Fishing Guide

I know this is a minor thing but I sometimes catch Sturgeon in the Forgotten Grotto and I noticed it wasn't mentioned in the guide. Hope I helped a little.

Here are the list of fishes by size, which may be helpful when selecting a bait:

Small
Kissing Gourami - no bait listed, required level 3
Tetra - no bait listed, no required level
Red Tailed Shark - requires small fish bait, required level 5
Pirahna - requires medium fish bait, required level 5
Perch - no bait listed, no required level
Minnow - no bait listed, no required level
Guppy - no bait listed, no required level
Betta - no bait listed, required level 3
Angelfish - no bait listed, required level 3
Goldfish - no bait listed no required level

Medium

Treefish - no bait listed, no required level
Batfish - no bait listed, no required level
Trout - no bait listed, required level 2
Tilapia - no bait listed, required level 4
Rainbow Fish - required bait disabled, required level 6
Koi - no bait listed, required level 2
Catfish - requires organic bait, required level 4
Bass - no bait listed, requires level 2
Anglerfish - requires medium fish bait, required level 7

Large
Salmon - no bait listed, requires level 3
Wolf Eel - requires frog bait, required level 5
Sturgeon - no bait listed, requires level 7

There are also modifier values assigned to baits, but I don't know whether they modify effective skill level, fish size or fish value in some other way. If it matters, then medium fish would be the best fish to use as bait as it has the highest modifier of 3, trash has a modifier of -2 being the worst.

In theory, there is a use for trash as bait.

Remember those fishes that are common at lower levels, but become exceedingly rare when you reach level 10? Use trash as bait and your effective Fishing levels drops, increasing your chances of catching them.

@ DarkWalker, that's a really good tip. I'm so 'over' fishing for hours and hours to get a 'low' level fish to complete the collection.

It looks like I might need to add a new column to the table indicating size now that Annika has shared the specifics. Thanks for that. It seems I already have the right baits for the fish listed (off the top of my head, but I'll make sure).

On this trash for bait idea, does it include trash fruit or only trash from the can? I've never carried around trash nor expected it to come up as a bait. The fruit would be the best way to get lots of it in order to catch a fish. I suppose you could stock up on actual trash by stopping the empty trash can interaction repeatedly and dragging it to the inventory (if possible).

I think you can only use trash fruit. I don't know how to use actual trash to fish with...?!? I haven't seen it as a bait option.

@DarkWalker, using trash fruit as bait to catch the lower level fish is genius! Great idea!

In the past, the only way I could catch goldfish, guppies, etc. with a Level 10 fisherman was by simply not using bait.

@lindsaysoderberg
Well, you could also try to fish with almost any negative emotion. Except for Embarrassed, all of them lower effective levels of mental skills (which should include fishing), and some can be done more or less on command, specially if you have a second sim that got one of the emotion-effecting traits; weaponized joke, for example, should override nearly any positive emotion with Dazed for three hours.

@DarkWalker, I'm glad we have someone like you here who understands the code and can figure this stuff out for us. It is very helpful. Thank  you! A few of my sims have Weaponized Joke, although I have to admit, I've been afraid to use them even since one of my sims died from laughter, or hysteria, as I learned it's called, but her little "circle action thing" on the side actually read: "dying from laughter," which is pretty funny in itself.

Now that I understand better how to prevent "death by joke," I'll be using it to effect the "dazed" emotion as needed. Thanks, again!

Haha yeah I was really doubting being able to use actual trash. Until the bug? is fixed, I'll tell people this stuff on both fishing and gardening guides. Thanks, folks!

I've found that a good place to catch tilapia is behind the gym in Oasis Springs. I've also started catching exotic goldfish (came with the Spa Pack) in the rainbow falls area of Sylvan Glade.

The three new fish can also be caught in the little stream at the front of Oasis Park as well as the pond in Sylvan Glade.

@Playalot thanks, due to illness I hadn't searched for them yet. I was hoping they'd be available in the world without needing to just buy them from the aquarium. I'll be sure to mess with the fish list soon and get them in :)

No problem. The new fish can be caught just about anywhere but that little stream seemed to be the most reliable. Actually, most of the fish can be caught just about anywhere now.
