Rachel's POV"No, no! No I will not do that." I giggled.
Emma looked at me suggestively.
"Okay, yeah! Yeah, I'll talk to you later."
I hung up the phone and grabbed a strawberry and an apple.
"So, you two have been talking on the phone a lot." Emma said.
"Yeah, sorry about that."
"No need to apologize, so things are getting serious?"
"I don't know, we haven't really talked about it. We flirt back and forth, but we haven't really had that moment."
"It'll come, trust me."
"Do you want one?" I asked.
"Sure!"
Our house apparently had a third floor that we never knew about. We turned it into a activities and workout space.
"So, chess. It's a simple game to learn with a few rules." Dad said.
"I still don't understand it." I said scratching my head.
"It's simple." He said.
I watched him try to show me how to play the game, he patiently told me the rules.
"I can't get this."
"Yes you can."
"No I can't!"
He looked at me and the room got serious.
"Look, you and I both know my time is limited. I want to spend the time I have left teaching you the important things in life."
"Dad, chess isn't an important thing."
"No, but learning that you aren't a quitter is. From the moment your father and I adopted you, you have been the smartest, most talented little girl ever. When things get tough you tend to hesitate and think you can't do it though. Baby girl, you can do anything you put your mind too, you just have to believe in yourself."
"And now I'm crying." I said wiping my eyes.
He stood up and hugged me tightly.
...
"Do you think there is a heaven?"
Ethan looked at me, "I don't know."
I sighed.
"I believe there is a place where our loved ones go to wait for us. Once we die we join them and live happily ever after." He said.
"So there is no heaven, but some place we go?"
"I know it's weird, but this whole heaven and hell thing seems fake. I mean your whole life they tell you to be good so you can go to heaven, but be mean and evil and you are going to hell. But whose to say where we go? So I like to believe there there is an in-between for people who don't believe in heaven or hell."
I looked up at the sky.
"What brought this on?" He asked.
I sighed, "Just thinking of how my parents are getting older and so is my aunt and uncle."
He smiled at me.
"That cloud is shaped like a dog."
I laughed.
"Look at that one!"
"Looks like a horse." I giggled.
"We should get off the ground."
He stood up and helped me to my feet, I tripped and almost knocked us both back on the ground.
"Sorry." I laughed.
"It's perfectly fine."
"Thanks for inviting me over." Ethan said.
"No problem, figured a night swim would be a good idea."
"Yeah, no one can get hurt here."
"Have you met me?" I giggled.
"I have, and I find your clumsiness adorable."
I blushed.
"Look, that kid is picking his nose!" I pointed out.
"Gross."
"Five bucks says he eats it."
Moments later he put his finger in his mouth.
"Gross!" Ethan laughed.
He looked back up and stared in my eyes.
"You have beautiful brown eyes."
I shrugged, "I know."
He chuckled, "Someone is sure of themselves."
I rolled my eyes. I rolled my neck and rubbed it.
"Your back bothering you?" He asked.
"A little."
"I've been told I give the best massages."
"Do you?"
"Yeah, you mind?"
"No."
"Wow, yeah you are pretty good at that." I said.
"Told you."
We spent the rest of the night laughing and flirting back and forth.
