Warning! Items from moved in family may not work.
« on: February 22, 2015, 07:11:36 PM »
Ok, was having several different problems.  I moved in the Landgraab family and built my nice, new, large, dynasty house using their funds and household items plus a few of my own.  My frig would not allow me to place items in it nor remove items from it.  So I tried replacing it with a lower level frig.  Everything worked.  Then I tried to buy books with their computers and I could not buy anything. I tried clicking on the bookshelves, (theirs), and again could not buy anything.  I then tried clicking on the child's bookshelf I had recently bought and could buy books, seeds, etc.  So, I believe when you move in another families' household goods they will not work the same as ones you bought yourself.  I replaced one of the Landgraab's bookcases and voila, can now buy from that.  This may be a bug but I don't know if it is.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

What about purchasing from a bookcase?

Sorry, Dellena, was modifying my note while you were responding.  I think it's a move in bug.

I would suggest that if you find this bug again, save and exit.  Then clear your cache files and reload the game and see if the items are now useful.  I'm curious if that would have fixed it.

I've had it happen several times myself. The game pretty much doesn't recognize what the items are, to the point where "Buy item X because you don't have one" whims will fire off. The first time it happened was in fact the first game I played.

Save/exit/reload doesn't do anything. Never bothered with clearing cache, now I just make sure that the 'sell household items' option is selected and use the cash to buy new.

Check your Sims 4 folder for lastexception.txt files (they often have numbers attached).  These mean something has gotten messed up.  I see them whenever I encounter the 'can't cook' bug.  This is where clearing the cache files comes in.  Something gets hung up and has to be fixed.  A lot less expensive, in game, to clear the cache files and be able to continue using your existing appliances than paying for replacements.

True, but I delete these along with cache files.  My moved in inventory items still needed to be replaced.

Tried this.  Did not fix it.

Can you step me through exactly how this happens?  It sounds like you've moved in someone from another household and they have items in the family inventory but I didn't think that was possible.  So I'm a little confused.

Sure.  My poverty stricken dynasty restart was living in a tent and I got tired of it.  I made friends with Nancy Landgraab and moved them in.  I opted to keep their furniture and not sell it all.  Laziness on my part as I did not want to have to go through the process of selecting all new furniture.  Used their funds to build the shell and moved their stuff in.  Bought a few items of my own, namely kids furniture.  I wanted to buy some skill books and clicked on one of the computers.  No "purchase" showed up.  I clicked on each of the various book cases.  Nothing allowed there.  I did "repair game" and cleaned my cache files.  Didn't help.  I went back in and clicked on the child's bookcase I had bought and was able to purchase.  Tried the Landgraab bookcases again and still no ability to shop.  I replaced one bookcase and tried again and with a new bookcase I could purchase.  Did the same with the computers, and at first it was no purchase but when I replaced them I could purchase.

I had already done this replacing with the refrigerator because I was not able to place items in it nor remove them.  I thought that was a variation on the cooking bug at the time, and at that time I replaced their top of the line frig with a lesser model.  Everything worked with the new frig and I assumed it was an issue with the model of frig, just as there have been issues with beds.  It was days of play later when I wanted to buy books and couldn't.  I have since replaced my lesser model frig with a high end frig.  I really think it is a matter of retaining household items that have actions included in them, like "purchase", that caused the problem.  It's weird because you could do everything else with the computers and book cases, you just couldn't purchase with them.

You should copy and paste all of that in the official bug thread.  Gives a lot of details on the error which could help them out. :)
