I love Alexanders character, he's so sweet. I think Shayna needs a friend to worry about her.  :)

Chapter 9 – Alexander Goth

This is the view from the roof of Alexander's store, Child's Play.

He's been having a hard time lately. He really wants to fall in love and get married. Cassandra says that's just because of his traits – Alexander is romantic and family-oriented – but that doesn't make his feelings any less real. To cheer himself up, Alexander took the “for sale” sign off his lump of clay and started playing with it.

He opened the store, and pretty soon some customers started showing up. One of them, Janessa Jeffords, had been coming to the store pretty often, even though she didn't have children. As soon as he finished ringing up Eliza Pancakes, he was going to close the store and see if she wanted to go out with him.

Alexander suggested the Museum, which Janessa agreed to. She was a bookworm, he discovered, which was great, because he was a bookworm, too.

Janessa was also a foodie and a perfectionist. She was currently working in product placement for a pizza company, but that was a job she could quit any time. She stopped talking for a moment, and Alexander kissed her.

The kiss went well, so he followed it up with a proposal of marriage.

“Oh, no, no, no,” Janessa said sweetly. “It's much too soon. We hardly know each other.”

Embarrassed – mortified, really – Alexander went back to his empty rooftop. He had a book now – an Introduction to Charisma – if he cared to read it. But even reading wasn't something that could pick up his spirits.

The next morning, Alexander opened his store and sold a junior chemistry set to Bob Pancakes, or rather the guy who was pretending to be Bob Pancakes. He didn't know what was up with him and Eliza (she'd bought a child's violin the day before). Neither one had gotten a bassinet yet, so they weren't expecting. Maybe they were planning to adopt.

Around lunchtime he went over to Shayna's bakery. He'd been dropping by every couple of days recently.

“Checking up on me?” Shayna asked.

“And grabbing some of your donut holes,” said Alexander. “Everything okay?”

“A-okay,” said Shayna.

Alexander sat down to eat. “Guess who!” a voice fluted behind him. It was Janessa. His heart skipped a beat, and Alexander turned around to give her a big grin. Just then he noticed Shayna...and his sister Cassandra. At the moment they had their backs to him, but this had the potential to be really awkward.

“You're not mad at me?” he asked Janessa as he stood up.

“Because you proposed? Why should I be?” she said. “It was just too soon, that's all.”

Alexander would have loved to continue the conversation, but this wasn't the place. He was about to suggest that they go to his store when Shayna came up. From her expression, he guessed that she'd overheard part of their talk. “WHO is SHE?” she mouthed in an angry whisper.

Alexander wasn't up to making introductions. He fled.

He spent the rest of the afternoon buying books at Bill's store and picking up another light fixture from Benson. In the evening he decided to go fishing in the park. On his way to the stream, he passed the rocket ship where a little girl was playing. It was really good to see children in the park again, he thought, even if they weren't his.

A few minutes after he baited his hook, Shayna came up next to him. He suddenly realized that the red-haired girl on the rocket ship was probably her daughter. For a few minutes they fished in an awkward silence. Then they both spoke. “About this morning – “ they began.

“I didn't mean to spring it on you that I was getting involved with someone else,” Alexander said. “I hadn't planned to meet her at your place; she just showed up.”
“And I didn't mean to be rude about it,” said Shayna. “I realize that you want a family, and that we can't get involved with each other. I'd like to meet her some time. She looks nice.”

“She is,” said Alexander. “And you and I will still be friends, right?”

“Right!” Shayna agreed.

The next morning Janessa agreed to meet him at the park before she started delivering pizzas. They sat down on a bench, and Alexander made his move just as a homeless person came up to the bench to do some sleeping.

He and Janessa were hungry anyway, so they went to grill some veggie burgers. Alexander proposed, and this time Janessa accepted.

They decided to elope and exchanged their vows right there in the park.

Back at Alexander's store, Janessa took a pregnancy test with a positive result.

Later that day, Benson Dahl got a phone call.

“Alexander here. You have any beds on hand? And I'll need another toilet, shower, and sink,” Alexander told him.

“Restocking right now,” said Benson. Restocking wasn't his favorite activity, but the more people starting families, the more business he got. He figured he'd be the richest man in Oasis Springs in no time.

