University works for other families, not mine?!
« on: August 17, 2017, 08:36:53 PM »
This post is kind of long and I apologize if it doesn't make a lot of sense but I'll do my best.

I have a family I am trying to turn into a dynasty: a single mother, who has seven kids--three young adults (two males one female), one teen (female), one child (female), and two toddlers (female and male). I've raised them over the course of two weeks, putting in a lot of effort and figuring out how I wanted to play.

Basically, I've invested a lot of effort into this save. When the kids became young adults I have them get jobs and work on skills to get full scholarships to university, which they all now have--the girl for Fine Arts, one boy for Science, and the other boy for Technology. It was great.

Problem is, when I go to send them all to university, I get this weird screen. The happiness bar is blue, I have no simoleons (had like 40,000 back home), the Sim panels are non-existent, and I can't open the screen to see moodlets, needs, relationship panels, etc.

I thought the game was corrupted, went insane trying to fix it, still didn't work, then changed active families and tried switching back. The first time, the Sims panels showed the family I'd switched from even though I was playing a different family. When i tried again, everything was fine. i even sent one of the two girls to university, and boom! It worked fine, no problem. Yet everything I try to send the three young adults to university from my primary family, it won't work. I'm really annoyed but don't want to restart anything (they all have relationships with kids in town, and restarting that would be a pain. I'm playing a "no-testing-cheats" run and have fought for what these sims have).

Can someone help me? This is really irritating. And it doesn't affect any other visiting/vacation locations! Egypt, China, and France are fine, just not university, and only for the family i created.

Sounds like you've got what's know as the travel bug, it started with World Adventure, but it does affect going to/from University as well. See the post linked below for some tips that can help.

Tip: Travel Bug

Hi MrsFlynn! It's nice to see someone so prominent in this community coming to help me out. I checked out the link you provided, but it led me back to a similar "resolution" as the articles that claimed my file was corrupted. I already went back to the backup (previously, I'd sent the three adults to university, brought them back and saved, so this backup is from before that save) yet the issue remains. I'm against using mods personally, so are there any other ways to fix this travel bug? (at least there's something I can call it now...besides big pain.

I want to start by saying this has never happened to me, and I play no cheats, no mods, no CC. I made five generations of a family, all went to university at YA. At some points, it was the heir, their cousin and the cousin's spouse going.

You said that you could send one sibling (unless I read wrong) and it worked fine; have you tried individually sending each sibling, to see if it is one of them in particular causing the bug? Sometimes specific sims do get bugged, and there is very little you can do about it. Once you know which sibling it is, if it is one causing it, there is a way to reset that sim without cheating. Go into Edit Town, split the sim from the household (it won't break family connections or anything, just remove wishes), then merge them back in. If that sim still can't go to university, then there's nothing that can be done.

I was literally about to write in with an update about how sending one person at a time seems to work better, and then I saw your post, Nevermore!

I sent the mother of the house, and she wasn't bugged at all--I could play with her and everything. I'm going to keep doing what you suggested with the three young adult children, and then once things get figured out hopefully this thing gets resolved. Thanks!

You're welcome. Once it is figured out, you should be able to send more than just one if they're not bugged. I did that plenty, that one of the cousins, and one was founder father and his daughter.

One thought; did you move them into a dorm or a residential lot?

Typically I moved them into dorms, though I did try with a residence once. I've finished testing the siblings--it was the oldest son who was bugged out, the daughter and the younger son were both fine. I separated the oldest son from the rest of the family, moved him into a new house, then merged him back with the family, and am going to test him at university again (fingers crossed it works).

Does the dorm/residence thing make a difference? So far all the sims who successfully go to university have been moved into a dorm.

Sometimes dorms might cause a bit of an issue. Because the "roommates" even though they're not playable, they still count as part of the household. It doesn't show in game, but if you save and quit, then check the main menu, they appear as part of the household. Something in the game conflicts with the household in university, and your household back home. It doesn't always happen, but that can be the cause lagging, and sometimes bugs out a sim.

It is nothing worth stressing over though, nearly all my sims live in either dorms or sorority or fraternity houses, and luckily didn't get the bug.

Okay, well I moved the older son out, merged him back in, and sent him away--same results. Is there any way to fix a single sim that's bugged? I haven't tried moving him into a house, but I have the feeling it'll be the same thing... :(

Other than the split/merge reset, that's about it. There is another option, but you will lose relationships/friendships outside the household. Go back into Edit Town, save your household to the sims library. Create a new save, in either the same neighborhood, or a new one, placing the household in. It doesn't matter if you included their house, or copied just the family. Have the oldest son try going to university again to the dorms where the problem is, and see if that works.

It might have to be that the oldest son doesn't go to university. Even though he can't go, you could still get the benefits for him, by having him buy the Lifetime Reward "Honorary Degree." You will still get the career boost and everything for him, without going to university. All you really lose with him, is the time you might have had to gain skills and socialize without effecting his age.

That might be your only choice, if he still doesn't work moving into a house at university.
