I heard the front door so I know Winter made it home in time for Breeze's birthday party.
But I'm not messing this birthday up for Breeze so I focus on helping her blow out the candles.
But when Winter starts cheering and yelling happy birthday, I can't resist a look over my shoulder.
And when I see Winter's new slim and trim shape, I'm so shocked that I almost drop Breeze!
I knew she wanted to lose a few pounds, trim down, but wow!
I never imagined a few hours at the gym could do that!
Then I realize I'm still staring at Winter and everyone's waiting on me.
And Breeze is looking at me with a trembling lip, whether it's due to the precarious position in my arms or all the party noise, I'm not sure.
So I quickly place Breeze on the floor and reassure her saying, "It's okay sweetie. Everyone's happy for you because it's your birthday. Parties are fun."
"Parties fun?" she asks still a bit nervous.
"Oh, they're lots of fun. Your grandma loves them!"
And as the sparkles start to fade and our school-age child stands before us, I realize I might have been a bit over zealous in my sell on parties.
Because Breeze picks the Party Animal trait!
Nolan's still clapping and cheering for Breeze's birthday but Winter's smiling about Breeze's new trait.
Mom, on the other hand, sobered up quick and her look has me wondering what's in store for us as the parent's of a Party Animal?
After her cake, I find Breeze sitting quietly in the kitchen chatting with her IF doll.
I didn't want to interrupt, so I waited quietly and heard her say, "Rags, you know I've loved you and played with you for a long time. But now I'm a big girl and it's time for me to move on to big girl toys. I'll be going to school and meeting other kids my age and I don't want you to feel left out. So I've got a special plan for you. But I'll never forget you. I hope my kids get a special doll just like you one day."
I don't want her to know I've overheard something so private, so I step back into the hallway and say loudly, "Breeze, we're waiting to give you your presents, have you finished your cake yet?"
Her presents are mostly new clothes but she picks out a new hairstyle too.
A cute short cut with a headband, pink, of course.
With the weather still cold, she puts on her new winter nightie and comes back out to the front nursery/sitting room and heads straight for her grandmother.
"Grandma, I know it's my birthday and I'm the one that's supposed to receive gifts but I have a present for you. A very special one that I hope you'll keep safe for me for a long time."
Mom says, "Well, don't you just know how to make a party extra special! I've never gotten a present at someone else's birthday."
But mom can't quite hide her look of surprise as she opens it and she says, "Oh, honey, I'll treasure this always and think of you, my special girl, every time I see it."
When mom's eyes meet mine, it's then that I know what Breeze has done.
She's given the doll she's loved since birth away, put her baby toys behind her, and stepped into a whole new world as a school girl.
I'm so overcome I fling myself into Grandpa Howard's arms and hug him tightly.
He laughs and says, "Well, I don't know what this is all about but I never pass up a hug from a beautiful girl!"
*then he whispers so only I can hear* "You have a very special daughter dear. Now smile so she doesn't see her mother with tears in her eyes on her birthday."
I do just as Grandpa Howard asks and plaster a big smile on my face, then duck my head and wipe my tears away on his jacket.
Grandpa holds me tight for a moment longer, then when he knows I've pulled myself back together, he
releases me and says, "Why don't we go check on my new great-grandson before I head home?"
The next morning I find Winter and tell her I really want to do her YA photo and bio, but her words catch me by surprise.
"You're shocked at my new figure aren't you, Summer? I am a bit too. I wasn't expecting such dramatic results so soon, or at all really. I'm not quite used to the change myself. It's like half of me is gone!"
I'm so embarrassed that I'm so transparent, I can't even look at her.
I finally mumble, "It's not you Winter. You look fantastic! Like Rayne and Autumn, so pretty, so…thin. I'm so embarrassed that you noticed my jealousy. It just makes me feel….the odd one out. When you became a child and you were like dad, like me, it made me feel better, having a sister that was 'pleasingly plump'."
"But I wasn't like you Summer, I was bigger, and even more so as a teen. Unhealthily big. I was having trouble breathing just carrying the extra weight. You can't imagine the relief, to take a breathe and not have it hurt. Summer, I swear I didn't do it to make you feel bad! I was just trying to be more fit, more healthy."
"Oh, I know that little sister, you don't have a mean-spirited bone in your… new little body!" I say with a shaky laugh. Adding, "I never knew your weight was making it hard to breathe. I've never felt like that, well, during my pregnancies a bit, but now I feel fine."
"And you look fine too. You look like you, Summer. The perfect blend of mom and dad. Not thin, not overly 'plump' like I was, just perfectly you. But if you did want to lose a bit of weight, I'd gladly work out with you."
"Really? You know, kid sister, I just may take you up on that offer one of these days! Now, your bio?"
"Okay, but not by myself. Let me find one of my nieces so you can take a cute photo of us together!"
Winter finds Rielle and picks her up while I take a photo.
So a bit late, but better late than never, we have:
Winter Swanson---young adult human
LTW: Five Star Chef
Career: Culinary
Traits: Friendly, Loves the Outdoors, Neat, Natural Cook, and Athletic
BF: Michael Gallo ---teen fairy
And Dean hasn't been ignored either.
He gets plenty of daddy time with Nolan, especially when it comes to dirty diapers.
Mom still hates that part the most and can't stop wrinkling her nose at the smell!
And lots of grandpa time too.