Alexander is so sweet and awkward, he's just really adorable. I'm so happy for him and Janessa, he wanted a family for so long, I'm sure he'd be a great dad. Looking forward to your next update!  :D

I read your prologue and your challenge rules.  Wow, this is such a difficult challenge!
I like the way you incorporated both Outdoor Retreat and Get to Work into the rules while also allowing for rotational play.
It's also a pleasure to see the children of the original townies as your first eight characters.

Looking forward to more updates.
P.S. I'm sad you discontinued last year's TS4 story featuring Elaine Joy.

Chapter 10 – Stacy Lee and a New Goth

Stacy's home lot was Slipshod Mesquite. It was very bare-looking.

It was also very hot. Much as Stacy loved her periwinkle blue sweater, which had been perfect for Granite Falls, she needed something cooler.

“I have just the thing,” Olivia enthused. “And it comes with a darling hat – a Renaissance hat for a Renaissance woman.”

Stacy wasn't sure about the hat, but the dress was definitely cooler. She went to eat at Bagley's Bagels. “Do you think this hat looks weird?” she asked the clerk there, but the clerk just shrugged.

Both Alexander and Cassandra Goth had kind things to say about the hat. “It's like what Leonardo da Vinci wore,” Alexander told her.

And Cassandra got mad at the customer in her store who made a rude comment about it.

Stacy thanked Cassandra later and noticed that she seemed a bit sad. “What's the problem?” she asked.

“I'm worried about Alexander,” said Cassandra. “He had kind of a crush on Shayna Bagley, but I told him that we shouldn't marry people in our group. And now he's married someone else, and I'm afraid it's not because he's really in love but just because he wants a family.”

“He looks pretty happy to me,” Stacy said cautiously. “I don't think you should blame yourself for what others do.”

On the whole, though, Stacy was happier when she didn't have customers in the store. She knew that she needed people to come and buy things; it was just that she would rather have been working as a scientist or doctor. But in order to do that, she would have to work on some skills. Stacy decided to go fishing every morning, and to keep at it until she caught something.

She also brought a chess table into the store. It would give her something to do when she was waiting for customers to make up their minds about buying a smoke alarm.

“Hi, Alexander,” she said one afternoon.

“Gotta run,” he said. “Janessa's going into labor. She just called.” He left with an outdoor wastebasket, a grill, and a fire alarm.

"Where have you been?! I've been in labor for hours!"

“Hang on, I'll get the bassinet set up for you,” Alexander apologized.

“I want a bed, too,” Janessa called.

“On it,” called Alexander.

A few minutes later, Janessa delivered something more thrilling than pizza – a baby girl. They named her Isobel.

Alexander gave Janessa a big hug before he picked up Isobel. “You're going to be a beauty like your mama and your grandma,” he told her. She blew a spit bubble in response.

Chapter 11 – Bill Pancakes, Cassandra Goth, Peter Lee, and Another New Goth

Bill Pancakes has been moonlighting as a secret agent. He can't say anything about it – you'll have to wait for his book to come out – My Life as [Redacted].

He finally finished his children's book on the insects of Granite Falls, titled appropriately, Insects of Granite Falls.

This Jezebel butterfly is one of them.

Bill would like to re-start his relationship with Cassandra Goth, but she keeps making it clear that she wants to be just friends.

Cassandra has been spending so much time shopping that she has hardly been at her own store. But she did take time to notice how pretty the view was.

Finally she began adding to her gallery's supply of paintings. The llama is one of her favorite themes, but she's also willing to paint aliens.

So far no one has bought any of her paintings, but the easel and guitar sell well.

One day she went over to Alexander's house to help her niece Isobel become a child. Isobel has become cheerful, with the childhood aspiration to be a Whiz Kid.

Cassandra decided that she wanted a child of her own, but she knew that she didn't want a husband. She'd been flirting with Kristian Hammonds, so she invited him over one evening. She surprised him with a kiss.

And then she surprised him even more when she invited him into her tent.

The discovery that she was pregnant came with her first spasm of morning sickness.

When Cassandra told Alexander her happy news, he was shocked. “You're planning to go it alone?” he said. “Do you have any idea how hard it is to raise a child? And who is the father, anyway? Why don't you want to marry him?”

“None of your business,” Cassandra snapped.

Meanwhile, Peter Lee has been trying to make a go of things at his store Work It! There are so many things that he would rather be doing: fishing, for example.

Going for a jog, certainly.

Even cooking is less boring.

