Ceiling tiles
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:17:22 PM »
I'm hopeless.  How do you install ceiling tiles and why would you since there seems to be a ceiling there when you pan the camera up anyway?  Still, it's a skill I'd like to learn if someone can tell me how.  (Simple please, I'm not very good at pc stuff)

What I did for the one Sim house that I actually put ceiling tiles into (don't see the point of them either but had to try them just once) was this:

1) At a slight downward angle (looking at the ground) zoom the camera in as far as it will go while in the room where you want to place the ceiling tiles.
2) Now slowly turn the camera up so it's facing the ceiling. Zoomed in this far the camera is very sensitive so a steady hand minimizes frustration.
3) Place your ceiling tiles as you please (works the same as placing floor tiles except it's overhead.)

I can't remember but play with moving between the different levels of the house ('page up' and 'page down' on the keyboard) to make sure the ceiling is visible.

I'm making a note for myself to try this with my Oct/Nov contest house tomorrow so I can verify this for you.

As to why, maybe it makes pictures for stories look more real with decorated/painted ceilings. Is it worth the effort, maybe not. I had actually forgotten that tool exists.

The normal ceiling can get so boring at times. The fun things about the ceiling tiles is that you can basically make the ceiling any pattern you want. I'd say that's a pretty good reason in itself although you do see it quite little.

It works the way I outlined in my previous post, Joria. I checked it today as it was months ago that I last played with ceiling tiles.

It's a lot of work for the amount of enjoyment you get out of it during game play. In my opinion.

Noplace I've ever lived has had a patterned ceiling.  The only place I remember seeing something on the ceiling is a casino.  ;D

I use to notice, after putting the roof on and then going inside, even in build mode or live mode, it was all open and no ceiling  :)and when I went to the floor section, and did the angle thing, there was no grid to put the tiles on the ceiling.  So what I did, is click the roof down one click until you see the grid from top view.  I would put the cheapest flooring down and then go into the house and level it out and then you can see the ceiling.  I was able to put any design I wanted at that point for my ceiling.  If this doesn't make sense, you will have to excuse my explanation this morning, only one cup of coffee so far.  I can do screen shots, but that is the way I do it anyway.

It makes perfect sense, but to put it in simpler words; you need to have flooring on the level above to make a ceiling for the level below. If there's no flooring on the above level, the game just recognizes it as a wide open space and there's nothing to put a pattern on. I myself have never patterned any ceilings as it's something I've completely forgotten to take notice of, but I do remember that EA said you needed floor on the above level to make a ceiling for a room. :)

I'm with Pam on this one.  Since neither I nor most of my Sims live in a Hollywood mansion, ceiling tiles are just a waste of my time and temper.  Thanks for letting me know how lily and Salty, and I will give it a try just to know I can.

I just think it is cool when you are in live mode and go to a certain angle in the room and having a ceiling, I think, gives it more of an ambiance to the room, but that is just me. :)

It can be odd for example if you build a wooden shack and it has the default gypsum ceiling.
