Why do my Sims turn into frogs and toads

I have two sims that are pursuing alchemy and have set up the alchemy station. However, on their first attempt one sim turned into a frog when trying to create the vial of bliss and the other turned into a toad. Is this typical or just a bad happenstance? It's quite discouraging.
