No can't sell.  Any later purchases that aren't being left behind must be put in your inventory and move with you.

Correction:  There should NOT be any later/future purchases.  You are allowed to purchase 2 items before the first move and that is it -- no future purchases (unless it is for the 2 objects requirement).

Aside from the two objects left on your lot at moving time, your Sims' homes cannot be altered in any way - you need to play them as is.

Update:

Before moving to a new home each Sim is allowed to leave no more than one object. 15 homes = 30 different objects.
These can be: a unique object purchased from Buy Mode, a unique career or party reward, a crafted object unique to a skill (i.e. one painting, one cooked dish, one gourmet dish, etc.) or an object unique to a collection (i.e., one fish, one metal, etc.).

Since lots/homes cannot be altered with the exception of the two items left at moving time I thought I might mention gardening...

  • Gardening/planting on your home lot is banned.

One more question:  Is the purchase of the two items to be carried forward mandatory or optional? And, in either case, can those items ever be sold?

The two items (per sim) purchased before the first move must be carried forward - MANDATORY.  It is not optional, you cannot leave any of the 4 items behind to increase the lot value.

No, the items can NEVER be sold.  If you sell it, you will break the rule of income restriction.

Since the house cannot be altered except for the items you are allowed to leave behind, let's say one item is a toilet.  Can you sell or destroy the old toilet or do you just wind up with two toilets in the house?

Don't forget about this rule...

  • All household income is restricted to a) the Business career and/or b) the Charisma unlock Ask for Loan.

So, selling extra items is not an option. And hi Joria. :) nice to see you in the Tournament threads.

*waves "hello" at da Man*  In the case of my example, you'd be replacing a cheaper toilet with a more expensive one so you wouldn't be making any money from the sale of the old toilet.  Just, is it breaking the can't alter the house rule?  *scratches head, ponders current insanity on considering going for two more challenges*

Yes, it's breaking the can't alter house rule. You can't move around the furniture that's there or replace it. You can place the 4 items that travel with you in your inventory and the 2 items that you'll leave behind.

So, I presume that moving furniture around while living in the house in order to make room for the items carried forward also runs afoul of the "Play the house as is" rule.

Correct.  No moving furniture around.

Reworded the following:

  • Each Sim is allowed to purchase two Buy Mode items (including items sold on the computer) before the first move that they can keep permanently.

I have to ask for clarification :( Please tell me whether all I'm going to write below is correct.

During the first two days, I buy 6 items from Buy Mode (or buy 4 and craft/collect/get rewarded with two more). I leave the latter two in the lot, but put the first four into Family inventory, then move. After I moved, I can take the four items from the inventory, place them on the lot and use. During the next two days, I buy/craft/collect/get rewarded with two new items. When it's time to move, I leave these two on the lot, but take the previous four into my inventory again and move with them. And so long and so forth.

Is it correct?
