Wow, Mercy really rode off into the sunset with her happily ever after, didn't she?
Nice husband, eating for two, classy house, nice neighborhood!
Carla is such a pretty sim and so are Felicity and Harmony!
Sorry to hear about the career setback but I'm happy to hear that we get to meet Justice & Carla's children!
Good for them, finishing the challenge with their own kids!
I was surprised at few working days in the Comedian career, even right after branching. Phooey!
Regarding your earlier response to my comment, I also chose to play without clubs.
But I lifted the restriction on reward traits early, if I remember correctly. You've been doing great!
The fastest birth would be "Go to hospital" alone, but then you would have missed out on all the great screenshots in this update. ;D
Despite, all the mourning, the Murrays seem to have recovered their high spirits. Go Murrays!
Thanks for the info about the hospital births.  I've never tried sending a sim alone.   Justice was really funny at the hospital because he stayed in panic mode the whole time.  Usually, the dads panic once and then try to make a break for the vending machine or computers, but Justice must have been stuck on the panic interaction.

There are a lot of things I've learned about the different careers with this challenge, and one of them is that the Comedian career actually takes quite a long time to complete-- at least compared to other careers.  Strategically, I probably should have done it sooner.  But I'm actually happy with Plan B.   It will be nice to only have Murrays and their spouses lift the restrictions.   :)

I really need to play closer to my sims, because I've never seen that look before, and it's perfect.
Thank you for the tip about the frugal reward, I didn't thought of it.
So, only 4 more careers to go? I'll miss your Murray family. At least Carla carreer's setback allows for a bit more of them.
Haha!  Isn't that a good face Harmony is making?
The Murrays are getting very close, but we've still got a little more time left with them.   :)

Ordinary days

After my sons were born, I quit my job to be a stay-at-home dad.  It felt good to make that phone call.
5.3a quit job.jpg

Carla was at work when I got the boys’ birthday notices so we had to wait for makeovers.  I bet you are wondering about their hair color.  I was, too!
5.3b toddlers.jpg

Both boys were sad when they aged-up.  At first, I thought they might be hungry or tired, but it turns out they had ‘Loss in the Family’ moodlets.  It wasn’t until Carla came home from work that we figured out which family member they were grieving.  It was Carla’s father!  They never even met him!
5.3c dad comfort.jpg
Now, don’t get me wrong.  I certainly feel sympathy for my wife who just lost her father.  I remember what it was like to lose my own parents.  But why should our toddlers have to mourn someone they never knew?!

Anyway, the answer to the hair color question is—we got one of each!

Closer inspection of their moodlets revealed that the boys were also sad because the dollhouse had been smashed by one of our ghosts.  I fixed the dollhouse, Carla and I comforted the boys as much as we could, and then we put them to bed.  What a day!
5.3d bedtime.jpg

The next day was a Sunday, and we realized that everyone in the family had the day off from work and school.  To celebrate, we all traveled to the park in Willow Creek.

Of course, my siblings kept working on their skills even at the park.  Old habits, I guess.

Felicity brought her easel with her.  Chance brought along his guitar.
5.3e park skills.jpg

Loyal worked on his Charisma skill and his Friend of the World aspiration at the same time.
5.3f Loyal.jpg

Harmony made a new friend and played several games of chess.  You might think she was actually taking the day off (unlike the others).  However, I happen to know that her future job requires at least level 5 logic.
5.3g chess.jpg

As for me, I just kept an eye on the boys and manned the grill in case anyone got hungry.  It’s nice not having to work anymore.  Oh, and my great-great grandma Jasmin was there!  She came over and gave me a hug.
5.3h Jasmin.jpg

Noble and Freedom wore themselves out running around in the wide-open space of the park.  Those are two tuckered out little boys right there.
5.3i toddler sleep.jpg

On our way home from the park, we stopped by Mercy and Conrad’s for a brief visit.  I wanted to meet their twins and offer my condolences to Conrad after the loss of his father.

My nieces, Breanna and Heather, are both charmers.  They weren’t at all shy about coming out of the house and greeting me.  And they didn’t seem to be suffering from any sad moodlets despite living with the grandfather who recently passed away.
5.3j Justice nieces.jpg

Then, I went in to say hello to Mercy and Conrad.  They seem to be doing well.  No sadness at all that I could detect.
5.3k Mercy Conrad.jpg

The rest of the week was fairly routine.  Carla, Loyal, and Chance went to work.  Felicity and Harmony went to school.  I stayed home and helped my boys gain their toddler skills.
5.3l toddler skills.jpg

5.3m reading.jpg

Finally, at the end of the week, Felicity and Harmony celebrated their young adult birthday.  They stayed up late one night to blow out their candles.
5.3n YA cakes.jpg

Felicity joined the painter career.  Her work schedule began with two days off so all she could do initially was complete her work assignment.
5.3o painter.jpg

Harmony got a job as a writer.  She was able to begin work right away.
5.3p writer.jpg

The next day was Noble and Freedom’s child birthday.  Carla and I helped them blow out their candles.
5.3q toddler cakes.jpg

The boys had to wait for makeovers, of course, because there were people at work.  Noble didn’t require much, anyway, but Freedom was another story.
5.3r premakeover.jpg

And that’s where I’ll end this update.  Next time:  the boys start school and the working adults earn promotions!

