Your clinic is looking really great! I love all the different shades and patterns of blue.
I'm so jealous that you even have the high-quality exam tables and the robo-vacuum thingy!

Balerion the Dread, huh? I'm not even going to ask if you named your kitty yourself! lol

Great progress, Watcher!

Oh heavens!  The treats are making pets sick?  Alysanne is either an evil genius or extremely unfortunate!
No worries about her roaming the neighborhood in her PJ's, she looks darned good in them!
May I inquire what rating your clinic is at right now?

It waivers between a 3 and a 4. The roomba helps, but I'm having a hard time getting the knack of managing the employees so they actually do stuff.

I'm a big ASOIAF fan. The high-quality exam tables are a recent acquisition as is the roomba, which honestly was probably the wisest purchase I could have my sim make.

Supriya looks very uncomfortable. “I thought you knew.”

“Of course I didn’t know!”

“Look, it’s no big deal.”

“Doc was barfing up all over the clinic. I beg to differ.” In a hushed voice she points to Cory Schultz’s dog, Dutchess. “Look at her! He bought Swampwater Taffy too. If he finds out I could lose my license!”

Supriya sighs. “Okay, the Swampwater Taffy and the Stinkinator and a couple of the others are not good, but they’re not all bad. Besides it’s like catnip or madnip. Most everyone knows it’s not great for the cat, but they’ll still give it to their pet.”

“You’re telling me everyone knows that if they give their pet the Cooler than Liquid Nitrogen Nutrition Bar they run the risk of that animal getting a killer case of Slurry Fur?”

“It’s complicated.”

Alysanne thinks about all the work she’s put into her house, the time she’s had to spend away from Summer and Balerion, and all her dreams. “I love animals and all this time I was making money off stuff that was hurting them.”

“Look, we’ll talk about it after work. It’ll be fine.”

Alysanne can see Mr. Schultz getting testier at having to wait. For some strange reason, he insists on bringing Dutchess to her instead of Brindleton Pawspital. “Tell me this much. Which of the treats are not causing the animals pain?”

“Age up, Age down, Ambrosia, Wellness. There’s controversy about the poop randomizer.”

Alysanne comes to a decision. “For now, only wellness treats, okay? And we are definitely talking about this when the day’s done.”

Mr. Schultz is a jerk as always although Alysanne does note that he seems to love his dog. “You’re good with her,” he admits grudgingly.

All her new good feeling toward him vanishes when he gives her a 2 star review.

It’s an awful day, though. Every animal that walks in seems to be vomiting uncontrollably and even with the Roomba, Alysanne and Supriya cannot keep up with the cleaning as well as the animals.

“You charge way too much,” one woman says. “This place is always filthy too.”

She's not wrong, but all Alysanne can do is offer a discount and promise that changes are in the offing.

They’re bone tired at the end of the shift, but true to her word, Supriya stays and explains everything.

It turns out to be less dire than Alysanne feared. The treats can induce mild cases only. Supriya makes a good case for the others. “All right,” Alysanne says slowly at the end of the discussion. “We are going to restrict ourselves to the ones we were making today. I want an informational poster up on the risks on the other stuff. I don’t care if Brindleton Pawspital is making bank on Swampwater Taffy. This is not why I became a vet.”

“There’s something else,” Supriya says.

“What?”

“I think you need to start taking care of yourself.” She gestures to Alysanne who has changed out of her scrubs. “You’re a stick. You need to start eating better. You’re working all the time. It’s not good for you and it’s not good for your animals. Take the next few days off. And at least one of those days—you need to take some time just for you!”

Alysanne decides her friend is right. Changes need to be made.

Oooo, an ethical conundrum and concern for physical health.  Quite a bit packed into one update!
Glad to see the challenge is still going so well!  Nice work.
Looking forward to seeing Alysanne and the clinic getting healthier  ;=)

Taking advantage of a holiday weekend, Alysanne decides her friend is right. She has run herself ragged. She has to recharge or she’ll be no good to anyone. After seeing to Summer and Balerion’s needs, which isn’t easy—Balerion seems uncharacteristically tired and cranky—she naps on the sofa and then decides day one of her 3-day weekend will be her day.

The lighthouse is everything everyone says it is with glorious views for miles. The whole island is stunning actually. Alysanne takes a look at the museum and then decides to explore. It’s so restful just having the time to herself that she walks and walks until she ends up in the pet cemetery.

It should be creepy, but it’s not. Not really.  Like everywhere else in Brindleton Bay, strays make their way through. Alysanne makes friends with a beautiful white Persian cat and then tired from her explorations, takes a nap.

