Is there a way to put my another active family as my old man's step son?

I've been playing "Harwood Clay" in Twinbrook and he is my main sim. As it's known in his story, he has only a few days until death. He  purchased an old lamp with his lifetime points and he's done 'Free the Genie" and now the Genie is added to my active family but you know they're still best friends each other. Before Harwood goes die, I want to adopt the Genie as Harwood's son but have no idea how to do. I mean I want to give the Genie, the surname,"Clay" as his step son.  Will it be possible?  Harwood looks so lonely with no family.  His Bestfriend Forever, Juan Darer already has passed away. Thanks for reading.

There isn't a way to make the genie a family member, short of using mods. He can have a friend until his death, but the game won't consider them family ever.

Alright then.

In the game, the only was to inherit stepchildren is to marry someone with a child or children from a different parent. If you get a genie from a lamp, they're sims with no parents, so Harwood wouldn't be able to make the genie his stepchild because the genie has no parents that he could marry to get a stepchild from.

Adopted children are considered the same as biological children in the game, but there is no way to adopt an adult sim that lives with them already. The most you can do is get a mod that allows you to alter family trees, and set the genie as Harwood's child.

Otherwise, the only possibility is for him to die with a best friend and roommate to live on.

Once he is part of your family, can you change his name to the same sure name at the city hall?

Yes, you should be able to change the genie's last name to Clay at City Hall during business hours.  The genie won't show up in the family tree or be adopted, but Harwood Clay's name will live on.
