Baby/Toddler left alone

I haven't played in a while, but the last time I played you couldn't leave the baby/toddler home alone.  This time it has happened twice.

No not normal. Even if your sim doesn't actively call a nanny before leaving the lot you normally get a pop up/notification telling you that one is on the way (I think) or giving you the option to hire one.

Could be a new bug but try deleting the localthumbcache.package file from your TheSims 4 folder and make sure you have tested in a new game with no mods or cc. If all goes well in a modless game then potentially it could be caused by an outdated/broken mod.

I do know that I had my sim leave, without even thinking about the toddler, what was I thinking, and I got a message that the toddler was at daycare. I had my sim go back home immediately and it was all good.

One tip I always recommend is repairing the game after a glitch or bug. It sometimes helps.

Ah, yes I think they do go to daycare if you do not hire a nanny. I literally was playing with a household with two toddlers last week and still can't remember!
