Chapter 35: Girl or Boy?
« Reply #76 on: October 06, 2019, 05:29:34 PM »

As my pregnancy advances, even though it's still winter, I find it harder and harder to stay cool.

So I spend a lot of time in my swimsuit.

Especially when I teach Rielle how to walk, as activity of any kind makes me even warmer.

Winter joins us for a bit as she feeds Flynn a treat.

When she wakes up, Breeze joins us and plays a sweet tune on her xylophone.

But when Rielle starts sitting down in protest, no matter how much I encourage her to walk, I realize she's had enough lessons for now and needs a break.

After a diaper change and some clean clothes, I pop Rielle into the highchair and give her some toddler food for the first time.

She gives me a big excited smile so I know she's hungry and eager to try something new.

Dad spent time with Breeze while I was busy with Rielle.

He never passes up an opportunity for some hugs and cuddles with his grandkids.

Mom doesn't either and heads out to visit Carter and Mysti and their children at their new house.

But first she makes a brief stop at the Elixir shop where she sees Agnes Crumplebottom.

It shocks mom to see Agnes looking so much older, but since mom's an elder now and Agnes is closer to Grandpa Swanson's age, well, it's to be expected.

Mom and Agnes never did become close so they just nod as Agnes is leaving the shop and mom continues on inside.

When mom told me what Agnes was wearing, not a bad looking outfit actually, I figured Agnes was having trouble with staying cool just as much as I was!

But thoughts of Agnes and her age fly out of mom's thoughts when she gets to Carter and Mysti's new home.

Mysti had designed it herself of course, and it was another amazing MrsFlynn home!

Mom got there just in time as they were just moving in.

Carter and Mysti each had a baby girl in their arms as they headed into the house.

Flynn was happily playing with his IF doll.

So mom played with Rembrandt for a few minutes.

But once she figured Flynn had enough playtime with his new doll, she picked him up for some Grandma hugs and cuddles.

"How's grandma's boy? Ready to see your new room?"

Flynn doesn't answer, but his sweet smile reminds mom of Carter so much she's filled with a burst of love.

Then she spends some time with each of her new granddaughters.

First Stephanie, who she plays with and then gives a bottle.

"How about some nosey nosey with grandma sweet one?"

She pops Stephanie into her crib in the twins new nursery and picks up Samantha.

"Grandma doesn't play favorites, so it's nosey nosey playtime for you too, Samantha."

Then she settles into a rocking chair with Samantha cuddled into her arms.

With mom taking care of the twins, Mysti gets in some mommy time with Flynn.

She doesn't want the little guy to feel left out with the arrival of his baby sisters.

When Carter showed me the photo though, I was a bit concerned with the solemn looks on both mom's and Mysti's faces.

Then Carter explained that it was right before he snapped the shot that he mentioned making their family even with another little boy.

The looks made sense then and I couldn't believe Carter would even say something like that to a woman who just had twins!

I mean, seriously, give her a minute to recover at least before springing something like that on her.

Sometimes men can be soooo thoughtless!

But then he shared photos of their new house, and I was so impressed I forgot about his thoughtless comment.

Mysti certainly outdid herself this time!

The house's curb appeal couldn't be denied with the beautiful exterior of the home, the pretty landscaping in the front yard, and the garden area just waiting for springtime and the new planting season.

And the backyard was just as appealing with a small pond that Carter just couldn't stop obsessing over.

I really liked the back covered deck and the playground.

What a wonderful idea for the children!

I'll have to mention it to Nolan and mom and dad to see if they think we could have one in our yard.

And the inside was amazing too, with a main floor that has 3 bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths plus a small laundry room.

The twins nursery was connected by a bathroom to the master for easy access.

And Flynn's bedroom has a single bed for his upcoming child birthday.

With a large living room open to the kitchen/dining area.

The 2nd floor is wide open with just Mysti's easels.

But Carter said they could add some bedrooms and another bathroom up there if they need them later on.

And the house also boasts a basement which is just being used for storage at the moment.

Mom was so caught up with visiting her grandchildren at their new home that she forgot about Winter's birthday!
(Which actually made me feel better about missing Breeze's toddler one)

But Nolan and dad and I made enough noise for a crowd.

And Winter was quite proud of her new young adult status.

She chose Athletic for her last trait and is determined to slim down a bit.

She got more of dad's genetics than even I did and just isn't happy about it.

She did pick a new hairstyle, a simple long ponytail that wouldn't get in her way for either of her hobbies, cooking or exercising.

And some new clothes in her favorite green.

She chose this outfit for everyday.

This one for her formal.

And some new outfits for swimming and sleeping as well, but she said she wasn't modeling them.

I wanted to do her YA photo and bio and she said no way, not just yet.

When I asked why she said because that now that she has a new athletic outfit, she needed to get in some gym time and see if she could trim down a bit.

I told her that her weight and size had nothing to do with it, but she insisted, so I gave in.

Secretly, I was a bit jealous that she was so determined, if she succeeds I'll be the only sibling a bit on the 'plump' side.

I knew I shouldn't be concerned by that, but it's something that's been on my mind a lot, especially with my pregnancies making it harder and harder to slim back down to my usual size.

The next afternoon Winter headed to the gym and dad said he'd keep an eye on the girls if I wanted to catch a quick nap.

I decided to take him up on the offer, but couldn't get comfortable with a constant pain in my lower back.

Which ended up being a good thing because when I went to check on the girls, dad was taking a nap in the rocker!

He must have been quite tired as not even Rielle's xylophone playing disturbed him.

This episode brought home to me just how advanced dad's age is, and I decided to spend more time with him and have him spend as much time with the girls as he can.

I really want them to have lots of great memories of their time together.

Mom was playing with Kobe nearby so the girl hadn't been unsupervised, which was a relief.

My back ache had lessened a bit but was still there, but I decided to teach Rielle a few words.

I wasn't sure about sitting on the floor but it actually helped ease it a bit.

Then the first word Rielle repeats strikes me as a little bit of providence.

"Rose! That's right sweetie, good girl. Rose's smell so sweet. You know that would be a pretty name for a baby sister, if this baby isn't a boy!"

While Rielle's busy learning new words, Nolan comes in for some daddy time with Breeze.

"Where Winter, mama?" little Rielle pipes up when I pause to think of a new word.

"She's at the gym exercising sweetie. Trying to get fit and healthy."

To both Nolan's and my surprise, Rielle says, "Esercise!"

We both grin and share a look at our precocious little daughter, saying words that are bigger than she is!

When we decide that's enough lessons, she makes a bee line for the play area.

But before she can reach it, Nolan scoops her up for some daddy hugs and cuddles.

"Aren't you the little genius! Learning big words so quickly."

But then a thought strikes him and he wonders if it isn't that Rielle's a budding genius but simply because she shares his and Winter's athletic trait that prompted her to say the word.

When he mentioned it to me later, I thought it was as good a theory as any, especially with three athletes in the house now.

But Nolan doesn't chat with Rielle long because my first contractions make me yell so loud everyone in the house comes running, even Grandpa Howard who'd come for a visit.

Rielle followed Nolan and I was just worried she'd be scared with all of us carrying on so loudly.

But she just used the potty and happily sat there singing a tune.

I quickly changed and Nolan was grabbing the keys to the truck  so we could go to the hospital, but it was too late.

Apparently my back ache most of the afternoon was really the early stages of labor and our son was ready to become part of the family!

Yes, I finally got my boy!

Welcome, Dean Swanson, who Loves the Outdoors like me and is Athletic like is father, his sister Rielle, and his aunt Winter.

As happy as I am to have a son, I'm worried even more about being the odd one out in our family.

Winter aged up to YA and is working on her newly acquired athletic skill to trim down a bit.

And Nolan and I have a son, Dean!

Breeze's birthday is later on tonight so she'll be starting school soon.

But a day later than expected as Monday is Snowflake Day!

Join us for the festivities in Chapter 36: A Birthday and Snowflake Day

Chapter 36: A Birthday and Snowflake Day
« Reply #78 on: October 09, 2019, 07:50:27 PM »

I heard the front door so I know Winter made it home in time for Breeze's birthday party.

But I'm not messing this birthday up for Breeze so I focus on helping her blow out the candles.

But when Winter starts cheering and yelling happy birthday, I can't resist a look over my shoulder.

And when I see Winter's new slim and trim shape, I'm so shocked that I almost drop Breeze!

I knew she wanted to lose a few pounds, trim down, but wow!

I never imagined a few hours at the gym could do that!

Then I realize I'm still staring at Winter and everyone's waiting on me.

And Breeze is looking at me with a trembling lip, whether it's due to the precarious position in my arms or all the party noise, I'm not sure.

So I quickly place Breeze on the floor and reassure her saying, "It's okay sweetie. Everyone's happy for you because it's your birthday. Parties are fun."

"Parties fun?" she asks still a bit nervous.

"Oh, they're lots of fun. Your grandma loves them!"

And as the sparkles start to fade and our school-age child stands before us, I realize I might have been a bit over zealous in my sell on parties.

Because Breeze picks the Party Animal trait!

Nolan's still clapping and cheering for Breeze's birthday but Winter's smiling about Breeze's new trait.

Mom, on the other hand, sobered up quick and her look has me wondering what's in store for us as the parent's of a Party Animal?

After her cake, I find Breeze sitting quietly in the kitchen chatting with her IF doll.

I didn't want to interrupt, so I waited quietly and heard her say, "Rags, you know I've loved you and played with you for a long time. But now I'm a big girl and it's time for me to move on to big girl toys. I'll be going to school and meeting other kids my age and I don't want you to feel left out. So I've got a special plan for you. But I'll never forget you. I hope my kids get a special doll just like you one day."

I don't want her to know I've overheard something so private, so I step back into the hallway and say loudly, "Breeze, we're waiting to give you your presents, have you finished your cake yet?"

Her presents are mostly new clothes but she picks out a new hairstyle too.

A cute short cut with a headband, pink, of course.

With the weather still cold, she puts on her new winter nightie and comes back out to the front nursery/sitting room and heads straight for her grandmother.

"Grandma, I know it's my birthday and I'm the one that's supposed to receive gifts but I have a present for you. A very special one that I hope you'll keep safe for me for a long time."

Mom says, "Well, don't you just know how to make a party extra special! I've never gotten a present at someone else's birthday."

But mom can't quite hide her look of surprise as she opens it and she says, "Oh, honey, I'll treasure this always and think of you, my special girl, every time I see it."

When mom's eyes meet mine, it's then that I know what Breeze has done.

She's given the doll she's loved since birth away, put her baby toys behind her, and stepped into a whole new world as a school girl.

I'm so overcome I fling myself into Grandpa Howard's arms and hug him tightly.

He laughs and says, "Well, I don't know what this is all about but I never pass up a hug from a beautiful girl!"

*then he whispers so only I can hear* "You have a very special daughter dear. Now smile so she doesn't see her mother with tears in her eyes on her birthday."

I do just as Grandpa Howard asks and plaster a big smile on my face, then duck my head and wipe my tears away on his jacket.

Grandpa holds me tight for a moment longer, then when he knows I've pulled myself back together, he
releases me and says, "Why don't we go check on my new great-grandson before I head home?"

The next morning I find Winter and tell her I really want to do her YA photo and bio, but her words catch me by surprise.

"You're shocked at my new figure aren't you, Summer? I am a bit too. I wasn't expecting such dramatic results so soon, or at all really. I'm not quite used to the change myself. It's like half of me is gone!"

I'm so embarrassed that I'm so transparent, I can't even look at her.

I finally mumble, "It's not you Winter. You look fantastic! Like Rayne and Autumn, so pretty, so…thin. I'm so embarrassed that you noticed my jealousy. It just makes me feel….the odd one out. When you became a child and you were like dad, like me, it made me feel better, having a sister that was 'pleasingly plump'."

"But I wasn't like you Summer, I was bigger, and even more so as a teen. Unhealthily big. I was having trouble breathing just carrying the extra weight. You can't imagine the relief, to take a breathe and not have it hurt. Summer, I swear I didn't do it to make you feel bad! I was just trying to be more fit, more healthy."

"Oh, I know that little sister, you don't have a mean-spirited bone in your… new little body!" I say with a shaky laugh. Adding, "I never knew your weight was making it hard to breathe. I've never felt like that, well, during my pregnancies a bit, but now I feel fine."

"And you look fine too. You look like you, Summer. The perfect blend of mom and dad. Not thin, not overly 'plump' like I was, just perfectly you. But if you did want to lose a bit of weight, I'd gladly work out with you."

