Hysterical at work?
« on: February 28, 2015, 02:43:40 AM »
My Sim is a comedian, and normally I have to watch his mood very closely to make sure he doesn't become hysterical, since  I've heard that Sims can die from doing something funny while hysterical.  Does anyone know whether it's safe to to go to work hysterical (and not do anything funny)?

I've not had this happen, but I've found that very inspired and very focused moods drop to inspired and focused almost as soon as a sim leaves the house. As long as you have him work normally and avoid any options that increase playfulness, he should be safe.

Thanks for your reply.  I'm able to get enough positive moodlets on my Sim so that he stays hysterical for most of the shift, so I just want to be sure he won't die.

I don't know about the emotional deaths, but one of my sims came home from work early so she could die of old age.  Being at work may not be enough to protect from death by laughter.  However, I've had sims stay at the emotional extremes for a long time before dying, while others go quickly.  It could just be a gamble.  That said, using the work hard interaction may help drop out of the hysterical state faster while taking advantage of the mood for even better performance game.  The gain could be worth the risk.

If I was playing in a file that I allow restarting after bad events, I'd just save before sending the sim to work and see what happens.

I think he will be safe as long as he doesn't get a chance card which makes him go over the top. It's very easy for a hysterical sim to die.

I'll try my best to avoid choosing outcomes of events that might end up with a funny result, but I know they're not always predictable.  I will probably risk it anyway though, since I want to send him to work at his best.  The way I've been piling moodlets on him before work has been that I do the funny ones, or +playful ones, fairly early in the routine, before he gets hysterical.  I still put some happy ones on after that.  I haven't heard any mention of avoiding things that make a hysterical Sim happy, so I hope that's not risky as well.

I just had a Sim die from laughter while drinking tea.  It seems like being hysterical is dangerous even if your Sim isn't doing anything funny :(  I'm not a fan.

DrChillGood over at ModTheSims has made a mod called "Emotions Don't Kill" if you're interested.

Thanks for the information, but I don't normally use mods since I mostly play challenges.  I don't want to have to worry about turning them on and off.

It is a pretty funny image when I imagine my Sim laughing hysterically while drinking tea.

I believe there is a timer, of sorts, that once a sim is hysterical you have a certain amount of time to calm them down before Grim comes knocking. I think of all the emotions this one is an easy way to kill off a sim, once hysterical you just sit back and watch. Total bummer though if you actually weren't trying for a death!

I actually killed this same Sim twice from being hysterical, and one of the times he was only hysterical for about one Sim minute before he started dying.  He was telling jokes at the time, and I tried to remove environment score and buffs immediately but it couldn't be stopped, and he still died even though he was only very playful when he died.  The other time he was hysterical for less than an hour, and was trying to only do safe things like drink tea.  The strange thing is I've had Sims hysterical in previous games for a lot longer.  Also, in both cases with the recent Sim, it was the very first time he had ever gotten hysterical.  I wonder if they improved the chance of emotional death in the last patch, or if I was just unlucky.

@ClayMask , perhaps it ties in with your sims traits? If he is a goofball etc then it could be that his emotional state takes longer to calm down? I'm not sure, all I know for sure is that if I don't want a sim to die from hysteria, I hit the pause as soon as they become hysterical and they either go straight to bed and sleep it off or run for a mirror to 'calm down'. Doing a neutral activity that does not reduce their emotional state won't save their life. If you add more 'positive' moodlets on top of a very happy sim (like walking into a well decorated room with a fire etc or even eating and drinking) then that can tip the sim into hysterical as well and kill them that way.

I don't think it has to do with his traits.  He's not a goofball, or anything else that I think would affect it.  I was pretty surprised at both deaths, since the first one happened immediately after he became hysterical, and with the second one he never even did anything funny in a mood other than very playful.  It's good to know that doing funny things while hysterical isn't what triggers the death, and being hysterical should just be avoided.
