Round Seven

Chapter 32 – The Dahls and Lewises

Here's a tip:  do not accept a serum from a scientist. It could make you angry.

Or it could make you pass out.

Bristol has been helping Benson build his rocket.

For a price – she wants another date. Another tip: the third floor of the Museum in Oasis Springs has a couch for that requirement to sit and talk with your date. It's usually pretty private, too.

When she's not working on the rocket, Bristol amuses herself with trying out the Neighborhood Hivemind option on the satellite dish. While she wouldn't dream of making everyone's bladder fail, she did want to see what the Happy option would do. To her surprise, it began raining.

But it seems as if it didn't work on everyone.

Next she tried to start a Dance Party. Cornelia Goth got the fever.

And so did Benson. But all the joggers just kept jogging.

Lucienne has been working to become a Rambunctious Scamp.

She also got a new outfit for herself.

And on Saturday, she was able to make some new friends.

(Watcher's Note – This is what I love about rotational play. Those are all "my" kids at the playground, and it gives me a warm feeling to see them playing together.)

Benson (with Bristol's help) finally finished his rocket.

After upgrading the landing gear, he took the rocket on his first mission to the planet Yaaaang (my apologies to any Yaaaangites if I misspelled the name). His next upgrade will be to the cargo bay.

Saturday afternoon, Olivia got a phone call from Peter Lee. Could she come over and consider what colors would look best on Javix and Qiberty?

"That orange shirt looks good on Javix," she said, "but I don't like those striped sleeves – I'll see if I can come up with something a bit brighter."

Qiberty was going to be more of a challenge. "She's a perfectionist like me," Janessa warned. "If it's not just right, she won't like it."

"White would look good on her, and yellow," said Olivia. "And maybe some kind of hat. I'll see what I can do."

At home, Olivia was pleased to see that her brood were getting along better. They took turns getting into the refrigerator now.

And they hugged each other instead of squabbling.

Alicia and Nancy had both completed their violin requirements.

While Erica was almost done with her drawings.

Geoffrey was still a worry. You never knew when he might start muttering strange incantations over the macaroni and cheese he was making.

That might have been why he'd lost his job in retail and was now doing manual labor. One good thing about the latter job was that it meant Olivia now had some help in the garden.

Olivia's other worry was that the girls kept getting sick. They were regulars at the hospital. Luckily, orange juice could take care of most things, like gas and giggles.

It was finally time for Jack to join Geoffrey as a teen. Olivia baked him a chocolate cake, and he blew out the candles.

Jack is now good, self-assured, and physically gifted. He has the Soulmate aspiration and is looking for a girlfriend.

Olivia and Johnny make good looking kids. I'm more than annoyed when my full house has a sick Sim almost every other day. Cornelia is resembles her Mum a lot.

Chapter 33 – The Bagleys, A. Goths, and Pancakes

People have asked Shayna why she doesn't find a different, better boyfriend than Antonio. "I don't know," she's said. "There's Trevor – only he's unemployed and hot-headed.

"Or there's Frank – also unemployed, besides being childish and mean."

For the time being, she's quite happy with running her bakery. "I know how to handle the cupcake maker," she says. "As long as I clean it every few batches, it works just fine.

"And I love putting sprinkles on donuts."

Shayna did get one treat for herself – a simray.  Her first attempt at transformation didn't work. Instead of a bed of any kind, she ended up with some barrels that weren't worth anything. She had to go to Dahl's Basic Needs and buy another bed.

Meanwhile, Elaine has been making progress. She's up to a B at school now, thanks to Shayna's coaching.

And she's been working out on her treadmill up on the roof instead of hanging out at the gym.

She just needs one more promotion as a barista and to get an A, and then she'll be able to add her selfie as a young adult to the ones on the wall.

The weekend – Alexander was happy to send Cornelia off to the playground where she could swing on the monkey bars and make new friends (and quit playing Keyboard Commander with its annoying little tune).

Isobel volunteered to make breakfast for everyone. Despite a few mishaps, the scrambled eggs turned out okay. At least that's what everyone said when she asked how they were – "They're okay, Issy, really."

Later that day, Janessa made a strawberry cake for Cornelia. It didn't turn out to be very good, possibly because she had a raging headache and was breaking out in splotches.

