Travel Bug?
« on: November 08, 2016, 08:19:21 PM »
Not sure if this belongs here or in the Technical  section so sticking it here for now.

You know how when you travel with a Sim, the game will pause for just a moment before taking you to the travel loading screen? Well, when I selected my Sim to travel, I got stuck on that loading screen, I could see the loading icon spinning and the game clock ticking by and my Sim dropping actions into her queue but no travel happened. Another weird thing, when I pressed the < and > keys I could see a skill building bar move around, really weird glitch.  :o In the end, I was forced to close my game using the alt, ctrl and delete method because it wasn't responding to anything I did.

When I restarted the game from a previous save and traveled, it took longer than normal for the travel screen to load, at least a full minute.

My Sim lives in the Spire apartment, I think it's called, in San Myshuno, a three storey, two bedroom, three bathroom apartment, it's pretty big and I wonder if the size of the building is causing lag. I did select the Haunted lot trait the previous night then switched it to something else that morning so that may have been the cause?

I'm trying to figure this out, did my game crash? I wonder if other people have had problems with lag or similar issues in apartments? I remember how laggy and buggy Sims 3 apartments were in Bridgeport and am wondering if Sims 4 apartments are becoming the same, I hope not. :(

Is there anything I can do to help prevent this in the future? This could be a game breaker for me and I'm not happy about it, especially as my laptop should be able to handle the Sims 4 without rubbish like this and has been able to with no problems up until now so I'm pretty annoyed and concerned.  >:(

I'm not sure exactly what could be causing the lag in the game. It maybe (?) patch related. Regardless I've added 2 links. A general lag/freezing tips post and a compilation of bugs since latest patch thread.

Go through both of these and try the tips to see if they help. :)

@Rainbow Dash the developers over on the official EA sims forum are suggesting that people remove their tray folders as a temporary work around and keeping it safe and a back up maybe on your desktop or external hard-drive.

All sims/lots that are in your games from your library (tray folder) will be fine and if you want to add anymore it is as simple as putting your tray folder back in, downloading the sim you want into your game, saving it, exiting it and then removing your tray folder again.

I'm also having very long loading times but have refused to remove my tray folder as I feel it is a hassle I can do without! I haven't yet had a fail to travel although I get the notification that the game is not responding. If I wait long enough it (so far) has come right.

Also check that the update to Origin didn't change your game from 64bit to 32bit, or the other way around! Depending on your PC specs etc.

How I do all this?  ???

Where do I check this? Not finding it.  ???

This did happen right after the patch update. I should check on my Random legacy family to see if they are having troubles, there are more Sims in that family but their house is about a third of the size of that apartment. I might try making a game in a smaller apartment too, doing these things might tell me if the overly large, overly stuffed (I really pimped it out, lol) apartment is to blame.

I'll look at those links and see what I can do MrsFlynn

Thanks guys. :)

@Rainbow Dash - You were looking for this information?

*The patch has reportedly switched the game to 32 bit. You may have to manually change it back to 64 bit.

Go to Games Library in Origin . Right click on The Sims 4 picture.
Click on “Game Properties”. Click on Advanced Launch options.
Change the “When launching this Game” setting to “The Sims 4 32-bit”
Or change the “When launching this Game” setting to “The Sims 4 64-bit”

Thank you, Mrs. Flynn, that helped me a lot.  Didn't realize Origin would do that.

As for the tray thing, here is what Crinricht said:

Quote
My game freezes and lags since patch 1.24.102. Everything was ok before. The gallery and library are especially bad.
Cause

The problem seems to be caused by to many files in the tray folder. The size doesn't seem important. It's the number of files.

There could be other reasons but for most people it seems to be this.
Solution

Move the following folder to the desktop: documents\electronicarts\thesims4\tray until EA/Maxis can fix this issue.

Do not delete the folder. An new empty one will be recreated when you start the game.
What does the Tray folder do ?

The Tray folder contains all your Houses/Sims.. that show in your library. There's multiple files for each element.

If you move the folder, the things will no longer show in your library. Houses and Sims in your save game will not be affected and your gallery uploads also stay intact.

Once you move back the files, they will appear in your library again.

Sort of a nuisance but it did help.

Clearing caches and going offline did nothing in that game, I had the same thing happen again but this time the travel screen actually loaded after a full minute. (Real time). But the game clock was ticking away during that and I was upset to find I had lost two whole Sim hours during that time!  >:(

MrsFlynn, I tried what you said and my game was set on 32 bit, I had no idea if it was set to that to begin with but I switched it to 64 bit and my new game is running smoothly so thank for that tip, it really helped.  :)

Also, living in a much smaller apartment now which I think is helping too.

For the record, my Random Legacy file of five Sims in a much smaller house had no problems traveling.

Will only try the tray thing if it happens again and only as a last resort!

Thanks for all your help guys, as that could have been a real problem! :)

I have the almost the same problem. When I try to travel it loads then the crash error comes up. Tried to repair, turned off in-game, turned down some settings, Im in windows mode, removed the tray, cannot find because my origin isn't showing it (Go to Games Library in Origin . Right click on The Sims 4 picture. Click on “Game Properties”. Click on Advanced Launch options.
Change the “When launching this Game” setting to “The Sims 4 32-bit” Or change the “When launching this Game” setting to “The Sims 4 64-bit”). Not sure what else to do

Your Tray folder should be found using the path below:
C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4\Tray

Take that folder and move it to the desktop.

Does it give an actual error message? If it does, what is it?

In the meantime, here's some general tips to try:

@MrsFlynn
I've moved my Tray to my E drive for save keeping. I've also done a clean boot, defrag. I get a window saying: Sims 4 has Stopped Working. I do have a high in graph card (may not now since tech is so rapid). Did almost everything on that list. I did get as far as visting my neighbor cause i'm playing city life

If none of the tips in the posts below help, it may be worth posting about the issue at AnswersHQ. to see if they may be able to help further.

@XxMousiexX  I'm not sure that this will help at all, but I have been using this mod for a while, Simulation Lag Mod (click) because my game is just so stuttery and laggy. I haven't had problems with loading screens apart from a hugely long wait time. I have had crashes to the desktop though.

The mod is made by someone I chat on-line with so I know it is safe to use. It won't do anything to your game other than what it says it will do in the creators description. I normally play completely mod free but this was a performance issue that I just could not bare to have continue in my game. Many people on the Official Forums are complaining about poor performance at the moment too. Hopefully the devs can do something about this in the new year.

Give it a go, see if it stops the issues.