"Really? You know, kid sister, I just may take you up on that offer one of these days! Now, your bio?"

"Okay, but not by myself. Let me find one of my nieces so you can take a cute photo of us together!"

Winter finds Rielle and picks her up while I take a photo.

So a bit late, but better late than never, we have:

Winter Swanson---young adult human
LTW: Five Star Chef
Career: Culinary
Traits: Friendly, Loves the Outdoors, Neat, Natural Cook, and Athletic
BF: Michael Gallo ---teen fairy

And Dean hasn't been ignored either.

He gets plenty of daddy time with Nolan, especially when it comes to dirty diapers.

Mom still hates that part the most and can't stop wrinkling her nose at the smell!

And lots of grandpa time too.

Dad spends a lot of his time with his new grandson holding him close and taking in that new baby fragrance.

And a lot of time rocking him, once he's fed and has a clean diaper.

I know mom would like to spend some time with him too, but she was there when dad fell asleep in the rocker while he was supposed to be watching the girls, so she's giving him all the time she can with his grandchildren.

Monday is Snowflake Day and Winter threw a gift giving party inviting all the family, including the Dean's.

As well as her boyfriend, Michael Gallo, who's had his YA birthday.

When the doorbell rings, Breeze greets our first guests, her great-grandpa Howard and her Aunt Harmony, who recently got engaged to Kris Rhoen.

Breeze enthuses about the snow swirling all around them and enjoys the bite of the frosty air as she gets to enjoy the outdoors for the first time as a child.

The guests all mingle and chat and Winter's boyfriend gets introduced to everyone.

He's updated up his wardrobe a bit as well as gotten a hairstyle more suitable to his career in medical.

You can see that Johnny's a bit stunned by the change as he's thinking about Michael's previous look!

And Michael's remembering how Johnny aged up looking so great, so I'm thinking there's a bit of rivalry between these two.

Maybe because Johnny's a genie and Michael's a fairy?

But for the family and Snowflake Day they put their differences aside which was a huge relief.

And most of the family and guests are all amazed by how grown up Breeze has become as she tried to greet everyone personally, showing off her new look as well.

The gift giving went really well with everyone getting a gift, which took quite a long time with so many guests.

Some gifts being sillier than others of course, with dad and Nolan both getting amphibi-clops plushies, of all things!

I'm sure those will be quickly placed in the toy box for the children to play with.

And the traditional gag gift of lumps of coal, for several unlucky guests, including Johnny Rhoen!

But they were all good sports about it and just laughed.

Brina Dean didn't even bother to choose a gift and said just being with family and friends was the best gift of all.

And she danced happily throughout the whole party.

I really need to invite my in-laws over more often so I can get to know them and  they can spend time with their grandchildren.

I got a cute bedroom lamp, just like Rayne, Autumn, and Winter, so none of us felt like we'd gotten a worse gift than the others.

Though it was surprising all four of us got something similar.

I didn't ask but I wondered if mom had something to do with that as she's never tried to play favorites with any of us kids or her grandkids.

Breeze got two gifts, a new pink toy oven that was set up in the play area, as well as a new dollhouse.

She had our old one of course, but this new one was all hers and pink, so a special gift that way.

And she cheered in her excitement letting everyone in on just how much she liked her presents.

And even though Flynn got two gifts, he was still a bit jealous of Breeze.

Turns out that even though Carter and Mysti did their best to give him attention after the twins' birth, he still ended up feeling  a bit left out and is now mean-spirited.

Even with Flynn's attitude, Mysti had a great time at the party.

But the biggest present of all this Snowflake Day was Rayne's news.

She and Johnny are expecting their first child!

Since Carter and I both have three children already, Rayne was overjoyed to be able to join us in adding to the next generation.

With the sweet motherly expression on her face, I know she's going to be a great mom.

Since they're getting up in age, our grandparents asked Winter if she'd consider moving in with them, practice as much cooking as she wants, and just give them some time with her, their youngest granddaughter.

It's not said but Winter knows they're thinking of her future, getting things set up so their property will be hers one day.

Winter asks if she can invite her boyfriend to join her and she's told that the house is definitely big enough for four, so the more the merrier.

So Winter asked Michael to join her when she moves to our grandparents' house.

He's ambitious, wants to become a surgeon one day, so having his high school sweetheart be the heir to her grandparents' property and fortune, well, that's an opportunity he's not going to pass up.

With Michael more than eager to accept her offer, she says her goodbyes.

First to mom, telling her that she's taking her grandparents up on their offer and that Michael's agreed to move in with her too.

Mom's happy that Winter accepted their offer, as it relieves her of two worries, her parents being alone at their age, and Winter being on her own at hers!

Then at bit more tearful goodbye with dad, as he hugs his youngest child, his baby close.

"You take care of yourself girl, though with all your exercise, I can see you're doing that already! And keep in touch, call and visit often, you know your mother worries."

Winter smiled at that one, "Yes dad, I know mom worries, so I'll be sure to call and visit, just to set her mind at ease."

And when I'm looking through the Snowflake Day photos I find this one with Rayne, Autumn, and Winter.

All in their formalwear and looking gorgeous!

And even though I don't look bad in the photo I found of myself, I'm still seriously thinking of taking Winter up on her offer.

It probably wouldn't hurt me to lose a few pounds.

And it might be better for the baby that Nolan and I both want!

After all, since Winter's move, there's an empty space in the house!

Breeze had her birthday and took a giant step into childhood by giving away her IF doll to mom.

Winter shocked us all, and made me a bit jealous, when she focused on working out and trimmed down to half her size!

She's offered to help me lose a few pounds, too, if I want, and I'm thinking of taking her up on her offer.

And Winter threw a fantastic Snowflake Day party and she accepted our grandparents offer to move into their home and her boyfriend Michael is joining her.

Rayne and Johnny surprised us all with the announcement of their coming child.

And with another space in the house, Nolan and I want another baby of our own!

Things are moving right along with Breeze's first day of school upon us and Nolan moving forward with his nectary.

Let's see how the next steps in our life turn out in Chapter 37: Grandkids Galore!

Chapter 37: Grandkids Galore!
« Reply #79 on: October 11, 2019, 12:51:16 PM »

With all of our guests gone, Nolan checks on Dean and takes care of all his baby needs.

While I get Rielle ready for bed and all settled in her crib.

Then with all the excitement of Snowflake day over for another year, the rest of us happily settle down for a quiet night.

The next morning begins with mom getting up early with Rielle and letting the rest of us sleep in for a bit.

She rocked with her, and tried an attack of the claw, but Rielle started giggling so loud mom stopped, before she woke the rest of us up.

It wasn't Rielle's laughter that woke me, but Dean's cries for a diaper change and a bottle.

So I stayed up and rocked him, enjoying the early morning sunshine through the bay windows while Rielle played with her blocks and mom got a shower.

Breeze was so excited about her first day of school that she was up shorty afterward, ate a quick breakfast, and then went outside and made a snowman.

Her very first one and it came out a classical masterpiece.

She finished it just before the bus arrived and off she went, eager to meet her teacher and new classmates.

Later that morning, dad went over to visit Carter and Mysti and the twins.

Mysti happily invited him inside to introduce him to his youngest granddaughters.

And boy was dad surprised when he saw how different the girls were from each other.

Mysti introduced him to Stephanie first.

She's so cute with her dark hair like Carter's and Mysti's button nose and dark eyes!

But she wasn't quite ready to go to dad yet.

Samantha was a different story, holding up her little arms and saying, "Up, up, gampa. Up."

Dad couldn't resist that invitation and picked her up and tickled her.

Samantha loved that and dad fell in love with her laugh as well as the red hair she got from mom.

Mom had sent over a winter outfit in her favorite green for Samantha.

When dad showed us the photo we weren't sure if she looked like either of her parents, but she certainly was cute.

Dad started teaching her words right way, clapping and encouraging her, but she stayed pretty quiet.

Then she finally said her first word, 'cook book'!

And dad stopped while he was ahead, figuring that was enough for her first try.

Then he tracked down Stephanie to try on her new outfit.

One with a pop of red that went beautifully with her dark hair.

He had Mysti help him with the matching ribbons that went with her vest.

By that time she was more comfortable with dad, and he decided to have her try a few steps.

And she only wobbled a little bit as she toddled toward him.

Dad even cooked them some of his special mac and cheese while they got the twins settled down for naps.

The special part being that he did it without burning it!

Then dad joined them to chat and spend time with Flynn, Carter, and Mysti.

It was a busy day for dad, but one I know he really enjoyed, being with Carter and getting to know Mysti and his grandkids.

I'm really happy dad had this day with them to make special memories.

While dad was out, Winter stopped by to pick up more of her stuff.

Not that she needed much besides her clothes.

She went on and on about how great our grandparents' house is.

"You wouldn't believe it Summer! They have all these antiques and works of art, I think some of them are originals! But even as great as they are, I still think Autumn could hold her own. She has an amazing talent."

As she says this, we both look over at the last painting Autumn did at our house.

Mom and dad loved it so much they asked if her if they could keep it.

Autumn laughed and said of course we could and we all teased her about how it'd be worth millions when she became a rich and famous artist.

Even if that never happens, I think her painting is just beautiful.

And as I look through the windows, I realize that most of yesterday's snow is gone!

Wow, looks like spring may be here sooner than we expected.

I head in to the sitting room/nursery to check on Dean and Rielle and I see that Nolan and Mom have everything under control.

Nolan's playing with Dean as Rielle toddles towards us, all dressed for the day.

Later I watched Nolan crush his first batch of fruit.

Since he's never made nectar before, he used mostly regular grapes and a couple of his Renoit grapes.

The way he explained it to me is that there's no sense using his really good specialty grapes or expensive fruits until he's at a higher skill as it would just be a waste.

I did ask him how it felt stomping the grapes with his bare feet and he made a face and said, 'squishy'!

I couldn't resist a photo!

While the nectar was processing he took a shower and then he offered me a glass from his first batch.

We both agreed it wasn't bad at all, and it gave us both quite the sugar rush.

He told me that we'll just drink most of his first nectar attempts and save the nectar racks for the good stuff so it can age and bring in some serious simoleans down through the generations.

With that thought in mind, he's upgrading our second machine for improved pressing.

My mind was already overloaded with types of grapes, other fruits, the stomping and fermentation process, so I just nodded and tried to look like I knew what he was talking about.

But he saw right through me, this husband of mine, and said, "I'll be busy here for awhile, go check on the kids or play with the one of the cats. I've got this!"

I flashed him a grateful smile and said, "I'm glad someone does! I think I'll stick to gardening and baby making!"

As I fled up the stairs, I heard Nolan say with a flirty laugh, "You, me, later babe. I'll bring another bottle of nectar!"

With the weather warming up, I decide to get out of the house for a bit and visit my sisters.

But Winter wasn't home, or my grandparents.

I was a bit disappointed as I really wanted to see how she was settling in and check out the house.

We'd all been so busy on the original farm, trying to make ends meet, that we'd not visited our grandparents at their house as they usually came to out to the farm.

And then with the new farm lot, and getting that one set up and all, plus getting married and having three kids of my own, well, I just hadn’t found the time.

But I want our families to stay close, so I've promised myself that I'll make more of an effort.

To that end, I gave Autumn a call and she said she didn't have to work until later that afternoon and she'd love some company, so I headed over to her house in town.

Mom and Rayne had been here when Autumn first moved in, but I never had and it was a nice place, with an overhanging entryway flanked by a stacked stone column.

Autumn greeted me at the door and invited me inside.

She offered to give me the grand tour but suddenly I felt a bit lightheaded.

And the next thing I knew I was standing there in a maternity dress still in a bit of shock.

The only thought in my mind as I pated my rounded tummy was that Nolan's nectar is quite the amazing stuff!

Autumn isn't sure what's going on and she asks me if I'm okay.

I smile and rush over and tell her the good news.

"I'm pregnant again Autumn! Oh, I can't wait to tell Nolan, mom and dad, and Breeze! Rielle and little Dean are too young to understand just yet, but they've both got birthdays soon. Oh, I'm just so excited!'

Autumn congratulates me and then gives me a thumbs up as she says, "I don't know for sure yet Summer, but I think I am too!"

We both squeal in our excitement and hug each other as we dance around her kitchen.

But I promise not to spoil her news until she's ready to share it with the rest of the family.

Which wasn't long at all, as later that day she called mom and dad and confirmed that she was indeed expecting their ninth grandchild!

Well, mom and dad have been spending lots of time with their grandchildren but they've got three more on the way.

