I had a problem last night where one of my sims was promoted, and after selecting the branch she would go into, the game said she was at her prior level again.  Is it ok that I reloaded to a few hours before she got home from work to fix this?

Good question and one the team did not discuss. I suppose you have to go to Granite Falls and "take a vacation." Otherwise, you'd be intentionally missing work.

Edit: Wait, I do not have the game up at the moment - isn't there a phone option where you can call work to take a vacation day and not go to Granite Falls?

Yes, it's entirely possible to take a vacation day without going to Granite Falls!

I have always assume taking vacation day means I can do whatever I want, not necessarily going to granite falls.  If I don't feel like going in to work today, I take a vacation day (using phone).

Ah, okay. Then disregard my comment about needing to go to Granite Falls. Sorry about that guys. The bottom line the team wants to stress is - you're either at work or you're taking a vacation day.
