were as their bond as brothers deepened.

A sight that left me feeling happier than I'd had in a long time.

And when Joran's toddler laughter rang out, as Terrin tickled him, my joy knew no bounds.

We were, once again, one big happy family!

Our happiness increased when Iris won the debate at school and was honored with the title of Class President.

When Iris got home I'd stepped out onto the porch to congratulate her, but then we saw colored lights in the sky.

I guess it was Iris's scientific mind that couldn't pass up such an opportunity as she ran to investigate them!

I stared up at the lights in the sky in wonder.

But Iris's reaction wasn't at all what I expected as I heard her exclaim, "No way! Don't do this!"

And it seemed that whatever, or whoever, was causing the lights actually listened to her as the lights disappeared.

But my relief was short-lived as a bright beam of light surrounded Iris and pulled her up into the sky!

Moments later, it was gone.

And so was Iris!

I stared at the empty yard and my heart plummeted.

How on earth would I tell her parents that Iris was gone!?!

And not just gone, but abducted by an otherworldly beam of light!

But as I stood there, frozen in shock and horror, an odd whirring noise sounded from above.

And my shock only increased as a vehicle I could only describe as a space ship hovered in the road.

Then a strange looking creature, and thankfully, Iris, materialized nearby.

Aliens in Appaloosa Plains!?!

Who in Simland would believe that!?!

But before I could react in any way, the alien disappeared in a shimmer of light.

I finally had the presence of mind to race towards Iris and was standing in the road in front of her when Iris's words penetrated my brain.

She was standing so still, I thought she was in shock.

But then I noticed her clenched hands and realized that Iris was furious!

She shouted, "No! No! NO! They promised! They PROMISED never to do that again!"

Puzzled I asked, "Who promised, Iris? Did you know that creature? Was it really an alien that beamed you up and returned you in a…spaceship!?!

My words brought Iris back to her senses, much quicker than I would have recovered after such an unsettling experience, though she still stumbled a bit to get the words out.

"I…I can't tell you that! I can't tell you anything without breaking a promise of my own!"

"I don't understand what just happened or why you can't tell me, but I'm not going make you break a promise. Can you at least tell me if you're okay?"

"I'll be fine, Mr. Swanson. In time anyway. But I need to call my family right away! To let them know what happened. They won't be any happier about it than I am!"

"I don't doubt that one bit, Iris! I don't even know what happened really and I'm not happy! But let's go inside and you can make that phone call in safety…in case he…she…they come back!"

Keri and I finally felt that we could relax and enjoy our children without worrying quite so much.

But we spoke too soon as Iris was pulled into the sky in a beam of light and returned by an alien in a spaceship!

But Iris's rage and her odd words, along with her vow of silence, have me thinking that the Wainwright family has a much broader experience of the universe than I do.

One that includes otherworldly encounters with spaceships and aliens!

No wonder they didn't hesitate to send their teenage daughter to Appaloosa Plains to research a PlantSim with mysterious hunger and bladder issues.

That would seem like a walk in the park if spaceships and aliens are commonplace occurrences in their lives!

But, hopefully, we can put such things behind us now and truly relax.

Especially if Iris's breakthrough really does restore their natural PlantSim abilities.