There’s fog settling in the area when she wakes up and she’s startled to see what she realizes is the ghost of a long day cat approaching her. For the first time, she feels uneasy, but as the cat mews at her, Alysanne realizes the poor thing is just lonely. She approaches the ghost cat and gains her trust. Another kitty emerges from the shadows and soon Alysanne is petting and playing with both of them.

By the time she gets home, it’s beyond late. Balerion is off in the bushes somewhere and only returns to the house when Alysanne calls her. “What’s the matter, baby?” Alysanne asks, but just receives a baleful glance in return.

Tomorrow, she’ll spend the day with both Summer and Balerion, Alysanne decides. A little quality one-on-one time with each is what they need.

The day starts out great. Summer is happy to visit the dog park with her excitedly barking and doing tricks.

Alysanne even meets some of her customers and a few of their friends. Being social is hard for her. She’s spent so much time alone, but the more she chats, the more relaxed she gets. Supriya was totally right. Her work-life balance has been terrible and she needs to schedule some more downtime like this.

But when she gets back to the house and prepares to take Balerion with her, Alysanne is worried. It’s okay, Alysanne tells herself. The cat will perk up once they hit the beach.

But all hopes of anything good happening with her second half of her day off fade when coming down the boardwalk Alysanne spots her former employee who swore she would get even, Sidney Egan!

Alysanne looks down at Balerion, who seems thoroughly miserable. She’s not sure she has it in her to deal with Sidney just now. Just walk straight ahead, she thinks. Don’t make eye contact.

“Hey. Yeah, you. Get back here.”

Reluctantly, Alysanne turns around. Sidney Egan, her former and largely useless employee, is glaring at her.

“I thought you’d like to know. I got a new job. A much better job.”

“That’s great, Sidney. I’m happy to hear that.”

“I’m working for Cory Schultz.”

Alysanne’s heart sinks. All she needs is her vindictive ex-employee working for the lawyer who’s determined to see she never gets her legacy. Despite this, she tries to be pleasant. “That’s great, Sidney. I’m so glad you found something that was a better fit.”

Sidney sneers at her. “I told you I’d get you.”

She finally leaves them. Balerion keeps mewling pitifully and Alysanne is forced to turn back. As soon as they get to the house, the cat races off into the brush. Alysanne searches for her, but Balerion won’t come out.

“A hot bath and an early night are what I need,” Alysanne determines.

But when she finds Summer vomiting, those thoughts vanish. She first takes Summer to her own clinic, but is horrified to realize that because she doesn’t have a surgery station, she can’t treat her own dog.

“I’m going to have to take you to Brindleton Pawspital.”

Brant has the grace to look sheepish. “Rosie got sick and you weren’t open. I tried calling, but you weren’t picking up.”

Alysanne nods. She thinks she’s doing a good job of keeping it all in. “I totally understand. Summer—that’s my beagle—she needs a procedure and I’m not really set up for—”

Brant stops her. “—We like going to your clinic. Most of us prefer to take our animals to you. You’ve got a great manner with them. You’ll get there.”

Alysanne swallows. She does take heart when Brant shares that Catarina is here for the treats that Alysanne won’t stock and learns that her other customer is actually a vet here.

“If you ever have a vacancy,” the vet murmurs. “I think I’d be happier at your place.”

Alysanne takes that in, and as Summer is treated, she takes stock of her surroundings. She has some money to work with and a lot of the stuff she’s seeing in the clinic isn’t that expensive. She can pay for some renovations and get her clinic at least looking a bit better. And maybe she can do some stuff to the house too.

When she gets home, Summer trots into the house.

“Balerion?” Alysanne calls.

There's mewing in response.

Alysanne follows the sounds to the back hallway and discovers just why Balerion has been so cranky!

Congrats on the new addition to the family!  Hopefully the new kitten becomes a great feather hunter and helps poor Alysanne improve her financial situation.

What a great twist that the useless Sidney ended up with Alysanne's trouble-making lawyer. Birds of a feather...

How awkward to have to visit the rival vet clinic!
Awwww, Balerion's little one is too cute!

“Sell her?” Alysanne repeats into her phone. Balerion hisses at that. Summer is totally freaked, and the newest addition to the family, an absolutely adorable dark brown kitten with two differently colored eyes, mews happily to her mother.

On the other end of the line, Supriya sounds exasperated. “You need the money too badly.”

“I can’t do that to Balerion.” Alysanne bends down to pet both Balerion and her kitten. Rhaenys is staying.”

“I give up.”

After her friend has hung up, Alysanne looks down at her family. “I haven’t.”

