I just got mine up to perfect and got the other planter. Just to check I started a new game and the planters where available there from the start. So once they're unlocked your good in other games also without having to do it again.

That's great news, @grimsoul ! Thanks for checking.  Oh wait, but after the challenge month, Jasmine won't be around to pass out growfruit. How would one get the planters if the seeds aren't available?
I hope all but a few growfruit trees disappear...

The planters' description suggest that plants grow faster when you use the planter. Does it seem that way to you?

Well, I only have the cute green planter so far (my trees are up to magnificent and getting better ever day!) And I do find that they grow slightly faster in the new pots as opposed to the old ones (I tested it out with one in the new pot and one in the big square planter). Plus, if you get the super fertilizer from Jasmine, it'll grow even faster and evolve quicker too! I found if you spam her for fertilizer, you can get 3 bags before the option greys out. And it "reloads" the next day, from what I can tell, so visit her once a day and eventually you'll have stacks of fertilizer (I'm only using it on my Growfruit at the moment so I can get this challenge over with, the eggs were easy as pi!). I don't know about a communal garden by Oakenstead, I always use that lot for my legacies and I've honestly never noticed it. Is it fenced and sign-posted like the one behind the BFF household?

Woohooing in a closet on a community lot can result in finding an egg too!

You can buy growfruit from the little cabin store in granite falls.  No fertiliser though :(

Thanks for the tips, I'll check the gardening guide and see what I can do/graft... I would really like to unlock the planters without cheating. lol

You can read it here from the beginning.

I have found, once I got my Grow Tree up to magnificent - it's taking an awfully long time to get to perfect. It's still not there yet and I've been playing a good few hours this morning. Still only pristine.... I have grafted to get a perfect one but think it's a bit odd.

Plus been fertilising as soon as I can.

In addition the super fertiliser doesn't seem that super to me. As my other plants are quite high already, they beat the fertiliser (in the list).

@Jase~  Granite Fall herbs are fastest (some have 18hr cycles). The next easiest would be regular herbs. I used four perfect fireleaf.

@Magpie2012  Oooh, thanks for doing the comparative testing with the planter! I'm doing a challenge now but I caved and started growing growfruit, lol.

I haven't tested the new pot out yet to see what difference it makes. It's like the other one in that it's a single plant planter but it cost $300 to buy. I quit for the night right after I got it.
I cheated a little to get my perfect plant faster. When a tree would get a fruit on it I would grab it and plant it, then pause the game tell my sim to fertilize the plant 7 times then hit play again. After the 7 fertilizers that plant would either be ready to evolve and be real close to being ready. Then I'd evolve it and wait for that plant to produce fruit and do it again. :)

@grimsoul  You are such a tricky one!

When I stack fertilizer (like, use a sturgeon to fertilize 7 plants), I get a nasty glitch which stacks all the cuttings I get into one or two piles.
For example, my sim goes to Sixam and collects 12 cuttings which the game places into two stacks, arbitrarily. When the sim returns home, grafting one cutting from a stack uses up the entire stack.
So I had 13 cuttings but can only graft twice in the end.

I'm not sure the two things are related but I hate having to go get one cutting at a time.  :'(  Does that ever happen to you?

I just went in and done a quick test. I planted 4 lemon trees. One in the ground, one in a normal pot, one in the growfruit challenge pot, and one in the perfect growfruit challenge pot and then just watered them, no fertilizer then put the game on speed 3. Then kept checking them for being ready to harvest.
My results: All 4 grew up at the same time, all 4 evolved at the same time and all 4 bore fruit at the same time. The difference was in the harvest. The plant in the ground had 1 lemon, the plant in the normal pot and the challenge pot had 2 lemons and the plant in the perfect challenge pot had 3 lemons. So you will be ready for a full harvest a little sooner with the perfect pot.

The first one you get for turning in 20 growfruit is called Growfruit Challenge Garden Pot and one one for turning in a perfect fruit is called Perfect Growfruit Challenge Garden Pot. Real inventive names they used there. :)
