2015 World Ranking
« on: December 13, 2014, 01:27:30 PM »
2015 World Ranking

The World Ranking has two components: a Wins component (50%) and a Participation component (50%). It's a simple ranking system, but still an effective measure of player caliber. To receive a World Ranking a player must finish at least three Tournament challenges. So, let me walk everyone through how one's World Ranking is determined.

Each of the 2015 Tournament challenges has a column in my Tournament spreadsheet. Individual cells in the challenge columns are filled with a ratio of how many players a player beat in that challenge in relation to how many could have been beaten. Let’s take a look at Joe Blow and how Joe did in the first 3 events of the season. Let’s say the field size of event #1 is 25 and Joe finished 8th. That means he beat 17 out of a possible 24 players (I don’t count Joe), so Joe’s event #1 cell is =17/24. The 2nd event was larger, 30 players, and Joe did even better and finished 6th. Event #2’s cell is =24/29. Event #3’s participation dropped to 25, but Joe pulled out all the stops and won it. Event #3’s cell is =24/24.

Down the spreadsheet after all the individual challenge columns is the “Sum of Wins” column. This is just the total of all of one’s ratios in each challenge column. So, with the first 3 events in the bag, Joe’s “Sum of Wins” column is 2.537.

Next comes the “# of Events” column which is a simple count function for all challenge columns. Joe has only participated in three 2015 Tournament Challenges so far, so his “# of Events” figure is 3. The “Sum of Wins” is then divided by the “# of Events” for an “Ave of Wins” column:

2.537 / 3 = .845.

Now it’s time to add the weight for the Wins component. The Wins weight for everyone is 50% of final score, so we take .845 X .50 and get .422 That’s Joe’s final Wins component.

The second component is Participation. Everyone who submits a score in a challenge receives a 10% participation bonus figured into their ranking. So, there’s a 10-event cap at which point a player receives 100% of the Participation component. If someone participates in more than 10 Tournament challenges, then a player’s best finishes will be used to compute the World Ranking.

Okay, so Joe Blow has participated in the first 3 events. His participation bonus is .30 (10% per event). Participation counts for 50% of final score, so we then take .30 X .50 to get Joe’s final Participation component of .15.

Joe’s World Ranking is his final Wins component + his final Participation component:

.422 + .15 = .572

The World Ranking is now live and official with three events in the bag. Grats to ClayMask on an incredible start to this season. Will she continue her streak? Will Lena put the pedal to the metal and defend her crown? Or will a newcomer rise up and win it all? Time will tell.

Thank you.

I noticed that some people with only two scores had a rank assigned to them, and some did not.

Sorry, nevermind.  The ones I was thinking had only two scores actually had DNFs.

I just updated the world ranking now that Baby Boomer has closed. Wow! Changes all over the place. Lena squeaked by ClayMask for the top spot, but look at the small margin. It's so close! And as a fan sitting on the sidelines let me tell you it's not a two horse race by any stretch - lots of players are in the running. And lots of players were added to the world ranking just now since Baby Boomer was their 3rd event. Exciting stuff! So much is up in the air - especially once players have their 10 events in the books and I only then choose their top 10 for the ranking. When players have the privilege of dropping bad performances it makes a huge difference.

I made a mistake and did not realize oshizu had completed three events - so she now has been added to the World Ranking. Sorry, oshizu!  :D

I've been feeling embarrassed about your public apology and haven't replied to your post.
Thank you so much!  Seeing my name there inspires me to....erm, well, it's just a nice feeling to be there with the rest of the challengers!   ;D

I've noticed that when there is a tie, the person who reported their score later is listed on the leadberboard below the person who reported their score earlier.  How are ties on an event scored in the world ranking?

Hi ClayMask - there actually are no ties. The spreadsheet carries everything out to who knows how long - 10 places or something. It's just that I do not feel like carrying the World Ranking out more than 3 places after the decimal.

------------

EDIT: Okay, my bad - it's early and I am still waking up. :) I did not understand your question at first. Okay...let me try and explain how I do this. I copy the leaderboard after I close an event and paste it to a text document to print out. So, now it's sitting next to me and I am ready to work on the World Ranking. I start at that bottom. It may be a DNF or it may be someone who did turn in a score. Whatever the case they get a 0 because they beat 0 players. If the player above them has the same score - DNF or otherwise - they get a 0 as well because they did not beat anyone. I mean to beat someone means your score has to be better, right? :)

Let's say the total field size is 20. Then the best the winner is going to get is 19. They can only beat 19 other players, so I would put a 19 by their name. Their ratio for that event in the spreadsheet would be 19/19. No let's say you and Lena both finish right under the winner and are tied for 2nd. Neither one of you beat each other - your scores in the event are the same, so it's entered in the spreadsheet not as 18/19, but 17/19.

What I mean is if two players tie in an event, are they recorded as scoring the same on the event when it's entered into the world ranking, or is the one who reported their score in the event listed as a higher place since they are higher on the leaderboard?

Yeah if there is a tie in an event, you're right - the player who reported first will be listed above on the leaderboard. I have always done that. Just personal preference I guess. But, as I hope I explained above it makes no impact on the WR - their ratios entered into their individual cells would be the same for that event.

Congratulations Tixxis on moving to third place in the ranks.  I'm sure your ranking score will jump up a lot more once you can drop your lowest score.
