"Smells great Lucas!" I said from the couch.
"Thanks!"
Lily and I were watching our weekly movie on the couch while Lucas made mac and cheese.
"Where is Lily again?" Lucas asked.
"Science fair at school, she has a big project!" Lily answered.
"Ah okay, so make her a plate?"
"If you wouldn't mind." I told him.
"Of course."
"So, when you bake the cookies you want to spread them out enough to where they won't bake into each other." I told Lily.
"How long do you bake them for?"
"Depends on the cookie size, smaller cookies around eight minutes, large cookies around ten."
"Got it."
I suddenly got winded and tired.
"Mom?"
"You know, I'm kind of tired. Lucas would you mind making me a plate and put it in the fridge? I'm going to go lay down."
"But mom, the movie.."
"I'm sorry, we will finish it later sweetie."
"Oh, okay."
Lily's POV"She's getting weaker." I said.
"I know, but it's to be expected."
"I know that!" I snapped.
"Okay, I'm sorry."
"No, I'm sorry. I shouldn't of snapped." I said, my eyes filling up with tears.
"You're under a lot of stress right now, it's hard taking care of someone that's sick especially a parent."
I nodded.
"Come here."
He pulled me into his arms and I allowed myself to break for the first time since she told us the news.
...
Sabrina's POV"Lucas?"
"Yes?"
"Am I reading the signals wrong, or do you not have feelings for my daughter?"
He turned pink.
"There may be feelings, yes." He whispered getting uncomfortable and nervous.
"Take care of her."
"What?"
"I'm not going to be around much longer, so I need you to take care of my little girl for me."
"Of course I will."
I smiled and he rubbed my shoulder. I smiled and took a deep breath. It was getting more and more real that I was not going to be here very much longer. It was getting tougher to get out of bed each day and when I did my energy was drained quickly. I had more to teach them, things that they'd need to know growing up. But how do you know what they would need to know and when they'd need to know it? There was so many changes going on, not only in their life but the entire world. We were getting robbed of time, but that's what life gave us and we had to live with what had.
"She's stubborn you know, my daughter."
He laughed, "Yeah, I figured that out."
"You have to push to get through to her, she's strong and tough."
"She got that from you."
I smiled.
"I hope so." I said.
Lily's POV"She's on to us." I said.
"Oh yeah."
"I want to tell her, but we're still getting to know each other. We haven't even made it official yet."
"I know." Lucas said.
I looked at him.
"What are you thinking about?"
"How cute you are."
I blushed.
"You think I'm cute?"
"Of course I do."
He stood up holding something behind his back.
"What do you have?"
"Something for you."
He pulled out a single rose.
"What is this?"
"Your mom told me once that red roses are your favorite."
I smiled.
"They are."
"I hope one day we can become a couple, but for now I will enjoy getting to know everything about you Lily."
My heart took a leap as he pulled me into a hug.
...
I stood with my arms crossed by the patio door watching Aria and mom talk.
"I'm not ready." Aria said.
"I know." Mom told her.
"Do you think dad will be there, you know, waiting?"
"I would like to think so." She told her.
"Yeah."
"I can't wait to tell him all about the little girl he never got to meet." Mom said, brushing the hair from Aria's face.
I smiled.
"And about your sister. She's really something."
"She is." Aria said.
"Can I take these?" Lucas said.
He picked up their dishes for them.
"Thank you Lucas, I think I am going to go take a nap."
Mom kissed Aria's head and walked inside.
"So, you and Lily, eh?"
...
I was in the kitchen making lunch while mom was upstairs folding laundry. She had energy today so I thought it would be good for her to do things instead of just laying around the house. Lucas was in the backyard with Scruff and Aria was somewhere around the house. All of a sudden the fire alarms went off, but I was in the kitchen so where were they coming from?
"HELP!"
"Mom?!"
I dropped everything, Lucas and Aria both came running after me with Scruff in tow as we all ran upstairs. By the time we got there mom was standing in flames in front of the washer.
"MOM!"
"Quick! Go in the shower!" Lucas screamed.
Mom ran into the nearest bathroom while we tackled all the flames.
Thankfully we were able to stop the flames before they spread to the rest of the house. We got the room cleaned up and Lucas worked on getting the washer back up and running.
"Lucas I'm going to check on mom."
He nodded as I headed downstairs.
"Mom?"
I searched almost everywhere until she came out of the bathroom.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"Yeah, I- Um, yeah just a little winded." She said.
"Mom, maybe you should go sit down."
"No, really... I'm fine.."
She took some labored breaths and then all of a sudden hunched over.
"Mom?"
"I'm fine."
The next thing happened so fast, she took a final breath and then collapsed to her knees.
"MOM!" I screamed.
"LUCAS! ARIA! SOMEONE! HELP ME!"
I fell to my knees and shook her but she wasn't waking up. Lucas and Aria came running downstairs.
"What happened?!" Aria screamed.
"I don't know! She came from the shower and she was fine and then all of a sudden she was just- she just... she just fell and I can't wake her up!" I screamed.
"Mom! Mom please!" I begged.
I looked up at Lucas who was on the phone with the ambulance.
Later That NightLucas brought me a cup of tea. I faked a smile and took the cup.
"She took a shower and she was fine." I said, in shock.
"I know." He whispered.
"I was so angry. Angry that she was sick and that she was getting robbed of time. That we were getting robbed of time with her, and now it wasn't the sickness that killed her?! A freaking washer fire is what killed my mother!"
Lucas rubbed my back.
"I need to be alone, can you please go check on Aria and make sure she eats please?"
"Of course."
I was in total shock that I had just lost my mother. It wasn't the fire itself, but the stress from the fire caused her heart to give out. My mother was gone.
