Though we'd become used to ghostly family visitors, even encouraged them, this particular one caught us by surprise.
Grandpa Nolan floated serenely by Keri like he'd done it all his ghostly life, like the other family ghosts.
But he hadn't!
The family journal only noted one stellar appearance; when he visited Grandma Summer while she was still alive.
Once she passed, the two of them were content in the Netherworld, not visiting us at all.
Maybe his urn being moved downstairs helped?
There was only one way to find out.
Ask!
So, after my initial nervousness disappeared, I struck up a conversation.
Or tried to.
But Grandpa Nolan wasn't quite as chatty as the other family ghosts.
He gave me a smile, a brief nod, and a wave.
And then sat down in one of the nursery rockers!
Rocking steadily but not saying a word.
Grandma Brooke sat down in a rocker too, asking, "Is everything okay, Nolan?"
But he just rocked without responding.
Growing anxious, Grandma Brooke blurted, "Has something happened to Summer, Nolan!?! To her ghost in the Netherworld?"
Grandpa Nolan startled at Summer's name, but still didn't respond.
Exasperated with his silence, Grandma Brooke, sighed and asked, "Can you at least tell us if you, Summer, or Rielle are planning on eating Scott's ambrosia? Trying to come back to us?"
The only answer was the brief rush of sound as Grandpa Nolan's ghostly form turned into the familiar golden essence as he returned to his urn.
Grandma Brooke was so disturbed by the event that Grandpa Jerad sat with her on the couch trying to comfort her.
But she wouldn't be consoled, angrily asking, "After all this time of staying away, why would he show up now but refuse to answer our questions!?!"
Grandpa Jerad looked away, unable to come up with a satisfying answer and calm Grandma Brooke down.
From the archway, I said, "I don't know why he won't talk to us, but I think I know the answer as to why he's showing up now. I moved their urns from upstairs down to the display stand in the hall. Where yours used to sit. Maybe because we spend so much more time down here, our family energy called to him?"
Grandma Brooke thought about it and said, "That's a pretty good theory, Scott. And maybe Nolan wasn't refusing to answer, maybe he can't yet. Maybe he and Summer have spent so much time in the Netherworld that just materializing is all he can do!"
"Well, I won't give up on them! I'll keep making ambrosia and give them every opportunity to eat it!"
After seeing Grandpa Nolan's ghost and Grandma Brooke's heartache, I couldn't wait any longer to see Terrin.
He and Iris, with Patches and Shereen, had rented a house across the street and had moved in last week.
We'd offered to help, but Terrin had insisted they could do it on their own.
Then he'd strangely added that he'd call us soon to set up a time to visit!
Something was going on and I wasn't waiting any longer to see my son.
And my reception was just as odd.
Shereen was giving Iris a nervous glance while Patches exclaimed, "Oh, what brings you by Mr. Swanson?"
From behind them Iris sighed and said, "It's okay girls, I'll take it from here."
Shereen moved toward the waiting cab as Iris stepped forward.
Patches, ever the loyal friend, tapped her foot, pursed her lips and said, "Are you sure, Iris?"
Iris, her usual confident self, said firmly, "They had to find out sooner or later."
"Find out what Iris?"
But my words died in my throat as Iris's form registered in my mind.
Her very pregnant form!
I didn't even acknowledge Terrin's call from the front porch.
Frankly, I was so stunned, I no longer had the power of speech!
As Iris walked around me, I kept my eyes trained on Shereen as the cab tooted impatiently, and Patches gave her a cheery goodbye.
My gaze looking anywhere but at Iris's bulging belly!
Iris gave her stomach a pat and said, "It's okay to look, Mr. Swanson, even stare. I know it's a shock, finding me pregnant. Believe me, Terrin and I were more than a bit surprised at how quickly it happened!"
I finally spluttered, "But HOW Iris!?! PlantSims don't have babies like the rest of us! Even you and Terrin came from Forbidden Fruit!"
Iris waved her hands trying to calm me down, "I know. I know. Please let me explain. It's rather a long story and pretty technical…"
"The short version, please, Iris! In simple words I can understand."
"Okay. The short version. All of my mother's tests had determined that I could not bear a child, simply produce Forbidden Fruit and pass on my genetics to a PlantSim baby that way, without the child actually having a biological father."
"I understand that I read about it when I was researching about Terrin's condition."