At last the moment came when Cornelia was ready to become a teen. Alexander and Janessa sang for her when she blew out the candles.

And then the party started. Isobel had been put in charge of sending out invitations. She'd invited every teenager she knew, plus Aunt Cassandra, of course. Geoffrey Lewis was kind of upset, so she and Janessa tried to calm him down.

Alexander had a better idea. He activated the Hivemind on the satellite dish and started everyone dancing.

That evening, Cornelia thanked everyone for helping to make her party so much fun. She's a bookworm now, with the aspiration to become a Computer Whiz (she does love those video games).

"You'll need to get a job," Janessa reminded her the next morning. "Why don't you work as a baby-sitter? You'd be good at reading to the children."

On Monday, when Alexander went to work, he had to make another satellite dish. After he'd finished, he decided to start everyone dancing. Only one person was dancing at first...

But soon everyone joined in the party. Alexander just wished that Janet Reno had been there, so she could have danced with them, too.

That evening they celebrated another birthday. Isobel came home with an A, completing one of Alexander's milestones. She didn't want a party, but was happy with just the family.

Isobel has added the neat trait to cheerful and self-assured. She got a job as a Medical Assistant at the Mustard Clinic, which is where her Aunt Cassandra works. She can't wait to tell her aunt that she outranks her.

The way Bill Pancakes sees it, the sooner he and the other sims in the medical profession cure 25 sims of their illnesses, the sooner he can quit being a doctor and go into journalism. At the same time, he has to admit that working in a hospital gives him plenty of stuff to write about. For example, the last person he'd expected to see was Malcolm Landgraab. He treated him for Starry Eyes.

And who would have guessed that aliens could get the same illnesses as sims? Who even knew there were aliens among us?

Then there was all the new equipment. Once he was promoted, Bill was allowed to scan patients with a device that looked remarkably like a flashlight.

He was even allowed to use the X-ray machine.

Back at home, Robert was working on becoming a Social Butterfly. Estevan Baugh became his second adult friend, but he still needed to be friends with three other children (besides the ones he was already friends with, that is).

Chapter 34 – The S. Lees, P. Lees, and C. Goths

Stacy was ready to move on from being a doctor. She had made it to the 3rd level of the career, satisfying her requirement for being a Renaissance Sim. And she had cured the last three patients necessary to clear the Watcher's requirement so that she and the others could take different jobs.

There were two things she would miss – taking care of the children of Oasis Springs (including her niece Qiberty)...

...and the opportunity to work off some of the weight she'd gained while carrying the twins.

Her next job would be in the Culinary profession. She just hoped that she could satisfy the meal-making requirements without burning down the house.

One cooking task she had mixed feelings about – making a cake for the twins' birthday. Qatzi was the first to grow up.

Stacy put more candles on the cake and put it back in the refrigerator for Qimi. She helped her work on that last mental point she needed to become a Whiz Kid by playing a game of chess with her.

And when the fumes from her chemistry lab gave Qimi dizzy spells, Stacy was able to cure her with a simple glass of orange juice.

At last both girls were teens. Qatzi was now lazy as well as a loner, and she decided to work on The Curator aspiration.

Qimi added the materialistic trait and the aspiration to become a Mansion Baron.

Peter Lee was in a quandary. He had always intended to become a professional athlete as soon as the plague was defeated, but he was really enjoying working in the hospital.  As a Medical Assistant, he could now perform x-rays on patients.

He could give them advice as well – and if some of that advice was that they needed more exercise and equipment was available at his store, Work It, that was all to the good. There weren't any judges yet, so he didn't have to worry about being charged with conflict of interest.

Most important, though, was the feeling that he could do a much better job than the slacker he reported to, who was always taking off early to go play golf. Peter couldn't wait to reach the point where he could complete the diagnoses of his patients.

At home, Janessa was helping little Javix with his desire to become a Whiz Kid.

Qiberty wanted to be an artist. She'd run into some problems at school with people who got angry at her for being an alien. Peter and Janessa had decided that she didn't need the hassle at her age, so they'd agreed that she should disguise herself.

To Peter's surprise, she looked quite a bit like him. The two children got along well, which pleased him.