Rayne and Johnny's first child should be arriving any day now.

And thanks to Nolan's first batch of nectar, we're expecting our fourth child.

While Autumn and Jamey are expecting their first child too!

Plus we have two birthday's coming up, little Dean's and Rielle's, after which she'll join Breeze in grade school.

The Swansons are certainly doing their bit to increase the town's population!

We've got 4 girls and 2 boys so far in generation 2, so will the boys catch up or will the girls stay in the lead?

Only time will tell, and I'll be sure and write it all down and take lots of photos for my journal.

Keep following along as we head into Chapter 38: A Scare and a Nooboo

Chapter 38: A Scare and a Nooboo
« Reply #80 on: October 14, 2019, 03:24:48 PM »

The next morning, the bus stops for Breeze, right on time.

A new routine for us, but we're going to have to get used to it.

As well as seeing the grass again as all that's left of the snow is the igloo someone made right in front of our porch steps!

No one's admitted to it yet, but I know when dad tracks the culprit down, it won't be pretty.

All that snow melting in one spot is going to cause our walkway to turn into a muddy mess!

Dad's taking advantage of the warmer weather and hanging some laundry on the line.

Mom loves the convenience of the dryer, but dad's still pretty frugal, even though we don't need to be that way as much now.

Me? I like the convenience of the dryer too, especially in the cold months, but nothing beats the smell of sheets fresh off the line!

A smell they keep and remind you of when you make up the bed.

I just breathe in deep and drift off to dreamland surrounded by it!

Though I could do without crunchy towels and jeans, so there's something to be said for both methods.

Then I talk to mom about something I've been thinking about for awhile.

"Mom, Kobe's getting older, too old to have another kitten, and we don't have space in the house anyway. But we do have Flynn, and I'd like to keep the line going. Do you think we could check in town for a female cat that could have his kittens?"

"Oh, what a wonderful idea, Summer! We could check with some of our friends and neighbors that have cats and see if anyone would be interested."

"And I could put up a notice on the bulletin board at the Cat Park. I'll print one up on the computer and go over there later today."

But that afternoon we get the scare of our lives.

The afternoon bus comes and flies right on by without letting Breeze off!

Before we all panicked and call the police, we got a call from the school.

Breeze had stayed after school to help out and clean the hamster cages.

Apparently, there was a mix up and we weren't called before school let out to give permission for her to do so, but the note was found and they called us as soon as they realized the error.

Boy was I glad mom answered the phone as she gave them a piece of her mind for scaring us witless, even if it was only for a few minutes.

By the time mom was done with the grade school principal I was starting to feel sorry for the man.

But when it got dark, and it was time for Dean's birthday and still no Breeze, we were all starting to worry again.

Then Nolan went outside and saw her on her new bike just as she reached the driveway.

He called in that she was home and safe and I brought Dean to his cake.

I could hear mom calling from the back porch to wait for her, as she was just grabbing the clothes from the line.

And then Flynn wandered in probably hoping to get some cake or at least a lick of frosting.

I set Dean on the floor just as mom came in and we both looked at each other in anticipation.

Wondering who this little one would look like, me, Nolan, one of his grandparents?

Maybe a combination of all of us? Or maybe just his own unique self?

Either way, we know one thing for sure.

He will be showered in love and attention, like all the Swanson kids and grandkids before him!

But suddenly I feel lightheaded again and Nolan and mom both tell me to go lie down for a moment.

I hate to miss Dean's birthday, but my doctor warned me that any dizziness at all could lead to a fall that could cause harm to me or the baby, so I do as I'm told.

But as I leave the room, I remind them to take lots of photos for me.

But even from my room I know when the sparkles appear because mom, Nolan, dad, and Breeze all make enough noise to wake the dead!

Hearing just how loud we are at birthday parties makes me wonder how any of us ever survived the trauma of it when we were infants.

And when mom screams even louder, I figure she must have won the pool and that Dean must have gotten her red hair.

Which was a good guess, because I was right!

When I decide I'm feeling better, I head back to the kitchen and sit at the table.

Mom's still cheering in her excitement over Dean's red hair, while Breeze doesn’t wait and grabs a piece of cake.

Dad's looking very serious though as he asks, "Why were you so late getting home Breeze, we were all very worried. The school called and said you stayed to help clean the cages, but we never expected it to be after dark before you'd get home."

As she heads for a chair at the kitchen table, Breeze answers, "I'm sorry Grandpa, I didn't mean to worry any of you. I did help with the cages and then as I was heading home, I started feeling really bad, all stuffed up and it was getting hard to breathe."

Nolan, full of fatherly concern, says, "Are you all right honey? Maybe we should take you in to the clinic for a check up?"

Breeze shakes her head and says, "No need dad. That's why I was late. I biked over to the clinic first and they checked the records and mom had allergies when she was a kid, so they checked me out and I have them to. They said they needed to get permission to give me a shot, but they came back and gave it to me so I figured they called and got permission. Didn't they call?"

Dad's eyes open wider as he says, "Oh, that must be what that call was about earlier. I thought it was a crank call, someone said something about allergies and maybe a shot, but I couldn't really understand what they were saying. I think I said, 'yes' at some point. But I didn't realize that it was about Breeze!"

Mom's cheering had died away at this point, and she didn't say a word,  just gave dad a look.

Dad looked at Mom and then at Breeze and said, "It was my fault honey, but it won't happen again. I'll be checking with the clinic on those hearing aids my doctor said I needed weeks ago."

Mom nods and picks up Dean before he can escape the kitchen and says, "Let's get some photos of you in your new clothes young man."

Mom had picked out quite a few outfits for her youngest grandchild.

No more thrift store finds for the Swanson's that's for sure!

Dean's favorite color is seafoam and mom found this adorable spring overall set with matching sneakers.

For dress up occasions, a sweet toddler suit with gray vest and seafoam tie.

For the warmer nights we've got coming up, a cute shortie pj outfit in gray and blue with matching booties.

And for outside, the sweetest seafoam pullover with trees and dinosaurs all edged in dark blue.

Mom left him in his overalls and he headed straight for the toy box, which was here he'd been going before she grabbed him!

Seems like our son has a one track mind.

Then as we're getting Rielle's cake ready, we get a call from Rayne and Johnny, along with two photos.

They have a new daughter, so the girls' team gained another member!

Her name is Nicola and she's an Athletic, Virtuoso.

I frown at the news of yet another athlete in the family and wonder if the universe is trying to tell me something or if it's just taunting me.

But the first photo of Rayne and her new daughter remind me that this isn't about me, but about my sister and my sweet little niece.

The second photo is of Rayne placing her in her crib in the newly completed nursery.

The first to grace this cute little space.

She's too young to manifest any genie powers, but Johnny says he can 'feel' her, so she's got some genie genetics, but only time will tell just how much.

Mom and dad told her they'd come over right after Rielle's birthday.

Then they paused for a special moment together as the love they've shared, the love that's grown, the love that's produced 5 children of their own, has now grown to include another grandchild, number seven!

With time being of the essence, I brought Rielle to her cake.

She seemed even more nervous than Breeze had been, so everyone toned down the birthday cheers and stepped back to give her some space.

After I helped her blow out the candles, I set her gently on the floor, and made no mention of how fun parties are, no need to influence her on her next trait!

I was trying to step out of her way, slowly, so I'm not subjected to another bout of dizziness.

Too slowly as, before I could even turn around, she started to sparkle and aged up to a child!

A child that's now friendly and aged up into an outfit we all liked for a change.

Mom quickly helped her with a new hairstyle and she modeled some of her new clothes.

Rielle decided she still liked her pigtails, but she chose a little longer style.

And for her formal, a deep purple dress that really brought out the highlights in her hair.

With warmer coming up, mom even bought her a cute 2-piece swimsuit as she knows the kids will be running through the sprinklers the first chance they get!

Since she's athletic, they pick a short outfit that will keep her cool and facilitate jumping jacks and the like.

Then mom and dad give her hugs and kisses, wish her a happy birthday, and head over to see their newest granddaughter.

Rayne greets them on the new covered front porch with Nicola in her arms, eager to have her daughter meet her maternal grandparents.

Mom and dad can only stare with lumps in their throats when they set eyes on her as Rayne says, "Looks like we're still partial to girls in the Swanson family as we've already got 5 of them for this generation!"

Then she invited mom and dad in to spend some time with their youngest grandchild, and take a tour of the newly renovated farmhouse.

Dean aged up to be an adorable toddler (like I'd think he was anything else), sporting mom's and my red hair, so there'll be plenty of toddler photos coming up.

Rielle aged up to child and will be joining Breeze on the school bus tomorrow.

And the gen 2 girls stay in the lead with the count now 5 to 2, with little Nicola joining the family.

But with the renovations on the old farmhouse complete we'll get to see photos of it in my next journal entry.

Next up in my story, Chapter 39: Rayne's Reno and Pyros

Chapter 39: Rayne's Reno and Pyros
« Reply #81 on: October 18, 2019, 08:35:55 PM »

Rayne had popped Nicola into her crib while she showed the photos of the house reno.

Mysti and the contractor had done a marvelous job on it.

They were able to enlarge the house and give it a bit more charm with a new covered side entry, a small bay window in the dining area and side and back covered deck.

The floor plan had changed a bit too with the front entry leading into an actual living room.

And archway off the living room led to a bright new U-shaped kitchen with a dining area and light-filled bay window, with sliders to a side and back deck.

Mom and dad's original master was still pretty much in tact, but it had it's own master bath now.

And there's a dedicated laundry room for easy access to all the bedrooms.

With a brand new hallway boasting a second full bath along with three bedrooms, one being a nursery.

Mom loved all the photos and how great the old farm house looked, but once Rayne mentioned the nursery, she totally focused on her new granddaughter.

Dad wasn't satisfied with just talking about her though, he wanted to hold her.

So he headed back to the nursery where he found Johnny had already beaten him to it!

"Isn't she just beautiful Dad Swanson? I just want to hold her and look at her sweet face every single moment. Being a dad is so much more than I ever thought---it's so big, my heart feels like it's going to burst out of my chest!"

As much as dad wanted to hold his new granddaughter, he told me seeing his son-in-law all caught up in the love of new fatherhood was something he'd never forget.

He told me it made him think back to my birth, his first child, a daughter, and that he knew exactly how Johnny was feeling.

But moments later, they were joined by Rayne and mom, also eager to spend time with the newest Swanson, well, Swanson/Rhoen.

But any baby time was going to have to wait as little Nicola fell fast asleep while the adults were deciding who got to hold her next!

When mom shared all the new farm house photos with us, I asked if Rayne and Johnny were planning on filling up all those extra bedrooms.

Mom laughed and said, "Funny you should ask. If this photo I snapped of the happy parents is anything to go by, I'd say, yes!"

Since mom couldn't get her grandchild fix at Rayne's, she made sure to get in some hugs and cuddles with Dean first thing the next morning.

And tickles that made Dean laugh and giggle.

After a bottle, clean diaper and a fresh outfit, she decided to teach him a few words.

I was really glad Dean was distracted when she brought up matches, as playing with fire seems to be something inherent to the Dean family.

Nolan's father, George, has always had a odd predilection for flames ever since his mother perished in a fire when he was a child.

After Nolan told me about it, I thought he'd never want anything to do with it, but strangely it's had just the opposite affect, and Nolan and all his siblings always seem to be around when stuff mysteriously bursts into flames!

I haven't seen anything like that with our children, but no need to put ideas into their heads!

Since Dean wasn't all that interested, mom quickly gave up and just had fun tossing him in the air.

Then we heard the bus and Rielle headed off to her first day of school!

She was walking a bit slowly towards the bus, so I figured she was nervous, but most kids are the first day.

Her big sister wasn't far behind and quickly joined her in the front seat.

But both girls were actually a bit apprehensive today as not only was it Rielle's first day, but Breeze's last day of grade school and she wanted to do extra well to get her 'A.'

While the girls were at school and mom had Dean, Nolan spent some time in the basement nectary.

Some of the specialty grapes and fruits needed watering and others were ready for harvesting.

And he finished up his improved pressing upgrade on one of the nectar makers.

He's really looking forward to that extra bottle it makes, especially once they're worth something!

Dad and I focused on the main garden, soaking in some of that springtime sunshine.

Being outside the plants didn't need as much watering, but with the warmer weather weeds were springing up and a few plants actually had produce ready for harvesting.

Dad, perfectionist that he is, focused on the weeding, while I picked a few tomatoes and life fruits and started fertilizing some of the other plants to give them a healthy start this panting season.