"Right. But after meeting Karam, Petal, and Barbara, at SimU, and finding out they all had one PlantSim parent, I asked Professor Dorsey how such a thing was possible, a PlantSim having biological children. She told me she fell in love with a human student, and they wanted to have children together. She changed her major to Science and Medicine and came up with a medical treatment to allow for PlantSim conception and birth, just like humans. Karam, Petal, Barbara, and their siblings, are proof that it worked for all three test couples! Shawn, Shasta, and Shereen were a little different as they were test tube babies with Forbidden Fruit DNA added later…"
"Short version, Iris!"
"Right. Well, they never had a couple who were both PlantSims to test."
Horrified, I shout, "So they used you and Terrin!?!"
Iris sighs and says, "Of course not. We volunteered. I underwent the treatment before we left Uni."
"But that was only a week ago…"
"Yes, the results happened faster than any of us had predicted. Professor Dorsey thought it would take several treatments before I could actually conceive…but it happened right away. And…you're looking at the results. Terrin has been bursting to tell you for days, but I wanted to wait until after our child was born, here and healthy, and safe, you know."
"More like a 'fait accompli', Iris!"
Iris couldn't help her smirk as she said, "It's easier to ask for forgiveness after the fact rather than permission up front!"
Trying not to smile I add, "Typical Iris logic, but it's not like you and Terrin needed permission, Iris. You're both over the age of consent."
Iris frowned, "You don't know my mother! She would have wanted to review all the research, interview all three of the other couples, run multiple tests on ALL of the offspring, and list the pros and cons of ME undergoing the procedure, while my father totally freaked about everything that COULD go wrong!"
"I see. That's why you kept it a secret?"
"Well, it didn't seem fair to tell one set of parents and not the other."
With a hesitant breath, she added, "So, you're not mad about the pregnancy?"
I pulled her into a hearty hug and said, "Not mad about the pregnancy, Iris. Concerned about this whole process, especially that you didn't tell us sooner. But how could I be mad? My son is going to be a father, making me a grandfather!"
Keri was having her own heart-to-heart with Terrin by the front porch.
"A baby, Terrin!?! Why didn't you tell us as soon as you knew? There's so much to do! A wedding to plan and a baby shower…"
Terrin shook his head and said, "Sorry, Mom. Iris said there was no way she was going to walk down the isle a pregnant bride! So, we got married at City Hall right after we arrived in town. But I'm sure Lacey will be all about a big family wedding!"
"Lacey isn't even engaged and she and Lawrence are focusing on their careers."
"But they'll get married sometime. And since Joran's staying on the farm and head over heels for Loretta, he'll be proposing to her soon after he graduates!"
"Nice try, but your siblings upcoming wedding plans isn't going to get you out of having some kind of party!"
"But a new baby will. Honestly, Mom, we're going to be too busy for anything but birthday parties once our child is born. I see enough of crowds when I'm singing and Iris's work at the hospital is demanding."
With hope in her voice, Keri asked, "You're both working here in AP? So, you're planning on staying in town for a while?"
Terrin smiled, "For a while. I want the baby to know his or her grandparents. Then we'll head to Sunset Valley to spend some time with Iris's family."
"But what about Bridgeport and all your dreams?"
Terrin said, "Bridgeport isn't going anywhere, Mom! We'll get there someday. Right now, this is where we want to be."
Keri was so happy with the news she gave Terrin a big hug.
"That's wonderful, Terrin! We'll have you with us a little longer, Iris, and a new baby too!"
Then it was my turn to speak to my son.
"Congratulations, Terrin! I'd thought I'd just be congratulating you on your engagement , but a baby is….life-changing!"
Terrin's proud smile was proof enough that he was really looking forward to becoming a father.
His words cemented it, "Don't I know it! I've been reading baby books and making sure Iris gets plenty of rest. I've even coordinated my gigs with Patches and Shereen's schedules so that one of us is always here with Iris."
"With your attention to detail, I'm sure you'll make a great father!"
"Coming from you, Dad, that means a lot!"
Excitedly I added, "And a violet nursery would be just the thing! I know it's not one of the traditional pastel colors, but it's been proven that babies see black and white first, then bright colors so…"
Terrin's face lights up when I mention a nursery but, instead of agreeing with my suggestion, he says, "Let me show you the house, Dad. It's got four bedrooms and four bathrooms, and it's just perfect for us!"
He explained, "These overview shots will give you the best view. Here's the main floor, dominated by the huge kitchen and dining area, with the stairs to the basement and upper floor. The living room is through the archway with a huge bay window to bring in lots of natural light. The back of the house has two ensuite bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with twin beds. And off the kitchen, tucked in between the living room and a bathroom, is the nursery!"
"The nursery was the icing on the cake, especially for Iris, as the designer had painted two of the walls in a pinky/purple color then added a soft yellow above the chair rail on the other two walls with green, pink, and purple butterflies flying all over! The perfect room for Iris's daughter!"
