Thanks for reading, everyone!

Regarding the question about the doctor career -- I thought I might get new tasks, but I didn't. Instead the doctor was back at work.

My apologies about Pauline. When I saw that she hadn't appeared in any of my screenshots, I realized that it would make sense for someone to have been taken by the plague, so she was it. She still exists in my library, if that's any consolation.

I've found out that I can age up the NPCs using CAS.fulleditmode in Household Management. I can give them traits, too.

I went back and looked for the posts where you explained how you would handle ageing but I wasn't sure what you meant then either.
When you say "NPC," do you mean your non-active Plague households (ultimately 9 out of your 10 played households) or do you mean any townies who aren't part of those soon-to-be 10 households?

Does this mean you'll be purging Oasis Springs of hot dog and clown outfits?  Just kidding, but my question about NPC is serious.

NPCs are the sims in non-played households, usually homeless. My 10 played households age 3 days each round, so after 7 rounds, the YAs become Adults, etc. I started out with aging off entirely, because I didn't know how long it would take for my sims to get established with their businesses, jobs, and aspirations. Now that I've got a better understanding, I've switched to aging on for the active household, with a normal life span. But I still age up my children and teens when they've completed their requirements (childhood aspiration for children, A average and level 3 in a part-time job for teens). Hope that all makes sense.

If you switch ageing on for the active household, do the other households age as well?

@Tixxis, No, only the household that you're currently playing. Your food doesn't spoil in the other households either, and your sims don't get promotions. They do continue to make friends (and enemies), though. I haven't had too many unexpected romances develop, but other people have had that problem.

I hope you don't find my questions too bothersome.  I'm enjoying your creative process in crafting this challenge as much as your storytelling.

@oshizu, they're not a bother at all. I'm enjoying trying to figure out how to do what I want, and I appreciate it when people are interested.

Round Eight

Chapter 36 – Birthdays

Benson Dahl is the first founding of the original 8 to have a birthday. Nothing about him has changed much except that he's an adult now.

His daughter Lucienne completed her aspiration to be a Rambunctious Scamp and has become a teen.
She is childish as well as cheerful and wants to have a Big Happy Family.

In the Lewis household, Olivia has become an adult. As soon as she saw this picture, she resolved to go on a diet and get a new top – one that covered her midriff.

It was some consolation that Johnny Zest soon followed. Of course, his looks didn't change at all.

Alicia was the first of the triplets to complete her requirement. She has the same hairstyle as her grandmother Alice and the same aspiration, to be a Painter Extraordinaire. She picked up the creative trait and found a job as a Table Cleaner at Hamburgerman. Usually she has a prettier expression on her face, but what's a girl to do when Don Lothario tells her she looks like a tall glass of strawberry and orange sherbet?

Erica came second. She's a loner now and decided to go for the Angling Ace aspiration. She's working in retail.

Nancy became a foodie and picked the Master Chef aspiration. She's working at Hamburgerman, too, but as a fry cook.

Shayna Bagley fixed herself a blue confetti cake for her adult birthday.

For her present, she transformed her bed and Elaine's into something more comfortable.

Elaine became a goofball when she turned into a young adult. She decided to become a Professional Athlete and will be starting as a Team Mascot. "Thanks for putting up with me," she told Shayna. "I'll try to make you proud."

Alexander Goth was the next to have a birthday...

...followed quickly by his wife Janessa.

Bill Pancakes invited Cassandra over so that they could celebrate their birthdays together. Cassandra went first...

And then teased Bill about starting a mid-life crisis.

Robert thought that he would spin forever...

...but he finally emerged from his cocoon. He's socially gifted now, an art lover, and aspiring to have a Successful Lineage.

(Watcher's Note:  I enjoy seeing how the teenagers turn out. Lucienne resembles her father; Alicia looks like Olivia, only blond. I don't know who Nancy and Erica resemble, but they do look like each other. Robert looks a lot like his dad, but his cheeks seem to come from Cassandra.)

Nancy is beautiful. I love Alice's disgust towards Don. So many birthdays, best wishes all around.

