Why all the changes in Sims 4?
« on: September 19, 2014, 02:59:54 AM »
To begin this is not a bashing and bashings aren't allowed on this forum so please do not reply with it. If you want to discuss the difference between Sims 3 and 4 there is a topic located here.

The point behind this post is to help to explain some of the changes from my knowledge of things (I went to school for graphic designing and did some gaming classes as I was debating doing video game development). I wasn't going to post this but my partner encouraged me to after I explained some of these things to him.

Some of the common things I've seen around here and the web...

Lack of the Color Wheel
A color wheel has about 16.77216 million colors available on it. Each time you used one shade different on an item the game had to create a new item in it's files in order to produce it every time you saw it. This is why after playing a game or large families you began to see stutters. There was nothing the game developers could do about this.

Cartoon Looks
It is actually common for game designers to use a cartoon look to their games. The reason behind this is it let's the game remain timeless and not look outdated over time. I know that sims are a simulation of real life but take a look back at anyone in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, and 90's we look dated too (even though I too rocked the spikey hair and neon clothes in the 80s). This is a good thing from a development standpoint that means they are thinking of long term for the game and won't hit the limit of looks and ideas any time soon.

Instanced Areas
As you know loading all around you takes more and more the more of a world your loading (I think this one was general knowledge). The parts that complicate it was the amount of people and having them all function while still functioning your sim and family. Sims can become stuck or glitch and it will kill your game. Things left on cause more and more to processes. There is also a lot of coding and weighing when you try to balance which of these sims show up in public lots when you visit and which continue with their random day to day things. When you jumped in a car and traveled to a location the game had to process every sim you passed along the way. Although it may seem silly to have to "travel to your neighbors" it's so that wherever you are is all the game cares about making you #1. There is actually a good amount of things to do on the areas so I think they found a good balance. From my experience this was also a trade off to allow you in the future the possibility to travel to any expansion later released by using the map (I can not confirm if that's what they will do as they haven't released one but I see that as a definite potential). The layout and design of the map shows the ease adding new areas would be with the circles. So you would no longer be stuck to only living and visiting places in your world down the road.

Lack of Pool and Terrain building *We have pools now*
There is a reason I placed this after instanced areas. Although many don't know it when you have a game even if all you can see is the ground if it has a lower area it must process that area (on the off chance it might be sloped or modified). This means if floor to sky its 300ft the game must process that but if you have 300ft down you can go as well then the game must watch 600ft of space. This adds to a lot of accounting for things. Now pools add moving water and usable items and a whole slew of objects/movements that must interact differently. A tub you are stationary a pool you have a set of moving objects and actions happening. With Sims 4 there is multitasking which would say you should be able to in a pool as well. I am sure that added tons of obstacles coding and effect wise.

I hope some of explanations helped to clear up things for some people. If anyone has anything they'd like to see if I have an answer for or need more clarification or examples I can try my best to help.

Regarding Instanced Areas - I know I've seen one of the SimGurus tweet a while back that there's nothing stopping them from expanding a neighbourhood or adding new neighbourhoods.  I think this is brilliant planning on their part.  Remember with Sims 3, when a new expansion added venues, those venues would take over empty lots in your town.  With Sims 4, they could either just add the new venue lot to the venue neighbourhood - expanding that neighbourhood, or add a new neighbourhood with the new lots.  Really really smart on their part and a lot of forward thinking.  It should mean that no matter how many expansions and added venues/lots, it still shouldn't impact game performance.

Thank you so much for this information. Was very informative and helps me understand how the game works, and why things were left out.

Thanks justproud2b, what a great 'article' to explain the changes and why. I for one am really enjoying the game for what it is and personally find it a little frustrating with all the Sims 4 bashing. Yes there are some things I prefer in 3 but I can understand why some things have been left out and/or changed and your post explains it superbly.

People have to have something to complain about.  I say, if you don't like it, don't play it?
I personally am addicted.  I love my Sims family and can't wait to see them grow and prosper.

