No more 50% extra selling masterpiece paintings to art gallery?
« on: January 16, 2015, 05:31:04 PM »
Hi Carl,

I don't know if it is just my current game, but I am not getting any bonus for selling masterpieces to the Art Gallery.  I've noticed it since the latest update, but I have to admit I didn't check the prices before the update.  Excellent paintings still get a bonus.  I know you have quite a lot of changes to make due to the ep but hopefully you or someone else can check it out.

I'll try and give it a shot as soon as I'm able. Definitely don't want misinformation there, but that seemed like a reasonable bonus... I'm hoping it's not a situation where something was broken by the patch and I'm going to end up changing it twice heheh.

What I've noticed is that I don't get a bonus for selling a masterpiece to an art gallery, but I do get one for selling a regular painting to an art gallery. Also, when I have a painter who is no longer employed as a painter, she can only sell regular paintings to collectors and masterpieces to art galleries.

Masterpieces are weird. I think the game automatically builds in the fact that they have already shot up in value when you mouse over how much it's worth. Put your cursor over a non Masterpiece painting and say it's 1000. Sell it and you get the Art Gallery bonus on top of that, but if it's a Masterpiece worth 8000, then that is what you get. No bonus. And that did not start with this last patch. It's been that way for awhile.

Yep, you only get to sell normal paintings to the Art Gallery if you're employed as a painter at that time. If you quit the job, then you no longer get to sell them to the gallery. But Masterpieces are sold to the Art Gallery regardless of whether you're employed as a painter or not.

This makes sense and seems intentional. I'm busy today with tennis and some other stuff but will try to get editing in ASAP. New page for the collecting section will be out tomorrow :)

I got this edited in just now and gave HelenP credit for making sure I was aware. I moved Art Lover up in the list of recommended Traits for Painters as well, because being able to look at a piece of Art at any time and get Inspired is more powerful than the random buffs given by Creative.

@Carl, I would not recommend the Art Lover trait for a would-be painter, because Art Lovers apparently don't get any fun from painting, whereas everyone else gets a 1 boost to their fun level. There are many other ways to get inspired -- the light from the first promotion as a painter has an emotional aura, for example. My personal choice is the lump of clay from the kid's section. It costs $150 and gives a 4 hour inspired moodlet.

Wow. Loving something sure has its drawbacks. I hadn't noticed this quirk! Traits do more than meets the eye in this game...so, I'd recommend this trait for all other creative endeavours except painting. Thanks. I wonder if this is intentional?

Yeah, there are a lot of ways to get inspired. I did find that interaction quite fast, though. Sadly I won't talk much about reward lamps, as after this year is up I'd be having to do a lot of editing when they aren't available to new players anymore.

Edit: I moved Art lover back down under Creative - bummer to have to do that, given it seems buggy. I hope they'll make it so that Sims who like things can have fun doing them. Gardening should be fun for certain Sims, for example :)

Last time I checked, Art Lovers do get fun from painting. My Painter sim was an art lover and that was her primary source of fun, especially because she didn't have any sort of electronic in her house. ::)

I'll have to test this in my game to determine what I'll ultimately put in the guide. I want to recommend it as the best trait, but have seen this elsewhere on the official forum that they don't get fun. Thanks for stimulating conversation on it. Tomorrow, I'll test with a couple of Sims and see what's up. Maybe there is some other trait that prevents it... but what strikes me is that many of these traits don't do a lot outside of social interactions, at least on the surface. I've yet to dig around and look for bonuses they may bring up that are not obvious. The random buffs don't happen very often, so they aren't nearly as useful as the bonus trait you get for selecting an aspiration. I can't even keep a lazy bonus for sitting in a chair. So, I saw Art Lover as one of the best traits in the game since most rooms have paintings. Bam, inspired, whereever you are and easily stacked with the other means in order to get Very Inspired.

In all my games, art lover DO get fun while painting.  I do find art lover admiring art interaction annoying, sometimes it takes 3 times of admire art just to get that bonus.

I've never had that happen, but as this and many other threads show, all kinds of different experiences happen in our games. I'm glad we at least concur on the masterpiece thing :D

@Carl  I was wrong about the art lover trait, it doesn't give you fun while painting.  It is the "Creative" trait that gives fun during painting.  I always paired creative and art lover on my sim, hence I thought it was art lover that is doing the trick.

Me too on using both traits, so it was unclear for me as well! I'll have some editing to do but this is great information for both the traits page and the painting page. Thanks for doing the testing. I am working on Rewards today and hadn't got to this yet.
