I know it's supposed to be about the wonder child, but can we just take a moment to enjoy what a dapper elder Joe has become?
Liam and Leo playing toys was a nice moment of the wonder child simply being a kid and I really enjoyed that.  I think we sometimes get too caught up in the goals of challenges/legacies/dynasties so it's important that we take those moments to let the Sims be interesting people too.  Good call there, Watcher  ;=)
I had the exact same reaction when Joe became an elder!  I would have given him gray hair from the beginning if I had known how well it would suit him.

Thanks for the nice comments!  More family time and Liam just being a kid in this next update.

Nice job getting that A grade in just two days, Liam!
I, too, like Joe's senior wardrobe. He looks quite distinguished and very different from the Joe who frequently pops up in my CAS menu!

Liam, his family, and their Watcher are doing great!
Thanks!  Joe turned out to be a Sim who looks best as an elder, I think.  I couldn't leave him in the t-shirt, and the sweater combo looked perfect to me.

Thanks!  I've finished the challenge so I just have to edit pictures and get it posted.

How many cakes do we need?

In typical Wonder Child fashion, Liam has been breezing through his childhood aspirations and maxing out skills.  The final childhood aspiration he needs to complete is Social Butterfly.

Luckily, Liam’s got a newly aged-up brother to be his BFF so that task is easy.
6a BFF.jpg

Next, Liam visits his neighbors, the Friendlys.  Conveniently, their household consists of 3 adults and 5 children.  True to their name, the Friendlys welcome Liam into their home.

Soon, Liam is entertaining a crowd with an outrageous story.
6b social.jpg

Liam maxes out all of his childhood skills and completes all of his childhood aspirations with 5 days left until his teen birthday.  Fortunately, there are some adult skills that he can now get a head start on.

In the social category, there’s charisma and mischief.  And in the creative category, there’s piano and violin.
6c skills.jpg

Finally, in the mental category, there’s logic, video gaming, and fishing.
6d more skills.jpg

Our little prodigy may be building adult-level skills now but he’s still a child.  Jenna paints Liam’s portrait again to capture this stage of his life.
6e child portrait.jpg

Before we continue Liam’s story, let’s take a moment to catch up with the other members of the Murray household.

Our Matriarch, Jenna, has maxed both her painting and cooking skills and she’s reached level 7 in her career.  She still enjoys gardening and playing the violin, and she’s recently started writing children’s books.
6f Jenna types.jpg

Joe has turned out to be quite the family man.  He is a great husband and father.  Joe has high levels of programming, video gaming, cooking, and handiness skills.

He has reached level 6 of his career, but he’s thinking about retiring soon.
6g Joe and Liam.jpg

Leo, the younger brother, is a little ray of sunshine.  He might not get a lot of attention in this story, but he’s a cheerful kid and a wonderful addition to the household.
6h Leo hugs.jpg

Since Liam has earned his “A” in school, all he needs to do now is not let those grades slip.  He doesn’t actually have to go to school as long as his performance bar doesn’t drop too much.  In order to accomplish this, Liam alternates between taking vacation days and having his mom write excuse notes for him.  One morning while he is home alone, his friend Kacie calls and asks if Liam wants to play hookie.  Liam is pretty much already playing hookie so he accepts the invitation and is whisked off to the Blue Velvet Lounge.  Hmm…not exactly the most child-friendly location, but Liam makes the best of it.  While his friend Kacie takes a seat at the bar (!), Liam sits down at the piano and begins to wow the crowd.  He gains a little bit of skill and earns $84 in tips before the Watcher decides that’s enough goofing off and sends him home early.
6i piano hookie.jpg

The very next day, another one of Liam’s friends asks him to play hookie.  This time the kids meet at the Bluffs.  Again…there’s not much for a child to do here.  Liam does a nice cannonball into the natural pool, and the two friends swim and splash around a little while.  He doesn’t stay long, though, because he’s got more important things to do at home.
6j cannonball.jpg

Soon, it’s Jenna’s elder birthday!  Joe bakes the cake, Leo throws confetti, and Liam sings his best rendition of the birthday song.
6k Jenna cake.jpg

Jenna is not exactly thrilled about her gray hair, but Joe tells her that she looks great.
6l Jenna elder.jpg

After enjoying some cake, the family heads to the park to continue Jenna’s birthday celebration.  This time, they choose Myshuno Meadows in the city.  Liam and Leo have never seen grass so green nor a park so big.  Joe and Liam decide to go fishing first, while Jenna and Leo choose to order a late lunch from one of the food vendors.
6m fishing.jpg
6n food stalls.jpg

Later, the brothers watch clouds together while their parents enjoy a quiet moment in the gazebo.  Since they have grown up in Oasis Springs, Liam and Leo haven’t ever laid in the soft, cool grass before.  It’s a novel experience for them.  Somehow, they don’t seem to notice the huge pigeon walking around next to them.
6o clouds.jpg
6p parents.jpg

The next day is Liam’s teen birthday.  Since the Wonder Child’s birthdays are a Big Deal, the whole family takes the day off from work/school.  Jenna bakes two cakes ahead of time and puts them in her inventory.  The family then travels to a community lot that’s been modified for the sole purpose of hosting birthday parties.  As luck would have it, Jenna takes a piece from both cakes before the party starts so Joe gets put on emergency cake duty instead.