One late afternoon when he went fishing, he was suddenly struck by how beautiful the scenery was.

He decided that as soon as someone had a camera for sale, he'd take up photography as a hobby, and maybe he'd eventually add a studio to his shop. It gave him something to dream about when he was waiting for his 2 or 3 customers to make up their minds.

Back to Cassandra – she's been running around in her formal wear, possibly because it isn't as uncomfortable as her black jeans.

Waiting for the baby to come has been boring, so Cassandra has been able to practice the violin more.

Finally, she went into labor – here's Gunther Goth II!

Note: This ends the first round. I've made a few changes in my "guidelines:" sims don't have to max a skill, but rather get level 5 in two skills. And I have as an unofficial guideline that they have to start a romantic relationship on their own.

I'm happy for Cassandra not relying on a husband to get the child she wanted. I love the fact that you named him Gunther!  :D

Chapter 12 – Benson Dahl and Olivia Lewis

Benson hasn't become romantically involved with anyone yet. And why should he? He asks. He's able to do his own cooking.

His store is beginning to look quite cosy.

Not being married means that he has the freedom to go beach-combing on beautiful evenings.

And he's also able to read his friend Bill's first book, Insects of Granite Falls.

Because he's not spending any time on romance, he's been able to reach level 5 of logic and handiness.

This means he can become a scientist. He started work on Wednesday.

Benson enjoys working as a scientist a lot more than schmoozing customers and restocking toilets.
Watering the plants is fun.

He gets to exercise on pre-plague equipment.

And he gets to make cool gadgets, like this momentum conservor.

Benson showed so much aptitude that he got promoted his first day of work.

Olivia, on the other hand, has plenty of time for romance – just not any time for sleep.

And it looks like she won't have any spare time for a while.

She broke the glad news to Johnny, who was apprehensive at first but soon rejoiced.

When Olivia proposed, he accepted immediately.

They decided to get married right away.

Olivia changed the name of her store to Lewis & Zest Outfitters.

Shayna and Janessa had been asking her to put in a child mannequin for little girls.

And Cassandra wanted one for boys.

So did Gunther, who turned out to be quite self-assured.

Pregnancy gave Olivia some odd cravings. A fish caught at 3 am was a relatively normal desire.

Beetles, on the other hand, were just weird.

Johnny tried to serenade her with “On Top of Old Smokey,” but she would rather have just gotten some sleep.

At long last, she went into labor, serenading Johnny.

And here is Geoffrey Lewis, named after Johnny's most famous relative.

Such a great story.
This... "Johnny tried to serenade her with “On Top of Old Smokey,” but she would rather have just gotten some sleep." ... made me laugh out loud. Still grinning!  :D

Chapter 13 – The Bagleys and the A. Goths

The first time Armando referred to Shayna as his “ball-and-chain,” he apologized when he learned how upset she was, and she forgave him.

But the second time...

“I think it's time we hired someone to help out with the store, don't you?”

“We can't afford an employee,” said Shayna.

“Well, it would free me up from having to wipe down the counters and wash up the coffee cups,” said Armando.

“And you would do what, exactly?”

“Take more of a managerial position,” said Armando. “Figure out ways to maximize our profits. Joke around with the customers more – make them feel at home, that sort of thing.”

Shayna thought about it for a minute. It was while Armando was “joking around with the customers,” that he'd referred to her as his “ball-and-chain.” If he'd done it once, he would probably do it again.

“In other words,” she said slowly, “you want to sit on your butt and order people around. I don't think so. I think it's time for you to move on.”

So Armando moved out. Fly free, Armando!

If you want to cheer yourself up, the best way is to buy some cute clothes for your daughter.

“Ooh, and it's got little bunny ears on the hood, and the most adorable cottontail...”

“Mom!”

“Yes, dear?”

“I am not wearing this to school.”

“But you look so precious.”

Elaine climbed to the crow's nest of the pirate ship. Precious! She was the dread pirate Lainey, scourge of the seven ponds, and she would keelhaul anyone who called her precious.

Meanwhile, Alexander has been responding to consumer concerns.

“Did you know that that toybox you sold me for Gunther didn't have any toys in it?”

“I'm sorry,” said Alexander. “I'll put some out on the counter.”

Janessa liked most of the customers who came to the shop, but there was one – Charlene – that she couldn't stand. Everyone knew she was a bear from Granite Falls, and she made everyone feel tense – which wasn't good for business. When she went so far as to growl at Janessa, she told her to leave.

