Adding mp3 files to Sims 3 is fairly easy. Basically copy the music files to:
C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Custom Music

To fix the audio is more complicated and technical. If I remember correctly, the mp3 files have to have a bit rate of 128kbps. You might be able to fix the audio with Windows Media Player.

If that's something you're interested in, you might want to do a web search on that to get instructions.

If not, just copy over what you have that plays well already. :)

thank you!  I was wondering if the sound  in the options menu in game sims 3 (if any of the boxes ought to be checked or unchecked. or if the sound should be on 5 or 2? I hope you know what I am talking about. I don't have any box checked. was wondering if checking will make a difference. thanks again!

I don't think it matters. I don't have any checked in my sound options. It's my understanding if you check any of those options it mutes that particular sound.

Here's a photo of my options: (Click image to see larger view)

I do have my speaker setup on 5.1 Channel Surround. It sounds better.

It might be something you'll want to play around with. Before you do, save a copy of your Option.ini file from the Sims 3 folder. - C:\Users\Username\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3.

I save a backup copy of this file outside of my Electronic Arts folder for safe keeping. It's already come in handy. As I was clearing out my game cache files a week or two ago, I deleted the Options file. *Blush*