Cassandra didn't really enjoy working in the hospital, but she was determined to get a promotion before she moved on to a job in music. It was galling that her niece Isobel – whose birth she remembered – should have started as a Medical Assistant just because she graduated from high school with an A average. Cassandra wouldn't miss the microwaved meals (you'd think a hospital would offer healthier choices).

And while she enjoyed children, she didn't enjoy seeing them sick and suffering.

Not to mention the fact that she flinched almost as much as they did when she had to give them a shot.

It was the second happiest day of her life when she could leave the hospital for good and get back to composing music for the violin.

The happiest was seeing Gunther become a young adult. He was now creative, a geek, and self-assured.

The first thing he did was to have her sit for her portrait.

It turned out so well, that Gunther decided to become the portraitist for Oasis Springs.

Now that Gunther had grown up, Cassandra was free to marry Bill Pancakes and move in with him. She didn't know if she should do that, though. Gunther was going to need her help in getting the other residents to come over for their portraits. Cassandra didn't want to boast, but she did know everyone who was anyone.

A few housekeeping notes:

The first is that I'm going to try and get the Legacy Leader achievement (10 households of 10 generations). I know that it won't actually register; there's a glitch with the family tree, which causes you to lose ancestors after the 5th generation, and I will probably have to start a new save at some point in time, but I'll know if I complete it.

Also, I've finally figured out how to handle my NPCs' aging -- to do it manually, after every 7th round.* For my households, I have aging on only for the Active household, and I've moved to a normal lifespan. That way if some of my children and teens don't finish their requirements (I'm looking at you, Geoffrey Lewis), they'll still grow up. My original 8 have gotten an extra 4 days, but I figure they've needed that.

I've decided not to use the rewards that have a permanent affect on sims' needs -- Steel Bladder, Never Weary, etc. I do use the temporary boosts (teens who have part-time jobs and are trying to get A's have no fun) and the ones that help with careers and aspirations. I don't change aspirations until they've completed one.

I've also decided to start upgrading my sims' houses and businesses when their cash on hand from both business and household income is $50,000 -- still a long way off for everyone. I'm also giving them permission to start selling stuff out of their inventory.

*Well, this was a great idea. Unfortunately, I can't age up anyone in Household Management. Instead, I'll have to cull from time to time so that my elder sims don't have the same teen-aged customer.

You mentioned that the Legacy achievement consisted of 10 households for 10 generations.
Will you be adding two more households soon or did you already do it and I've been so busy trying to keep all your sims straight (hehe) that I didn't notice?

I enjoyed reading the what your sims liked and didn't like about working at the hospital.
Has the doctor career been hard to get promoted for you and your sims?  (I still haven't tried this career but soon....)
Stacy and Waldemar's girls have grown up into real lookers!  And Gunter did a lovely painting of his mother.
The second generation is growing up so quickly.

And poor Shayna!!! Why are all the eligible bachelors all so unappealing!? Lol, no gym trainer at the gym yet?

@oshizu, I haven't added the two families yet -- that's the next episode.

Promotions in the medical career so far have been fairly easy, coming after 2 days of following your sim to work. The biggest headache is that sometimes you can't do your tasks because the doctor has left. Peter, for example, was stuck because one of his tasks was to transfer a patient to the doctor and the other was to give medication to a patient -- which he couldn't do because the patient hadn't been diagnosed yet. The fix I found was to switch control to his wife at home, then go back to Peter at work. It means 2 loading screens, but it works.

Chapter 35 – The Dillards and the Goddard-Wans

It had been a long journey from Willow Creek, long and sad because Pauline had been taken by the plague on the first day. At last the five of them had reached the mountains around Oasis Springs.

They found a small park – deserted, of course -- and Rhiannon couldn't help wondering whether they would find any other survivors here.  The two children settled down to play chess, but Henrietta got bored and soon wandered off.

Ismael Dillard found a picnic table surrounded by flowers and told Rhiannon to come and sit down.

"As soon as I've finished the potatoes," she called back.

Even if there was no one left in Oasis Springs, she thought they might stay in the park for a little while. She'd spotted lemon trees and strawberry bushes on the way in, so they wouldn't starve, and they could always sleep on the benches.

"Rhiannon Dillard? Is that you?"

She turned and saw Alexander Goth coming towards her.