Dad spends a lot of his time with his new grandson holding him close and taking in that new baby fragrance.
And a lot of time rocking him, once he's fed and has a clean diaper.
I know mom would like to spend some time with him too, but she was there when dad fell asleep in the rocker while he was supposed to be watching the girls, so she's giving him all the time she can with his grandchildren.
Monday is Snowflake Day and Winter threw a gift giving party inviting all the family, including the Dean's.
As well as her boyfriend, Michael Gallo, who's had his YA birthday.
When the doorbell rings, Breeze greets our first guests, her great-grandpa Howard and her Aunt Harmony, who recently got engaged to Kris Rhoen.
Breeze enthuses about the snow swirling all around them and enjoys the bite of the frosty air as she gets to enjoy the outdoors for the first time as a child.
The guests all mingle and chat and Winter's boyfriend gets introduced to everyone.
He's updated up his wardrobe a bit as well as gotten a hairstyle more suitable to his career in medical.
You can see that Johnny's a bit stunned by the change as he's thinking about Michael's previous look!
And Michael's remembering how Johnny aged up looking so great, so I'm thinking there's a bit of rivalry between these two.
Maybe because Johnny's a genie and Michael's a fairy?
But for the family and Snowflake Day they put their differences aside which was a huge relief.
And most of the family and guests are all amazed by how grown up Breeze has become as she tried to greet everyone personally, showing off her new look as well.
The gift giving went really well with everyone getting a gift, which took quite a long time with so many guests.
Some gifts being sillier than others of course, with dad and Nolan both getting amphibi-clops plushies, of all things!
I'm sure those will be quickly placed in the toy box for the children to play with.
And the traditional gag gift of lumps of coal, for several unlucky guests, including Johnny Rhoen!
But they were all good sports about it and just laughed.
Brina Dean didn't even bother to choose a gift and said just being with family and friends was the best gift of all.
And she danced happily throughout the whole party.
I really need to invite my in-laws over more often so I can get to know them and they can spend time with their grandchildren.
I got a cute bedroom lamp, just like Rayne, Autumn, and Winter, so none of us felt like we'd gotten a worse gift than the others.
Though it was surprising all four of us got something similar.
I didn't ask but I wondered if mom had something to do with that as she's never tried to play favorites with any of us kids or her grandkids.
Breeze got two gifts, a new pink toy oven that was set up in the play area, as well as a new dollhouse.
She had our old one of course, but this new one was all hers and pink, so a special gift that way.
And she cheered in her excitement letting everyone in on just how much she liked her presents.
And even though Flynn got two gifts, he was still a bit jealous of Breeze.
Turns out that even though Carter and Mysti did their best to give him attention after the twins' birth, he still ended up feeling a bit left out and is now mean-spirited.
Even with Flynn's attitude, Mysti had a great time at the party.
But the biggest present of all this Snowflake Day was Rayne's news.
She and Johnny are expecting their first child!
Since Carter and I both have three children already, Rayne was overjoyed to be able to join us in adding to the next generation.
With the sweet motherly expression on her face, I know she's going to be a great mom.
Since they're getting up in age, our grandparents asked Winter if she'd consider moving in with them, practice as much cooking as she wants, and just give them some time with her, their youngest granddaughter.
It's not said but Winter knows they're thinking of her future, getting things set up so their property will be hers one day.
Winter asks if she can invite her boyfriend to join her and she's told that the house is definitely big enough for four, so the more the merrier.
So Winter asked Michael to join her when she moves to our grandparents' house.
He's ambitious, wants to become a surgeon one day, so having his high school sweetheart be the heir to her grandparents' property and fortune, well, that's an opportunity he's not going to pass up.
With Michael more than eager to accept her offer, she says her goodbyes.
First to mom, telling her that she's taking her grandparents up on their offer and that Michael's agreed to move in with her too.
Mom's happy that Winter accepted their offer, as it relieves her of two worries, her parents being alone at their age, and Winter being on her own at hers!
Then at bit more tearful goodbye with dad, as he hugs his youngest child, his baby close.
"You take care of yourself girl, though with all your exercise, I can see you're doing that already! And keep in touch, call and visit often, you know your mother worries."
Winter smiled at that one, "Yes dad, I know mom worries, so I'll be sure to call and visit, just to set her mind at ease."
And when I'm looking through the Snowflake Day photos I find this one with Rayne, Autumn, and Winter.
All in their formalwear and looking gorgeous!
And even though I don't look bad in the photo I found of myself, I'm still seriously thinking of taking Winter up on her offer.
It probably wouldn't hurt me to lose a few pounds.
And it might be better for the baby that Nolan and I both want!
After all, since Winter's move, there's an empty space in the house!
Breeze had her birthday and took a giant step into childhood by giving away her IF doll to mom.
Winter shocked us all, and made me a bit jealous, when she focused on working out and trimmed down to half her size!
She's offered to help me lose a few pounds, too, if I want, and I'm thinking of taking her up on her offer.
And Winter threw a fantastic Snowflake Day party and she accepted our grandparents offer to move into their home and her boyfriend Michael is joining her.
Rayne and Johnny surprised us all with the announcement of their coming child.
And with another space in the house, Nolan and I want another baby of our own!
Things are moving right along with Breeze's first day of school upon us and Nolan moving forward with his nectary.
Let's see how the next steps in our life turn out in Chapter 37: Grandkids Galore!
Coming soon.
