Chapter 20 – Benson Dahl and the Lewises

It was time for Benson to start upgrading the furniture he had for sale. Everyone had a double air mattress and a shower to complain about, so he managed to find some beds and better showers.

Everyone thought the new bed was more comfortable, but they weren't buying it. Benson realized later that he had forgotten to put the “For Sale” sign up.

After he shut down the shop, he went hunting for metals. He was going to need one for his work the next day.

Monday morning, Benson woke up bright and early. He fixed himself some eggs and toast on the new stove he'd bought from Steampunk. They would make a welcome change from veggie dogs roasted over an open fire.

Today was going to be exciting – his first task was to make a ray gun.

Once it was made (and named DahlRay), Benson had to test it out. Zachary Johnson looked like a promising target...

Of course, as soon as he'd tested it, Benson had to set Zachary free.

By the end of the day, Benson had been promoted to the 3rd level, Junior Tinkerer. He went fishing in the pond in back of his house to celebrate.

Olivia's friends – Stacy and Shayna, to be exact – had been asking her to provide some nightwear for a while now. She bought another mannequin and set it up in a pretty nightgown. Of course, Cassandra was the first one to show up and buy it.

The store was doing well enough that she and Johnny could afford to buy a few more things. The first thing they got was a word processor for Johnny to write jokes on.

They also got a violin for Geoffrey. That was a mixed blessing – Jack was the only one uncritical enough to be able to stay in the same room with him, aside from Johnny's friend Kaleb, who was deaf.

Olivia's garden was coming along nicely.

And she enjoyed being able to watch the sunset.

But something was missing. Her only real source of fun was woo-hooing. That came with consequences, however.

“Of course I'm happy,” Johnny said, when she told him. “But where are we going to put the little fellow?” Olivia noticed that he automatically assumed it would be a boy.

“We could move the dining room table outside,” said Olivia.

That solved the immediate problem, but Olivia knew that she was going to have to find some other form of entertainment. The garden was more work than pleasure; ditto for making herbal remedies. Johnny had his guitar, Geoffrey had his violin and drawing table, and Jack loved going to the playground.

One day, she decided to play around with Johnny's microphone. She'd always been a goofball, telling jokes came naturally to her.

“You know what it's like being a mom?” she said into the microphone. “It's watching your two sons gather around their father to learn how to fix the toilet. And then it's cleaning up the mess they've made afterwards.”

She wasn't ready to have them rolling in the aisles at the Roxie, but Olivia thought that with a little practice (and more material from Johnny and children), she might be able to make some extra money with tips.

@Nettlejuice, you and Olivia both. See below.
@Playalot, I've always loved the things that the sims consider appropriate to do in the bathroom. Usually, it's proposals and weddings; chowing down while Dad fixes the toilet is almost normal.

Chapter 21 – The Bagleys and the Lewises (continued)

Bagley's Bagels was doing fairly well. There was a kaffeeklatch that met there regularly, and Shana joined in the conversation occasionally.

She was often busy enough that she only had time for a quick dish of yogurt while she was running the store.

Elaine was a big help when she was finished with school for the day.

Most of the time, though, Elaine was at the nearby playground, either commanding her spaceship...

...or chewing out the ensigns who wouldn't cooperate.

When Saturday rolled around, Shayna had a surprise for Elaine.  “Let's go to the pool,” she said.

“Pool?” Elaine repeated.

“All of us contributed some money so that a gym and pool could be built,” Shayna told her.

To Shayna's astonishment, the biggest contributor had been Peter Lee. “Don't you think it will give you competition?” she asked. “I mean, if people can exercise at a gym, why would they buy your equipment?”

“Once people find out how much fun it is to use a treadmill or punching bag, they'll want one at home,” Peter had answered. “I look upon it as free advertising. Besides, I need to work out at a gym in order to complete my aspiration.”

The next day, Shayna had another treat planned – a birthday party. She told Elaine to invite her friends, and she'd bake a hamburger cake. Most of Elaine's spaceship crew was able to come, but Isobel and Cornelia Goth couldn't make it.

