no sim does on sims 4 unless they are focused.

Actually, you need to click on the book a second time and then they will finish reading it.  They don't read it all in one sitting.

If you buy the speed reader reward trait they will read it in one sitting :)

Once your sim is reading a book, click on the same book and queue up 'read' twice more. The sim will probably stand up once the first 'read' is completed but will then just open the same book, sit down again and continue to read it. Most books will be completed with two readings but some take another half, so just keep an eye on your sim.
You'll know when the book is complete as if you click on it you will get the option to 'reread'.

Or, like tjtemple suggested buy the speed reader reward trait and then your sim will read a whole book with one direction and a lot quicker too!

@twitti Welcome to the forum. Is your game patched up to the most recent patch as the requirement to read a book in the library sounds like something that was in the game some time ago but has since changed.

And if it is patched, the option to "reread" will not fulfill the whim. Only a new book, read to completion will do that.

Oh hang on, My female sim has the nerd brain as well and I let her reread the baking skill book, but the skill bar is still showing over her head. Should I let her reread until the skill bar fulfilled or just let her try the next stage skill book?  My game is fully patched.

Oh I think I understood wrong. Sorry about this. :)

I don't believe skill books count for the books read, at least not that I've been able to find.  So grab one of the regular books and click read.  May need to read it a couple tries, depending on moods and needs.  Then it should register.

Oh...it's shown as she read 1/3 books at the moment. :) I will try to finish this book first. If it doesn't count any more, then I will let her read general books. Thanks :)

My sims have been using skill books for the Renaissance Sim's "Read three books" milestone. They work.

They must have changed that... either that or my game was glitched.  Mind you, this was toward the beginning, so maybe when they did the changes to the aspirations, they changed it.  Thanks for clarifying ^^

The skill books would always say "reread" after the first time you read them, I think its because of the different levels in each book