Awwww, the boys' toddler days swept by quickly! They were so cute!
I hate when kids age up as toddlers-with-mourning-moodlets. So hard for them to learn skills when they're Very Sad.
Playalot shared months ago that Happy moodlets  from eating edible plants of different qualities do stack.
I love how you visited Mercy and discovered that the unfair distribution of Sadness.

Woooo, Felicity and Harmony entered adult careers then Noble and Freedom aged up, too!
Things are moving fast! Go Murrays!

Sad toddlers are the worst!  At least I'm on normal lifespan.  On short lifespan, a 2 day sad moodlet would have been half their toddlerhood.  Having them run around at the park helped, too.  They got some happy moodlets from that to counteract the mourning one.

That's interesting about the hospital births and the Ley Line lot trait.  When I was practicing for baby boomer, I had my mother go to the hospital for the first birth and it was a single.  The home births later were all twins (with the ley line) unless there wasn't room in the house.  But then again, the only triplet birth I've ever had was at the hospital.  Hmm...

The Final Stretch

Where I last left off, Noble and Freedom had just celebrated their child birthday.  After waiting for all the working adults to get home, Carla and I had just enough time to give the boys makeovers before helping them with their homework and sending them to bed.
5.4a homework.jpg

In the morning, I made sure to discuss cognitive focusing methods with them and provide mental relaxation tips before their first day of school.  Can’t have the boys slacking off!
5.4b breakfast.jpg

Noble is our fairer-skinned redhead and Freedom has darker skin and brown hair.  They both have green eyes.
5.4c school.jpg

In the afternoon, the boys brought their cousins home from school with them.  Breanna is on the left with the shorter hair, and Heather is on the right with the ponytail.
5.4d cousins.jpg

After a nice visit with their cousins, it was time for the boys to start on their aspirations.  Noble is active and naturally wishes to be a Rambunctious Scamp.
5.4e Noble.jpg

Freedom is creative and started with Artistic Prodigy.
5.4f Freedom.jpg

We soon settled into a nice routine of work, skilling, and school.  Nothing exciting happened for a while unless you count the fact that Felicity successfully prevented a vampire break-in.
5.4g vampire.jpg
Way to protect the family, sis!

And then, all of a sudden, the promotions started rolling in!  First, it was Loyal who maxed the Business Management career.
5.4h Loyal.jpg
We can now take days off and we don’t have to quit if we are late or miss a day.  We can retire or retake a lost job.  And we don’t necessarily have to work normal or work hard.

Later that same day, Chance brought home his final promotion in the Musician career.
5.4i Chance.jpg
We can now use stereos and radios.  We can cancel whims and switch aspirations.  And we may use interactions besides just “practice” with musical instruments.

We bought a boombox and had a little dance party by the pool.  Yeah, I know we’re terrible dancers.  But remember, we’ve never done this before!
5.4j dancing.jpg

Last, but certainly not least, my darling Carla earned her last promotion the following day.  She came home a little tense, but only because she worked so hard.
5.4k Carla.jpg
We can now use mirrors, move in more than one sim per generation, and throw parties and go on dates.

We added mirrors in all the bathrooms, and I bought a full-length mirror for Carla.
5.4l mirror.jpg

Then, I asked my beautiful wife out on a date.  Since Carla is a foodie, I took her to Chez Llama for dinner.
5.4m date.jpg

The menu was a little confusing, but Carla explained it to me.
5.4n menu.jpg

I’m not exactly sure what I ate, but it was good.  We had a great night.
5.4o meal.jpg

Now that we can switch aspirations, the boys were able to complete a second (and then third) aspiration.  They have now both finished Rambunctious Scamp, Whiz Kid, and Artistic Prodigy.  I’ll leave it up to them whether they want to do Social Butterfly.
5.4p Freedom.jpg

5.4q Noble.jpg

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the progress my sisters have made in their careers.  They have both been making rapid progress lately.

Felicity is now a level 8 professional painter.
5.4r Felicity.jpg

And Harmony is a level 9 best-selling author.  I failed to get a picture of her coming home from work, but I did get this one of her mailing in a manuscript to complete the best-selling author aspiration.
5.4s Harmony.jpg

As for yours truly, I unwillingly celebrated my elder birthday.  No need for cake when you are trying to make every second count.
5.4t elder.jpg
With any luck, we can clear the remaining four restrictions before I get my final notice from Grim.