Shayna also invited Armando over. Elaine gave her father a big hug when she saw him.

He spent the rest of her party playing on the computer. Shayna thought that was typical. On the other hand, it was some consolation to know that he felt embarrassed about wearing the sombrero.

Finally, it was time for the big moment. Elaine took a deep breath...

...and the next thing Shayna knew, she had an active and outgoing (and pretty good-looking) teenager on her hands.

Over at Sandtrap Flat, Olivia Lewis was going into labor. She really wanted a girl, and she had a name picked out for her – Erica, after her father, Eric. Olivia's wish came true.

She named the next one Nancy, after Johnny's relative.

And the third one, Alicia, after her mother.

“Oh my,” she said when she was finished. “I don't know what Johnny will say when he wakes up.”

A comedy routine began to form in her mind – Be Careful What you Wish for.

Wow, congratulations to Olivia on the triplets!!!
Their two sons are soooo cute and now three daughters, can't wait to see how they all grow up.

At the kaffeeklatch, there's a dark-haired man dressed all in white with black shoulder patches. Who is he? Lol, I've seen him in many of your screenshots ever since your group moved to Oasis Springs.
Where did you build your gym/pool?  Was there a vacant lot in Oasis Springs?

@oshizu, his name's Luke Chadwick -- he's a townie and a frequent shopper. He has the evil trait, so none of my sims have gotten involved with him.

I built the gym on the lot of the original gym in Oasis Springs.

Chapter 22 – The A. Goths and Bill Pancakes

Alexander loved his job. Even though he was only an apprentice inventor, he was already being given the opportunity to make a ray gun.

He had to try it out, of course. Naomi Wilsonoff was the lucky recipient.

He chipped her free immediately afterwards.

The only problem with his job was that it didn't end until 7 at night. Alexander was exhausted when he got home. But Janessa and Cornelia were still wide awake. Janessa went to the new gym to work out for a while.

And she let Cornelia go over to the playground, where she was traumatized by a sea monster.

The next day didn't go so well for Alexander. He had an accident while trying to make a red-hot serum.

Instead of using a regular shower, he was sent to the decontamination chamber in the basement.

At least on this day he didn't get quite so hungry. Isobel had made him one of her health potions. It had no taste, but it filled him up. By the end of the day, Alexander had been promoted to Junior Tinkerer.

On his third day at work, Alexander met Bristol Muniz. She was very friendly, almost too much so. It was like she didn't understand about personal space. If he'd been in a flirty mood, he might have taken advantage, but he knew that Janessa would get furious if he got involved with one of his co-workers.

That night, he decided to use his latest accomplishment, his upgraded ray gun. “You and I are going to get a better bed,” he informed Janessa.

The bed was of better quality, but not quite as large. Janessa sent him over to Dahl's Basic Needs to buy a new one.

“You going to be a scientist when you grow up?” Cornelia asked Isobel.

“I don't know,” she said. “The ray gun is cool, but I think I'm going to be a doctor instead. Or maybe a cook. Something that makes people feel good, anyway.”

Bill Pancakes was still trying to figure out what had happened over in Willow Creek. Bob and Eliza Pancakes came to his store regularly, but it was obvious that they weren't his parents. They didn't have any children, which kind of made him glad. And Summer Holiday was vehement in her statement that Liberty Lee and Travis Scott had never gotten involved, and certainly never had children. She claimed there had never been any plague either, which was kind of spooky. But she did admit that the Goths had left town, along with the Spencer-Kim-Lewises.

Each book was making Bill a more successful writer. It was a hazardous occupation, though. His word processor broke down frequently, and he couldn't afford to replace it. The only thing he could do was to fix it, but he always felt like he was taking his life into his hands.

In short, it was time for him to start thinking about the next generation of Pancakes. Cassandra Goth was still the only woman he was attracted to. The next time she came over to the store, he asked her to stick around for a while.

“I've been thinking that really there's no reason why you and I couldn't get married,” he started to explain to her after he closed up shop. “There are enough people running around Oasis Springs to maintain the gene pool. What do you think?”