Chapter 37 – The S. Lees, P. Lees, and C. Goths

"Why did I pick Renaissance Sim as an aspiration?" Stacy muttered to herself. "Have to skill up in this, have to skill up in that – everyone leaves the toilet for me to fix so I can improve in Handiness..."

"Mom, your cake's ready!" Qatzi called. Stacy got up and went into the main room. "Happy Birthday!" everyone shouted.

It didn't seem fair – she was getting older just at the time when she needed the energy of youth to deal with teen-aged girls.

Luckily they got along with each other. Stacy didn't think she could stand it if they quarreled all the time.

Waldemar was working as an astronaut now.  Qimi worked in the mornings as a barista, and Qatzi in retail. Waldemar liked to stay up to make sure she got home safe.

And on his off-days, he went fishing. Waldemar said he would take her to Sixam as soon as he fixed up a rocket to get there.

Her birthday had been a great day, but now Stacy felt a bit woozy – and itchy. She'd learned at the hospital that orange juice would cure just about anything, so she fixed herself a glass.

Peter's birthday came as a surprise to him. Qiberty's wail on the trumpet suggested she might have a future as an assistant to the angel Gabriel.

Peter had been busy at the hospital. Ian Dillard showed up with something that was first feared to be the plague.

He'd been worried when first Cassandra...

...and then Alexander Goth showed up sick. As he recalled, they'd been involved in settling in the Dillards and the Goddard-Wans.

Luckily, the treadmill test showed that Alexander just had a bad case of bloaty head.

Peter fell asleep that evening almost as soon as he walked in the door. As he drowsed off, he heard Janessa reading to Javix from The Lord of the Swings.

After her scare at the hospital, Cassandra decided it might be better if she had a bedroom to herself. She didn't think she had anything contagious, but it was better to be safe.

She picked up a sim ray at Steampunk and enjoyed seeing what things might transform into.

Gunther has been making a name for himself as a portrait painter, starting with family, of course. First he did his cousin Isobel...

...followed by his Uncle Alexander. He took the paintings over to their house and hung them.

He's begun handling things at the gallery, too.

Great idea to work the illnesses into the story as almost plague related.

Chapter 38 – The Dillards and the Goddard-Wans

One morning, Rhiannon was outside watering her garden. She enjoyed how green it was; she still couldn't get used to the oranges and browns of the desert.

Cassandra Goth stopped by to chat. "Just thought I'd let you know – there's been a sighting of a flying saucer in the area."

"Flying saucers?" Rhiannon suppressed a giggle. "Are they a problem around here?"

Cassandra lowered her voice. "We've had at least one alien abduction – Stacy Lee claims that she was taken, but she was too dazed to remember anything else."

"Sounds like Stacy had one too many juice on the rocks," said Rhiannon.

"Could be," said Cassandra, "but everyone's saying that there are aliens around. I just thought I'd let you know."

"I appreciate it," Rhiannon said hastily, afraid that she might have offended Cassandra. "And I'm glad you stopped by. It gets a little lonely around here once Ian has gone to school and Ismael to work."

"Come over to my Gallery," said Cassandra. "There's always a crowd there. It'll give you a chance to meet some of your neighbors."

The next day Rhiannon took Cassandra up on her suggestion. In a short time she had met Bristol Muniz, Olivia  and Erica Lewis, and Robert Pancake. Alexander, she already knew, of course.

She hadn't intended to buy anything, but the guitar looked like fun. She strummed it experimentally, but quit when she saw Bristol frowning at her.

That afternoon Ian came home in a bad mood. "What's the matter?" Rhiannon asked when he climbed into bed and pulled the covers over his head. "I don't want to talk about it," came a muffled answer.

"Come on," said Rhiannon. "It can't be that bad. I put strawberries in the salad. You like strawberries. Come and get something to eat."

Ian came to the table, but he just pushed his fork around in his bowl.

"What happened?" Rhiannon asked gently.

