I know most townies in the base game have jobs. I know some sims I place in the world get jobs such as a cafe worker but they are not real jobs because if I move them into my family they have no job. Most of the townies I make or place from the gallery have no jobs when I meet them in game. Will they get jobs on their own? Are there gallery sims that can be placed with jobs already? Is there a mod to make townies I place in the game get jobs without making them my active household?

For positions like café worker, bartender, gym trainer, the game will pull townies from the available pool. Some of the premade townies have jobs -- Liberty Lee is an astronaut, Travis Scott a tech guru, etc. Homeless townies usually don't have fixed jobs. Several patches ago, the game was adjusted so that everyone was given a job, but the people who played rotationally didn't like that.  They would leave a sim with one job and come back to find that sim in a different job -- or unemployed.

So the answer to your question is that they might get jobs on their own. I don't know about gallery sims or mods. As for sims you place in your game -- you can set them up in one file, have them get a job, even cheat them through a few promotions, and then save them to your library. If you then place them as townies in a new game, they will keep their skills and jobs. A word of advice here -- if you don't want them culled, it's a good idea to place them in a house rather than let them be homeless.

If the job is not a "playable" career, moving them into a household will lose that job. If they are in a career, or an active career, they will keep it as far as I can tell. The Sims 4 has no story mode to speak of. Townies are essentially window dressing unless you make them playable. Their jobs and aspirations are generally not well-paired to their skills and traits anyway. It's normally easier to switch to a more appropriate job if you actually want them to advance efficiently. Everything about townies is randomized for the most part.

Homeless townies will eventually get culled anyway, no point in giving much thought to them.

Some of the game assigned careers will stick when moving townies into houses. The Yoga Instructor will and NPC fisherman and Community Gardeners but of course if you play them then they lose those jobs.

I'm not sure about other careers like librarian and Gym Trainer and such as I've never bothered to move any into a house and I usually grab the gym trainer for my own household!

Thanks I'll try setting them up in another file with a job then placing them in my world.

@Playalot Don Lothario is often used as a Gym trainer in my games, and he is a member of the Caliente Household so that one is definitely sticky. He does lose the job if you play him though. I moved a librarian that one of my Sims was romancing into a house, but to be honest I didn't pay attention. I was planning to eventually marry them, and I didn't want her to get culled before I could.

Slightly off topic, but librarians are safer to romance than most townies. They always have bookworm trait(any time I've tested it) and the other traits are generally not horrible. Many townies have a higher propensity for "negative" traits.

Thanks for that @meubanks  :) It's pretty interesting playing around with NPC townies and their jobs.
