How do I make romance bars appear?

I see all this talk online about romance bars, but there are none in my game, and there is no romantic speech tree at all.

Are you playing as a teen and talking to young adults? or vice versa? If you have a YA, Adult or Elder Sim, you should have the romance option on the left when talking to another YA or older. If you're playing as a teen, you'll only get that option when talking to another teen.

The romance bar is another bar that shows up underneath the friendship bar. Usually you have to have 3 or 4 romantic interactions with another Sim to get the bar, which will be pink.

hmm that could be it, I figured the other youths I had been talking to were teens but maybe not?

@Sevcat when your sim starts talking to other sims you can check their age in the info panel above their heads so you can tell if your sim is targeting the right age group.

I think that if you can interact with a Sim, you will have a "Romantic" category. If you have a "Romantic" category, but no pink bar, then choose some actions from the "Romantic" category. I think, it will take around three flirts, to get a bar to appear. Don't use the advanced ones too soon, or it may give you Negative Pinkery. A successful "Flirty Introduction", will also give automatic romantic rapport, with your target of affection. (TOA)