In the morning, Alysanne gathers all the stuff she and the pets have been collecting and sells it all. She also pulls out the regulations about her own animals being at her clinic and realizes that there’s no reason they can’t be with her when she’s closed the clinic and doing some treat crafting.

Balerion and Summer continue to help out with feathers and items.

Consequently Alysanne is able to do some improvements to the house and the treats help fund her improvements to the clinic. She hires another vet, Hassan, and then a few days later, Raina.

Supriya is thrilled with the extra help, but Alysanne isn’t sure she made the right call. For one thing, he disappears into the clinic bathroom a lot and she swears she can hear him cursing. And he also seems to have a bit of a crush on her, because he keeps showing up at her house.

Raina is a hard worker, even if she’s less skilled, but her job satisfaction is terrible. Alysanne pays for extra training for everyone and tells herself it’s why her profits aren’t great. She promotes Hassan and Raina several times, but it still doesn’t help with their attitudes. If anything, they become less productive and Hassan keeps getting weirder.

She sits down to send Cory Schultz her progress, she’s horrified to realize just how little the clinic is bringing in. Alysanne has 3 exam tables and a surgery station. She should be making a lot more than a thousand a day.

“I need another promotion,” Raina says.

“I wish I could promote you, but I can’t afford it.” It’s the middle of a really busy and messy shift and Alysanne wishes that her employees would wait till the end of the day to talk about this stuff.

“Then I quit.”

Hassan, who’s been raging from inside the bathroom all day long, follows suit.

“There are plenty of other people you can hire,” Supriya says when they’re finally done.

Alysanne shakes her head. “We’re going to try something different. I’m selling one of the exam tables. I’ll get a crafting machine for home so I can keep up with the treats. I’d rather have one skilled and well-paid vet working for me than have to worry about training and supervise two newbies. I keep hearing how much the other vet clinics are making. I need to make bank or I’ll lose everything.”

“The terms of the will—”

“—require a fully staffed vet clinic, yes, I know, but I only need that by the end. Right now I’m hemorrhaging money. We’re going to go it with just the two of us for now. When I’m done with everything else, I’ll hire 2 more vets.”

Hopefully, Hassan won't also get a job working for the nasty lawyer!
Another enjoyable update!  It's fun seeing how the vet clinic is coming along and having an enjoyable story on top of that is just the icing on the cake  :=)

What a string of bad luck Alysanne's suffered with her employee hires!

Is it possible to buy the observant trait then run around checking a dozen sims' traits first?
I've never tried that for hiring staff but three out of three bad seeds is alot. At least she has Supriya!

Good luck turning your clinic around, Alysanne!

That's a good idea. She's got the points for me to buy a bunch of traits so I'll look into that.

The weeks that follow are a blur for Alysanne. She does her best to maintain a healthy work-life balance taking time to take her pets out for outings and to enjoy the beauty of the community.

Rhaenys grows up in no time. Fortunately, she’s just as good at feather hunting as Balerion which helps with the funds for building the house. If the house at Tail’s End is not perfect, at least it’s now functional and has a roof and all.

Alysanne even tries to fit in some time for a social life. That’s a bit of a mixed bag. She finally accepts one of Catarina’s repeated invitations to hang out and is horrified at the conditions in which Catarina’s cats live.

Mindful of how far she has to go for amassing income before she can inherit the estate free and clear, Alysanne even takes up a new hobby—DJ’ing. The predictions for money are not high, but it’s fun and if nothing else, she’s able to max out her handiness skill making modifications to her DJ booth.

And then one night, even though she’s pretty beat, she accepts an invitation to go to a club in Windenburg. The DJ lets her take a stab at mixing and to her shock and delight she makes about a hundred simoleons in tips! Alysanne knows, though, it’s just going to be a fun hobby for her and not an income earner. The clinic is going to be her mainstay.

The house is coming along. She’s even able to afford a pool, which Summer absolutely adores. Alysanne loves it too. Pretty much every hour is packed, but she’s feeling fulfilled and healthy.

One day she gets a phone call. It’s Sidney Egan. “Can you come by?” Sidney asks, for once sounding like a real sim and not a cartoon villain. “I think we need to talk.”

“You want me to go all the way to—”

“—Willow Creek. I know it’s a lot to ask.”

“I’ve been in therapy,” Sidney says when Alysanne reluctantly journeys to Willow Creek to see her ex-employee. “I’m working through some things and I need to apologize to you.”

“Okay,” Alysanne says cautiously.

“You need to be prepared. Mr. Schultz is about to demand you give him a report on your progress. You won’t have very long to do it either and if things aren’t where the will’s timeline states they should be, you’re screwed.”

Alysanne takes a very deep breath. “I’ll be ready."