While we were busy in the gardens, mom had gotten Dean up from his nap, and given him a bottle.

Tried her hand at potty training him as she'd rather do that than change diapers!

And let him have some play time banging on his toy drum.

Since mom had done all that and he'd had play time, while I showered, I encouraged him to take a few more steps.

He was doing very well and was pretty confident as he toddled towards me.

With walking mastered, I gave him a big squeeze and told him what a big boy he was.

And that mommy was hoping to give him a little brother soon!

Nolan has wishes for a boy or a girl, being happy with either one, but I want another little boy to even up the family.

I guess I'm a lot like Carter with that wish!

I hear the front door and realize the girls must be home from school.

But when I peek into the kitchen it's only Breeze in there doing her homework.

And before I can even ask she says, "Don't worry mom, dad gave Rielle permission to go over to the Crumplebottom's after school. She's working on a school project with Jeannette."

"On her first day? And isn't Jeannette in your grade?"

"It's a special project where 5th graders help younger kids with their homework on the first day of school. I was hoping I'd get a partner to improve my grade and get that 'A', but my birthday's this weekend so I can't participate."

"Oh, I'm sorry Breeze, but with Snowflake Day being Monday, and tomorrow being Love Day, well, that made for a very short grade school week for you. But High School will be longer so don't give up on that 'A'."

"I won't mom, but if I finish this paper, I'll have a solid 'B', so that's not bad for 3 days of school!"

And Rielle was at the Crumplebottom's working diligently on her homework.

"Thanks for offering to be my partner Jeannette. I was nervous about my first homework, but with your help it's been really easy."

"You caught on to the math lesson quickly so that was a big help. When you finish that last problem, I'll go over your spelling words with you."

Listening to the girls, Jeannette's older brother, Henry, says, "Wow, I wish they'd had the 'homework help' program when I was in grade school. The only subject I did well in back then was art! And this civics lesson, wow, it's confusing."

Gerald, listening to his kids and their school friend, adds, "Well, I'm proud of all of you! It's nice to see you kids working together for better grades. Henry, why don't you ask one of your high school friends over to study with? Maybe that'd make it easier and a bit more fun."

"Now that's a great idea dad. Would you mind if I called Sammi Dean?"

Gerald looks up from his book and says, "If you can actually focus on homework with a pretty girl in the house! But don't leave any matches around!"

Henry blushes and says, "Dad! In front of the little kids? Really?"

But Rielle caught the last part of Gerald's comment as she asks, "Why would my Aunt Sammi care about matches Mr. Crumplebottom?"

And suddenly Gerald decided it'd be a great time for the girls to take a break and have a snack and he heads to the kitchen to track one down without responding.

He called me later and explained the whole incident and apologized for bringing it up with Rielle there, but the whole town's aware of the issue and with what Nolan's told me, I can't very well blame the man.

Mom got out of the house for a bit.

First bringing a few harvestables in for consignment as I'm still working on mastering the gardening career, like mom, dad, and Nolan have.

I'm at level 9 in the career, so our next big harvest should do it.

But I'm still behind in gardening skill, only being at level 6, since I'm carrying baby #4, I have to take it easy in the garden.

Mom's gotten used to the specialists sharp teeth in his vampire form, but she tries to avoid stopping by when there's a full moon, as his werewolf form isn't something she's used to yet.

Then she stops in at Rayne and Johnny's on her way home.

But little Nicola is sleeping again so she cleans up a bit in the kitchen and makes the new parents a nice spaghetti dinner.

As her granddaughter starts stirring in her crib, Johnny says, "Thanks so much for cooking and cleaning mom, we really appreciate it. With Nicola here, we 've been spending all our time with her when she's awake, and then napping when she does! I didn't realize one little baby could turn your whole life upside down."

"It's a full time job that's for sure, and I love helping out. If you two want some alone time, I'd be happy to take this shift. More than happy!"

Rayne and Johnny take her up on her offer and she gets in some grandma play time.

As well as cuddles.

Even with five children and six previous grandchildren, mom says there's always room in your heart for another one.

And when I see her face is this photo, I know it's true.

The party girl may still be hidden in there somewhere, but this look is all about love, the tender joyful love that fills your heart when you hold a baby and think of their life, just beginning.

The weather's warming up and Spring has arrived!

We're getting the outside garden all cleaned up and fertilized and hoping for big harvests this season.

While Nolan's continuing to learn nectar making and using his handiness skills to improve our machines.

Dean's learning his toddler skills and being loved, cuddled, and tickled by all of us.

Mom's finally got to hold little Nicola, but we've got two more family members arriving soon.

And some birthday's are coming up, but sadness intrudes unexpectedly in our lives.

Hopefully my tears won't spatter the pages too much in Chapter 40: A Loss and A Gain

Chapter 40: A Loss and A Gain
« Reply #82 on: October 21, 2019, 01:03:00 PM »

But all our news is not happy as first mom gets a call from Olivia Rios telling her that her mother,  Agnes Crumplebottom passed on and then Mimi Murielle calls and tells us Grandpa Swanson passed away quietly in his sleep last night too.

Mom helps out as much as she can knowing her mother is dealing with the devastating pain of her spouse's passing.

She makes arrangements at Pleasant Rest Graveyard which wasn't an issue at all since Grandpa Howard had already purchased a large plot, as well as headstone's for himself and Mimi Murielle.

The headstone's just needed to be engraved with their particulars and an epitaph.

The space was also large enough for Swanson's down through the generations.

I thought that was rather macabre but mom said it was just her father's frugalness as buying the large plot and stones for both of them was the best deal, and would lessen the burden on the family when others passed on and joined them there.

It still struck me as a bit premature, especially for me and my siblings, but mom said it brought Grandpa peace of mind knowing the Swanson's would have a place for their eternal rest together.

When mom said it that way, it did actually make me feel a little better knowing we'd all be together, now, and long after we left our corporeal selves behind.

We all cried and mourned in our own fashion, of course, but we're comforted by the thought that the circle of life continues, with those in their elder years passing on and new Swanson's growing up with more on the way.

In fact, Rayne was still recuperating from Nicola's birth, so was unable to attend the simple graveside service we had as a family.

But all the rest of us were there.

Mom consoling Mimi Murielle throughout the service.

Mom offering to take care of the epitaph and memorial in the paper.

While dad spoke quietly with Autumn, making sure she was holding up okay.

Winter and Carter taking in Mimi Murielle's grief and Mom's stoic ability to reign in her own.

And I break down for the first time, knowing I can't give in to my grief wholeheartedly as I don't want to pass on too many negative vibes to the baby.

Then Winter tells mom that's a great idea, maybe have everyone in the family share a special moment, a memory, they had with Grandpa Howard.

Mimi wipes her tears, listening closely and saying that would be wonderful, something to show just how he touched all of our lives.

Then Dad gives Autumn a consoling hug, assuring her that we'll all get through this.

Then mom tells Mimi that it's okay to cry, to show her grief at the loss of a love she's had for so many years.

Hearing mom's words, Winter breaks down and sheds a few tears of her own.

After Carter takes Autumn, Winter and Mimi home, mom quietly steps to the headstones and sheds her own tears.

Dad and I break down as well, saying our final goodbyes to a very special man.

A man that made the family we are today possible.

Then dad turns to mom, and holds her close, letting their own love help them handle this loss.

The loss that's too fresh to put aside just yet.

Though the main family is dealing with sadness at the loss of Grandpa Howard, Nolan holds down the fort at home, keeping the children occupied.

The girls are a little sad, but Dean, who really likes tickle time, is too young to understand our grief.

Then, when I get home, supporting and consoling me, along with chatting with our expected nooboo.

I asked Nolan if he thought it was going to be a boy or a girl but he just smiled and spoke to the baby.

"Either way, we'll play with blocks and the xylophone, all those fun things, won't we little one? And you have sisters, and a brother all just waiting for you to join them!"

The next morning I rock with Dean and, as he cuddles close, I think of family.

The loss of Grandpa Howard but the babies soon to be born, mine and Nolan's fourth child, and Autumn and Jamey's first one.

Mom was right, it's the circle of life; birth, life, death, and life again in a new generation.

And with that thought, I start teaching Dean a few more words.

He does really well, repeating the ones he likes the best, which focus on being outside, of course.

Clouds.

Thunderstorms and rain.

"Boom, boom, boom," he repeats, not afraid of thunder at all.

Then I add in a sing song voice, "Those rain drops keep falling on my head! They keep falling."

Mom's constant preoccupation with dancing has us all listening to the radio non-stop and the song has been stuck in my head for days!

And when Dean repeats the same tune, "Rain drops keep falling!", I can't help but laugh and dad smiles as he walks by us in the hallway.

"Your mother's going to make dancers and singers of all of us yet, I've been perfecting my singing in the shower!"

I laugh again as dad's singing from the shower has become a topic for family discussion as all his practice has made his singing voice just wonderful to hear.

And when dad joins us, it doesn't distract Dean from learning more words.

We've moved on from the weather to what the rain does, helping our plants and trees grow, with the buds turning into bright green leaves with the warmer weather and springtime rains.

But it's a good thing Dean's progressed so well with his toddler skills, because soon he's going to have a younger sibling.

Nolan thinks about it even when he's busy in the basement, wondering if the new baby will be a boy or a girl.

Since Rielle's lessons brought up the name Rose, we've decided to use that for a girl.

And to honor Grandpa Howard, use Ward for a boy, a diminutive of his name just like Rielle is a shortened form of Mimi's, Murielle.

Mom and Mimi both had tears in their eyes when we told them and Mimi just hugged me tight, not being able to say anything at all.

And Winter's kept up her promise to help me stay fit and healthy for this baby.

She tells me she can't train me full out on a weight bench or a treadmill due to my pregnancy but she can teach me a few stretches to limber me up and help me feel better about myself.

Mom looks a little concerned about this decision to workout, as for her 'working out' means dancing to her favorite songs, but she just shakes her head and heads off to take a relaxing bath.

So I start off with the warm up stretches, while Winter heads for a rocker.

I told her that was totally unfair, but she just laughed and told me to breathe properly, in through my nose, out through my mouth, and focus, so as not to strain myself.

A bit later, I can hear Winter chatting with mom.

Then mom repeats Winter's admonition to be very careful and not pull a muscle by stretching too far and maybe take a relaxing bath afterward as it helps her a lot.

I'm not so sure as she still seems to be worried about me exercising.

And, to my amazement, the breathing really helps, and the stretches actually work out the minor aches in my shoulders and back.

And then in the middle of my workout, my labor begins with full on contractions, no uncomfortable back pains all afternoon with this baby!

But full on contractions that Nolan heard from the nectary and he came running, to panic when he saw me in labor, naturally.

Along with Breeze, who's scream of complete terror almost unnerved me.

When Nolan heard it, he got her to calm down and sit by the chess table and take a deep breathe, which I was very thankful for as her screams were so piercing I'm sure all the neighbors heard them.

But that didn't stop Rielle from coming to see what all the fuss was about and panicking as well.

She didn't scream like Breeze but her whimpers had me reassuring her that everything was okay, that labor was a natural process, a bit painful, some times more than others, but still natural.

She jumped up and down a bit more, then she joined Breeze at the chess table, where they both nervously waited for their new sibling to join the family.

And their wait was rewarded with the birth of a new baby brother.

Welcome Ward Swanson, our Brave and Good, youngest son!

And not a quiet one either as his screams have me quickly getting him a bottle.

While his big sisters, relieved that he's safely arrived, have started a game of chess and are enduring the sounds of a very unhappy nooboo!

A sound I assure them is very normal and one they both made when they were infants.

But with a full tummy and some mommy snuggles, little Ward is soon content and the girls continue their game.

And me, I'm all smiles, thankful that everything went smoothly, even if it caught me a bit by surprise.

But more than anything else, thrilled that not only did I get the boy I was hoping for, but that he's named after my Grandpa Howard.

And that circle of life that I was thinking about earlier?

It's now complete.

Grandpa Howard was born, lived a full life, and passed on, but he'll live on in all of us, especially in our new little son that carries a version of his name.

Dad rocks little Ward and actually looks more comfortable in the rocking chair since Breeze smiled at him, oh so long ago.

While Nolan sits with Dean helping him with his blocks, saying, "The circle goes in this one little buddy."

With all of our Swanson men in one place, three generations; dad, Nolan, Dean, and Ward, I can't resist a photo for my journal.

Mom does the honors though, once she's got me settled comfortably in bed for some rest.

Then she calls the family to tell them the good news.