"You're a sight for sore eyes," he said. "We didn't think anyone had survived from Willow Creek. Who all is with you?"

Rhiannon felt tears pricking at the back of her eyelids. "My husband Ismael and our son Ian," she said. "And Hank Goddard and his daughter Henrietta. Pauline didn't make it. And neither did your parents. I'm sorry," she said.

"Cassandra and I kind of figured that," said Alexander. "Well, we've got a couple of houses you guys can move into. They're just cinderblock boxes, but the lots are huge."

"Ian!" Rhiannon called.

"Let him finish his game," said Alexander. "Cassandra will see that he gets to your new home."

The view from the top of the hill was amazing. "Who lives in those houses?" Rhiannon asked.

"No one," said Alexander. "We left them empty in case they're contaminated. Well, I think you'll find everything you need. And if there's something missing, you might be able to get it at one of our stores." He gave them directions to Dahl's Basic Needs, Lewis & Zest Outfitters, Goth Gallery, Bagley's Bagels, Work It!, Bookcakes, Steampunk, and of course his own Child's Play. And then he left, walking back down the hill.

Ian was up early the next morning and ready to go exploring. The first thing he found was a frog hiding in a water pump.

There were all kind of rocks around, and Ian was pretty sure that some of them held crystals and fossils, maybe metals, too.

He also discovered an abandoned mine shaft. He thought he could crawl through the gap in the boards, but then he heard his mother calling, telling him it was time for lunch. He'd be back with a flashlight, he promised himself.

Rhiannon looked out over the hills. She didn't know if she could ever get used to seeing rocks and sand instead of green grass and bushes, but she had to admit that the air here was clearer and cleaner. The main thing was that they had found a community again.

It was amazing to Hank that with so few people alive there should still be a need for a police force, but such was the case. His first day with Oasis Springs, he was assigned to rookie work, just so the captain could take his measure. The first thing he had to do was pat down one of the local lowlife, Dwayne Wayne. He had a turkey baster in his possession. It had a sharp point, so Hank confiscated it.

The second thing was a trout.

"Where'd you catch that trout, Dwayne?" one of the other officers called.

"Wouldn't you like to know," Dwayne called back. "It's not my fault you guys can't catch any fish."

"Bag it and put it in the fridge for him," the officer told Hank. "He can take it with him when he goes home."

Later that day Hank was sent to patrol a deserted neighborhood. "No one's living there," the chief told him, "but we want to make sure the houses stay in good condition."

The house reminded Hank of the one that he and Pauline had shared back in Willow Creek even though the lawn was overgrown with daisies.

At home that evening he asked Henrietta how her day had gone.

"Okay, I guess," she said sadly. "I miss Mom."

"I do, too, honey," he said. "Lots and lots."

Just then there was a knock on the door, and Henrietta went to see who it was.

"Hi, Alicia," she said. "Dad, can I go outside and play with Alicia?"

"Sure," he said. "Just make sure she's able to get home before dark." Hank smiled at how quickly Henrietta's mood had changed, and he realized his mood was lighter, too. It was good to be in a town again, where his daughter could find friends.

The next day, Hank had a case to work on. It wasn't much, just a broken window at a nightclub on the edge of town, but he took the witnesses' statements diligently.

And later he posted the clues on the crime map.

Cassandra Goth stopped by and asked him how he and Henrietta were settling in. "Just fine," he told her. Hank had always considered the Goths to be a bit stuck up, but he realized that the plague might have changed them. Cassandra was certainly friendlier than he remembered her.

In the park later on, Hank stopped a girl who fit the description the witnesses had given – except that no one had said her skin was green. It seemed to him that might have been an obvious detail, so he let her go. He didn't want to get off to a bad start in Oasis Springs by making a false arrest.

Even without the arrest, he was promoted to Corporal. "Don't let it go to your head," the captain warned him. "It's because you have the most experience of everyone except our graybeards."

I'm sorry about Pauline not surviving the plague, too.
Very nice how you have the Dillard family run into Alex who helps them get settled in Oasis Springs.
Also, I'm looking forward to learn what new shops you will add to Oasis Springs.

About the doctor career, when you describe the "Switch control to [wife]" and back to the hospital as a fix, do you mean that different tasks appear that don't necessarily require a doctor still on the job?
