What's the purpose of partying?

I've never quite understood the purpose of throwing a party.  Does it help boost your relationship with other sims? Like, could I potentially get the 10 friends I need to max out my charisma skill, just by inviting the same ten people to my parties over and over again?

If that's not it, then what's the point of throwing a party?

My sims rarely throw parties. If I have one in the political career, then they throw fund raisers. It's a quick way to fill the war chest. Sometimes if they're trying to find a spouse, they'll invite everyone who's eligible to get to know them better. I haven't noticed any big friendship boost. The easiest way to make friends is to get out and do friendly introductions to 25 sims. It gives a big boost to the friendship bar with the next people met. Oh and the Attractive lifetime reward is a big help.
Parties can cause lag, so I really don't like throwing them (much like real life for me).

Good parties boost relationships with everyone who came. Politicians need to throw fundraising parties as part of their career progression. They're a decent source of lifetime happiness points since you usually roll a number of wishes related to partying. With the perfect host ltr, you can get people to come at times convenient for you even if they work at that time. Party Crashers can be new potential friends.

And of course, this is a simulation game, and throwing a party can be fun.

I will throw birthday and and wedding parties. I hadn't really noticed a big boost to the friendships of the sims I invite but it's fun, so I keep doing it.

Uh... whoops.

Incidentally, I have noticed a relationship bump of some sort; My founder didn't interact with a party crasher at all, but they still got the relationship boost from Celebrity since said party crasher was added to his sims known list. After the party, said party crasher was bumped up to friend because my founder threw a killer party.

At least, I think that's what happened- I could be wrong and something else just bumped the guy up to friend.
