Chapter Forty Two
Hey Kett, you even wish there were more board games to play?Kett: What's a board game?
You know, a game that's played on a board, like chess...Kett: There's poker in the backyard.
No, that's a card game.Kett: Oh. Well why's it matter, chess is fun.
BECAUSE I'VE BEEN WATCHING YOUR FAMILY PLAY IT FOR SIX GENERATIONS.Nick: No, don't look away from the table, pay attention! You should be planning your next move while the other player is moving, not after they've moved.
Nirian: Well how will I know where to move if they haven't moved yet?
Nick: By thinking about what you would do in their situation, and then planning how to best destroy that.
You know, I get the distinct feeling you treat life like a chess game...Nick: Only when I'm dealing with people I don't like.
Don't you have to go to work?Kett: I'll be leaving soon, I've got another hour.
Um... that means your daughter needs to go to school NOW.Nirian: Oh yeah! First day of school, yay!
I think I can safely say I never had that reaction. How was school?Nirian: It was fun! One of our teachers had class outside, we all got to sit on the grass while she read a book.
Welcome to old age Ray. How do you feel?Ray: Sore... So glad I've got a desk job, trying to walk the beat now would be killer.
Nick: Oh hey Watcher. Me and the old man are working on getting back into shape... he let himself go for a while there.
Kell: You do realize you're almost as old as me?
Nick: But not quite old man.
Kell: Smart ass kid.
Nick: Love you dad.
Kell: Love you too son.
Nirian: Hey Watcher, if I know all this stuff by heart already and I can prove it in class, why does the teacher make me do the homework that's just more practice?
Um... You're going to have to ask someone wiser in the ways of schooling, because I never figured that one out. Maybe to build a work ethic, though if that's the case I can say it doesn't always work.Say, how are your aspirations going anyways?Nirian: I'm done with Whiz Kid! That was easy. I'm almost done with the exercise one. Can we do the social one next? I'd like to hang out with kids my age.
Um... lemme ask your mom.Hey guys. Looks like you worked out your differences.Ray: Yeah, she's an alright gal. My son could have done better, but I suppose she'll do.
Myra: Hey! With a dad like you he's lucky to have gotten me!
Um...Ray: *laughing* We're messing around watcher. What's up?
Oh right. Myra, your daughter would like to go to the park to meet some kids. I thought you'd want to go as well, keep an eye on her.Myra: Of course! I'll go get ready.
Ray: Why don't we bring the whole family? We're running low on angelfish anyways.
Alright, I'll leave you guys to it... I'm off to keep an eye on Nirian.Myra: Let us know if you need us.
