Get To Work Guides and Reference Links

Quick Links:
Guide Links
Reference Links

The first one is now available, though it's a bit rough and will see improvement in coming days. It was a big one to tackle first, and I'm grateful I got a bit of a head start. I broke it into four parts because of the sheer amount of information and a desire to go into details on other pages. This lets me please those folks who just want the introduction page that covers the basics.

Guide Links

Retail
Opening a Business
Managing Employees
Customers & Sales
Retail Perks

Active careers
Detective
Doctor
Scientist

Skills
Baking
Photography

Miscellaneous
Aliens
Geodes Collection
Sixam, the Hidden World of Get to Work

You may use this thread or my suggestions board to provide feedback on the guides for this Expansion. Thank you for taking the time if you do. I'll update this post with all GTW guides as I continue the process. Next will be Scientists, then Doctor, and Detective. I'll probably cover Aliens last, but I'm known to do things on a whim depending how I feel :)

Thanks for the guide on retail so early Carl. I had a good two days of experience before I came looking for a guide on it to see if there are some things I could do for maximizing my returns. Totally missed on some basic ideas too (high environment and confident moodlets, duh Mark, you can manufacture those with the right stuff) that will put my little, massive sales store into even more massive sales numbers. Their bank account thanks you.

I did notice one little trick that I think would be pretty helpful to others who like to make stores of high end products with a high mark-up that can really take advantage of the "Sure Sale" perk. Normally, you have one use of it every four hours per store. However, if you have multiple family members working your store, and you synchronize queuing up the social with both (or more) of them before any one of them completes it, you can have multiple shots of it every four hours. I hope that makes sense. My husband and wife team like to get their day started off with sure sales on the first couple of customers. First time I used it, it turned into a $30k violin sale and a $16k home-made painting sale. Good stuff right there. ;)

Thanks for the tip on the sure sale interaction. I will be sure to edit that one to make sure folks are aware the cooldown isn't shared among household members! As for the guide, glad I could help :D

I added Scientist to the guide just now... I will have a lot of housekeeping to do with this one. Careers, the GTW gateway, and a number of other pages need updates. I'm going to try to finish the new careers first to be more efficient.

Well, the cooldown is supposed to be shared between them for only one shot of "sure sale" every four hours for the store as a whole.

However, if you queue it up with Sim A on Customer A with the game paused, and at the same time also queued up on Customer B with Sim B; they will both fire off as long as both "sure sale" interactions are started before either one of them ends.

I have had one of the conversations get cancelled out by another sim saying goodbye, and that sim didn't get to use "sure sale" again for another four hours. They have to be timed so they happen together.

Sorry for not explaining it better the first time. It is definitely a trick of the system and takes timing to pull off.

In the "Get to Work" section of the forum I posted pictures and some information of my Sim's experience with his UFO abduction, pregnancy, and the alien baby he birthed.

Can't wait 'til you finish the rest of guides regarding the newest expansion! The retail and scientist ones have been very helpful and I thank you.  :)

@MeestorMark  Thanks for the further clarification. I see I misunderstood :) I will focus on editing next time I'm working, because there are about 15 total pages to edit right now :O

@snackrafice I saw that :D Thanks for giving me the go-ahead to look at your info for when I do Aliens. I am sure that one will be high priority once the other two active careers are done.

Today I just published Sixam, the Hidden World of Get to Work

A slightly off topic comment, but when I first saw 'Sixam' I read it as 'six am', the hour many sims (and people) have to get up in order to 'get to work' on time.  ;D

@HelenP I thought the same thing :)

Just updated to include Photography. Next I will do the Doctor, but needed a longer stretch to work on something more involved like that. This one is just to have something to show for the day :)

Detective is done. Thanks to @Nutella for saving me some work in sharing the hours/pay/unlocks. I probably wouldn't have put all the jail objects down, but her thorough list was hard to pass up. Next is Doctor, of course, but I will likely do editing of other pages for a couple of days before I get to that one. Need to spruce up the careers gateway, update the GTW main page so that it includes a solid rundown of features, and add to the gardening and collecting sections. Lots to do! Better get to work!  ::)

actually you don't need multiple sims to do this. You can do the pause and queued sure sales on all your costumers on the lot with just one sim. I tested it with my lone sim and pause before queuing sure sales to all customer and all sure sales were successful.

@Carl, I just wanted to express my appreciation for all the energy and effort that you and your team devote to keeping this forum community such a wonderful place to visit.
I am so amazed at how quickly you've compiled, edited, and posted your GTW guides.
Do you drink moodlet solvers to do away with the need for sleep?

Seriously, though, thank you for the fantastic GTW guides!

Thanks for the clarification on sure sale. I edited that into the retail perks page, and I'm sure some players will enjoy abusing that :)

@oshizu Thank you for the kind words. This is my 12th expansion, so I've learned to manage my time some without burning myself out. Plus i have my process, so it's not as hard as it used to be. With folks sharing info with me, it gets even easier!

Regarding retail - I'm doing a bakery and originally was using the standard display cases.  I had one freezer case (which Sims can buy directly from the case without you having to ring them up.

As my plan was to bake replacement stock, it made more sense to get rid of the standard cases and put all the stock in freezer cases.  This means no restocking time spent.  Just spending time baking.

But here's the unexpected benefit.  About half the time, when a sim buys something from the freezer case, they will then set the item on a counter or even on the floor.  You can then immediately grab and drag it back into the freezer case to be sold again!

I have one employee set to cleaning.  When nothing needs cleaned, she's chatting to customers working on sales.  Now that I don't have to pull her off to restock, her time is better spent.  Also, since I restock my own baked goods that sell, my overhead is MUCH lower (and even lower when I can resell the same item!).

@Dellena I just noticed that special case myself. I need to edit it in, so will do so as soon as possible. I just now finished Doctor and added it to the list.

Your post reminds me why I want to do some special pages on specific types of shops. Thanks for sharing. I might just add one page to the retail guide and section it off for bakeries and other types, just depends how it looks when I go to start :)

I am hoping they will release a patch to fix employees up some, and am afraid to do too much editing until then for fear of wasting my time...