Thanks for sharing this ;-) I hope more people will understand the choices they made with the sims 4 better now. In the beginning I wasn't sure either whether I liked the sims 4, but now I'm hooked too! having fun with the Legacy challenge and creating a story around it.

Thanks for this - it makes total sense once explained!!  So maybe toddlers - but not swimming pools and basements -  next?!

Other than the teaching to walk, potty training, and teaching to talk all other interactions they had which weren't much were added to children. I think people got caught up in the "aww cute" of a toddler because when you look back they really didn't do much if they did ever add them I would see it coming in a generations style expansion. Characters are so robust now having characters that are so limited would stick out like a sore thumb.

edit: ( Also just to add this game was developed with the mindset of getting out of your house with toddlers requiring you for the most part to stay home that creates its own set of challenges )

I could see pools or hot tubs introduced in one of two ways. Either a beach expansion where they release a town resort/beach area or a summer fun type expansion. I don't however see them acting like they did before and I see them being more stationary items you place down like the current fountains. I don't know if they would ever release basements but that's dependant on how they come up with a solution for pools.

Glad this has helped so many people  :D Any other questions I can try to clarify please let me know!

Although I have simply accepted what the game has offered me, I have to confess that I found this enlightening. My opinion is that we would all enjoy this game more (even those of us who are fans of it) if we simply ceased comparing the game to its previous generation and found ways to be grateful for the amazing game that we've been given. TS4 runs more quickly on all systems, can be played smoothly on a laptop computer, and provides us with excellent graphics. Those who are upset over the loss of "realistic" appearances are welcome to stick to playing TS3, but I've always assumed that they aren't playing the game so much as they are playing with dolls (which we all are, in one way or another, but there's a game to be played here as well).

Thank you for posting this. It was very useful.

Interactions where added in EP's for toddlers. Toddlers can have emotions, also in The Sims 3 there are babysitters. Your Sim isn't ''stuck at home'' by any means. Not to mention the butler and Bonehilda, or even Plumbots. The main reason I miss toddlers is the muti-tasking system. I would love to be able to take care of the child and do other interactions at the same time. The reason The Sims 4 plays so well is there is no EP's yet. The Sims 3 runs great if your only using the base game as well. Not bashing EA, as I love them, and The Sims 4. I just think it would be great to have toddlers with the emotion and muti-tasking systems. I do love the interactions with children though, they're very awesome.

Thanks for this explanation. While I'm still going to be upset about the color wheel not being available for hair/eyes/skin, I understand why it had to be done. Honestly, all of the other changes I get and honestly don't even miss.

About toddlers–even though I love them because they're so adorable, they were sometimes a pain to take care of so right now I am not missing them too much. I can see them maybe adding toddlers in a "Generations" type expansion pack, perhaps along with pre-teens/tweens. Because teens are now the same height as YA/Adult, this leaves a spot open for preteens (around age 11-12 I'd say), which I think would be pretty cool. It's kind of weird to see a baby going from newborn to 8, then from 6 to 16. I think toddler and pre-teen stages would be pretty neat and could maybe be added in an upcoming EP?

Hi,

Thank you for explaining things in a way that I can understand and one that actually makes sense. It's easyfor me to say "I want this." or "I want that.", without actually understanding the consequences. I would prefer to have short loading screens and a smoothly running game instead of 5,000 shades of blue.

Cheers,

Dante

This was a great post.  Even before I bought the game, I saw it immediately as a step akin to TS2.  With the loading screens, it saved a great deal of time in travel which meant accomplishing more in a day.  As for the colour wheel, I do miss that, but TS2 didn't have one either and like TS2, I figure the expansions will give us many new outfits to choose from.  Your explanation was a terrific help for understanding the workings of the game and for my part I just know the game works better than TS3 (which I also love).  I am thoroughly enjoying TS4 and look forward to future expansions.  Thanks for your expertise.

I'm wondering, since I do very much miss the color wheel, would it be possible for them to limit it to fewer colors, not an endless wheel? Or would that still cause the same problems, in your opinion?

Thanks!