Cassandra thought it would be best if he went somewhere else and left her alone for a while before she said something that would damage their friendship. Bill went off to read one of his books.

When he returned to his store, Cassandra had left. He decided to go visit Olivia, to see what advice she might have. He arrived just as the triplets were emerging from their bassinets. Erica was first. Olivia told him that she had a mean streak.

Nancy came next. She was neat.

And Alicia was last. She was squeamish and destined to be the recipient of countless frogs, fish, and insects from Erica. They all were artistic prodigies like their brother Geoffrey.

“Heavens, Bill, play to your strength,” said Olivia. “You're a writer. There's not a woman alive who doesn't like getting love letters.”

So Bill went home and wrote to Cassandra, reminding her that he'd been in love with her ever since they'd been in high school and she'd kissed him in the library, ever since that embarrassing visit to her house, when her father had interrogated him and her mother had kept insisting that he eat more salad because he was so thin. She was the most beautiful and talented woman he'd ever known and all he wanted was to make her happy.

It was nearly midnight when he hit “send,” and he didn't expect to see her until the next day. But she showed up on his doorstep just as he was getting ready to fall asleep.

“We need to talk,” they said simultaneously, after the kiss. “In the morning,” they said, again simultaneously. Bill went to bed and surprisingly, to sleep. Tomorrow there would be plenty of time to make plans.

Chapter 23 – The S. and P. Lees

It was something Waldemar never got tired of – watching his two green girls talking with their mother.

Some of his fellow colonists might be homesick for Sixam, but Waldemar wasn't one of them. He enjoyed everything about living among sims – the strange things they chose to wear on their heads, for one.

And the amazing stories they expected their children to enjoy, for another. Who would expect a story about the defeat of a playground bully to be entertaining?

And what was a playground anyway? He got to find out when Peter came over one Saturday morning to take them all to the park. His two girls pretended to be flying a spaceship – Waldemar didn't point out that the one they were on was wholly unsuited for space travel.

Peter played chess with his niece – Waldemar hadn't learned the game yet.

But he knew that both Stacy and Qimi were fond of it.

And the other thing people did at the playground was take selfies.

Helping Qimi with her homework was a fascinating experience. Math was an eye-opener – why did the sims use 12 as the basis for their divisions of time and space, but 10 for their numbers?

It was no wonder that they were so backward in science. Working with their antiquated equipment was both amusing and frustrating.

The food was dreadful, of course. The one thing Waldemar would go back to Sixam for was some of the fruit.

The fishing, on the other hand, was great.

Peter wasn't surprised to find that all the equipment in the gym was being used. It was surprising to see Eliza Pancakes, however. She spent so much time shopping, he didn't know when she would be able to work out.

There was still room in the pool, at least.

Peter bought a punching bag for himself. His house was beginning to fill up, what with his refrigerator and a picture he'd bought from Goth Gallery.

He tried to stay on a healthy diet, but the cupcakes at Bagley's Bagels were just too tempting.

Overheard at his store one morning:  “Cassandra, you're breaking his heart. It's just one child. The gene pool can handle that.”

Pressured? Are you insinuating that a Watcher might cause one sim to get romantically involved with another? I never heard of such a thing, lol.

hahaha. Nice response to the implication of watcher interference.

Yes, I also enjoyed hearing what Waldemar thought of the lives of the sims around him.
Their daughters are really cute in that selfie. How do others react to them?  Since theye're not in disguise but obviously blue, do other sims still have that "discovered xx is an alien" thingy?

Thank you for answering about the mean random townie and the gym location!

Chapter 24 – The C. Goths

“It's morning,” Bill said on the phone. “Can I come over and talk?”

Cassandra agreed readily. She was wearing a new outfit, one she'd picked up at Olivia's store. She still hadn't made up her mind about Bill, but it never hurt to look one's best. There was a knock on the door and she hurried to open it.

Awkward. Kristian – whom she hadn't seen in quite some time, not since Gunther had been born, in fact  – had chosen the exact same moment to show up.

