You're already dressed for work!
« on: November 19, 2010, 06:51:27 PM »
Of late I have noticed a problem which I am not so sure is a bug any more than just poor design but I thought it would be worth questioning all the same.  I direct Sims to Dress for Work every morning yet as soon as the carpool arrives they change into their uniform again.  While it is not that this behaviour is especially troublesome, it doesn't very well explain the necessity of the original interaction.  Despite being patched and up to date, I have a recurring issue with Sims standing in front of the dresser for sometimes an hour or two before they will actually move, even when changing into Formal wear to dine at the bistro in Sunset Valley.

Is there a game-wide glitch with clothing interactions?  :-\

I think that a Sim is programmed to change into work clothes no matter what you do.  There's really no need for you to have them change into them because they'll do it on their own when they leave for work.  And if they are spending so much time standing in front of the dresser, it's really a lot of waste.

It seems wholly nonsensical to offer a manual alternative to an automatic action, especially when the former is overridden by the latter.  While it presents no problem to allow them to do this autonomously, there is an unavoidable delay when Sims eat at the restaurant as I stated previously.  Sure, I could negate the entire purpose of granting them the Discount Diner LTR in the first place by building a kitchen and forcing them to fend for themselves but it seems unnecessary.  It certainly doesn't seem that this should be typical...

The option to change into a uniform isn't so that they can change before work.  It's there so that they can put on their uniform at times other than work.

As for the formal wear to dine at the Bistro, they'll automatically spin into formal clothes when they go there to dine.  You don't need to do it for them.

In the interest of clarification, it was the delay when automatically changing into their Formal wear to which I was referring.  Often times, in the event that Sims have already acquired the Very Hungry moodlet, after the two or three hours they inevitably spend standing around gormlessly they are even hungrier and there has been an instance where this has led to death.  It is not for the want of trying; they just won't budge!  For Sims who live on the outskirts of town, it is hugely impractical when queued interactions are repeatedly interrupted to warn me of their pending starvation for the simple reason being that they won't get dressed.

That does sound like a bug.  They should just quickly spin into their formal clothes and go.  There are many ways to avoid starvation, though.  Why would you insist they eat at the Bistro to the point that they die?

In one particular instance, I'd wanted to take a Sim out to dinner in order to propose.  In another, I played a character who was so ludicrously addicted to the fame his career entitled him that despite being stone cold broke, he would manipulate and take advantage of his celebrity status in order to maintain his reputation without breaking the bank.  To quote Ken Watanabe, "In my dream, you play by my rules."

My intention was merely to determine whether this was the typical behaviour I could have expected, rather than to draw attention to the obstacles my compulsions force me to overcome.  ;D

Ok, no problem.  I just wanted to make sure you're aware of various options for the game.  If you're a very new player, you might not know all of your options.  :)

As for the behavior, no, it's not typical that they take ages to change into clothes.  If you click on your Sim to change outfit, he should do it immediately after you make the clothing selection.  Same with the dresser.  They shouldn't stand in front of it endlessly.  It should happen in a reasonable amount of time.

In my game, certain save files not all, I have the same problem.  But it happens with the auto change too.  My Sim while wearing pj's will finish breakfast, carpool is outside honking and she just stands there.  Whether I cancel the action or not and reorder her to go to work, she takes her time changing.  Other times in that same game she changes clothes totally fine.  Thankfully job performance has only been affected.

My sims are not quite that slow, but I have noticed of late, that they seem to stand in one place alot longer before starting a task.  Sometimes they will stand in front of the shower forever it seems.  It is not with all sims, but it is noticable more now than before. :)

So you all mean that whenever your Sims are meant to change clothes, they just stand there for quite some time before they do change?
If that's correct, then it's not anything buggy about it at all. When you've just opened your game, some things haven't loaded yet because they'll only start loading when you start using them (like patterns in Create-a-Style). So when you then change your Sim's outfit, the game first has to load the outfit, the mesh and its pattern(s) and then change the Sim into that outfit. It can take a while to load but if you've already loaded an outfit once, it won't take but a second to load it again. The thing with Sims standing in front of the shower and beds for some time before they change is the same, the game has to load the outfit (or in the case of the shower, the nude skin plus pixelation) first.
And I never have my Sims change into their work outfits before work. That's because my Sims mostly take a bath or shower before work, or sometimes go directly out of bed, so they automatically change into their work outfit when going out of the bed or shower/bath before the carpool arrives. :)

(By the way, long time since I last posted so nice to see you again!)

I'm having the same issue.  I've emailed EA about it with no real reply.  Hopefully, it's something that they will address soon.  It's annoying, and no, it's not just you.   ;)