"It's not violet but it's amazing. I can see why Iris loves it. But what if you have a boy?"
"Well, your favorite color is violet, so I don't see why it wouldn't work for both! But we can always change it."
The upper floor was amazing as well, as the whole floor was a huge master bedroom with ensuite.
The main room was painted a soft green with a chair rail breaking up the walls and it was large enough for Iris's Science station and computer desk along the wall opposite the double bed with plenty of space in between.
The windowed bump out was perfect for Terrin's double easel painting studio, letting in plenty of natural light.
Last, but not least, there was a huge open concept basement that had a complete band set up with keyboards, drums, bass, and guitar.
Foosball and tennis tables were in opposite corners, providing plenty of game play room.
A workout area, complete with stereo and mirror, was against one wall.
For convenience, there was also another full bath.
While I chatted with Terrin, Keri had made a beeline for Iris, exclaiming, "Just look at you! You're glowing, Iris, pregnancy certainly agrees with you!"
Iris frowned and said, "Tell that to my stomach! I spent the first few days on the floor next to the commode!"
"Well, you'd never know it now. And that sounds like a pretty typical pregnancy. Are you and Terrin planning to have more children this way or the PlantSim way?"
Iris laughed and said, "Let's see how having one baby works before I commit to others!"
Keri couldn't resist doing all the expected grandmother-to-be actions.
Feeling the baby kick.
"Oh, that was a strong one! Future soccer player in there?"
Iris laughed and said, "Certainly feels like it, especially when I'm trying to sleep!"
Cooing over him or her, "Hi there, I'm your Gram. I can't wait to cuddle you and feed you and play blocks when you're bigger! See you soon, little one."
Even putting her head close to Iris's tummy and listening intently.
Giggling when all she heard was a loud hungry grumble!
Keri hugged Iris saying, "Well, mommy-to-be, you've been on your feet long enough. Let's get you inside and Scott can cook you some lunch."
At the mention of lunch, Iris's stomach rumbled again, and with a laugh she said, "Well, no use saying I'm not hungry! Ever since conception I've been starving, but Professor Dorsey says that's normal because the baby needs proper food, not PlantSim nutrients."
While Terrin gave Keri her tour of the house, I threw together my famous spaghetti with veggie sauce and Iris and I both dug in.
"This is terrific, Mr. Swanson! I don't cook much, but I'd love your recipe. I'll need something to impress my parents with when we get to Sunset Valley."
"To impress them or distract them, Iris?'
"Both. Even with a happy, healthy grandchild to coo over, I know my mother's going to give me that LOOK because I didn't discuss the whole pregnancy treatment process with them beforehand. Mom will be more understanding about it, being a mother herself, especially after I show her all the research that Professor Dorsey did with my added documentation. Then the scientist in her will take over and she'll be hooked, just like I was! And, even though this research will change the PlantSim world, my dad will still freak out thinking of all the things that COULD have gone wrong."
There was something in Iris's voice that had me asking, "Is there something you're NOT telling me?"
Iris's fork paused mid-way to her mouth, and gulped before she confessed, "The treatment process, conception, and birth have posed no problem for any of the couples to have a human child, but adding Forbidden Fruit DNA to truly make them a PlantSim has had…mixed results."
"Harmful results for the children!?!"
"Not harmful! Just…unpredictable. But it's a slim chance for that…"
"How slim?"
"About 25%. But that's because the test group is so small! Only four children had PlantSim DNA added and three of them never had any issues with it."
"And the fourth one? Is that child okay!?!"
"Bane is perfectly fine. He just loses his PlantSim genetics from time to time and reverts to being completely human. A fascinating case actually…"
"Iris! Sometimes, I think you can be a little too smart for your own good. We're not talking about case studies, this is your own child, my grandchild! His or her life is more important than any research!"
Iris blew out a small breath, "Professor Dorsey said the same thing and so did Terrin. I'll be careful, I promise."
We've been visited for the first time by Grandpa Nolan's ghost, so I'll be making ambrosia to entice him, Grandma Summer, and Grandma Rielle, to join us back here on the farm.
And Terrin and Iris have astounded us all by secretly getting married as Iris is expecting their child!
A PlantSim having a natural child! It boggles my very unscientific mind.
Leave it to Iris to find a way!
Technically, it was Professor Dorsey's treatment, but, knowing Iris, I'm sure she's added her own brilliant touch.
I just hope she doesn't go too far.
On a positive note, any day now, Terrin and Iris will be parents and Keri and I will be grandparents!!!