Autumn and Jamey rush over and mom greets them on the porch.

"You can see little Ward in a minute, let me get a look at you first! You're feeling well? No more morning sickness?"

Autumn tells her she feels fine and how excited they both are about little Ward and their first child.

"Girl or boy, this baby will be close to Ward's age and I want us to visit a lot so the cousins stay close."

Mom smiles and says, "I'm so glad you feel that way! Summer was saying the same thing, especially after her trip to town and your visit together."

"Now let me get to know the next Swanson/Rios grandbaby!", and she chats happily away to
her coming grandchild.

Inside, dad's getting to know Jamey a little better and they chat about one thing after another.

First Jamey thanks dad for all the help with their house, the 2nd story reno and everything they've done to make things easier for them.

Dad smiles and tells him that they were happy to help, to have the funds to do that for their children and grandchildren.

Which of course leads them on to the topic of little Ward and Autumn and Jamey's expected child.

Dad asks if they want a boy or a girl and Jamey assures dad that gender isn't a priority, just a happy healthy baby and mother.

"Being at the hospital, Mr. Swanson, I've seen and heard a lot, and as long as Autumn and the baby come through safely, that's all that matters to me. Boy or girl, I'll be a dad either way!"

Jamey's words bring a smile to dad's face as he tells me about it later and I know he's happy that  all of us kids have found loving, caring partners to share our lives.

We've had tragedy strike us for the first time with the loss of Grandpa Howard.

But, in our grief, we are sustained by our love for him and each other.

And especially for the love that comes with the circle of life continuing it's never ending cycle.

One that's continued with the birth of our fourth child, a second son, Ward.

And will keep moving forward as the birth of Autumn and Jamey's child is right around the corner.

Along with a couple of birthdays that are imminent, mine and Nolan's.

Chapter 41: Birthdays, Old and New
« Reply #83 on: October 24, 2019, 12:02:09 PM »

Rielle had returned Jeannette's favor of helping her with homework by inviting her over to visit after school on Friday.

And Rielle can't resist the opportunity to tell her very first ghost story.

Jeannette listens eagerly and gasps in all the right places.

She's a truly nice little girl.

Inside, Autumn and Winter can't resist dancing when mom puts on some party music.

Breeze had been looking for Kobe but as soon as her aunts started dancing she couldn't help but join in as no party animal can resist a good beat!

And then, just as Autumn was getting tired and had come in to the nursery/sitting room to say goodbye, Nolan spins and sparkles in the prelude to becoming an adult!

With Grandpa's passing and Ward's birth, we'd forgotten all about it.

Yet another birthday where I fell asleep and almost missed it !

The rest of the family did what they could and blew noise makers and shouted out birthday congratulations.

Which luckily woke me up so I could join in on the celebration.

I made it into the room just as the sparkles disappeared and Nolan's mile high YA hair appeared again!

By the look on his face, he'll probably want me to burn this photo, but not a chance.

But we let him change it back quickly enough as none of could stop laughing at it.

And boy was he happy to get his shorter hair back, he clapped really loudly and didn't even bother having a mid-life crisis!

I hope I can enter my adult years so smoothly, and I'll find out soon enough as my birthday's tomorrow.

It should have been before Nolan's, but apparently being pregnant has added a few days to my YA years, which I'm happily not giving back!

It was getting late though, so Rielle said goodbye to Jeannette, who was also getting sleepy.

Rielle would have loved to have a sleepover, but she doesn't know Jeannette that well yet.

Jamey was getting sleepy too, so he brushed Autumn's arm in a gentle caress and told her it was time for him to get both his babies home to bed.

Seeing Jamey being so sweet and considerate with Autumn, and the look of love they shared, I know this is another love match, and my heart fills with joy for the both of them.

But it's been a long and exciting day for all of us with Ward's birth, so mom gets Dean ready for bed and gives him a kiss goodnight.

With my extended nap the evening before, I'm up early and I take care of Ward's baby needs and then rock him for a bit.

My thoughts dwell on the past few days and just how busy we've been, and yet even busier days are ahead.

The girls are in school, Dean's got to finish his toddler skills, and Breeze's birthday will be here soon.

My eyes open wide at the thought of having a teenage daughter!

And not just a teenager, but a child, a toddler, and a nooboo!

The days really will be busy. No doubt about that.

But Breeze is already busy as she's spending Saturday, her last day of childhood, completing a science project for school.

She needs to collect some gems and metals and deliver them to the science center.

So she heads out on her bike early that morning while I'm rocking Ward.

She finds several of the gems and metals she needs in a open field and claps excitedly at her good luck.

Then she bikes farther into town to track down a few more.

And as her directions draw her closer, she realizes that her last few items can all be found around one place.

In the Pleasant Rest Graveyard!

She quickly runs through and finds the necessary items.

And runs even faster back to her bike and the safety of home!

Back at the house, mom's busy chatting with Autumn and the expected nooboo.

And finally getting her moment of fame as a paparazzi notes that the Swansons will be adding yet another member to their family.

I finally got to chat with her and the little one when she came inside.

Autumn laughed and said her stomach gets more attention than she does.

I told her that's how it is when you're expecting, and I should know having had four babies!

Then we started chatting about diapers, bottles, best sleeping positions, and all those baby things that big sisters share with their little sisters who are having their first child.

It feels so nice having a sister around again that I hug her close and tell her it's not been the same since they all moved out.

She hugs me back and says she feels the same way, being grown up, married, having kids of your own, just not the same as living together as sisters.

Then we laugh and start remembering how we all shared one bedroom and were constantly borrowing each others stuff, a lot of times without permission, and causing all sorts of sisterly drama.

But soon my own children are calling and it's time to go from being a sister back to my duties as a mom, so I tell her to relax in a rocker while I check on them and grab a shower.

But I'm only out of the shower a few minutes when I hear her calling me.

In a rather shaky voice, so I hurry back to see what's the matter.

And I see her standing awkwardly by the rocker, clutching her stomach, with a very suspicious and familiar puddle at her feet!

I panic for a few minutes, I mean who wouldn't panic?

Sharing sisterly mom stories is one thing, delivering your baby sisters child, no way!

I yell to mom and dad, and Nolan to watch the kids and for someone to call Jamey.

Then I tell Autumn we need to get her to the hospital and we walk as quickly as she can go to the truck, in between her contractions.

I hoist her inside, don't even ask me how!

And we head off to Sacred Spleen faster than I have ever driven before in my life.

Luckily dad was able to reach Jamey, and he quickly told him that Autumn was in labor and she'd meet him at the hospital.

We got there in plenty of time and I followed Autumn inside, assuring her I'd stay with her through the whole event.

Jamey showed up a bit later, and when he found us in the birthing room, he told us all about a girl in a graduation outfit freaking out by the hospital doors.

She kept screaming about a woman being in labor, having a baby.

Jamey smiled as he told us she was still screaming when he sprinted past her and said, "Good, then I'm in the right place! I think that was my wife."

And when Autumn and I came back outside, while Jamey filled out some required paperwork, the poor girl was still there but at least she wasn't screaming anymore.

Autumn just walked proudly by carrying her son, Mitchel.

She had such a serene smile on her face that I don't think I've ever seen her look more beautiful.

I got both mother and baby settled in the truck and we headed for Autumn's home.

Jamey wasn't far behind, though I think he was still in a shock at how quickly it all happened.

And little Mitchel made it home safe and sound, happy in his mother's arms.

My little sister Autumn, a mother for the first time!

And I stood with his proud parents watching from across the room as he settled into his own crib in his new nursery.

Autumn and Jamey were hugging and whispering words of love to each other, while I offered my congratulations on their new son, my sweet little nephew.

Then they were both hugging me and thanking me for being there, for getting Autumn to the hospital on time.

It was pretty much a lovefest as we all hugged and cried and laughed now that it was all over and everything had turned out fine.

Mother and baby, both happy and healthy and home.

So now the grandchildren count is nine and the boys are catching up fast adding Ward and Mitchel to the count, for four boys and five girls.

Nolan's had his adult birthday and the only change for him was his mile high YA hair that was quickly changed back to his preferred short cut.

But I haven't had my birthday yet and I wonder what changes it will bring as we head into our adult years and Breeze enters her teens.

Things are moving pretty fast and I'm not sure I'm ready.

Ready or not, let's see what's in store in Chapter 42: Overshadowed

Chapter 42: Overshadowed
« Reply #84 on: October 27, 2019, 04:06:37 PM »

Just when I'm saying goodbye, to let the new little family settle down for their first night together, the sparkles hit me and I realize, ready or not, my adult years have caught up with me!

Jamey claps and wishes me happy birthday.

And my hair grows higher than Nolan's if that's possible!

I may be older, and entering adulthood, but I am sooo not ready for grandma hair!

And I roll my eyes in disgust at the idea of it, even!

Autumn insists on walking me outside though I know she needs her rest and so do I.

Ward's only a day older than Mitchel, so we both need some down time.

But we share one last sisterly hug and promise to call, visit, and keep closer in touch, despite laundry, and gardening chores, and the responsibilities of motherhood.

I couldn't stand my hair a moment longer and pulled it down around my shoulders as soon as I got in the truck.

And I was happily surprised to see dad up when I got inside.

I started telling him all about Autumn and little Mitchel, his newest grandson.

Dad was eagerly asking me questions when all of a sudden, a strange look came over his face.

And then he started to sparkle.

But not pretty rainbow birthday sparkles, more like golden glowy sparkles.

And then a yellow wispy mist started rising around his feet and he was floating right before my eyes!

I couldn't help myself and started screaming as I realized what was happening.

Nolan heard my screams and came running towards us, dad even turned as if he could hear Nolan's steps.

But he had faded away to a gray essence, only the spirit of him before me, engulfed in the yellow mist and sparkles.

I burst into tears as a figure I've never seen, but have heard about time and time again, appears behind dad, between him and Nolan.

Dad tries a smile, even now trying to comfort me, but the smile is a ghastly mockery of his true smile.

I reach out to dad, screaming in my grief and panic, desperately trying to grab him, to hug him one more time, to keep him in my world.

But it was too late.

My hands just went right on through the gray form he had become and a ghostly golden urn had appeared on the floor beside us!

Mom has joined us and her sobs are echoing through the room, so loud that not even Nolan's phone can drown out her pain and grief.

I'm still desperately trying to touch dad, hold him one more time, but to no avail.

The Grim Reaper has raised his hands and his staff, calling dad's name over and over again.

His words will haunt me for the rest of my days, "Jerad Cartwright Swanson, I come for thee. Your time has arrived. What say you to my request?"

My father was never a brave man, being afraid of most things, only putting himself in danger when his children were at risk.

But seeing my pain, mom's pain at his leaving, he tries to be brave for us and kneels before the hooded black figure.

"Please sir, for my family, I beg of you to give me more time. For their sake, so I may continue to care for them."

My dad's words touch my heart and hope lights up my face as I hear his words and look to the hooded figure to see his response.

Mom is reaching out to dad, to the love of her life, she too hoping for compassion.

We listen intently as he shakes his head and says, "I have given thee all the days that I could, and you have enjoyed more than most, being now at 114 days of age. I cannot extend any more days to thee. The days of life are limited. Would thee take a day from one of your children, or grandchildren? Are thee that type of man?"

My father hears these awful words and horror fills him at the mere thought of them.

He immediately rises off his knees, and says, "No, never that!" and flings his spirit toward the golden urn.

We all stare at the empty spot on the floor, glancing from it to the golden urn.

Trying to reconcile what we have just experienced, seen and heard with our own eyes and ears.

Kobe lets out a yowl, one that echoes our own feelings of pain and loss.

And as we add our own cries to hers, the Grim Reaper fades away to an inky black mist.

Mom and Nolan stand in shocked grief as I wipe away another tear.

Nolan went to check on the kids with a heavy heart.

And mom and I rushed into each others arms, each of us consoling the other, needing the warmth of a body close to us, to let us know we were not alone in our grief.

But even harder than experiencing it ourselves was telling the girls.

Breeze ran into the bathroom and locked the door, shutting us all out, telling us we were wrong, that her grandfather was not gone.

Listening to her sobs tore us all to pieces, and finally Nolan unlocked the door and held her tenderly, letting her weep uncontrollably in the safety of his arms.

Nolan took care of everything, as mom and I were a mess.

He cooked, he cleaned, he made sure Dean and Ward were fed, changed, and loved.

He was my rock, my foundation, through the most excruciating emotional pain I'd ever experienced.

He kept busy with the nectary, when he wasn't taking care of the kids or the house.

