Indeed. What if the power falls out, I was wondering myself that to.
Is the harddrive build up from several harddrives working together in a RAID mode, or several harddrives where one is used to be a backup from the other?
Is this password protected? Can nobody steel the pics? Can I make sure nobody else has access to my pics and can you guarantee me all this?

So, that are enough questions for now. :)

The server is not physically located at Carl's house.  It's the same server that hosts the Guide and Forum that he pays for monthly.  I'll have him come by this thread and explain about the safety of everyone's pictures.

Thank you Pam. That would be convenient, as I was missing that in the description on page 1.

I tried to follow the instructions exactly, but wound up with the same small pictures I always used to get with the in-house image service.  What did I do wrong?

Are you making sure you are clicking on the thumbnail first to bring up the bigger picture. If you copy from the thumbnail you end up with the small pictures.

That's what I did!  Thanks, Rachel.

Guys, while we're on the topic of image resizing, it's possible not to click on the picture, just the thumbnail, then after copying it to the page just remove the bit that says "thumb_" (no "), and you'll end up with a large picture! I actually find this easier ;)

Like Pam said, it's not at my house but at a 1and1 data center. The server does have raid, but it's software. I am making frequent backups of the database that holds all the information, and the pictures themselves. These are going on my drive, so the information will be secure in 2 locations. I can say for sure that we won't be moving for a very long time. As that gets bigger, it will grow harder and harder to upload all the information back to the server with my DSL.

The only way someone's going to steal the pics is to come to my house and get them off my hard drive. The only other way would be for them to right click and save them, one painstaking picture at a time. So, I don't think picture theft will be a big problem. But you can join me in being paranoid about that if you like -- there's nothing I can do to protect the images on the guide other than keep an eye on competition once in a while to see they aren't using them.

Na, I trust it actually now. Have you considered already to mark the pictures, or make an logo on it so if anyone would be that stupid and lazy to steal whatever they can you actually can sue them. I have put a logo on any video I have uploaded to Youtube. No stealing allowed.
Saying that, steeling from Youtube IS against the law, the Youtube law that is.

Maybe I'll get around to adding a disclaimer that the images are copyrighted to the guide as a deterrent. The only image on the guide I have watermarked is the Sunset Valley map. It took a lot of time and deserved it. Most other pictures could be replicated in some form or another.

Anyway, I'm glad I was able to ease your mind.

No problem. I personally do think that being a little paranoid can keep you on the internet out of trouble sometimes. It can be a good thing as long as you let it not become one of your traits.

Final question (I think): Will members and moderators be able to watermark their own pics to save the time for moderators to do that otherwise? If you choose for making that a moderator task I am willing on doing that once I know how to. It also depends of course on how many pics that are going to be. ;)

I would not put that task on mods. However, I'm sure if you use one of the many image editors you can do it yourself as you say. You watermarking them if that makes you feel comfortable doesn't bother me, so long as it's tasteful.

I have a quick question for Carl or anyone that can answer. How many pics can I have? I'm doing a Dynasty and I already have 170 pictures uploaded on the new app. Should I start using more words and less pictures?

Captioning them is a good idea, and one I really want to encourage -- after all, we're sure to have some folks just looking for some fun shots to look at. Keywords can even help people find shots with the search interface. After all, no browser or search engine knows what an images is unless we tell it so. It will help this project to be more affordable to eventually put a small ad at the bottom when we start getting referrals from image search engines.

Don't worry about disk space right now. We're only at 53mb. Use it, I'll see how it goes and make a call from there. I apologize for not being able to be firm in a number right now but it's hard to guess just how much space we're going to need over the next year. I'm recording where we stand and what the forum traffic volume is like at the time to watch as it progress. I can see myself getting a second cheaper server for my lower-demand sites some day, which will free up even more space for us here.

Right now we only have 53mb worth of space on there and can easily hold 1000 times more pictures than we have -- that doesn't mean go crazy, but no one has a number right now that even comes close to worrying me. Joria and Pam both have images that are in excess of 9mb total and that doesn't trigger any anxiety in me.

I'd say 500-1000 pictures per person is managable for quite a long time. Like I said in the first post, just keep them organized and if it does come time to do a little pruning you'd know what ones are on the forum, and the others that are just for show.

I'm a nice guy -- if you go over, we'll find some way to work out the problem. No worries!  :D

I can see a few more questions being asked on this issue. When they arise, I'll take the time to update the first post to make sure someone doesn't have to run through all of these pages to get my input about policy and how things could go in the future.

Ok, I'll head over and start adding captions and keywords!