“I see you have company,” he said and withdrew in a huff.

“What – ?” Bill began.

“I didn't know he was coming,” Cassandra said hastily. “What was it you wanted to say?”

“I love you madly,” said Bill.

“I love you, too,” said Cassandra. “But – “

“Which means I'm not going to marry any other woman,” said Bill. “And if I get abducted and produce an alien child, it will be wholly alien, not my offspring at all. So if you want to get my genes into the pool, you're going to have to jump in with me.”

Cassandra opened her mouth to say something, but found that her brain had quit working.

“I know you don't want to marry me,” said Bill. “You want to work as a doctor when that becomes possible, and I want to work as a doctor, too, and we couldn't both do that.”

“True,” Cassandra conceded.

“Plus I'm a goofball and you're gloomy, and you probably think we'd get on each other's nerves,” Bill continued. “But I will always love you.”

“I need to think,” said Cassandra. “Let me have some space to think about this.”

Bill left, and Cassandra played her violin for a while. Gunther joined her in a slightly inharmonious duet, but Cassandra didn't mind. He was making good progress towards becoming creatively gifted.

When she set her violin down, she noticed that Bill had left a book behind. It was his book of poetry, Plague Musing.

“Really?” she said to the air. “Isn't this the equivalent of dropping your glove and having to come back to get it?”

But she sat down to read it anyway. To her surprise, some of the poems were quite serious, even somber in tone.

The next morning, after Gunther had left for school, Cassandra called Bill and suggested that they go out on a date. “How about the museum?” she said.

They found a couch on the third floor where they could be fairly private. Instead of talking about anything serious, they started flirting with each other.

Cassandra had kept her feelings bottled up so long that when she finally took the lid off they all bubbled out. “Okay, I'll have your baby,” she said between kisses. “Let's go try for it in the Observatory,” she added with a giggle.

Later that evening she felt very odd. It was quite different from the way she'd felt when she was pregnant with Gunther.

“Mom, I think you're running a fever,” he told her.

A fever? Cassandra immediately thought of the plague. No one had developed a serum for it yet, which meant she would die. But if it wasn't the plague... “Do we have any orange juice?” she asked Gunther.

“In the fridge, Mom,” he said.

Cassandra began feeling better as soon as she finished the orange juice. It had just been a cold. She would have to remember the curative properties of orange juice when she became a doctor.

She went to bed, but woke up a little while later, needing to pee. And in her panic about the fever, she'd forgotten to take a pregnancy test. She took one now, and discovered the welcome news.

She started to call Bill, but then realized that at 3 in the morning, he would probably be asleep. She phoned him the next day.

“Where have you been?” she asked. “I've been trying to reach you.”

“I was writing,” Bill said sheepishly. “I must have turned my phone off.”

“That reminds me,” said Cassandra. “I read your poems – the book you left at my house – and they were really good. But they got your name wrong on the cover.”

“I know,” said Bill. “My first publisher got it wrong, and rather than confuse matters, I decided to stick with it. In fact, if you ever do decide to have my child, I'd like you to give it the last name of Pancake.”

“That was what I was calling about,” said Cassandra. “I'm pregnant.”

“Great!” said Bill. “And don't worry. I'll raise little Robert, or Beth, as the case may be.”

They talked a little more, and then Cassandra returned to the painting she'd been working on. It was the most excellent one she'd ever done, and she thought that she might paint those 3 palms again, in a different light, in the style of Monet.

When she finished the painting, she started making a cake for Gunther's birthday.

He invited a few friends over, and his father as well. Gunther blew out his candles.

And became a teenager who wanted to become a Painter Extraordinaire.

Gunther sat and talked to his father, who asked if there was anything he wanted to know about. There was one question that was uppermost in Gunther's mind – what was woo-hoo all about?

Kristian gave him a brief, clinical description and then said that he'd help him with his homework.

That night, Cassandra went into labor.

She named the little boy Robert Pancake.

And when he grew up into a cheerful little social butterfly, he went to live with his father.