Breaking down himself in unobserved moments, but trying to spare us most of his pain.

And he held me close whenever I needed a shoulder to cry on.

He never told me not to cry, but just held me gently and rubbed my back, just being there for me.

Sometimes he even joined me, sharing in my grief with tears of his own.

Losing Grandpa Howard so recently, I thought I knew loss and pain, but losing dad was so much more devastating.

It was like a piece of me was gone, missing, a piece that left an aching hollowness deep inside of me.

We wanted the girls to get back to doing normal things as soon as possible so when the Summer Festival was announced, we sent them both in to town to enjoy it together.

As best they could of course, under the circumstances.

Mimi was there to keep an eye on the girls for us and she said that she saw Breeze break down several times throughout the day.

Outside of the restrooms, when she thought no one was looking.

And when she was talking to her cousin Flynn.

Though Mimi said she was actually smiling a little, telling him a story that dad had told her.

So we weren't as worried about Breeze, as though she was sad, she seemed to be moving through the stages of grief, like the rest of us.

Slowly but surely coming to terms with it, each in our own way, at our own pace.

But Rielle was a totally different matter and we were all worried about her.

We hadn't seen or heard her crying at all. Not once.

Not while she was baking with her toy oven.

Not while she was at the festival with Breeze and Mimi.

Mimi said she was totally composed, just focused on learning to skate the whole time.

But things came to a head later that day when we were all viewing the memorial we'd put together for dad.

Mom and I couldn't bear a graveside service so soon after Grandpa Howard's, so we just had a family gathering at home.

Nolan had found a beautiful display case and mom and I added family photos, dad's master gardener trophy, and placed them beside his urn.

We all stood close together and held hands and each shared a memory of a special time we remembered with dad.

All except Rielle, she just shook her head and stayed silent.

Breeze looked at her sister and said, "It's okay to be sad and cry Ri. We all miss Grandpa and we're sad that he's gone."

But that was the last straw for Rielle, she shocked us all when she shouted, "Stop saying that! Stop lying! Mommy make her stop! Grandpa's not gone! We don't have to be sad and he wouldn't like all of you crying so much."

I fell to my knees and held her close and trying to be as gentle as I could I told her quietly, "Oh sweetie, Breeze is right. It's okay to be sad, to cry, to miss him…."

But Rielle just smiled her soft sweet smile and said, "But mommy, Grandpa's not gone, I see him everywhere."

I held back another sob as best as I could, shook my head to clear my tears, and tried again to explain, but I'd barely opened my mouth when she tipped up my chin and looked directly into my face.

She brushed my tears away and said, "Mommy, I see him every time I look into your face. Every time I see Dean smile, he crooks up the corner of his mouth and shows that dimple he has, just like Grandpa! And just look at this photo, mommy. There's Grandpa in Auntie Rayne's blonde hair, and in Uncle Carter every time he gives Auntie Mysti flowers, so romantic, just like Grandpa! And Auntie Winter has a laugh like his, how it fills the whole room and even though you don't know what's funny, it makes you smile and want to laugh too 'cause it's just so full of fun. And even though I don't really look like him, or have his smile or laugh, Grandpa's part of me too. He's part of all of us, so he's NOT gone. He'll always be right here with his family!"

I share a completely astonished look with Nolan and Mom, and then grab Rielle even closer, hugging her tight and realizing that the empty, hollow feeling inside is no longer quite so empty.

Our young daughter, with her sweet, innocent words, has helped me heal more than any tears could because she's right, oh so right.

Dad isn't gone! He's right here with his family, where he will always be. In our thoughts and memories yes, in our family stories, of course.

But more importantly in our blood, in our hearts.

I whisper into Rielle's ear, "Oh sweetheart, you've got the best part of your grandpa in your big, big, heart and the wisdom to help us all see the truth. And now every time we look at each other, we'll know Grandpa's right here, where he belongs."

I don't say it but I wonder if Rielle embodies the spirit of the Swanson family and if I'm actually holding the child that could be the next heir.

Nolan's birthday was overshadowed by Grandpa Howard's passing and by Ward's birth.

My birthday was overshadowed by my nephew Mitchel's birth and then by the passing of my father.

A passing that devastated most of us.

But with Rielle's words she's helped us more than any tears could by reminding us that dad, her grandpa, will always be with us, the heart of our home.

And though most of us are still a bit sad, mom and Breeze taking it the hardest, the grief that has touched us is slowly healing.

But Breeze's last days of childhood were more traumatic than most, and I worry that it may have affected her as she enters her teen years.

I can only hope that she'll still be my sweet girl, but only time will tell.

I'll take a deep breathe and write it all down in Chapter 43: Triple Birthdays
Coming soon.

Chapter 43: Triple Birthday
« Reply #85 on: October 29, 2019, 10:20:23 AM »

Before the teen party starts, we get a call from Rayne along with some toddler photos of Nicola.

And when they pop up on the phone, we all stare and then start babbling excitedly as Nicola is blonde, she got Rayne's hair color that was passed down from dad!

And this little one is beautiful, probably the most gorgeous toddler I've ever seen.

Here she is in her sweet pink and white spring formal outfit.

Then she's in cute new jammies in two shades of pink.

For the cooler nights, a white pair of jeans and t-shirt with a pink hoodie.

Rayne said she was hoping to get a photo with her cake but Nicola was more interested in a bottle and bedtime than she was in cake.

By the smile on her face we all agreed that she really likes her bottle.

Mom texted back that Nicola is beautiful, to wish her a happy birthday, and she'd be over soon to get in some Grammy time with her.

Breeze had met up with Flynn at the Festival and he came home with her to celebrate their birthdays.

But he's not being nice at all as I overheard him say, "You're such a cry baby! Grandpa's gone, grow up and wipe your baby tears away!"

I decide that that's pretty harsh even for Flynn, but I don't want to make things worse, so I just call Breeze to her cake.

But as Mom and Carter step into the kitchen, Breeze breaks down again.

"I wish, I wish Grandpa was still here! I know Rielle feels he's not gone, but I still miss him!"

We all do our best to make it a happy occasion and even Flynn joins us and blows a birthday horn along with me.

Nolan cheers, Carter twirls a birthday noise maker, and Rielle claps happily for her sister, despite Breeze's comment.

Or maybe because of it.

The two girls are more different than alike, especially in how they perceive their place in the world, but they have definitely become friendlier since Rielle gained that trait and became a child.

But now the gap will widen again as Breeze enters her teen years.

And suddenly the time is upon her and the birthday sparkles surround her!

She braces herself for the transformation as Mom and Flynn continue to cheer.

And we're all a bit shocked when she stands before us a teen.

Breeze more than any of us as she says, "Mom, I can't see! What's wrong with my eyes?"

Flynn scoffs and says, "Your hair is covering them stu…"

But before he can finish his nasty comment, a stern look from Carter has him halting and then continuing with, " …umm, silly girl!"

And he's quite right as Breeze's hair, always kept back by a pink headband, is now covering her face and there's no headband in sight.

But his rude comments don't stop as he adds, "And your clothes! Wow, if I didn't know better I'd swear Grandpa had picked them out himself from thrift store rejects!"

Carter clears his throat to deliver another admonishment to his son, but I step in with Breeze's birthday outfit and we leave the room to help her change.

She quickly dons the pink casual dress mom and I'd picked out but hesitates as she picks up her awful teen clothes.

With a laugh that relieves some of my worries, she says, "Flynn wasn't wrong on that call mom! These are just the type of clothes Grandpa would have picked. Rielle was right, Grandpa's still here, everywhere!"

Then she braids her hair, adding an extension until it grows out long enough to be braided on it's own.

I tell her that mom and I felt she was old enough to choose her other outfits herself, so the rest of her birthday wardrobe is up to her.

She smiles and says, "Great. I'll choose some stuff later. Let's get back to the party. Flynn's probably calling me every name in the book just for waiting this long!"

I quickly grab a piece of Breeze's birthday cake and so does Rielle.

But Flynn's not waiting any longer and goes to stand by the counter as mom and Carter twirl noise makers for him.

Breeze leaves her own cake to blow a party horn.

Nolan joined us now that he's gotten Dean and Ward both taken care of.

I really need to start pulling my parental weight around here again, and not let Nolan do so much of it.

But I shake these thoughts out of my head and focus on the birthday boy.

He's standing so solemnly before his cake, making his wish, and I know Carter and Mysti have high hopes that he'll pick a good trait.

I want a really good before photo so I stand at a better angle to capture his face.

Who would ever believe that this angelic looking boy is mean-spirited?

If I hadn't heard what he'd said to Breeze earlier it would really be hard to believe the stories Carter and Mysti have told us.

Then he spins to face us as the birthday sparkles appear.

I blow a party horn rather loudly as Nolan and Rielle cheer beside me.

Carter, Mom, and Breeze watch expectantly, with Carter the most nervous of all.

And then Carter's face shows his shock as Flynn says, "Finally, now I'm old enough to really put my mean-spirited trait to use! It will work so well with my new Evil trait! Aggie's Corner will be mine! As soon as I fix this childish hairstyle and buy some additional clothes. I'll be charging everything to your card dad so make sure there's plenty of money in your account."

None of the rest of us speak as Carter's pain is plain for all to see.

Flynn strides into the bathroom to check out his new look and nods confidently at what he sees.

First he tries out an athletic outfit and we're all shocked by how muscular he is.

Carter and Mysti are both fine-boned yet Flynn has solidly muscled arms and powerful legs.

He flexes and nods to himself, happy in his new found strength.

Then I flinch back as I overhear his next words.

"Yes, this will do nicely for my outerwear. The blue deepens my eyes and the black, well, the black reflects the true color of my heart! And soon this town will know exactly what it means to have a Swanson in control. And not one of those goody two-shoes ones either!"

When Flynn returns and grabs a piece of cake, he snidely says to Breeze, "Are you still whining!?! Get over it already! What did you pick for your teen trait anyway? If it was available, I'm sure it would have been cry-baby!"

Choking back a sob, Breeze replies, "I didn't get to pick since I only got a 'B' in grade school. But I got Angler, like your dad. But I've always liked fishing…"

Flynn cuts her off with, "What a waste of a trait choice! Fishing??? My dad tried that with me before I refused to go.  The only good thing about it is being alone, but if you go with someone it defeats the whole purpose!"

Carter has heard more than enough and says, "That was uncalled for! Apologize to Breeze right now! You will hold your tongue and be civil to others, you're still living under my roof…"

Flynn snarls, "Not for long pops! As soon as I get my trust fund I'm out of there. As for the apology."

He pauses and transforms his face into a look of pure innocence and says, "Sorry cuz. Happy Birthday!"

What's worse than anything is that he actually looks and sounds sorry, nothing like the mean-spirited, evil teen that stood before us moments before.

And as I share a look with the other adults, a shiver runs down my spine as I realize the power this young boy has, an uncanny ability to school his face and voice, his very demeanor, to have those around him see and hear exactly what he wants them to!

After cake, Carter and Flynn said their goodbyes, Carter hugging mom goodbye, and Flynn heading off with a casual, "Later dudes, much later, if I have anything to do with it!"

A comment that had Carter shaking his head and apologizing to all of us.

But we shake off Flynn's negative vibe as Breeze decides to check out some styles for her own birthday clothes.

For her fishing days or workouts, casual patched blue jean shorts, with a black cropped tank and flats, for all those jumping jacks or hikes through fields.

For a co-ed group outing to the movies or a festival, she slips on some casual flat sandals and a flirty, hot pink, off the shoulder crop top, with multiply black bracelets up both forearms, with the same shorts.

It crosses my mind that even though she's not frugal herself, she may have picked up on it when she was younger, watching her grandpa turn off lights and shop at the thrift store.

And my thoughts are confirmed when she switches out the casual jean shorts and adds a short, ruffled, black skirt and dressier black, heeled sandals to the same pink top.

An outfit she tells us would be perfect for dance clubs or celebrity parties which she's hoping to start attending soon.

And host some rockin' parties of her own!

I share a look with mom, but all she does is raise an eyebrow and smirk, and I have a feeling we are in for some noisy teenage parties soon.

For her prom or dressier formal occasions, it's hot pink and sequins all the way, with matching hot pink stiletto heels!

As much as I hate to admit it, my little girl is nowhere in sight!

For a luncheon or dinner out with Mom or her Mimi, she chooses a more classic look, with a short, straight skirt and silk camisole in shades of plum and lilac with silver, open-toed, sling backs.

For swimming this summer, a skimpy bikini in a shimmery, metallic pink.

