Computer crashing issues - especially on downloads
« on: July 11, 2015, 05:56:54 AM »
I recently downloaded two stuff packs (Party and Patio). After I did, I had issues with the game. Long story short, I uninstalled the game entirely and reinstalled and the issue seemed fixed.... until the game kept crashing after about 5 real time minutes.

So I repaired the game and made sure it was updated. Still the same issue. So I uninstalled the game again. Now every time I try to re-download the game, my computer freezes entirely. So much that I have to manually turn the computer off as I cannot even open task manager. As the download takes around 24 hours, this is a long and tedious process.

Just adding that I also seem to be having issues with my wireless mouse, it keeps losing it's power and freezing. I have tried different batteries but after a while it freezes again. I have ordered a new mouse just so I can rule out whether it's helping play a part with the computer problem.

I'm pretty useless at technology but the issue only seems to be when I am trying to download the game.

My computer is probably about 5 years old and it may be time for a new one, however I had no issues with playing the game before I downloaded the stuff packs. The computer has decent specs and I'm nowhere near my memory cap - don't think I'm even a quarter into the usage. Except for itunes and a few photos etc, the Sims is all I use the computer for. I specifically bought a computer for simming (at the time).

This is incredibly frustrating. Please help!  :(

Hi Tigerskin,

You mention re-downloading the game and uninstall/reinstall a few different times, but have you done this for the Origin client itself?

It may also help to clear your Origin Cache:

Would you mind sharing your computer specs with us?

Hi MrsFlynn, I twigged myself maybe somehow Origin had got corrupted. So now I have completely uninstalled it and re-installed it. I did try a factory reset of the game and clearing caches files of both the game and origin before I uninstalled the game. Although origin never worked as it claimed a file was open already (which wasn't true).

Currently I am halfway through downloading the sims base game so fingers crossed that the issue is solved..... As before it only got to about 18% then crashed.

If I still have issues I will put the specs of my computer on, but I really don't think the computer is to blame (I hope!) as it had no problem playing the sims before I downloaded these two stuff packs.

Thanks for getting back to me, it's much appreciated  :)

Ok, this is seriously weird....

So after re-installing all the sims games, I went into the game. I just pressed play, was going to test the game for ten minutes with a pre-made family as obviously I had not transferred my saved games or options or anything....

But there my game was from before uninstalling everything!?

The game itself seems fine, so I'm not exactly complaining but how has this happened?  :o

Likely it's due to the Electronic Arts folder still being there. :)

My games have never been available before when I've uninstalled etc....

Or am I going mad?!

Ha ha, anyway. It seems all fixed luckily.

Thanks for the help MrsFlynn  :)

Nah, I don't think you're going mad. *Snicker* When you delete the game, it does not delete the Electronic Arts folder, automatically. You have to do that manually.

What sounds like happened is that it wasn't deleted, and maybe one of your saved games were still in the Saves folder.

I'm happy to hear that it's fixed!! :)

@MrsFlynn .... Since I downloaded the spa pack, I am having the same issue.

I can't put my specs on at the moment because my computer has crashed and currently on my ipad (but I will put on tomorrow after work).

I've uninstalled origin AGAIN and tried to download the sims again, but it crashed.

It seems to have an issue every time I download a new pack for the sims. It's driving me crazy.

Before I used to just have to repair the game but the last time I've had to completely uninstall the whole thing as mentioned above, now that doesn't even seem to work. I'm at a complete loss and am ready to throw the machine out the window quite frankly.....

Have you tried downloading something other than anything Sims/Origin related. Example: Windows updates - Can you download the updates? Does it crash when you download the windows updates?

Tried last night to download some Window updates, it crashed. Eventually managed to download the updates and then the computer crashed....

At that point when I turned it back on it wouldn't go past a black screen saying "due to a software or hardware corruption" something or other.... And it wouldn't let me past that screen.

Think I'm going to have to get a computer expert in. So annoying as I have a week off next week and primarily I just wanted to play the sims! Typical timing  :'(

I'm sorry to hear that.

It sounds as though something got corupt in windows, so it can't open windows.

Either have a techy friend or tech shop help with getting files saved off of the hard drive and reinstall windows.

Keep us updated on how it works out?

@MrsFlynn I've had a computer chap round, could find nothing wrong with the PC, memory etc is fine.

So I'm in the process of reinstalling all the sims games/packs. It's been doing this since around 12pm Tuesday and it is now gone 9.30am Thursday. I still have another 4 packs to go....!

Surely this is not right that it takes so long? The base game itself took most of this time.

It is downloading apparently at around 140kb/s.

It's also crashed once again within this time frame.

I am literally tearing my hair out at this point. I wanted to play the sims on my week off  >:(

Hi TigerSkin.

Very sorry to see you're still struggling with this problem. I see from your posts that you're currently downloading at very slow speeds. What speed is your connection supposed to be?

When your system crashes. do you get a blue screen with a bunch of text on it (the so-called blue screen of death)? If so, can you let me know what it says and I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

Thanks. :)

Hi Flynn, I managed to update my graphics driver eventually (had issues with that as well) and thankfully that seems to have solved the problem!

Played for two hours straight and no crashes.

I have a nVidia graphics card and could not get the automatic update to work but tried the manual download (from the nVidia website) and it's worked perfectly since. I'm hoping that's solved the problem. I will update if I have further issues.

When the computer crashed though it wasn't the blue screen of death, it literally just froze with whatever the screen was at the time - usually me downloading the sims or if I managed to actually get to play it, the game about 5 minutes in.

I would be intrigued as to how to up my download speed though, if you have any insights I would appreciate it - as every time I get a new expansion pack, it appears to break the game and a complete reinstall seems to be required.

It took about 48 hours overall to get the base game and all packs on my computer.

I use a wireless router as my computer is upstairs, guessing that's relevant.

Hi, Tigerskin.

Great to see that updating the drivers helped the crashing problem!

Since your download speed is so slow at the moment I would highly recommend that - now that you have a working copy of the game - backup your Sims 4 game and keep the zip file in a handy spot. If an expansion or update breaks the game, you can restore the working copy without needing to download the whole thing. Should save you a couple days worth of downloading. :)

As for increasing your download speeds, it may depend on what's available for internet providers in your area. DSL is usually slower than cable, FiOS (fiber optics) is somewhere in the middle, but all generally have several tiers of service that can deliver faster speeds for higher cost. Speeds are all dependent on the area you live in - FiOS is generally only in the larger cities for example - and how many competing companies are in the region. Outlying areas unfortunately have fewer options than the bigger cities, but generally at least have a couple of options.

Hope this helps. :)