And then this happens:
6q Liam teen party.jpg

Note: Somehow, I only took one picture during the entire birthday party.  I was worried about earning the gold medal since Joe had to bake a third cake, and then Liam aged-up with this very unfortunate haircut and I completely forgot about taking screenshots.  Sorry about that.  The party did earn a gold medal (barely) and Liam received a makeover straight away.

Congrats to Liam on breezing through his aspirations.
Shame on you, Jenna! Wow, you had to take a piece of BOTH birthday cakes? (I hate when my sims do that!)
I'm impressed that you seem to be playing this challenge without any mentoring so far!

Happy birthday, Liam!

Happy Birthday, Liam! He was such an adorable child. I'm excited to see what he looks like as a teen.
Congrats on the gold medal, despite the cake sabotage! Sims are just not to be trusted around cake!
I love this sweet family. The playing hooky days were hilarious. Nice work on the $84 in tips!

Ooooo, wondering if he's going to keep rocking that Mohawk?  Not just anyone can pull off that look, but the wonder child?  No problems  ;=)

Happy birthday, Liam!
I don't even know how Jenna had time to take a piece from both cakes.  I never saw her eat either one.  ::)

Jenna and Joe did a little mentoring- in painting and logic, respectively- but I was still learning and didn't use it to full advantage.  I also hadn't yet discovered the power of using a family club, so Liam did a lot of things the hard way.

Happy Birthday, Liam! He was such an adorable child. I'm excited to see what he looks like as a teen.

Thanks! When I played this challenge I wasn't sure if I'd write it up or not.  It's funny now to look back at the notes I took.  "Hookie with Kacie. Blue Velvet. $84 in tips" was one of them.   :)

Thanks for the congrats!  I was sweatin' it on that party.  At least I know my Sims aren't the only ones who can't resist the cake.

You know, I keep telling myself that someday I need to have a Sim who actually uses the Mohawk hair.  I wasn't brave enough to do it with Liam, though.  ;)

Just an Average Teen

To make up for the cake fiasco, Jenna paints another portrait of the birthday boy.  It’s another masterpiece.
7a teen portrait.jpg

Now, we have a nice set of Liam as a toddler, child, and teen.
7b portraits.jpg

Once again, Liam’s birthday falls on a Friday so he cannot start high school until Monday.  However, Liam can get started in a teen career.  Since it’s the weekend, Liam chooses the Manual Labor career because it works both Saturday and Sunday.  After one day on the job, Liam receives a promotion.  The next day, Liam is promoted again thereby topping out the Manual Labor career with 11 days until his young adult birthday.
7c teen job.jpg
Way to go Liam!  That’s 11 more points and another box checked.

Leo’s birthday notice arrives Sunday afternoon.  Liam needs to improve his cooking skill so he makes his younger brother’s birthday cake.
7d Liam cake.jpg

While the cake is in the oven, I realize that the notice said that it was almost Leo’s birthday, not that it is Leo’s birthday.  Oh well.  This isn’t a Legacy and there’s no penalty for aging-up early so let’s just go ahead and celebrate Leo’s birthday now.

You don’t mind having your birthday a little early, do you, Leo?
Leo:  Let’s get this party started!
7e Leo candles.jpg

Ah-ha!  Now we see why Leo was so eager to become a teenager.  He couldn’t wait to sign up for Simbook and Simstagram accounts.

7f Leo phone.jpg

Liam is happy that his brother has joined him in adolescence.
7g props.jpg
Liam:  Now that you’re a teen, I can give you props, bro!

On Monday morning, the brothers attend their first day of high school.  Liam studies hard and manages to come home as an “A” student after only one day!
Unfortunately, completing all of his high-school coursework in a single day has put Liam in a tense mood.  I can’t imagine why!
7h high school.jpg
Leo:  Duuuude.  What’s wrong?  And why did you come home in your work uniform?

Meanwhile, Joe’s final notice has arrived.  His age-bar is bubbling.  I give him free reign to spend his last day doing whatever he wants.
He chooses to play video games and practice the piano.
7i Joe games.jpg
7j Joe piano.jpg

Note: Because I was curious, I kept track of the number of days between Joe’s elder birthday and his death.  10 days after his last birthday, his age bar started bubbling and the game gave his final notice.  Exactly 24 hours after that, the Grim Reaper appeared.  Therefore, without the Active trait, and without completing the bodybuilder aspiration, Joe lived 11 days following his elder birthday.  Well, that is, he would have lived for 11 days after his birthday, except Jenna successfully pleaded for his life.
7k Jenna pleads.jpg
7l Joe back.jpg

Jenna’s impassioned pleas gain Joe some precious extra time.  Jenna has a lot of vacation time saved up so she takes a day off to spend it with Joe.
Liam does not need to go to school anymore so he is home as well.

7n chess.jpg
I have no idea why Liam is wearing his work clothes.  He keeps spontaneously changing into them, and it’s driving me crazy.

Haha, Jenna compensates for eating both cakes with a masterpiece portrait.
How nice to have captured Liam at all three stages of his growth!
Congrats to Liam on completing a career and on his A grade!

That picture of Joe playing a multi-player game by himself was sad.
So glad Jenna was successful in extending his life a little longer!

Liam is so handsome! I love the portraits. Such a nice idea.
I cracked up about your notes to yourself! Lucky you're able to interpret them. I feel like I write notes to myself like that all the time and I never have any idea what I was trying to remember. :)
Really nice work on maxing the job early and getting the A grade, too!
I'm particularly glad Joe got a little bit of extra time. Way to go on the pleading, Jenna!