I really want to suggest a one-piece or maybe a cover up, but when mom gives me a quick shake of her head, I hold my tongue.

Though I'm not sure her father's going to be able to hold his!

For outerwear she chooses; magenta jeans and a gray camisole under a black leather jacket edged with metal studs and zippered cuffs, a bright pink scarf, to set it off, and a black collared choker with black low-heeled boots.

And when I ask why, Breeze's smile tightens and she says, "To push Flynn's buttons!"

Then as she showed it off, her words clue us in on where she's going with this as she says, "I've been listening to a lot of oldies on the radio when I practice my dancing and there's one I like in particular."

She stomped her booted foot and sang, "These boots are made for walking and that's just what they'll do. One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you!"

Mom and I look on a bit concerned and that concern grew when Breeze continued the song with, "And you keep a thinkin' you'll never get burned. I've just found me a brand new box of matches."

And our concern is justified when she improvises the ending with, "Don't play with fire with a Dean boy! That's one lesson you're gonna learn!"

So we had a sweet birthday with Rayne and Johnny's little Nicola becoming a toddler.

Breeze having a rather sad one as she still misses her Grandpa Jerad, and though she didn't get to pick her teen trait, she was happy to get Angler.

Well, she was until her Cousin Flynn, who was mean-spirited and then picked evil for his teen trait, made some rather snarky comments!

Now our oldest child is determined to show him just what it means to mess with a Swanson who's also a Dean!

Will our family survive the battle of the teens?

I hope so!

I'll try to capture every angsty teen pyro moment of it in Chapter 44: The Terrible Teens

Chapter 44: The Terrible Teens
« Reply #86 on: November 03, 2019, 12:13:07 AM »

The next evening, as Rielle eats a piece of birthday cake, Breeze starts on her homework and I see that lost look come over Nolan's face.

I know he's thinking about dad, but trying to hide his grief, trying to help the girls and the rest of us, move on.

But behind me I hear a sob of someone overpowered by dad's loss.

I turn and see Carter with his face in his hands, taking in dad's memorial.

My heart goes out to him but before I can act on it, more drama takes place in the kitchen.

Hearing Carter, Mom and Breeze break down again, both wiping away tears.

They turn to each other for consolation, finding solace in a comforting hug.

Then mom offers to help Breeze with her homework and the two of them sit on the floor.

As they focus on something practical, I cheer Nolan up with a passionate kiss.

We all have ways of dealing with grief, and I find staying close to him works best for us.

But someone else finds pleasure in others misery and as Flynn settles down with his own homework, he says, "You people put on quite the show. Three of you crying like babies and two of you needing to get a room! This place is a riot, even more of a mess than being at home with the twins, the little brats! I don't know why I even came over here after school with you Breeze. I must have lost my mind. And before anyone asks, No, I don't need any help with my homework."

After Flynn's nasty comments, the room grows still and silent as we all process his remarks.

Nolan leaves the room to help Rielle with her homework, but his clenched jaw reveals his disapproval of Flynn's manner.

But he tries to shake it off as he settles down with our youngest daughter and they go over her math problems.

Breeze decides Kobe's scratching requires a flea bath so she occupies herself with that task.

Carter's calmed down and settled himself in a rocker enjoying the soothing company of our young boys.

Little Ward is resting peacefully in his crib.

While Dean is trying to put blocks in his peg box that's somehow ended up behind him!

Carter even manages a small smile as he says, "I don't think it works that way little guy. You'll have to turn back around."

But it's mom's startled cry that has me rushing to the hall and I stare is wonderment as I see dad in his ghostly form!

None of us moved for what seemed like hours, but was only a few seconds at best.

Then mom rushed into dad's arms and he held her just like he's done for all their years together.

Flynn just stared at the two of them, apparently at a loss for words for once.

As mom took care of Ward, I finally found my feet moving, and then I was running straight into dad's arms!

It was such an odd feeling, having him hug me, hold me, as a ghost, but comforting as well.

He squeezed me tight and whispered, "It's okay Summer. I'm here, I'll always be close by."

I gulped back tears as his words made the fist in my chest release it's hold on my heart, but I also felt and odd fluttering inside.

I decide it's just the wonder and excitement of having dad back in our lives, even if it's just his ghostly presence.

But the next morning, I realize the fluttering had nothing to do with dad, but everything to do with how close Nolan and I have been lately.

I excitedly share my news with Nolan, "I'm pregnant again! Isn't it wonderful?!"

It took a moment for my words to sink in but Nolan was just as excited as I was.

But over at the school, other family members are not happy with each other at all!

Breeze tried letting bygones be bygones with Flynn the next afternoon at school but he just walked right by!

And a bunch of her friends, and his, saw the deliberate snub!

Even though she was upset, Breeze had promised Rielle that she'd take her to the Festival to sell some of her baked goods so she kept her promise.

Then she met her Aunt Mysti in the park and found out that things had come to a head between Flynn and Carter and Flynn had moved out, declaring himself an emancipated minor!

When Breeze asked where, Mysti reluctantly gave her the address and said, "But I think you need to give him some space to cool off."

But having Flynn cool off isn't exactly what Breeze has in mind.

Once she gets Rielle safely home, she tells us she needs to run an errand but that she won't be out too late.

Flynn's new place is very secluded up in the mountains by a peaceful pond, and even though she can hear fish jumping, she's not here for fishing.

She was still feeling totally humiliated by Flynn's actions earlier that day and she was going to make him pay for it!

Taking a deep breathe, she snuck up to the porch and deposited her 'gift', quickly striking a match and as soon as the flames appeared, she rang the doorbell.

And ran for the cover of darkness!

Not too far away though as she just had to see Flynn's reaction.

And she didn't have to wait for very long.

Not expecting company way out here, especially on his first night in his new place, he frowned as he opened the door.

She smothered her giggles behind a hand as she saw his face as he noticed the flaming bag.

Then he did exactly what she was hoping for, he stomped the bag good!

But once the flames were out and he saw the mess on his porch and on his shoes, his yell could be heard for miles!

"What the??!! Yuck! That's disgusting! I know you're out there Breeze! Anything to do with fire has a Dean written all over it! This is war!"

And in the middle of Flynn's irate phone call, the sparkles hit Ward!

I didn't fall asleep this time, but I was so distracted by Breeze's behavior that I still forgot about his birthday.

But I did have the presence of mind to have mom take photos.

One just as the sparkles spun him around.

And another of him in all his toddler cuteness!

I know I'm prejudice but my toddlers are completely adorable!

With baby #5 making an appearance soon, I didn't waste any time and started teaching him his toddler skills right away.

I'm a real pro at this stuff now and Ward was a fast learner.

He was toddling eagerly towards me in no time at all.

As a reward, we took a moment for some play time.

A little attack of the claw always puts toddlers in a great mood and Ward laughed with glee.

And before his bedtime, I squeezed in a much needed potty training session.

He was a bit puzzled by it, like most toddlers are the first time, but he managed quite well.

And while he was busy doing his business, I patted my tummy and told him that soon he was going to be a big brother.

But when Breeze got home, got her shower for school and got ready for bed, I took her outside for a little chat.

I told her that Flynn's attitude was definitely hard to swallow, but that she needed to be the bigger person and not sink to his level.

But when I thought about Flynn's phone call, his ranting and raving, and pictured him stomping out the flames only to find all that poo, well, I couldn't help myself and I laughed until I almost wet my pants.

Then I tried to give her the sternest look I could muster in my mirth and said, "You can't tell anyone I laughed!"

Breeze couldn't hide her own smile then and we both broke into peals of laughter!

Well, the gauntlet had been thrown down by Flynn and Breeze dug in her heels and picked it up.

I don't think Flynn ever expected such a prank from his mild-mannered cousin, but still waters can run deep.

With that said, I'm hoping things cool down a bit between them. (Hah, cool down with a Dean involved!)

But with so much going on in the next few days, we need a respite from the feuding teens.

Though we're not going to get much of one as Rielle ages up soon after Dean, so both of our daughters will be teens.

And our fifth child should be making an appearance soon.

Hopefully, I'll pay closer attention and be prepared with cake. Lots of cake!

Chapter 45: Birthdays and a Budding Romance
« Reply #87 on: November 05, 2019, 03:54:26 PM »

There are always special moments in any family, but seeing siblings bond is one of the best, especially for family-oriented sims like me.

Mom and I rocked, chatted, and watched Dean and Ward play with their toys.

Seeing our two youngest family members enjoying each others companionship was so much nicer than the teen cousins that barely tolerated each other.

And when Ward was on his own, he kept himself occupied with his doll, Puzzle.

He'd chat, sing, and play with it for hours at a time, only stopping when others interrupted him.

For necessary things, like Nolan trying his hand at potty training.

Or me talking the time to teach him how to talk.

With the older kid's focusing on age appropriate skills as well.

Rielle trying her hand at painting.

And me getting out of the house for a bit to give Breeze her first driving lesson.

It wasn't exactly smooth sailing, but it's a right of passage that each teen goes through sooner or later.

Breeze would have preferred later, but I wanted her to at least give it a try and get some practice in her first week as a teen, before Rielle aged up and we had two needing to learn.

So we went out for a quick lesson before school that morning.

I didn't want to distract her to much, but I wanted her to relax, so we chatted about her field trip to the theater coming up this week in school.

With the girls at school, Nolan took a moment to make me and our new child feel special, chatting away in the silly way that fathers-to-be do, though they usually have nothing on grandmothers!

After school, Breeze took Rielle to the Festival Park, this time to enjoy the festivities as Rielle had spent their earlier visit selling baked goods.

"Can I try a snow cone Breeze? They look really yummy!"

"Sure Rielle. Mom gave me some money for snacks."

"Do you want me to get one for you?"

"No thanks, I'm not very hungry. I have last lunch at school, but you go ahead. I'll wait for you in the picnic area. "

Rielle waits her turn in line and decides on a rainbow snow cone and sits at a table enjoying the rush of the sugary treat.

Breeze, standing nearby watching the festivities, noticed two boys from school.

Henry Crumplebottom she knew, but the other boy she'd only seen in the halls as they didn't have any classes together.

To her surprise, when their eyes meet, he smiles and comes over and introduces himself.

"Hi, I'm Barrett Rios, I've seen you at school, Breeze right?"

"Yes, Breeze Swanson."

And the two of them starting chatting away about their classes and interests with Barrett coming alive when he started talking about the latest comic book that had just been released.

When Barrett asked if she needed to be home at a specific time, Breeze realized that she'd been neglecting her sisterly duties and looked around for Rielle.

She didn't see her anywhere and called home in a panic.

Hearing the distress in her voice, I tell her everything is fine, that Rielle biked home an hour ago, but since Rielle's almost a teen herself, she's old enough to be on her own sometimes.

Relieved that her sister is safely at home, Breeze asked me if she could hang around the Festival for a bit longer, even though it was Dean's birthday.

I gave her permission, as Dean was tired and would only be staying up long enough for cake, but told her not to be too late since it was a school night.

Once she was off the phone, she let Barrett know she could hang around for awhile.

And then their conversation got a bit more personal.

Breeze asked him his sign knowing it wasn't very original, but she wanted to let him know she was interested in getting to know him better.

And when he just smiled and said he was a Virgo, she knew he was interested too.

So she boldly asked if he was seeing anyone special.

When Barrett stepped closer and told her that he'd met someone recently that he thought could be special, her stomach fluttered when she realized he meant her!

And when he asked her to watch the stars, she simply nodded as he found a spot and settled down close to her.

When his arm brushed hers, the flutters increased, and this time her heart started beating faster.

As they both turned their eyes to the darkening skies, the first stars appeared, their sparkly brightness only surpassed by the budding feeling of young love in their hearts!

While Breeze was enjoying her first unofficial date, Nolan enjoyed one last toddler moment with Dean before his birthday.

After I helped him blow out his candles and placed him on the floor, he did the birthday sparkle dance while the rest of us cheered him on.

And then our oldest son became a child.

Since he'll be joining his sisters at school in the morning, he quickly ate some cake and headed off to sleep in one of the bunk beds.

I was hoping to get some sleep too, but my labor started right after Breeze got home from the park.

She panicked a bit, during my first few contractions.

But then, typical teen, her thoughts turned to her new romance, which I could tell from the bemused look on her face.

I really wanted to share a mother/daughter moment and ask her all about it, but it just wasn't the time.

First of all, it probably would have embarrassed her and secondly, the middle of labor is not the best time to chat with your oldest daughter about boys.

But it could certainly make her a bit more careful!

