Script Error While Reading the Guide
« on: December 13, 2015, 05:22:55 PM »
This is a question about my PC and the Guide pages, rather than the game and its add-ons.
I've had this trouble for a long time now, but I'm finally asking about it.  I hope this is the right place for my question.

The problem:
Whenever I'm looking at one of the guide pages for awhile, I eventually get an error message about the script running.
I'm prompted to either Continue, Debug Script, or Stop Script.  Once I get that error message, my screen freezes for awhile, no matter which option I choose.
Obviously, I have no idea how to debug the script.  This error never occurs when I'm on the forum part of the website.

Can anyone advise me on what I'm doing wrong? I'm using Firefox.  Usually, I just go do something else for awhile, or boot Task Manager and close my browser.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.   :)

Hi Oshizu,

Thank you for posting about the problem. We'll need to @Carl about it. As this isn't something I or Hubby (FlynnArrowstarr) can take care of. Sorry about that. It sounds like it's more on the website part of it rather than forum side. - If that makes any sense.

@oshizu Sadly it sounds like an ad is doing it - we don't use 'scripts' on the site, it's just a basic site with nothing fancy. Now, that's not to say it's a malicious advertisement but it's likely that it is coded poorly. Or, they are trying to do something sleazy by showing more than one ad in a box or something to that effect. My publisher networks are all against this behavior (so it doesn't seem like I'm blaming them), but sometimes marketing agencies will put these types of ads in to tell large corporations they sold all the ad impressions, when in fact they were overlapped on top of one another. This lets them make more money selling ads for more corporations at once, while slowing down my website - so I don't like it either.

I'm also not fond of the animated ones, and think I need to figure out which company is delivering the ad causing your issue, and also sending so many animations that slow down browsers. Really glad you told me, though it's unlikely I can fix it overnight. I'll use firefox a bit and see if I can file a report with someone who can do something about it.

Sometimes I get really lucky, just found an ad doing something exactly as I described, only we're talking 100s of attempts to load an ad. That's awful, and I'm reporting it immediately.

Could this be to connected to the problem I have been having?  I thought it was my computer with the internet explorer being so wacky and the age of my computer.

When I click on my bookmark for the sims site and get to the home page  (not the forum one, but for the guide articles) I will get an add that pops up and when I click on it to go away most of the time I get a message something like "web page cannot be found, internet explorer will need to recover the page".  If I am lucky, the adds will go away and I can read that page.  But, when I click on a link to another section, such as go from marriage to reading about babies, the adds pops up again and I will have the same problem.   When it recovers I go to the main page and sometimes I can't do anything, I just have to leave and come back later.

If I use the link from the forum I have less problems, but after doing a second link from the article, I sometimes get the same problem.

I just give up reading the articles and go to reading posts on the forum.

I was thinking it was due to my old computer.  I constantly have problems with popups.

@MrsFlynn and @Carl

Thank you for your responses to my inquiry.
That problem occurs whenever I look at a Guide page (which I do constantly since I refer to various pages while playing) on my home computer, which is a Lenova tower computer which I bought a year ago.
Today, I tried looking at the pages while at work (something I constantly fight the temptation to do) to see if the problem occurs on my work computer (Dell PC).
Oddly, I never get the script error message on my work computer.
So I guess there's something different or wrong with how my home computer is set up?
In either case, the Origin ad pops up at the bottom and I simply click "Close ad."

I also get ad problems on the guide. They just don't want to go away when I click the little x. So now I try and see if there's any hints and tricks in the Forum first before I go to the guide.

They are serving way too many animated ads. I just tried it on firefox and see the problem. I think it's seizing up, due to those poorly coded ads. I completely removed one of them for now so that it might be a little more speedy.

I'm still having problems with adds popping up.  I go to one the articles, say the one on traits, and within a minute or so an add will pop up.  I click on the x to get rid of it.  I'm reading down the page and a few minutes it start to lag, doesn't scroll down.  I get a message that the site not responding, needs to reload.
It reloads, but it takes me to the top of the page and I get the stupid add that I have to close out.
Click on a link to another section, and I get the add again, the lagging, the message that the site isn't responding and needs to reload.
I have finally given up trying to read articles; I was thinking it was Internet Explorer and my old computer.
If others are having problems could it be something other than my computer?

I get adds on other sites, but not the lagging and sometimes the not responding message.  But not near as often as here.
I don't get it on the forum at all when just reading different threads, but when I follow a link from here to an article on something, it still happens.

@Janna

@Carl is working on trying to track down the bad ads. Thank you for letting us know you're still having problems. :)

I've sent a second email to our ad provider and have also disabled a second advertisement in an attempt to mitigate the problem. The box that comes up is intentional and normally doesn't cause a problem. Someone is serving a very naughty ad through a square that is eating up memory and causing browser issues. Hopefully they get to my email soon,  and there is also the possibility someone in enforcement disables and bans the ad as they are layering ads behind one another.

If it wouldn't cause me major personal issues and violation of some agreements I'd turn them all off..  I'm pretty upset myself as I'm convinced this bad ad is why I have 2 threads about this. Sadly someone or some company is making money from this and I believe that it was intentionally put up around the holidays in order to maximize the time they could run it.

Big companies that advertise do not do it themselves,  they tend to go through marketing companies and some of these are shady and harm websites by putting these up.

Thanks Carl,

I positively have no doubt that this was done without your consent and knowledge.  I have been here to long enough to have gotten a feel for this site to ever think that anyone here would do this intentionally.

I thought it was my old computer.  I hate the stupid pop up adds that show up constantly on various sites.  I tend to avoid such sites anymore.  I figured they had somehow attached themselves to me and were just "following" me.
When I saw some others saying they were having problems it made me think it wasn't my computer after all.

@Carl if we block pop-ups, would that stop the ads? Is this possibly a short term fix that we can use? I'm not on my laptop right now (it's midnight and I have work tomorrow lol) so I'm not sure whether its feasible?
