Thank you for the explanation, although once I purchased the game and started playing I understood why all the changes.  I'm truly not missing toddlers (I mostly ignored them in TS3!), nor am I missing the loading screens.  Although I do miss the styling options for clothes and build mode, they've made up for it (in my opinion) with more clothing/building options.  One thing I really miss, thought, is basements.

I was wondering why no basements?  Is it possibly the same concept as pools?

Has there been any reasoning as to why they removed firefighters?

It seems ridiculous that if my sim is broke (can't afford a fire system) she has to haul her pregnant butt into a flaming kitchen to put out a fire.

@CaptainSauce most of the range hoods have sprinklers in them. If I am not mistaken it was stated somewhere it is harder to kill sims with fire now. With this change they probably opt'd to leave it out till it was career at some point (if ever).

@justproud2b, I had no idea the range hoods had sprinklers. <makes a note to install range hoods in all sims' houses> It just goes to show that when you think you know all the ins and outs of a game, you still have a lot to learn.

@MarianT I only learned that because someone posted an article of killing their sims with fire and had the issue of the range hood putting it out lol

Cartoon Looks
It is actually common for game designers to use a cartoon look to their games. The reason behind this is it let's the game remain timeless and not look outdated over time.

I don't think the lifespan of Sims games is long enough to make this a good explanation.
I think the reason is more about targeted customers or even morale agreement (woohoo is enhanced and a pastel/cartoon look may less trigger the authorities)

Or maybe cartoon looks make us accept better how ugly our sims are evolving, between fatness and a tower of muscles!