"We had a test today, and I know this girl was trying to copy my answers," said Ian. "I called her on it, and she just started crying and said I was mean. She didn't even say she was innocent, just that I was mean not to let her see my answers. She was cheating, Mom, but I was the one that everyone got mad at."

Rhiannon sighed. "It's not easy being the smartest kid in the class," she said. "Sometimes you have to choose between being smart and being popular – but I want you to choose being smart," she said firmly. "Anyway, it's probably going to be a long time before anyone tries to cheat off you again."

"Yeah, and a long time before anyone speaks to me," Ian said glumly. But he cheered up a bit after he'd worked on his chemistry lab for a while.

Rhiannon was relieved when Henrietta Goddard-Wan came over to play with him a little while later. She was a frequent visitor, especially on the evenings when her father was working on a case. "My mom used to play the guitar," she told Ismael, when Rhiannon was trying to master the G-chord. "She was better, though."

That night, Rhiannon woke up to discover that Ismael had gotten out of bed. She hurried outside and saw that he was looking up into a beam of light.

She looked up in the sky and saw an actual flying saucer, just like what Cassandra had been talking about.

The next morning Ismael didn't remember anything. "Flying saucer?" he said, when Rhiannon told him about it. "That sounds like some dream you had, honey." He didn't seem to have suffered any ill effects, though, so Rhiannon decided not to worry about it.

It wasn't easy being a single parent, Hank was discovering. There was no one to share the burden of listening to the first song played on the violin. "That's great, honey!"

"Do you want me to play it again, Dad?"

"No, once was enough. I need to get some supper and you need to do homework."

Also, it was terrifying when Henrietta got sick. Rhiannon Dillard told him it was just bloaty head, the same as Ian had had, and that a glass of orange juice would clear it right up. The orange juice had worked, but he'd spent an uneasy two hours waiting for it to take effect.

And of course, there was the guilt. Henrietta was a good little helper, but he knew she was taking on tasks that normally an adult – or at least a teen – would do.

It didn't help when Cassandra Goth told him she'd walked Henrietta home from the Dillards at 10 pm the other night before he'd gotten home from work. Cassandra was getting to be as nosy as her Great-aunt Agnes, but that was beside the point. "I can make a suggestion to the Chief of Police, if you like," she'd said. "You know, point out that an earlier shift would be better for someone with a young child at home."

Hank didn't like, but he couldn't say that. This had led to an awkward meeting with his Chief.
"We're keeping you up too late at night, Goddard?" the Chief chuckled. "Not getting your beauty sleep?"

"No, sir, not at all," Hank said earnestly.

"Well, there's plenty to do at the station if the streets are too much for you," the Chief said genially. '"Fingerprinting, taking mug shots, that sort of thing."

That evening Hank had his birthday. He blew out his candles alone – Henrietta was busy with something.

"Don't look, Dad!" she protested. "It's your birthday card. It's supposed to be a surprise."

The next day it was a relief when someone came in reporting a crime, even if the person doing the reporting was a Bagley. Hank knew all about the family from his days in Sunset Valley. Shayna was all right, but he wouldn't be surprised to learn that her daughter had inherited some criminal tendencies.

There had been some fires started at the Blue Velvet Nightclub. Hank groaned. He hated arson cases, he'd had a phobia about them ever since his hair had caught on fire.

He collected some evidence and found a good witness, Robert Pancake, Bill's son.

Hank spent the rest of the day analyzing evidence and entering his pictures and reports into the database. At the end of the day all he knew was that the suspect had black hair and wore a long-sleeved shirt, a description that fit at least a quarter of the population of Oasis Springs.

When he got home, Henrietta made him close his eyes while she led him to look at a picture. "It's a cop arresting a bank robber, just like you, Dad," she explained.

"Aw, sweetie, that's great," said Hank.

"Wait," said Henrietta, "there's another." She took him to one on the other side of her desk. "That's you and Mom when you were kids. I copied it from a photograph."

Hank felt his eyes mist over, and he gave Henrietta a hug. What was it that ad said about the Army – the toughest job you'll ever love? They had no idea. The Army didn't even come close.