Back at home, Alexander was helping Isobel become a Whiz Kid.

And the Dragon Dragonfly has been known to breathe fire,” he read.

“Let's take tomorrow off,” he suggested to Janessa.

“I really don't feel like going to Granite Falls,” she said. “I've had enough of bears.”

“We can have a stay-cation,” said Alexander. “I'll do some fishing, and you can take Isobel to the park and go shopping.”

And that is what they did.

Early in the morning, Janessa went over to Olivia's to ask her to have something suitable on hand for Isobel the next day. While she was there, Geoffrey became a little boy.

“You can tell he's related to the Landgraabs,” she said, and Olivia agreed.

At the park, Isobel played chess with her mother first.

Then she took on a more experienced player, Benson Dahl. He beat her, but told her she had good aptitude for the game.

Later they went to Lewis and Zest Outfitters. Olivia had found something cute for Isobel.

And Janessa picked up a dress for herself as well.

That evening Alexander went fishing. He might not have made any money today, but his two girls were happy, and that was what mattered.

Chapter 14 – Stacy Lee and Bill Pancakes

During each round, store owners are able to add one new item to their inventory. Stacy added a refrigerator, thereby earning the gratitude of everyone who had started cooking at home.

“But why is it pink?” she was asked.

“Because that's the only color available,” Stacy answered.

One day she noticed Olivia's boy, Geoffrey playing on the monkey bars.

Stacy was beginning to feel her digital clock ticking. Olivia, Cassandra, and Shayna all had children; she didn't even have a boyfriend. And the only men who came to buy appliances were either married, elderly, or evil.

One evening she went out fishing, and met a good-looking man. He was a little older than she was, but that was okay. Unfortunately, he was evil. Stacy decided not to take the relationship further.

The next day she went to the park, where she met Waldemar Ma.

He suggested that they look at clouds together.

Stacy discovered that he was a foodie, gloomy, and childish – not great traits, but nothing that was a deal-breaker. When she discovered that he was a scientist at FutureSim, she showed him an invention she'd made. He told her she should apply for a job there.

Encouraged, Stacy began to work more on her skills. A broken radio gave her the chance to practice handiness.

And she could always ponder chess moves when business was slow.

The item that Bill Pancakes added was a comfy chair for people to sit in while they read.

He also added several copies of his second book, a self-improvement manual titled How to be Just Like Me.

Bill was beginning to learn how to write even when there was a possibility that a fight might break out among his customers. He wrote his third book, My Life as [Redacted] was written almost entirely while his store was open.

To get peace and quiet, Bill went fishing. Sometimes he actually caught something other than weeds.

Chapter 15 – The C. Goths and Peter Lee

No one in Oasis Springs knows whether Cassandra is checking up on them or whether she's a shopaholic.

“She did buy a refrigerator from me,” Stacy Lee pointed out.

“That doesn't mean much,” said her brother Peter. “Everyone who's cooking at home will be buying a refrigerator now that you have them. But she came into my shop three times without buying anything until finally she picked up a houseplant when I said 'Just looking?' I think she's keeping tabs on us.”

Cassandra could have told them it was an addiction to shopping. She barely had enough money to keep her store going and to pay her bills at home, but she still had to stop by everyone's store every day and see what they had available. She understood why she was doing it -- she was trying to fill the hole in her heart left by grief over losing her parents and her home in Willow Creek. But she had to stop. Money was so tight that she was playing for tips while she waited for her customers to make up their minds.

It was so tight that she was putting Gunther's scribbles up for sale (although she was also very proud of him when one of them actually sold).

It wasn't easy being a single parent. Over the weekend, Gunther had to come to work with her. He didn't mind. He enjoyed playing with his dinosaur. ("Triceratops, mommy!")

And when she got him an art table, he enjoyed drawing on that, too.

Some nights, Cassandra was so tired, she had to drag herself home from the store.

But she finally had enough money to get Gunther an extra set of clothes.

And when he gave her a big hug, she felt like all her struggles were worth it.

Peter Lee still enjoys fishing and photography more than he does running a store.

He gets as much pleasure out of looking at the scenery as he does catching a fish.

He's started putting his photographs up for sale, and the next time he sees Cassandra, he's going to ask her to put a camera in her store that he can buy.