Note:  I never realized just how long it takes to max the comedian career!  Carla became a YA two & a half weeks before Loyal and Chance and yet they reached the top of their careers a day ahead of her.  Two and a half weeks!  It's true that Carla got hit with the sad moodlets worse than Loyal and Chance during the Week of Sadness.  However, I'd say that Comedian easily takes two weeks longer to max than other careers, all else being equal.

Wow, the Murrays are amazing!
First of all, I love the shot of Noble and Freedom leaving for school with their same-hair and identical smiles. So cute!
Three out of the remaining 7 careers completed, with Harmony and Felicity due to finish within the week!
I just realized that Noble and Freedom might be doing teen careers?

How fitting that Justice would invite Carla on a date to Chez Llama to celebrate her finishing her Comedian career.
Is the household enjoying all of its new-found freedom to enjoy themselves?
The Murrays are, indeed, in their home stretch!

P.S. Thank you so much for confirming my concern about the Comedian career. Now I can stop wondering whether kicking my initial Sharebear Comedian was a good decision. :D
Gah, Comedian takes 2 weeks longer than other careers!?
In hindsight, I should have had a Sharebear join Comedian while I had my Public Relations vamp and his Represent trick in the house.
As for multiple births, the first time any of my sims had triplets was Liberty Lee in my Ten-Gen Dynasty Challenge this year.
For me, it was the worst possible scenario for my fledgling dynasty, lol.
I have no idea how the game decides on triplets--it seems completely random and, possibly, only marginally influenced by the On Ley Line lot trait.

Carla was struggling through the Comedian career at the same time you had Purin doing that career in your Sharebear legacy.  I never realized how long it takes compared to other careers!  Carla definitely deserved her night out at Chez Llama.  And Justice knows that happy wife = happy life.   ;)

Thanks for cheering the Murrays on through this whole thing.  They are soooooo close!

Crossing the finish line

In my last report, three more restrictions had just been lifted, Felicity and Harmony were near the top of their careers, and Noble and Freedom were still just kids.

Permit me to skip ahead now to Noble and Freedom’s teen birthday because that event marks the beginning of the end, so to speak.
5.5a teens.jpg

They are both handsome boys, I’m told.  Noble is an active music-lover while Freedom is a creative art-lover.
5.5b Noble Freedom.jpg

Felicity wasted no time painting their portraits for the family gallery.  More on that later.
5.5c portraits.jpg

Since they celebrated their birthday early in the morning, the boys did not have to go to school that day.  Carla and I had them do their homework anyway because that’s the kind of parents we are.
5.5d homework.jpg

Then, they each got teen jobs.  Freedom joined the barista career and Noble joined the fast food career.
5.5e teen jobs.jpg

And that’s when everything seemed to happen all at once.

First, Harmony reached the top of the author career.  She came home in the strangest outfit which she said was some kind of practical joke at the office.
5.5f Harmony.jpg
Who cares what she’s wearing?  Her promotion allows us to buy books, visit the library, and place bookcases on existing lots.

The following day marked the official end of our challenge.  That’s because Freedom, Noble, and Felicity all brought home their final promotions.

Freedom, with his early morning hours, was first.  His promotion to Latte Artiste allows us to drink coffee and tea and to use the lump of clay.
5.5g Freedom.jpg

Next, Felicity brought home her promotion to Master of the Real.
5.5h Felicity.jpg
Now we can paint mood aura paintings, craft emotional workbench items, and write emotional books.

Finally, Noble maxed the teen fast food career.  We can now have quick meals, pizza, and chips from the bar.
5.5i Noble.jpg

And just like that, we’re done.  Six generations, twenty five careers, and the dedication of an entire family to a single cause.
5.5j gallery.jpg
As I hung the boys’ portraits in the family gallery and stood back to look at all the smiling faces, I was overwhelmed by the scope of it all.  Each of us a piece in the puzzle.  Each of us doing our part.  And now it’s over.  We can do anything we want without restriction.  The question is…what do we want to do?

Well, our long-term plans are still undecided, but the first thing we are going to do is go on vacation!  We’ve worked really hard and we deserve it!
5.5k Granite Falls.jpg

5.5l Selvadorada.jpg

Watcher's note: I realize this is a short update, but there really wasn’t much to cover.  I’ll have one more post to wrap things up and give my final thoughts on the Apocalypse Challenge, but the Murrays are officially done!

That’s a Wrap!

Justice:  When my boys were just babies, I started contemplating what life would be like when this whole challenge was over.  What would it be like to have unlimited freedom?  Would we find ways to push ourselves to achieve new goals, or would we get bored and lazy?