After the usual labor pains, our third son is born.

He's easily impressed and loves the outdoors and we name him after his paternal grandfather, Bennie Dean.

Welcome to the family, Ben Swanson!

With my labor safely over, and our happy healthy son fed, changed, and sleeping in his crib, we all finally head to bed.

Early the next morning, with the older kids at school and Mom watching over Ward and Ben, Nolan and I spend some much needed time in the nectary garden.

With family life being so hectic, we'd splurged and gotten a garden grow station down here as you can't use sprinklers on the indoor garden plots.

And watering all our plants by hand was just out of the question as it had become much too time consuming.

But we still needed to weed and harvest everything by hand, which put me closer than ever to mastering gardening.

But motherly duties are still my priority, so with the nectary flourishing, I leave Nolan down there making another batch of nectar, while I head back to the house and check on the kids.

I play with Ben a bit, change his diaper, feed him a bottle, give him some cuddle time, and pop him back in his crib as I hear the front door close as the younger kids get home from school.

But, to my surprise, it's not Rielle I find in the foyer doing homework, but my niece Stephanie, Carter and Mysti's daughter!

"Well, hello Stephanie, what a nice surprise to see you here. Did you come home from school with Rielle?"

Focused on her homework, she says, "No, I came home with Dean and Rielle went to my house with Samantha!"

I smile and ask where Dean is and she tells me he's out on the front porch doing his homework.

Then she frowns and says, "Boys are so weird!"

I head outside to check on Dean, telling her she won't think that way when she become a teen.

But I know she doesn't believe me when she says, "I'd rather go to the library and study than spend time with a nasty boy!"

I tell her that, unlike most young girls, her Uncle Nolan and I have been best friends since grade school.
"Some sims just know from a young age when they find their life partner. You take your time sweetie and you'll find a special someone when the time is right. If that's what you want."

After Rielle got home, she shared a photo of her and Samantha in front of Carter and Mysti's new house in town.

It was really quite modern and so different from their usual style that I wonder what prompted the move.

I mused out loud that maybe it was the memories of Flynn in their old home?

Mom confirmed my thought and said that Carter told her it was just too stressful going by Flynn's empty room so they opted for a complete change of scene.

But shortly after Rielle got home, and I was all excited about remembering the cake this time, we started getting an influx of visitors, including Mimi Murielle, and Dean's school friend, Tyrone Crumplebottom.

Then Breeze says, "Oh, did I forget to mention that I planned a birthday party for Rielle?"

Mom laughs from the rocker and says, "It's about time we had a party around here! Liven up the place a bit!"

With five children, two cats, extensive gardens, orchards, and the nectary, I'm not sure we need any more livening up, but a party does sound fun.

We have a house full again with Ben's birth.

And with Dean's child birthday, three of our children are now in school.

But Breeze surprised us all by planning a party for her sister's teen birthday.

I have a feeling that there are plenty of surprises in the upcoming weeks as our children grow up.

But since my children need to become teens for me to complete my LTW, let's get this party started!

We'll see in Chapter 46: Two Teens in the House

Chapter 46: Two Teens in the House
« Reply #88 on: November 07, 2019, 07:58:59 PM »

As family and friends gather in the kitchen, I notice Flynn's still snubbing Breeze.

Or maybe he's giving his father the cold shoulder.

Either way, Nolan's noticed and put on his 'military face', a rather stern look that shows his displeasure in something or someone.

A face I don't like seeing at all.

But Carter and Breeze just start clapping and cheering, staying focused on the birthday girl.

While Jeannette Crumplebottom grabs a party noise maker getting ready to do her part as well.

We all get into the party spirit, cheering, blowing party horns and twirling noise makers.

Even Flynn loses his snooty look and watches his cousin with interest.

Then Rielle makes her wish and blows out her candles.

As the sparkles hit, we all wait to see her transformation.

Though I'm excited for Rielle's teen birthday, being another step closer to completing my LTW, Nolan makes that face again!

And he's staring at Rielle this time.

Now I'm thinking the face has nothing to do with Flynn and everything to do with another pretty teen daughter dressed in short shorts and a hot pink off the shoulder top!

A daughter who earned an 'A' in grade school and got to choose her teen trait.

And she chose one of her grandfather's traits as her own, Rielle is now a Hopeless Romantic!

My enthusiasm for another teen in the house wanes just a bit as I wonder what we're in store for with Breeze being a party animal and Rielle a hopeless romantic.

She grabs her cake and others follow as she heads down to the nectary.

Her Aunts Autumn and Sammi, along with Breeze's love interest, Barrett Rios.

Autumn keeps all of them entertained with anecdotes of life on the road in her music career.

While Rielle' s thoughts dwell on new clothes.

She likes the pink top, but being matchy-matchy with her sister isn't her first choice.

So once she's finished with her cake, she picks out a new hairstyle and a new teen wardrobe, in purples that compliment her hair, now that you can see the purple streaks again.

For athletic, a deep purple tee with black short overalls and matching purple sash.

And for her swimwear, a green and purple striped two-piece that I know will have her father making that face yet again!

Lastly she chooses a lightweight 3/4 sleeve  black denim jacket and short ruffled black skirt with white leggings, set off by a light purple buttoned top, for cooler summer nights.

This second daughter of mine has the striking Dean cheekbones set off by her paternal grandmother's unique blonde and purple streaked hair.

Then she shows off her new everyday look to those in the nectary.

A cute white ruffled denim skirt with a white and purple checked top.

But Breeze has joined them and Barrett quickly finished his cake to chat with her.

"We don't have a pool but the sprinklers are really fun to run through. Want to join me Barret?"

Barrett looks into her eyes and says, "Maybe some other time. I'd rather look at you in the light. You're really rockin' that suit!"

Breeze doesn't play coy or try to deny it, she just smiles and says, "Well thanks, you're not looking so bad yourself!"

And with those opening remarks it wasn't long before they found themselves in each others arms.

With the nectary rapidly emptying of others, as Sammi picks up the last of the dessert plates and heads back to the kitchen to leave the young lovers alone.

Alone at last, Breeze gently strokes Barrett's cheek, saying, "I really like you a lot Barrett."

He leans in to the touch of her hand, and asks, "Enough to be my date for Prom on Saturday?"

Breeze whispers, "I wouldn't dream of going with anyone else."

Breeze hesitates for just a moment then leans forward and lightly touches her lips to his.

Tentative and timid thought it is, they share their first kiss!

Barrett places his hand in hers and shyly says, "I was going to wait until prom, but Saturday's too far away. Will you be my girl Breeze?"

Breeze squeezes his hand and says, "I thought you'd never ask! Of course I'll be your girl Barrett!"

Then their romantic interlude is broken by the arrival of her grandmother, her sister, and Jeannette, who says, "Rielle said she left you two down here! I've been looking all over for you. I'm overseeing the decorating committee for Prom and so far I'm it. You'll all help me right?"

The other three teens nod as Rielle says, "Let's pick a better theme than last years committee did! Vintage video games isn't my idea of what a Prom should be." Then her voice going soft and dreamy she adds, "If I was going, I'd want something really romantic where I could fall in love!"

Her grandmother chuckles and says, "Most young girls do, but I wouldn't say that around your father!"

Jeannette adds, "I won't turn down any help that's for sure. And something romantic sounds great. But why aren't you going Rielle?"

Rielle shrugs and says, "Prom is all about going with someone special. The boy you've had a crush on all year, or your steady guy, or someone new you meet and it's love at first sight!"

Jeanette looks thoughtful as she says, "That would be romantic, going with a crush…I hope mine asks me."

Brooke says, "You are a Crumplebottom girl, I have never known one to sit back and wait for things to happen! If you've got a secret crush, let him know and ask him to prom!"

Rielle smiles and says, "Go for it Jeannette! If there was a boy I was interested in, I sure would!"

With the party ending and most of the guests heading off to their own homes, I find Nolan in the nursery/sitting room chatting with Ward.

"Promise me you'll stay little for a bit longer my boy. Your sisters are growing up way too fast for daddy!"

Of course Ward has no idea what his father's saying, but he latches on to the one word he does know well.

"Daddy! Daddy! Daddy!" he repeats bouncing excitedly in Nolan's arms.

My big strong guy melts and cuddles Ward close.

I hate to break up such a touching moment, but I've got a big problem and I need Nolan's help.

I know he's going to be shocked, but there's no way to prepare him, so I step into the room.

When Nolan sees me he yells, "Summer!?! What on earth? What's happened? Did you eat something funky from the garden!?!"

I shake my toad head and croak, "Witch, cursed me! She told me I could be restored by a kiss. If anyone would! And then she laughed like crazy! So please kiss me! This is awful Nolan! What if I scare the children?"

Nolan glances down at Ward who's looking at me quite puzzled but he doesn't seem to be frightened of me.

"Mommy? Where face?"

Nolan thinks fast and says, "Mommy's practicing for Halloween buddy. But I think it's a bit too soon. Let me put you down and see if I can help her get this toad head off."

With Ward safely on the floor and playing with his doll, Nolan places a hand on my toadified face and says, "I'm sorry Summer. But a witch curse, I find it hard to believe…"

I croak loudly and yell, "We have one brother-in-law who's a werewolf, and another that's a fairy, and I have a toad head! I'm croaking Nolan and flies seem really appetizing right now! How much more proof do you need that Supernaturals' exist?! So just kiss me blast it!"

Nolan sighs and says, "I can't do it on those toad lips, too slimey looking, turn your head a bit. Maybe I could try one on your cheek. Do you think that will work?"

I can't stand my predicament a moment longer and croak out, "I don't know Nolan, I've never been a toad before. Just do it!"

Nolan squeezes his eyes shut, quickly brushes my toadified cheek with his lips and steps back.

And nothing happens!

We both just stand there in shock and I'm horrified as I wonder if I'll be a toad for the rest of my life!

Then suddenly there's a loud crack and we're both engulfed in a puff of dark green smoke.

I can hear Nolan anxiously asking if I'm alright.

But the smoke is so thick and noxious I don't want to breathe it in, and I stand there silently holding my breath.

And thankfully, when the smoke clears, I am myself again!

The witch curse has been broken, but I still have an unsettling desire to check the trashcan for flies!

I shake my head to clear the nasty thought away, and see Nolan looking at me with relief and disbelief.

"You still don't believe do you!?! Well, I'm not going near that witch again, that's one experience I never want to repeat."

Mom missed the whole thing as she was over at the elixir shop consigning our latest harvest.

But with my close call with that witch's curse, I'm going to have her check for cure elixirs next time she's there.

It might not be something as harmless as a toad next time!

But I'm still in shock over the whole experience and I take Nolan's advice and lie down for a nap.

A few hours later, I hear a noise and wake up, and I feel different.

I glance in the mirror to make sure and my own reflection stares back at me, so it's not that.

Then it hits me, that 'ka'ching' I heard was our most recent sales being tallied up.

I've topped my career and joined dad, mom, and Nolan as a Master Gardener!

Both Breeze and Rielle are in high school now and Breeze has a boyfriend that's taking her to Prom.

Dean's in grade school and wants to invite some of his friends over for a slumber party.

We've told him a weekend night would be best for a slumber party, so they won't have to worry about school the next morning.

And Breeze is begging to throw her first teen party, but we tell her the same thing, a weekend night is best.

With our children growing up, it looks like our weekends are going to be filled with parties.

Of course Mom is thrilled that our house will be 'party central' as it brings back her glory days as a party girl back in the city.

Just thinking about all of it makes me yearn for a break.

But with two teens, a grade schooler, a toddler, and a newborn, we couldn't take a vacation.

Could we?

Let's find out in Chapter 47: While The Adults Are Away

An explanation of why I'm using thumbnails
« Reply #89 on: November 10, 2019, 12:41:02 PM »
Some use thumbnails to help post photos in the forum. Which helps the lag here as hosting thousands of photos for every story and post can put a real drag on the Forum.

My understanding is that the Forum wasn't really made to host photos to that extent, so I use image hosting. (upload photos to a different site)

I actually played around with a blog, but I didn't find even the simplest one very user friendly for my stories.

Then MrsFlynn, a wonderful Forum moderator, found the imaging mod I'm currently using.

Using the imaging mod, along with Carl's updates, has eliminated the issues of my photos not showing up at all, or constantly throwing error messages when I was trying to post new chapters here.

Update: I checked into the imaging mod and the thumbnails are a fixed size through the mod that can only be changed by individually modifying each photo's bbcode directly in the Forum post.

Unfortunately this is a lengthy process that would not be a viable solution at this time.