Before we were even officially done, my brothers and I started working on a new plan.
5.6a the plan.jpg

It took a while, but eventually we gathered all the ingredients we needed.
5.6b ingredients.jpg

We couldn’t carry out our plan until all of the restrictions had been lifted, of course.
Once we were free, I talked the plan over with my ancestors.
Then, Carla stepped up to help with her max cooking and gourmet cooking skills.
5.6c ghost and ambrosia.jpg

And one by one, we brought them back.
5.6e eating.jpg

We bought a wishing well and that helped, too.
5.6f Faith.jpg

It took some time, but eventually we got them all.  And now our town is full of Murrays!
5.6g Victorian .jpg
5.6h Modern.jpg

It’s impossible to gather everyone all in one place these days, but here are some pictures of various family members enjoying our new park.  As you can see, there is not one single elder among us because…no restrictions!
5.6i park1.jpg
5.6j park2.jpg

And that’s all I’ve got.  Thanks for sharing this journey with us!

Watcher’s thoughts on the Apocalypse Challenge:

Compared to others who have done this challenge, it took me a lot more sim-days to complete.  Looking back, I can identify several reasons for that.
•   One, I stubbornly insisted on having Liam wait until he cleared the Oracle career before letting him get married and have kids.  I did this for storytelling purposes because I wanted to tie back into my previous Wonder Child challenge.  All told, I think this cost me about 20 days.  In other words, if Liam had found a wife and had kids right away, the second generation and all subsequent generations would have been born about 20 days sooner.
•   Second, I started my challenge after the toddler patch.  Many of the other completed AC stories I have read were written before toddlers.  Crazy, isn’t it?  I had five generations of toddlers (founding couple excluded) so that’s 7 days x 5 generations for a total of 35 days.
•   Similarly, the young adult and adult lifespans were extended by 4 days each.  This meant that it took a little longer for space to become available in the house, at least until Diamond Secret Agent was cleared.
•   Finally, I didn’t start the Comedian career until the fifth generation.  Had I cleared it sooner, I would not have needed a sixth generation.

All of this leads me to the conclusion that the fastest way to finish the AC would be to have The Oracle, Diamond Secret Agent, and Comedian be the first three careers completed.  That would allow you to move in any sim from the gallery (with any traits and skills), move out sims who had maxed a career, and move in more than one per generation.  I’m not sure it would be the most fun way to play, but it would be fast.  Overall, I don’t regret any of the decisions I made because I prioritized the story over efficiency.  One thing I like about this challenge is how everyone approaches it differently.

The best thing about the AC, in my opinion, is that it flows so naturally from the Wonder Child Challenge.  I also really enjoyed all the strategizing that was involved and the fact that it’s shorter than your typical legacy/dynasty challenge.

The only thing that I didn’t like was the singular focus on careers.  Toward the end, I found myself getting a little bored because my sims had no goals other than completing a career.

I’ll probably never do another AC because there are so many other great challenges I want to try, but I’m glad I did it.  It was a nice “medium-sized” challenge, and writing the story helped me figure out a lot about the sims and posting on the forum.  😊  I’ll never forget my Murrays or the sweater boys.  Thanks for reading!

More applause for a job well done!
I heartily agree that the Apocalypse Challenge deeply reflects the simmer's own personality, what they enjoy about simming and what they prioritize.
I'd started my Wonder Child/Apocalypse sequence not long after an Immortal Dynasty Challenge, so I was dead set on keeping older sims alive--that was one priority.
I also moved up Oracle because I wanted to move in the challenge sim I created from my 2016 Kleptomaniac tournament challenge. So, no wonder child but, boy, was he cute! lol

One thing I really enjoyed was how we come to appreciate the little things we take for granted---like showers or the consequences of tardiness!!!
I wish we had more two-step challenges, where one grows fluidly into another.
And I'm glad you didn't do a speed run--it was so entertaining to meet all the Murrays (and the sweater boys)!

I agree that more two-step challenges would be fun.  As much as I love starting from nothing, I'd also like to have something for my multi-talented sims to do!

I read your Sanada AC, and it was a big inspiration prior to starting my story.  I purposely didn't look too hard at your list of career unlocks (or anyone else's) because, like you said, it's such a personal choice.  When you first look at the list of all those restrictions everything seems like a priority, and sorting through it all is half the fun.

And the sweater boys-- my original plan was to "adopt" two of them off the street after Carla maxed comedian and have them complete the last two teen careers.  Unfortunately, comedian took forever and I ended up with only one sweater boy in the last generation of childhood friends.  I'm happy enough with Plan B 'cause Noble and Freedom turned out cute, but now you know what Plan A was.   ;)
